This is a goldmine of info about a cherished album. As a lifelong fan, I can’t even begin to tell you how much this means to me. I appreciate all of you taking this as seriously as we the fans do.

Loved this episode. I have a story about this album. What I was in high school there was a talent show and me and my friends decided we were going to lip sync " if you love somebody, set them on fire". Our plan was to have a plastic toy guitar and douse it with lighter fluid and light it up at the very end. We made the mistake of telling our teacher this plan and she shut it down. So instead we lip synced to " Hate you, I love you". We jumped around and smashed our toy guitars at the very end. Everybody in school hated it, and/or thought we were weird.

There's a Butthole Surfers documentary in production (Kickstarter); if they haven't been in contact with you yet, you should let them know you have some Gibby stories

Hate You, Love You is played on repeat during road trips with our grandchildren because they request it. Funny thing is, we never get tired of it. It's just a really great song. DM music will live forever because even kids today are weaving it into their memories.

I love this episode so much. Metaphysical Graffiti is the second DM that I was introduced to (after Big Lizard); I think it was a new release at the time.
Also, the children's choir was a great choice. Despite Rodney's razzing.

Absolutely love this album. It was my introduction to you, I was 13. Got to see you live at ESU in April of 93. Joe influenced my guitar playing. I came across these videos a few weeks ago and have been binging and really looking forward to the Metaphysical Graffiti episode. Thanks guys.

what a fantastic episode! An hour passed too quickly. Hilarious remark about Joe speaking this much for the first time in 45 years 🤣 We, the fans, definitely loved that. Thanks for all the studio and songwriting details you shared, like other guy in comments said, it means a lot. So I might be running naked and singing "born free" way too often, but I won't do terrible things, except for making you sick. Happy Halloween

That's an interesting story behind the "Earls". Does that explain the origin where in "Little Man In My Head", during the instrumentals, there's the " Some people put socks in their pants to make their member bigger then they really are" ? ; Was that a clip from an actual conversation or a stand alone statement? I picture some guy snooping around with a cup to his hear, pressed against the door and hearing that.

This is one of my favorite albums, positioned at the perfect point in my life to have been the official departure point from top 40 radio and MTV when I was a freshman in high school. It was a perfect combination of humor, energy, and raw unfiltered expression. Love you guys.

What a coincidence! I bought the MP3 album of METAPHYSICAL GRAFFITI earlier this month because my cassette copy was shot. Nice to hear some stories about the making of, though BEELZEBUBBA and NOT RICHARD, BUT DICK are my favorites.

I remember deciphering The Song For Michael's Pipe back when it came out. I even made some music albeit basic and repetitive to go with it. I assumed it was an actual song that didn't make the cut. Thanks for the clarification. After Dean goes through the process of backing up/digitizing all that footage of tape, does that mean we can expect some revived bonus tracks?

Another great episode. Thank you Joe for your excellent memory. Learned so much in regards to the album and some of the not so fun,Behind the scenes of that period of time.
Every band needs to have someone like that. I've always been that guy in every band I've been in. Probably wasted too much brain activity remembering such things haha.
Thanks Dan for the shout out & recommendation. A few of the songs on Atoms we're recorded with the still,Broken foot. Working on the follow up to Atoms now. I start physical therapy on Halloween. It's going to be painfully spooky!
Oh,Rodney. I've heard 2,000 Bong Hits From Home. It's hilarious. Drunken 4-track fun!

Hello! In High School in 1994-1997 I listened to you All the time and had the college radio station play your songs. Metaphysical Graffitti is an Album that I Still listen to front to back. I was gonna make a Led Zepplin joke, but eh. LOVE YOUR BAND and I am so happy to learn about the MYSTERIES OF THE MILKMEN. I have made a 1 minute video for like instagram of BITCHIN' CAMERO, and I am gonna make more videos of Y'All. the videos are under my name on tik tok and facebook and instagram or I can send them to you directally. What a kewl ep! I'm glad Rodney doesn't limit himself to the tongue and cheek now. I don't know what I'd do without Buried in the Sky and Tomorrow Should’ve Been Here Years Ago tuggin' at my viscera-strings. I wonder if you guys could answer a question for the Not Richard but Dick ep that'll hopefully come eventually. What's going in the 1st two lines of Jason's Head? Is Jason trying to kill the woman in the song or is it the other way around and I'm just mishearing the words?

Also, I love The Big Sleazy and it's memorialization of WXPN before the University of Pennsylvania took the reigns away from students, after "offensive material" of a sort I do not recall was broadcast, but perhaps Rodney remembers... Also, who played the announcer and guy who cleans out the toilets at the headshop?
In Pittsburgh we are lucky to have WRCT (Carnegie Melon University) which sounds a bit more like I imagine the good old days of XPN did.

watched a cute film about touring, but all I could think the whole time was, "Which milkman would say THAT?" because sometimes it was overwhelmingly clear and other times it was the thinnest line...ua-cam.com/video/agUS6GnZr_U/v-deo.html - a few lines about almost getting paid and the things the kids miss starting a band today that was unreal, super hard in the day (phone bills, press packets, and booking woes-stuck in lodi/fargo/wawa)?
