    So I get the impression that people might be interested in a Black Space 2 video as well, which I wasn't really planning on making. If so, please comment on or like this comment and I'll use it as an indication that people are interested.

    Random fact: for Omocat's birthday following the release of Omori (iirc, don't quote me on this), she had an Omori themed party, with Orange Joe, and the cake was... Mewo. And there was icing writing on the cake platter. "Mewo has been very naughty."
    It was most likely meant to be funny but god was that such a morbid thing, apparently Omocat enjoyed herself tho.

    The dead mama spider represents many things in my mind. 1. They were unable to overcome the grief of their mother, so the moment they saw another person, they lashed out on them, that person being Basil. This is much like how Aubrey acts. 2. As Something took the form of a spider, it is quite ironic that these same spiders are experiencing grief when they at one point took the form of his grief; of Something. 3. Life and its natural course of death. Basil is a nature lover, so of course he loves spiders. It contrasts Sunny’s fear of them. However, they end up devouring Basil anyway, proving Sunny’s fears were true. When he fell from a high place after looking at a spider and nearly drowning, Mari was the one who came to save him. The mama spider was probably out there to give the player a sense of understanding of the spiders after what they did to Basil. The spiders lost something precious to them, too. They lost their precious mama. The music that plays here is called 5ths which could be referring to a term in Music Theory, but this song also plays in the Mari is Home section when you get to Red Space. You can see all of your Somethings locked away behind fences, raised like cattle. Omori wants Sunny to trap his trauma, cage it. The spiders in the Spider Area are likely derivative of these Somethings. There are many stumps that have knives stabbed into them, representing how despite the tree that Mari was hung on being chopped down, therefore she is no longer hanging, Sunny cannot forgive himself and would rather die, symbolized by the knife. There is also the Hellmari maze which is full of depictions of Mari’s hanging corpses which chase you and make you take damage. Sunny can still see her hanging despite the tree being chopped down, that’s what Something is. I see the dead Mama Spider as extremely profound although it’s hard to put most of it into words. I’d say it also symbolizes the decay of those who have been unable to grieve or are currently grieving, like in the Pain Area. All the dead spiders littering the ground, and those weird Snakehands flying in the background that look like centipedes. The mama spider had died of pain, from Black Space itself, because of Sunny’s pain that it couldn’t handle, and from the inability to cope with the darkness around it. This spider, which is one of Sunny’s fear is in a way represents Sunny’s suicidal thoughts, especially since the spiders are one of the forms Something takes.

    The Mewo area, for me, is an example of a reoccuring symptom of depression or trauma, and that is the urge to destroy or abandon the things you love. Either to let it go, giving you fewer burdens to hold you down, because you feel you don't deserve it to a point where you're willing to sabotage yourself or that through surrender or resignation to your situation, you've come to a conclusion that there's no point holding onto it. Whatever the reason, it's something that you don't have to do, you have only something to lose from doing it, but is something that you feel that you HAVE to do to progress. Just as the Butler indicates after you cut Mewo open, your situation has not improved in any way. You're still waiting for something to happen.

    Regarding the Black Space " lies Space", personally I am inclined to believe that when SOMETHING said "I love you" it was Mari's true soul speaking. In the non-hikikomori route, the priest mentions something strange happening at the cemetery, and both HERO and SUNNY wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of a piano. During one of these instances, MARI appears playing the piano and apologizes to him, saying "I pushed you too hard, I'm sorry." This interaction suggests that in the world of OMORI, Mari's soul truly exists. Additionally, there are many instances in the Headspace where SOMETHING appears and says similar things, such as "I'm sorry." It is speculated that Mari's soul has already forgiven him and hopes to help him recover mentally. (After all, based on SUNNY's behavior, he probably wouldn't want Mari to forgive him, right?)

    • @DetectiveMar
      @DetectiveMar  Рік тому +23

      Mari's true soul is definitely present canonically (just look at the gateway symbolism with the window I mention at the end for instance), so that's certainly a valid interpretation. But the fact that Omori rejects and represses Mari's attempts to forgive him doesn't necessarily mean that there can't also be a part of Sunny himself which wants Mari to forgive him, and knows that she already has. A huge part of my interpretation revolves around the "conflict of opposites" I named the video after: namely the conflict between the conscious and unconscious (roughly speaking) and part of that conflict is between the part of Sunny which refuses to forgive himself or believe that Mari could do so, and the part which ultimately does hope for that forgiveness. Therefore, I do also think that viewing the Something's apology as an expression of Sunny's own knowledge that Mari would forgive him is valid as well.
      So yes: a part of Sunny doesn't want Mari to forgive him, but there is also a part that does hidden deep below the surface; or rather a part which knows that she would.

    • @Dhalin

      I don't think that the Supernatural is a mandatory interpretation of OMORI's events. OMOCAT gave us plenty of reason to believe that all of this stuff involving MARI could be simple hallucination. Every time MARI appears in Headspace is obviously inside of Sunny's mind. So, let's sweep aside that part with her in the area with the boardwalks, along with other things and focus on the one scene that everybody says "SEE? THAT HAD TO BE A GHOST!" ... and that is when Sunny sees her in real life at the piano. Well, obviously Sunny could be hallucinating. We later see Sunny's sheer hallucination powers with the whole Recycultist dungeon, and wormholes, Space Ex-Boyfriend, the playground plushies appearing at the park, etc. Then people go "BUT WHAT ABOUT HERO!?" .... well, what _about_ Hero? Hero says "I coulda sworn I heard some music" ... but wasn't he reminiscing hard, just earlier, talking about "... this song you used to play with Mari, it still gets stuck in my head sometimes" and "I think about her every day, I'm sure you do, too." .... is Sunny the only one capable of hallucinating? No. Hero also had a lot of trauma himself, I mean he didn't wanna get out of bed for a year and eventually snapped and had a breakdown all over Kel, afterall. Hero was in the perfect condition and circumstance for his own hallucinations. I think Omocat left it open to interpretation on purpose, she knew some people would like the supernatural theory, and she knew that other people wouldn't, and would rather assume more "mundane" things like hallucinations were at play. She left ample evidence for both, and made it perfectly ambiguous.

    • @DetectiveMar
      @DetectiveMar  Рік тому +10

      @@Dhalin Everything not stated outright is open to interpretation. But what, say is the probability that Hero would hallucinate music from a room perfectly correlated with Sunny's vision of Mari playing the piano in that same room at the exact same time with no knowledge that Sunny is even awake?
      And although you can choose to interpret, for instance the gateway symbolism of the window as simply being Sunny generating symbolism which aligns with the idea that this is Mari's spirit, it's quite clear to me that it's most reasonable to interpret it as Mari's spirit, or at least a message that Mari is conveying to Sunny in real terms.

    • @Kayta-Linda
      @Kayta-Linda Рік тому

      @@DetectiveMar Don't you have to interact with Mari to even start this cutscene? Sunny probably just unconciously pressed some piano keys while thinking about what Mari would've said there.
      "I could've sworn I heard some music" doesn't even mean that he heard this song, it could've been literally any vaguely melodic sound. So he probably heard Sunny try the piano out (for the fist time in years, which is exactly as big of a step as the scere portrays) and rushed over to check. Specifically *because* he had no knowledge of Sunny being awake, as you put it.
      It's not a coincidence, it's a very logical and natural sequence of events.

    • @DetectiveMar

      @@Kayta-Linda
      OK so this is what I think:
      I agree you can adopt that interpretation if you really dislike the idea of a supernatural element, and everything sunny sees can be explained away as manifestations of his unconscious if you prefer. But the symbolism used in these cases refer to the idea of an afterlife whether imagined or not, e.g the gateway: “You’ve seen this before when you went to the lake.” “I know I shouldn’t have come, but it gets lonely without everyone.” And the simplest interpretation would be to say that what we are being shown is what it seems to be: Mari’s spirit. I don’t think fiction has to be subject to the same positivistic assumptions as reality.
      And symbolically I think the inclusion of the spiritual component strengthens the impact in these sections. The idea that, as a result of his struggles to move forward, Mari is able to fully manifest herself to him in such a ‘real’ way that even Hero can just barely sense it, hearing her play. It doesn’t have to fully real either, in the sense that Mari might not be physically playing the piano, but the symbolic meaning of Hero hearing something is only there if you allow at least some small spiritual aspect.
      There are also some details which seem to lose their relevance to the plot if you reject the spiritual component, like the pastor saying he’s been getting a strange feeling from the cemetery etc.
      It’s quite tricky since Sunny’s ‘illusory’ unconscious is so closely intertwined with these vaguely spiritual elements, but the most consistent interpretation most likely intended by Omocat seems to me to be the one which adjoins the two and allows the spiritual aspect in some way or another.

    There is a door you can open in the Town Area, but only one and when you enter it you’ll find Something following you closely behind although all it is is strands of hair. When Sunny leaves this house, Something doesn’t follow him outside. Sunny may be able to go outside and leave his trauma behind in this small house, but there are no other houses he can enter. That one house with the door that you can open has the clock hands changed from the others, showing how Sunny has lagged behind everyone else. There is also a graveyard which plays a low-pitch version of that one homeless musician guy’s song in Faraway Town that sounds like K.K. Slider. This likely represents how the musician wanted to get enough money to move out of town, and not only is Sunny moving soon, but assuming this place is an analogy for after everyone has moved away from Faraway Town, then it makes sense because the guy was trying to get enough money to move away, so he’s already moved. This is further proven by the fact that the graves are all of people Sunny knows either in Headspace or Faraway Town. Not only did everyone leave town everyone died. This place also connects with a Black Space 2 area in which there are many crudely drawn depictions of Mari’s hanging corpse. Mari was hung, and that brought bad luck to the town in Sunny’s mind, made his friend group fall apart, maybe made Sunny think of that old guy who is always talking about how someone will be grieving soon at the Faraway Graveyard. In this empty town, the gravestones are all that remains, and the Something that still lies inside his house, as well as the deer who tried to run away from the truth but because of this were never able to leave this small town. Is it still home if nobody is left in it? I also believe the trees aren’t simply nonsensical, but also represent the tree that Mari was hung on. The tree turning upside down might represent what the top half of the tree looked like after Sunny’s father chopped it down.

    In terms of the cold steak - I can see the metaphor you described of his 'cold, inedible' reality that he had created - or even the absent mom approach - but would like to present for consideration that it may be a metaphor for depression. For example, from personal experience, depression can cause one to eat cold food because they are too 'exhausted' to heat it up, or think they deserve it. It ties along with your analogy nicely, I think!

    RE:Scribble Area: I would like to posit an alternative meaning to the Scribble Area. Notice how there's a very windy footpath through the area, with a LOT of bent over stick figures and three large stick figures at the very end of that path? What I think this symbolizes is how Sunny feels his life always was meaningless. The three large stick figures are his Mom, Dad, and Mari. The winding footpath is his life up until Mari died. The stick figures? Notice how they _are bent over backwards_ and they are much smaller than the standing stick figures. Those stick figures are meant to represent Sunny himself, as he bends over backwards for their every whim. Several times in the game, Sunny is depicted as a person who'd listen to your every problem, your every thought, and very rarely offering his own. He would do _anything_ for his friends. But... such selflessness comes at a cost, doesn't it? Where were HIS wants, HIS desires amongst all of that? He never had time to think about what HE wanted. The few times he did... led to disastrous things. Remember in the lost library, there's the book about watching cartoons with his friends? He took up the violin because he wanted to be with Mari, but she wound up corrupting that into her perfectionist ideals. All he wanted, was to be with her and his friends, but that wound up getting warped into something he didn't want, but felt compelled to do anyway. Even the photo of the violin near the end, Sunny remarks that it scared him, but he persisted because of his friends. So, this entire room of Black Space is dedicated to Sunny's complete lack of self during his life, even before Mari died.

    I think the Humphrey boss fight evokes a similar "amnesiac sense of deja vu" that you talk about at the 22:00 minute mark. One of his lines of dialogue is "ignorance is bliss, how many times must we do this?" which indicates that omori has gotten to this point before, and once he realises that he is close to the truth he has locked away in his mind, he represses it down. We see this in the pile of bones laying on the floor during the boss fight, which is most likely the skeletons of the party members, a very gruesome detail.

    I'd like to add a little to the "Absurdity Area" ... that track that's playing in the background? It's hollow and distorted, almost like he's hearing it from a distance. In fact, the song is CALLED "Distance" in the OST. There could be a few different interpretations of this. One, I think he heard this particular song one of the times he was attending some sort of musical practice session, or maybe at a school band practice, or music class or something and it was playing in the background and he either was spaced out, or something to that effect. Or, perhaps the song itself is being used to once again (as the game had done before) showed you how absentminded Sunny can get at times (the scene where Sunny and Kel have dinner at Basil's house is another example) where Sunny is only partly aware of what's going on around him and is prone to just wondering around not really paying attention.

    for me the mewo room has two meanings behind it. the first of course is it gives you the perspective of someone who is suicidal, the second meaning is one i thought of because of my own experience with the game. when i was in the room i didn't realize i could stab myself, i killed mewo, and when i figured out what i was actually supposed to do i felt an immense amount of guilt over what i did. i believe the room is meant to convey the feeling of guilt over a mistake that can never be taken back. i felt so bad about what i had done i needed to take a break from the game for a while.
    sunny's mistake, much like my own, is permanent, there's no way to bring mari back, and if you chose to kill mewo he no longer appears in white space, he's gone for good and there's no way of bringing him back.

    The Treehouse Area goes high up into the sky, to the point where the clouds are inverted and the full moon is somehow past it. You and Basil go inside the treehouse and find many memories, but they are all tainted and are abstracted. Memories you desperately want to FEEL again, but the repression is keeping you from feeling those wonderful things. This is why in order to get the good ending you have to relive your REAL good memories, because not acknowledging your memories will cut you off from your future.

  • @lemmykoopa1379

    There are some parts of Black Soace which feels like something I myself have personally dreamt up of before, which makes it strangely and morbidly nostalgic to me, not because of Basil dying over and over obliviously but because of the environments of Black Space. I’m particular, the environments of Treehouse Area, Absurdity Area, Reef Area, Watermelon Area, Town Area, Weathervane Island, Spider Area and especially the Raft Area. It gives me a heavy liminal space vibe. It’s impossible for me to properly explain in words, but it’s as if I’ve developed some sort of Mandela Effect for memories which I never had yet relive through this game. Also, there are memories of vivid dreams which were brought to life in Black Space kinda. I had to pick one of these rooms that resonated with me the most would be either Town Area or Church of Something. Both make me think of distant memories, especially ones I’ve had in dreams that I’ve nearly forgotten, but I also can relate to a lot of the messages that those two areas are trying to convey. Black Space is a hauntingly beautiful work of art within an already beautiful work of art. It as well as Omori as a whole understands mental anguish so freaking well, it makes me tear up, especially with all the disorienting music. I love analysis videos like this on my favorite games so you’ll probably see me comment a lot more on your other Omori videos.

    As for the dead spider, it says "the baby spiders are grieving their mother." Mari was essentially a mother or older female figure in general to Sunny, Aubrey, Basil, and Kel. They're the baby spiders that mourn Mari's death.
    Mari was hurt that Sunny broke the special gift and the chance at their recital. "A dead spider. It has passed from sadness." The argument happened because Mari was pained by Sunny's actions. Thus, in a way she "passed from sadness."

    Just found your channel, and your interpretations of OMORI feel really fresh and insightful! It's always nice seeing a good commentator discuss a game I hold so close to my heart. :)
    Something I'd like to add about the hand symbolism is the fact that the "red hands" could literally symbolize Sunny catching himself red handed for what happened. This also seems to be reiterated near the end of the Truth sequence, in the scene where a cluster of red hands circle around Sunny as he picks up the last few photos of Mari dying, pointing at him accusingly. As for the repeated imagery of fingers getting cut off, I personally think it's also meant to symbolize the pain Sunny felt from playing the violin constantly and his stress over the recital. This is also shown in the unused descriptions for the Truth album (Which I would recommend checking out if you haven't, they're not only chilling to read but include some interesting details about the incident). "Your precious violin lay shattered at the bottom of the stairs. You threw it in a rage. Your fingers were shaking in pain...practicing over and over...but you still make mistakes after mistakes. This was all a bad idea."

Since Kel, Aubrey, Hero etc. are just tools Omori uses to repress the truth, to not let it get into headspace, then the lack of their faces could symbolise, that they don't resemble the real Kel, Hero and Aubrey. Omori just created them to have someone in their place, but they weren't his real friends

    i dont comment much, but both of these analysis videos have been wonderful to watch and like the other commentors say - its genuinely insane how underrated you are. thank you for these, would love to see more, especially one on black space 2 if you were interested in making it. either way great content.

    I think the Mewo room can actually be uplifting in a weird sense. It's the first time that Omori's actions in Black Space can actually have a consequence, but regardless of which choice you make, the outcome is the same. Sunny can't leave the discomfort of where he is and the situation that's he's put himself in; no amount of taking it out on those around him will help. It's only when he chooses to face the pain himself that he can return to where he was and move on, and it feels like the game or the narrative is forcing Sunny to confront that in that room before it starts to peel back the layers further and begins revealing just how bad Omori is for him through all the forthcoming Basil-killing and eventual weaponizing of his Headspace friends.

    12:29 not sure if anybody's mentioned this one, you only use four fingers for fingering the notes on the violin (not your thumb). interpret that how you will :)

    • @TheBreakingBenny
      @TheBreakingBenny 4 місяці тому

      Sunny's fingers really ached from practice that just "wasn't good enough." He could feel MARI indirectly telling him it isn't good enough for her perfectionist obsession, and this is made much clearer in unused text for both the faceless HEADSPACE friends (which in code is commented out and swapped for empty text, wherein "Faceless Mari" would've said "It's just not good enough.") and the "Black Space Photo Album" which'd narrate that SUNNY "just wasn't good enough", and he could no longer maintain his frustration. Those above messages for the "faceless friends" would've also possibly been used in the final game via the "99 Letters Area" (which you can technically reach, only if you enter a Hangman Key hole and if the respective control variable is at least 99; the caveat being there are only 26 Hangman keys you can collect, thus you must manually raise it w/ save-editing or debug mode).
      The "Boring Room" poster that was used to promote OMORI's release also has that little detail about Sunny's continuous practicing if you look closely. This is what happens when you're so busy trying to please many, that you forget your own wants and limits.

    I think there is meaning in Locquasious Cat's answers. Sewing is a transfirmative action that can create new objects out of scrap or mend broken ones by stitching them together and/or filling them up. The only way to find meaning in life is to create your own meaning by filling your life with enrichment and crafting your own meaning out of your experiences. To mend the broken parts of your life requires you to reconnect with your past and either bridge that gap or find closure.
    Sunny is a hikikomori even in his own head. He is watching his lufe slip between his fingers and has lost/given up the ability to do any of these things to heal

    30:52 it’s a bit hard to hear but in this section of blackspace if you interact with the mari-like scribbles they will make a noise, if you strain your ears you can hear what they’re saying
    I can’t make a lot of it out but there’s one unmistakable sentence that they say, "I just wanted to talk"
    And another I think is "how could you"

    my take on the "faceless area", in the game files it's referred to as the "meat room", and the hidden-ish background is actually a compilation of images of slices of meat. something to note is the music purposefully designed to make you uncomfortable, on my first playthroughs i really wanted to get out of the room when i heard it.
    What i think the meat is supposed to represent is his "headspace friends", except for what they are in their true form. In headspace, they're only puppets of sunny's mind, but nowhere close to a real person, just puppets of meat.
    Facing this reality is uncomfortable for Sunny, and as you mentioned with the Mewo room about the player's experience tied with the implications of the room, the music makes us uncomfortable being in the room as sunny is uncomfortable seeing the headspace friends as lifeless puppets.

    I just saw this video and, though I will comment some months later, there is a specific symbolism in Black Space that I think is worth to notice. In Town Area, there is actually a house that you can enter. Upon entering, you see a unfurnished long house (just like Sunny's house) and 2 interactable objects. The first one (not what I want to talk about in this comment but worth mentioning anyway) is a painting of a woman with large hair covering her entire body. Of course that symbolizes Mari. When you stop interacting with it, it spawns a similar-like figure that slowly chases you in this room.
    But the second interactable thing that got my attention is a cake laying on the ground at the end of this long room. When you interact with it, it asks whether you want to eat it or not. If you answer 'yes' it will prompt 'As you chew, you begin the crunching of bones' 'You chew a little slower... and realize your molars are missing'. In Psychanalysis, dreaming about your teeth falling out in your dreams could symbolize one's impotence to act upon the world around you since having teeth is an essential instrument to eat, communicate, defend yourself among other things. For Freud, it could also symbolize the feeling 'castration' a child naturally goes over when growing up and establishing formal authority relations with your mother, father and even brother/sisters. I'm not saying that this second interpretation is what is exactly portrayed in this cake nor do I want do discuss if Freud's concept of this Complex should be worth debating, but this could be a clear parallel that as well the "castration complex" is closely tied to the feeling of loss, impotence and guilt - those emotions could obviously be tied to Sunny's inability to cope with his past traumatic experience is shown here.
    I think that this cake is a neat symbolism that I think is worth to mention! Really liked your video! 😄

    something you missed, the single daisy doesnt only represent "faith", although what you said is certainly applicable. In the language of flowers, specifically a SINGLE daisy represents the phrase "i won't tell"

    only 2 mins in so far, but a small correction from this and the previous video - if i'm not mistaken, in this case it'd be his ''subconscious mind'' not ''unconscious mind''. the subconscious contains memories and things you aren't consciously aware of, where as unconscious refers to the state of being asleep.. aka unconscious. for a more accurate explanation, i'd encourage people to looks these terms up, I just explained it as best as I can rn. there's not a huge difference between the two, so it's really not a big deal, just wanted to mention it. best of luck!

    • @DetectiveMar
      @DetectiveMar  Рік тому +1

      I use "unconscious" in the sense of Freud and Jung etc., not in the everyday sense of being unconscious. The "unconscious mind" as in the part of the mind wherein the underlying processes which are opposed to the conscious processes take place, such as repressed memories, unacceptable impulses and so on. In that framework, the subconscious simply describes parts of the conscious process which are currently not in awareness. See the Wikipedia page for "unconscious mind". :)
