Band names I like that haven't been mentioned... Flipper - the grungiest most nihilistic punk band named after a cute TV dolphin! Green Milk From the Planet Orange is memorable along with their live show. Galaxie 500 named after a car AND a bowling ball. Sebadoh = it's original, a nonsense word that's easy to remember, DEVO = short & simple, but stands for a whooole lot of stuff! One band whose music gives me indigestion, whose name I thought was stupid until I thought about it is Buck Cherry. Did they really just take Chuck Berry and switch the letters?? That's kind of awesome in how lame-brained and random it is. My pet peeve is bands who, instead of coming up with an original name, simply change the spelling! There’s a show on a big radio station here in Chicago that around 6pm on Fridays does a segment called weird band names. They would go through the Chicago reader and read weird band names and where they were playing that night saying “these are actual bands that you can go see tonight!” My friends and I have found ourselves on that list many times.
First time I heard of the Butthole Surfers, Gibby was telling Marilyn Mock at KTRU it was the first time they'd played twice under the same name. The origin was Gibby's description of a really harsh guitar effect sound Paul made: "Oh, man, that sounds like butthole surfing," meaning a way of wiping out on a skateboard. When the Houston Chronicle wrote about them the next week, they censored the name as "***hole" with THREE asterisks, making it look way more vulgar than it was.
Best band name I ever used (in my profile picture) came from our stoner guitarist: Not You. Worst I ever used but still a favorite came from our drummer, who formed our next band with me: Limp Richard. Worst I ever came up with was for my band in college, which ditched it while I was away for the summer: Youth In Asia For Sick Puns. After that summer we were instead Aad Noys.

I am with Dan the most on best/worst names. The Killers is an all time eye roller. Top five I haven't seen mentioned: New Order, Beat Happening, The Dream Syndicate, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Bongwater. Hot take on a bad band name is that if they didn't exist, someone else came up with the name, and you were getting to a show and saw the opener was Pink Floyd, you would immediately start planning how you could avoid the math-ska band or whatever it was you were about to see.
Killers made sense for the 90s heavy metal band led by former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno. Killers was a signature song for him in Iron Maiden, plus it sounds like a metal band name. Not a good name for some angular disco pop glam band.

That first Dream Syndicate album is pretty great, I think they took the name from La Monte Young? Beat Happening... cool band, and the name suits them, I'd love to know how they arrived at that. It's pretty terrible, but somehow the lightning bolt styled letter S makes it seem kind of cool, in a hipster kind of way. I mean, if a band called Pissed Jeans can get mentioned by Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound, then you know you might have a half a chance these days (with the right social media PR consultant!)

Buddy of mine in the mid 90's actually went by the nickname of "Rumpleforeskin" . He should have started a band, missed his calling I think.

Couple years ago there was a meme about listing bands you'd seen, one of which was fictitious. My list: Concussion Ensemble, Continental Heavy, Dow Jones & The Industrials, Eek-a-Mouse, Emergency Broadcast Network, Pressure Cooker. All quality stuff!

I’ve been saying that for years. I can’t stand bands named after traveling and locations; Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Chicago, Kansas, Asia, America, Nazareth, Alabama. They are all corporate cookie cutter crap!

I have a band name that I always thought was a great name when I was a teenage punker that I wanted to name our band but given the fact that some 40 years later I haven’t been able to sell it to anyone of my former band mates, thus probably making it a terrible band name : A⚡️⚡️ Pi⚡️⚡️🤯🤯🤯
It's pretty terrible, but somehow the lightning bolt styled letter S makes it seem kind of cool, in a hipster kind of way. I mean, if a band called Pissed Jeans can get mentioned by Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound, then you know you might have a half a chance these days (with the right social media PR consultant!)

My favorite band name of all time, was one of my best friends band…Turning Minnows Into Whales. Musically they sucked (until my friend joined), and were at best a crappy bar band. BTW, I’m Detroit it was AntiChristDeathCULT!! Walewander rules!!!!

Then Warn Defever went and did His Name Is Alive, a more arty but listenable group who kind of mixed Alan Lomax field recordings with Brian Wilson in his piano sandbox acid phase, gone quasi-gothic after meeting Dead Can Dance at his cousin's wedding, and occasional guitar visits by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, and ultimately predicting the unlikely pop collaboration of Huey Lewis and Gwynneth Paltrow - you know the one from "Sliding Glass Doors" and "Iron Man"? Whose candles smell like... [all true!] But enough about that!
Because before all that happened, Warren was in the band that would ultimately release an album called Supersadomasochisticexpialidocious.

I agree the killers and David Matthews sucked . u2, me too, we too 😂 traditionally in Jazz , I don't mind names being used for bands like a trio etc makes more sense in Jazz but not in Rock.

Jodie Foster's Army is one of my favorite band names. The Rezillos, Half Man Half Biscuit, Blibber and the Rat Crushers, Armed and Hammered, all good names just off the top of my head. There should've been a band called Hunter Biden's Laptop. I guess it could still work since they're still going on about it, how many years now?

X was a good band name, not so great now with the Elon Musk association. Ew. Some names that suck are Hot Hot Heat (though I did really like their hit song), Oingo Boingo, REO Speedwagon, Warrant (or do I just hate the name because they suck so bad?), The Fall (only because they're so hard to google, not their fault, same goes for Wire, and Television), Limp Bizkit, Puddle of Mudd, Fish, Presidents of the United States of America (love the band but I hate the acronym and hate how long it takes to type out the whole name on youtube search), I could go on but I'm pretty late to the party here so I'll stop now.

King Gizzard is a somewhat interesting, if uneven, band of hooligans. They have some entertaining music videos out on youtube.
