Farm vet here! The problem with dosing the ewes then moving them to a new field is that then they just bring to the new field all the worms that were resistant to the wormer. So then that field just gets full of resistant worms. (Checking for resistance is actually where faecal worm egg counts come in real handy - test right before you dose, then test after to see if the wormer is actually working. Also good for scouring or poorly growing lambs to see if it's actually a cocci problem you're having.)
Worms are really tricky to get right, no one farm is the same as the next - even if it works for your neighbour doesn't mean it'll work for you. The biggest concern is overdosing, as anthelminthic resistance is a huge problem in sheep. So if you've NOT been dosing the ewes for years and not having any problem, then crack on :) (And if you're worried at all then, of course, give yer vet a phone; we love hearing from our sheep clients ;) )
Thanks for that reply!! Good to know.
@@TheSheepGame If you'd like to fall further into the magical world of sheep parasites, SCOPS is a fantastic resource that explains things way better than I ever could! www.scops.org.uk/ 😁
@@TheSheepGame PS I looooove your videos! I didn't grow up on a farm, so aside from lambing one year and the vet school's attempt to teach us the basics of what you guys do, I admit my knowledge on the industry is a bit more sparse than I'd like. So these little videos of your day to day lives have been super educational/helpful as well as entertaining!
I'm watching in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. I recently found your channel, and am enjoying living vicariously through you! I've always loved sheep 🐑🐏 as a city person, and you have brought the reality alive. Now I love them more, and admire you and Lizzie for all the work you do with your sheep, and shearing, and scanning, and being awesome parents to your lovely wee boys. I'm an old lady now, and a bit broken down, or I'd be over there to have a go! I'm praying for you daily. 💖💖
On ya for letting the little fella have a crack. You could tell he was a nervous fan but enjoyed seeing you work.
Thanks for that! 😁
Good to see the young lad having a go at shearing. The dark sheep have a really black fleece, that was a real surprise. 🍷🍺👍
He enjoyed every minute of it
Great video Cammy! Thanks for doing that. Liam is still buzzing 😂. Obviously taking Meg for a run was the highlight of the day!
Was good fun Emma hope he likes the video!! 😁
This vet medicine is complicated to a non farmer like me. That’s why it is none as agricultural science. Thank you for sharing Cammy.🐑🐑🏴🇺🇸
where is the intro "Cammy is the name, Sheep is the game."
Haha yeah i’ll need to work on that😂😂😂
Great point about the saw dust, lost count of the amount of time I’ve came home from shear destroyed in muck from dirty pens & feet. 👍
Essential! 😁
Good for you Cammy, taking a wee minute to show young Liam how to clip.
Think it made his day!!
Something I have noticed is the shearer's shirt more than covers his "bum", terrific!! There is many a guy in the USA could use these shirts and they are not SHEARER'S!!
Stay well!!
Haha i was thinking of marketing them to bricklayers and workies in general also 😁
You got it, great idea!!
I don't have a position regarding deworming sheep, but as a sheepdog person, there's the issue of MDR1 (Multi-drug resistance) where things like ivermectin can severely affect a sheepdog (most herding breeds potentially can have MDR1) giving it seizures/coma, etc. The "good" news is it is 100% recoverable (for the dog) but you're talking $20K in vet bills and around-the-clock care for MONTHS until it gets out of their systems. I know two people who underwent this issue after herding sheep that had been freshly dosed, and the dogs ate the poop/got it on their paws/etc. Thankfully MDR1 is something easily checked with a gene panel, so breeders are now consciously trying to breed away from it.
No money in the world can buy a dog as good as you have keep up the good work
You guys look like you have such great fun, made me laugh after a long day anyway. Look forward to more of these shearing vlogs. Keep up the good work.
We worm 2/3 weeks pre shearing, find it tidies the ass up and makes them easier clipping. Been to a few places that hadn’t wormed/ pushed to get clipping done and the sheep were horrible 😂
Aye... yer getting gid at the vids now Cammy, great tips jd
Thanks John!!
Sounds like it’s fun all the way with you guys aye! Keep her running.
Every sheep is one extra......
Some banter we have!
Another good one👍I never worm dose ewes either during the year. Like you said they have a natural immunity to worms which comes from age but I think regular dosing of ewes is meant to increase resistance to wormers. That dosing gun looks like a right good job!
My thinking too Paul! Thanks for comment! (The gun is class)!
Your home is lovely! Beautiful property.
Thanks Jodi, lucky to live where we do!
🤣🤣 Love your videos and the tips too! Will have to have a discussion on the benefits of dosing ewes. Keep them coming 🐑
Thanks Heather!
Good video with interesting content.we dosed ewes in may for years but have now stopped after vet advice.we found race trailer 😓 hard work on our farm pushing ewes up the race.you should get to 20k sheared with no New Zealand shearers over this year🐑👍🏴
I’ll be happy with 15k John😁
I’m never sure
I always dung sample twice a year ewes and lambs
Sometimes it comes back ewes need wormed
Lambs have the highest perstenh
Fluke has been the biggest problem for me ,more so this last few years finding the right dose white / clear never easy to understand
Aidan sheep farming donegal sourthern Ireland
Love your videos 👍👍👍🐑
I really enjoyed watching YOUR video.. TQSM FOR SHARING..
Cammy, i agree with you, dont need to worm mature sheep. It will only reduce the efficacy of the wormer(long term)
Thanks mate!
The beardy man missed one!. We used to dose the ewes as they went into the bulking pen post lambing, against the spring rise. The lambs were dosed, usually twice against nematodirus and as a bemedizamole is still active on that nematode it is cheap. The next worm challenge were the strongles. In my view not worth a worm count as it is always a challenge, usually around August.
It’s good to miss the odd one... keeps non resistant worms in paddock 😁
The Sheep Game agreed, but nematodirus is such a killer.
Hello from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦❤️
Hi, great to hear when the international watchers are from 👍
We egg count all our sheep and worm accordingly but now I may think twice about the ewes. Cracking vids by the way.
Thanks Steve! A good bit of a debate!
Great video thanks again. We don't dose ewes til back end either and no problem with them. You have lovely ewe lambs there for replacements. Do you keep them for yourself?
Not sure if i’ll keep any this year. Probably keep all the females off the cheviots
Are brown sheep in the beginning Zwartbles by any chance?
Yeah they are 😁
We worm ewes at lambing then shear them then apply click extra 19 weeks blowfly cover then into bonding pens of ten ewes and lambs for a couple of days then out to grass, lambs get click same time as tail rings applied using a small paint roller, lambs don’t get wormed until weaning in September in fact , also we don’t footbathe or trim sheep’s feet any longer ,everyone likes the sheep now.🇬🇧👍
Nice
Zwartbles! Love that breed!
Another good vidio. Up here anything thats been on the hill dose not get wormed be it lambs or ewes as the heather is genrelly very poor worm habitat the only thing that you have to watch is for ticks although most of them are aclimiticed to them. Anything thats on the inbye will recive a does at sheering manly becase it is so wet here that worms are still a problem. Although this is for a hill situation and will need diffrent manigment to your ground
Thanks for the comment Dave good to hear how others work!
Great videos Cammy, enjoy them all, cheers.
Cracking up at the upside down click. Got a new fan spray gun along with the new " right way up" clikzin for lambs. Was just on the verge of smashing the new gun to smithereens until I sat back and realised😅😅. Quick question, what time of year do you dectomax? And is it just the once.
Thanks again . Paul...hill farm sw Ireland
Thanks for the comment! Would usually dectomax pre tupping. Around October.
It's just a little bit hard to hear you with all the background noise. It's probably my age, but if you can find the time to put captions at the bottom of the screen; that would be great. Thanks.
Hi Donna. Sorry about that i just don’t have time for the captions just now. Struggling to find time to edit videos!! 😁
Once international borders re-open you and Barry should come and shear a season in Australia. Would make for a great experience and content.
Haha Barry is going to Oz after he’s finished here! Not sure where he’s going yet though!
I met him shearing in Lybster. He’s a good laugh 😂
Throwing a good undermine there Archie,
Nice video. lister have a new nixus sensor do you have any idea about it and what do you think of lister skorpion handpiece
I’m just heiniger everything so can’t really comment on the lister gear! 😁
shearers are the. only contractor that comes to a farm and gives them a go in theory put yourself out a job 😂😂😂👍
Wee question Cammy. How does your back feel doing the kind of work you do when shearing?. Do you get any problems with it?.
Hi Daz, back only ever bothers me if it’s a strong breeze blowing. If there is i stick a back warmer on. When i was learning it was hellish but everything gets easier with practice.
Cracking vid keep them coming 👍
Thanks Toby!
Just overdosing on your videos cammy. I'm from Berwick-upon-Tweed and that poor little boy wearing a Newcastle top! 😂
Haha I watched a video about Berwick recently. Is it Scottish or English =D.
Give over! It's in Northumberland 😂
But they play footy in the Scottish leagues?😂
If that's what you call it 🤣
Dose the ewes with abit more wormer than usual when they are suckling lambs but done dose the lambs as the wormer will come through the milk for the lambs
Not sure that's correct?? Never heard of that one! I know it works like that for vaccines but wormer?
You always seem to have a good crack with the others. Have done that with click extra as well. Who hasn’t?
Exactly!! We all do it at some point😂
Hi cammy the whole sheep game is a mad cycle lambing ewes keeping lambs surviving and the clipping and the whole summer doing foot baths and worming dirty lambs and the odd ewe and no forgetting keeping the grass down mowing and that’s the way it goes
All good fun though Doug!
Your spot on about the sawdust.... :)
Having a shitty foot get ya in the face while shearing ain't particlary a big problem yet it is better avoided aye!
We’ve all been there.... it’s when it catches yer mouth 🤮
I would like to see you clipping some of that valais pet sheep things
There is a video of that have a look at my other videos!
Wel i wil be saveing myself some cash with the worming. 🤠
😂. Changing the world here
Braw Video buddy
Thanks David
S..t, muck dear, muck !
we dont worm ewes untill pretupping , and i am thinking about droping that dose ,, and dose post tupping,,, my thinking if there is worms present and i chase em out pre tupping the ewes will gain condition and end up with to menny tripplets and at 110 trops and 20 quads there the stress at lambing for me,,, any evedence to prove me wrong or right ???
Thanks for comment Gareth!
We've ALL done it. Bastard bottles them only one you hold upright
You’re right there Jimmy!
Flash as Moccies bro
Who had the flash moccies on?😂
The Sheep Game you with your fancy blue jobs,
In my day you could have any colour moccasin provided it was made by you, from a hessian bag😂😂😂😂
We dose or ewes
A wee tip cammy have your ewes fasted from the night before
In a different area way easier to to shear 🐑🐑👍🐑
I agree Aidan always easier but not always practical! 😁
