I've had this puzzle for over 20 years. I was able to untangle it once, about 20 years ago. I had never been able to do it again. Thank you!

Nice! One of my favorites from the collection. I recently moved and actually forgot my entire collection there and am in the process of saving money to buy them all again. lol

Heh thanks. I had a theory (due to elimination) that feeding a loop in at the start was necessary, it was just too fiddly to experiment different outcomes with. Just barely enough chain.

Nicely done Dennis! Did you ever do this puzzle before? You did it so easily!

This one is a tricky one. I just got it untangled. Ready to try again!

I solved this puzzle, but after reassembling, I have an extra loop of chain around the ring. How can I fix that? I've spent hours trying to work it out.

danirasys It's hard to say how to fix it because there is no way for us to know how the extra loop got there. However, the chain does cross the ring 2 times both when solving and in reassembly. It's possible that reassembly was not completed all the way. Take a look at the written solution, in particular the sectio called Checkpoint: tavernpuzzle.com/solutions/sneakypete.htm
      Hope this helps!

+Tavern Puzzle Collection mmm. When I try to match the checkpoint, part of my chain loops are reversed. Still no success...

+Tavern Puzzle Collection Ahhh! I was finally able to solve it again! I had somehow looped the chain around or through itself when trying to reassemble. Thanks so much!!

This is the ONE puzzle I could never -- for the life of me -- figure out. Grinds my teeth to see how easy it is!!!

I had this puzzle years ago and could never solve it. Decided today whilst following youtube breadcrumbs to watch the solution. Imagine my surprise when your puzzle (and the others I subsequently watched on youtube) didn't have a little triangular pebble inside the bottom of the horseshoe loop preventing the ring from having a full range of motion! Any idea what I'm talking about? Like, is that an old design, or did we have a dud? I'm totally blaming the pebble!

I feel so bad for watching this, but so many people of all walks of life have become so incredibly frustrated trying to work this one out. You are truly evil, my hat off to you sir.

Extremely hard to follow. Ended up with the chain in knots trying to follow directions - threw it away. After watching other "solutions" it appears it's not a "puzzle" - it's math geek toy. "Annoyingly frustrating" is not the same as "fun".

not a math geek toy. spatial reasoning toy. geometric space toy... IDK what to call it really, but it's not a math geek toy. Frustrating, sure. I used to love these as a teen when I had more time that was my own. Now, as an adult with a lot of responsibilities and not being able to cut out blocks of time for stuff like this, sure, it does become more annoying. It also gets down to the amount of stuff I have to keep straight in my brain. I also used to have the pattern for solving a rubik's cube memorized, but again too many other things I need to focus on. I get this puzzle out and fiddle with it now and then. I google the solution. Even watching this will take some time to watch and rewatch to make sure I have all the pieces positioned just right, and I am not sure I will work on it or not. And then I'll maybe remember the trick long enough to show the kids a couple times. But when they lose interest and I stop "showing off", I'll forget again... ehh. but it's a fun puzzle to have around when we feel like getting it out from time to time.

If you didn't throw it out, you should have looked at the paper solution of this. I just did after watching the video, and I got it pretty quickly and it really made more sense. I'm not criticizing the video, and you can see it is a pretty old video. A better video now could be filmed with some kind of body worn camera so that the viewer can see it from the first person view.
Anyway, the paper diagram kind of let's you see the key points in the process better than the video and although I said below that it will be a lot to remember, I think that I can put it in my short to medium term memory if I solve it a couple times a day for the next week or so.
