Lain has been my favorite anime for years now because of the way it perfectly portrays disassociation. The way you see the people around lain blur into shadowy figures and how the words on the chalkboard blur is so on point to the experience of disassociation. This video covered lain really well👍🏻
I loved all the insight you gave to the themes! However, I'm struggling to connect it to one of the main parts of the plot, which is so many people k-ing themselves.
LMAO THE WAY YOU ROASTED DISNEY IN THE BEGINNING I'M DEAD 💀 What interesting existential ideas and questions. I appreciate Jung's work and I believe even it has a merit in psychology and society even today. Just one great part of a whole network of psychological discovery. I really do love psychology and learning about it, or perhaps "us" would be a more fitting phrase for its studies. You mentioned in video it's easy to lose oneself in the current and how the Internet is such a fascinating phenomenon. I absolutely agree with that observation, it's so interesting thinking about the new world that's been created. I often have a different identity (a "persona" you could say) for different areas of my life. It's still me, but there's different pieces of me in each one that has varying distance from my deepest self. I'm finding that my Internet one tends to be a deeper one and I really enjoy the identity that's come from exploring this possible new dimension of human reality. I'd also like to make the argument that in order to learn who we are (a complex and difficult thing indeed, something I believe many never actually do), we must lose ourselves first in order to better understand the world, ourselves, and how they all relate to each other. It probably sounds contradictory; however reality is stranger than fiction. I'm ngl the second I realized I hadn't watched this one yet I was super excited and delved right in. I enjoy your videos like nothing I ever have before. There's plenty of fantastic analytical content out there, but somehow there's a deep uniqueness to yours that draws me in and has me hanging on every word. Your longest video is about an hour and a half long and yet it feels like none at all. I'm always left greedy and wanting more. I really hope you enjoy your content as much as I do.
I just finished watching lain for the first time, and can’t wait to watch it again. Very Lynchian. So interesting to see how relevant it is still, and the almost endless documentary speculation that seems to be growing by the day is very intriguing. Thank you for this.
we’re drowning in the statics… digitalizing our beings into everlasting endless souls… lost souls… alienated by their own existence… existence… it hurts to live… it numbs to die… the paradoxicality of existence… oneself… for all is one and all is one…
hey, fantastic video! i appreciate that you chose to tackle one of the core themes of the text head on. it's definitely heavy, and like you said it doesn't definitively answer the question it raises, but i think you'd agree that's a huge part of why so many people love the show. as for other shows, it'd be great to see you tackle ergo proxy! it's similarly bleak and melancholic, and from memory touches on some similar themes but from different angles.
Lain, predicted the future of the internet, how the internet affects the self, offering a sort of extension onto the self, the digital animus, It was/maybe still is required watching in Tokyo University. for some courses. I hope that doesn't change.
i watched for the first time and being able to understand it can be scary or freaky stuff for most blissed normal people that don´t explore/question their own true reality by thinking outside the box above our own "little world called society and responsibilities", they are not ready to experience those realities and prespectives that some people go thru and their own by feeling it, i basically have good knowledge how to understand the "observer concept" regardless of culture/environment/feelings/actions etc to have proper responses with both rational and emotional intelligence, ways to perceive yourself in "third perspetive" as a puppet in a domino effect" making decision based on consequences in a larger scale mixing physics/philosophy and spirit, i can overthink and make accurate guess´s with some consistencie im not the might and holy but i do a good job understanding stuff like emotions with empathy, the human experience, nature, "spirit" n Mind i think frequencies are something that should be explored more. Everything is meaningless and depressing you just have to create meaning out of nothingness we have faith in a hopeless world just like a quantum dream Being able to understand when she where in the digital world or leaving is not an ez thing to do, if you think about it from first perspetive the experience from the sense of space n time you will logically assume from the first time you see Lain that she is the original one and main reality so you should question other realities until you see her leaving her computer and everything else act like normal, for exemple her sister being "dumb" is a diferent realitty connected by a linear line/web (not necessary connected but can interacted) they explain a bit that concept because "internet of course" like seeds in Utorrent downloads you connect to many other computers in order to download faster being able to get the same download from diferent people having diferent package you need. It is a Good anime indeed very deep and wise rich of culture and prespectives that can become a real distopia, ahead of his time indeed
Have you seen Haibane Renmei? I'd be interested to see your take on it. I don't think it's as deeply psycological as SEL or Omori, but it's nevertheless great. The series touches on themes of salvation and the importance of ties to those close to you. I think there may also be some deeper psycological symbolism in the worldbuilding of the series which I haven't seen explored by anyone before.
I would like to express my opinion here regarding identity and its definition, the first thing that comes to mind is Buddhism and its denial of "I", where this "I" is your feelings, or rather, hearing, sight, smell, and so on that there is no monolithic "I" different "consciousnesses" or rather each feeling that a separate consciousness (at least this is how I understood it) in contrast to this concept, Hermann Hesse's book "Sidhartha" comes to mind (Hermann Hesse communicated very closely with Jung) the book talks about the search for this " I" through the killing of this "I" and finding it at the end as unity with everyone around (I recommend reading it like "Steppenwolf") about 3 Lane and about the fact that she embodies the "super ego" it seems to me that it represents a "shadow" or merging of "I" with "shadow self" because "super ego" is a manifestation of "all positive qualities" 3 Lane is far from the "ideal" rather more sarcastic but socially adapted from Lane's conversation with 3 Lane, one can conclude about the negations of a part of oneself or denial of her "shadow self" also i heard some interpretetions of what happened and some people's say about her hair pin in the ps 1 game it says that it is for suppressing the "wired world" since the noise is stronger on the left side, she hung it there, about that plan of Masami Eiry was to merge the "real world" and "wired", or rather, he sewed the Schumann resonance into the code of the new protocol. I also heard that the knights used this resonance in the Siberia club, so after several visits to theclub Lain began to lose "herself", also Lane's sister, who was a regular guest there, began fall out of this reality into another
That's very interesting, it seems I missed the comment till now. Funny you should mention Hesse, I've had people recommend him to me before! I'll definitely have a look at some of his works whenever I have time. In return I recommend you read Schopenhauer ;) The denial of the "I" is definitely a key theme here and honestly something I could've brought up explicitly. The whole process of Lain giving herself up to the collective unconscious can easily be viewed in the light of an individual consciousness and the whole illusory sense of one's own desires and needs being given up for the sake of reuniting with the "world soul" or universal consciousness. She "loves everyone," at the end not only because she is an embodiment of the collective unconscious, but because loving the entire world and everything in it is the natural result of a complete denial of the "I"; becoming united and one with everything. Thanks for commenting.

I believe it's what he said early on about the one girl-
To be freed from their physical bodies and purely reside within the Wired
