Same here. $900k in loans, but they were forgiven. He wrote checks in my name and claimed I was an employee of his. I have the same 2 jobs i had before I met him. I filed a police report in November. I've been waiting for the police department to move on it, because my husband is stalling the divorce by withholding all financial information.
My husband won’t show me the tax returns. He owns small businesses, and when I ask how much money we make he says “it’s complicated” or “even I don’t really know.” He would never open a joint account and there’s not a real marriage there. I don’t even know how much money is involved, or how I would find that out. We even started the process of applying for a mortgage and somehow he got the lender to only communicate with him. This is why I want out. It doesn’t even feel like a marriage. So much lack of communication. But we live in California and I want to leave the state so I can buy a house in a state that’s more affordable, and I can’t leave without some money. And I don’t have anything or any power to get it. I need help!!!!!!
Financial therapy, what a great idea!!!! Finance basics is such a great idea to teach young ones to have resources and tools for when they start serious relationships.
A good one is , What would happen if one of us had to go into a care therapy facility and they legally freeze our bank accounts and savings accounts ? We need separate accounts for that reason. My very wealthy friend's husband had a stroke and he was in rehab for 4 long years and their money was frozen , the well person could not touch it.
Its easy to pidgeon hole men vs women assuming all it takes to prevent financial abuse is for wives to "try harder" if she isnt included or allowed access to financial accounts or her husband refuses to give her 1 penny for a divorce attorney or legal fees, then used marital funds to pay his retainer and legal fees.
Thank God I didn't sign nothing with my ex. Nothing at all. I had some issues with my ex when he knew the relationship was ending I was being harrassed so bad and ended up 3 and a half months in jail almost facing 2 year prison time behind the people who was also involved with my ex who was harrassing me about that marriage. Mental breakdowns and depression while I was locked up he field taxes I had even had people taking out extra money so I could file myself so I could have the money to leave what was bad and toxic involving these third party. This third party people threatened that if I would leave they knew my address as if they would bring further trouble on me then the harm they had already caused. Because of these people I was in an out of mental hospitals and everything. When I was working trying to save money these people would attack me mentally and through technology and I would be off work and be so stressed that I wouldn't even go to work. My ex was well aware of everything that was happening. Several people was. The only thing people would say was further toxic information for me to fight for the marriage where my ex would lie and tell me that what was being done was the result of am addiction and not the truth of what these people was doing to me. It was hell the worst toxic, lying, depressive crap that anyone should ever go through and to fight for what to stay with a lair, a gaslighter while he began to get angry that the lies was not working and messing up everything that I needed to get out of it first off my recovery because of the stress the money that I was making and the time spent in jail several times the paycheck that I had him use to get me out of jail because of the crap and ect. That's if the jail even required a bond with all the crap I went through. If I was to have been let out without a fee he would be the type to pretend that the check that went into the account was used for that. Then again the town that I'm from would want the money and still gaslight you about the injustice of the people involved.

I tried that . I had no idea what I was dealing with and his parents were helping him .. meanwhile our kid had cancer bone marrow transplant and all.
