    These Bosch machines are or were built like submarines and are a pleasure to use. I do virtually all the laundry and my wife does the folding and we have been married 40 years. My machines are over 15 years old and still working perfectly. If you are at all mechanically inclined and something needs replacing, it is relatively easy to diagnose it and to order a part online and replace it yourself without a service call, thanks to UA-cams like this. Bosch stopped making vented dryers because of lint fires. Since the washer spins at 1200, the clothes come out nearly dry and drying time is short and power use is minimized. If you try to dry clothes that have been washed in a toploader and not spun so fast, they won't dry. I find the dryer balls helpful to stop sheets from getting balled up. Put them in the middle of the sheets. My machines are on my route to the garage, and the smaller capacity is not a problem as I don't put it off til the laundry room is overflowing. When we had 12 people here on vacation for a week, the machines were going constantly without a problem. I am told that in Europe they tend to do smaller loads frequently, unlike Americans. In summer I can direct the warm air to the garage and in winter to the house. The washer adjusts the water level to the amount of clothes.The maintenance of the dryer is not a big deal and takes a few minutes once a month, but you have to do it. Leave yourself a reminder. I thoroughly enjoy these machines. Mine are side by side because there is a cabinet above and I built a sturdy platform to elevate them 20 inches off the ground so there is not as much bending over. Obviously Germans have a lot to be shameful about (holocaust, diesel emissions (including Bosch), stealing the prototype of the Beetle from a Hungarian Jew named Josef Ganz who was arrested by the Gestapo on trumped up charges, then Hitler gave money to Nazi Ferdinand Porsche to bring them to market , but these are great machines.

      I agree. Just replacing my Bosch Axxis W/D I purchased in 2000 with the 500 set. Hope I get even half the life out of this set. I had my dryer limiter switch trip once. Easy fix. I thought that was what happened again when the dryer wouldn't heat, but, alas, it was something else. I was sure investing money in 23 year old appliances was a bad idea and got another Bosch set.

    I bought my Bosch washer and dryer 16 years ago, I have never heard that they only last 4 years. They are built for life. Mine are still running perfectly.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin

      You are one of the lucky few. Bosch is a better name nowadays but front load washers have proven themselves very unreliable. Generally the bearing assembly goes within 5 years if you have a family. If you are retired and do fewer wash loads they last much longer. I’ve been married 28 years, have 4 kids and this is my 5th washer dryer combo. Our first washer dryer were the old fashioned type and most likely would still be running today. 1:45 The grilled opening on the front is for a cooling fan for the compressor and electronics. You can see the fan right behind the opening. It only comes on when the unit starts to get warm after running for a long time. Mine hardly ever runs. The air that dries your clothes does not get sucked in there, nor does it get blown out the back.

    It's neat they have the actual heat/cool coils in an isolated loop from the dryer airflow so you can pull the heat exchanger out to clean the lint off it.

    I bought this pair of Bosch washer and dryer 4 yrs ago. The washer is great. I love the allergen cycle. And I always use at least one extra rinse. The dryer on the other hand has recently been giving me grief because of the dreaded DR error code. This indicates a drainage pump issue. I clean out the condenser monthly. But what is hard to get to is the well in back of the condenser underneath a lid which is impossible to remove. This is where the pump resides. This well needs cleaning. I wish the well did not have a lid at all, making maintenance easier.

    • @russellgosse7274
      @russellgosse7274 Місяць тому

      We have the 500 series too and while the washer is great, we regret getting it with the dryer. The dryer needs a lot of regular maintenance to avoid the DR code you mentioned. Since the dryer powers the washer, you can't replace it easily enough with a vented one. As a result, we do not recommend the Bosch dryer.

    I just had my 23 year old dryer go kaput. It was a Bosch Axxis. I discarded the still-working washer and dryer and ordered the Bosch 500 set. I am concerned I will be happy with the heat pump dryer but I felt like a full-sized unit likely would not fit into the closet I had built 23 years ago for my Axxis washer and dryer. So, my two front load Bosch washer and dryer lasted far beyond the 4 years this man is saying is the life of front load washer and dryers. Now, I will say I am a single person so I don't do a lot of laundry. I hope I love my 500 as much as I loved my Axxis set.

      I have one and YES it does emit heat and moisture into the room. We have ours in a guest room and it’s fine when there aren’t guests in there. The dryer is horrible, imo. If you line dry it’s good for a final dry or wrinkle release. But you put towels in the dryer it will take over 2.5 hours and without using dryer sheets, clothes come out smelling “cooked.”

    We got the Blomberg 24” pair, very pleased with them. The ventless dryer is complimented by the 1600 rpm spin speed on the washer, makes for shorter drying times. These ventless dryers are better explained as a heat pump. Once the idea off a heat pump is understood, it applies equally well to understanding heating or A/C.

    I bought an LG front load stackable pair 14 years ago, still going strong. I've been researching for their replacement though in case they do decide to walk off the job some day. I think I'm down to another LG set, GE, Bosch, or Miele. I wanted a Bosch dishwasher, but couldn't get one due to production delays, ended up with a Miele and I'm kinda hooked now. But Bosch rates slightly better for reliability, so it's still in the running. Thanks for your video! Nice to see real world experience.

    My 2001 Frigidaire large capacity (3.5cu ft washer, 5 cu ft dryer) lasted a good 22 years. The washer's running fine but the dryer now smells like burnt rubber (I guess it's rubber from the soundproofing that melted in; my daughters like to pile up clothes on the dryer instead of putting them at their proper place, but that's another story.) Strong burning rubber smell from the element, it's not the belt. Fire hazard, we could say.
    Now, since they're pretty old, I don't want to spend much on them because they could give up the magic smoke anytime. Anyway, a repairman said that in this case most of the dryer's guts had to be replaced if it came to this.
    Soooo... I'm now shopping for a replacement. What did you say about new front load washers? 4 years life? I'd really like to know which models you're refering to, because I want to avoid these like plague. I'm looking for machines which, like mines, would have at least 20 years life expectancy.
    Why front load? 1: stackability, 2: energy costs (less water/less hot water/my washer wring the clothes really well, so I guess it's a feature of front loads, and drier clothes = less energy lost in the dryer).
    I'd personally avoid Samsung and LG dryers, mostly because I don't have experience with their possible longevity (and the Samsung Washergate/exploding washers), I'd rather stick with Maytag/Frigidaire because they used to be built like tanks. I'd give Bosch a shot, but they're double the price of other models around here (around 4K CAD$ VS 2-2.5K for other models).

    You say that front loaders only last 4 yrs typically? We’ve had a Bosch (large size made for North American market) washer for 12 years now, washing for a family of 4 including years of washing diapers and only just sold to downsize to a smaller compact washer - also Bosch. If others front load washers aren’t lasting that long they are not well made.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  4 роки тому

      Yes, they aren't well made. We have a family of 6 and have been through a couple sets of front loaders. They are designed to fail "planned obsolescence". One time I bought just the washer (bearing and shaft went on the old washer) and the dryer died 1 month after the washer. Had to replace it too. Brutal! So because of the new ductless technology I thought I would try it as it allowed a different placement. Got the Bosch hoping that it would last. Glad top hear you had good luck with yours. It's reassuring. Thanks for your comment!

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin

      The dryer has a standard 220v dryer cord and plug and the washer plugs into an outlet on the dryer. It’s a weird set up but eliminates the need for 1 wall plug. You should be able to get the part from Bosch directly or you could try an appliance parts shop. I’m close to Barrie Ontario so I go to the appliance shack. The ladies that work there are a veritable wealth of knowledge.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  5 років тому +2

      Bearings are a common problem across the brands. Appliances aren't made like they used to be and servicing a front load washer is a nightmare. They build the whole washer around the spindle so when you change the bearing and spindle (always change both) you have the entire washer in pieces. You are one of the lucky few to have a working front loader after all these years. Good purchase and great luck! I would check with some appliance rebuild places for that hinge. They may have one.

    Just bought a condo with this W/D combo and dryer keeps shorting out. Cleaned out the dryer as you describe in your video but that did not solve the problem, so had a serviceman over recommended by Bosch. He needed to take the cover off the condenser to diagnose the problem, but could not get it off for fear of breaking it. So, he left without solving the problem but did say before he left, if it is the condenser which he thinks it is, it will cost at a minimum $500. for any part and perhaps more if more than one part involved. I/ve already spent $120 for him to come out and do nothing and he told me at this point it would probably be best to buy a new one at $1200. ! This one is only 3 years old.! Not very happy with Bosch or their service. Since I am not original owner Bosch would not even send out a second service guy to see if he could get the cover off without charging me.

    I turn mine on before I put the clothes in and see shut the door, and then very gently hold my finger on the start button, you don't need to press anything, just touch it if that makes sense, and since I started doing that it seems to always start first time with no delay.... I love mine and it's so much cheaper to run than my old one 😂 yeah the fluff that comes out, apparently it improves the energy efficiency of you remove the fluff after each load. I think the used air comes out of the front but I might be wrong... It's more like warm than hot... Wish I had a drain near the machine like you have, so I could connect the water hose... The tank at the top left holds enough for two or three loads of washing and drying stops automatically if you forget to empty it be and it's full.... But summer is here now so it's having a vacation 😃

I'm going to try your hack and see if I can start the machines easier.

I am so disappointed in the dryer especially, so much so that I decided to purchase a Miele dishwasher, rather than Bosch and will most likely never buy a Bosch appliance again. I have the ventless dryer and it's a nightmare to deal with! Nothing dries well so I put a ceiling fan in my laundry room and a drying rack too. I dry until it's as dry as possible...difficult on rainy days and then hang everything on the drying rack and the fan on. According to the repair person, these are known issues with this dryer. It worked well, if not quirky, for 2.5 years, but I'm about ready to sell them because the dryer is such a drama queen! As a European I'm always surprised by American and Canadian thoughts on front load appliances. They are literally all we have used in Europe for a good four decades. No one under 40 has ever seen a top load machine unless it was a vintage one hidden at the back of their grandparents garage! We use them because they are vastly more efficient, wash better, damage clothes less, use less water, detergent and electricity and spin much faster than top load machines reducing drying time. They stack easily and can also fit under a counter top. They are cheap here- a basic washer starts from about £160 which is about USD200. For that, you might expect a ten year life with ordinary domestic use. Bosch is considered mid market, and will cost from about £350 for a mid spec machine. Miele are the very best, will last twenty years plus and start from £600. We are spoiled with warranties here- One year minimum by law, but most come with at least 3 or 5 year warranties, Miele come with ten. Under EU law even after warranty expiry we may still have recourse to the retailer if the machine fails, although with older out of warranty machines this may be a contribution towards the cost of a replacement.
    Also, just noticed your washers still have hot and cold water connections. Ours have been cold fill only for years. They heat the water internally, which is more efficient, gives more accurate wash temperatures and doesn't cause biological washing powder to loose its effectiveness- when showered with hot water in the detergent draw you can denature the cleaning enzymes rendering them useless. I wonder if the US hasn't switched over to self heating machines because generally washers there rely on a standard electrical outlet which doesn't have the same power supplying capabilities as ours? We can pull 3000 watts minimum from any outlet- dedicated sockets for things like dryers and washers are unnecessary.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  4 роки тому +2

      Hey thanks for your comment! The appliances in North America and Europe are very different. I have no idea why. The reason we complain about them is because it's absolutely justified here. The appliances are shit now. No joke. It used to be you got new appliances after 20-40 years because you wanted a new kitchen and the colours didn't match your colour scheme or they finally died and parts were no longer available. Now a dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer rarely make it 5 years. The front load washers sounded like a good idea but they are designed to fail. Planned obsolescence! For example, the last washer and dryer set I bought was Inglis and the washer bearing went (cost just $100 more to buy new vs. getting repaired) so I bought a new washer and then the dryer died within a month of the washer. As for the appliances you speak of, they just aren't available here. Just like European cars aren't available here. Our electrical systems are slightly different - normal outlets are 120V but appliances like stoves, dryers and air conditioners run on 240V circuits. You would think with all this "globalization" and "Free Trade" that we would have the same products available but it seems that an ocean apart puts us in a different galaxy for certain things, even if the manufacturer is the same. It makes no sense...
      Cheers!

      A front loader is worth its weight in gold IMO because they spin so much faster so your clothes are dryer when you put them into the dryer. So the dryer runs for a shorter time. There are other advantages but this alone makes it worth it.

      The dryer has a 220V plug and they designed the washer to plug into the dryer and use that power source. Not sure why. Maybe because it's a European brand, maybe it's because they want to sell in sets instead of separates or maybe they thought it would be convenient for the consumer to need only one outlet for the set. I don't know for sure and I'm all out of speculation... LOL!

    $3000 for the pair? I wouldn't pay $300 for both, after watching all the hassle of the clean out and everything getting wet when you open it up. I have a Panda portable washer and it's not have the hassle that these are.

      Front loaders are pricey and this one is new technology, so of course, they charge more. However it was bought specifically to fit under the basement stairs without the need of venting it outside. I couldn't easily vent a regular dryer from this spot.

    I don’t think this is the best. In Europe they have heat pump dryers. Unfortunately we don’t have too many options in USA.
    The whirlpool heat pump ventless I have has a design flaw.

      So what is the flaw?

    • @richiesd1

      Rob's Garage Woodworking , the whirlpool is the only heat pump ventless dryer in the US market. The condenser cannot be pulled out for cleaning so if not maintained daily it will clog up with lint.
      Wish we had high efficiency choices in USA. I like the Bosch but the US model is old tech. In Europe Bosch has heat pump models.

      LG now has a heat pump model that is “self cleaning”. I don’t own it.
      BTW I own city condos where only ventless dryers can be used (no exhaust pipes for vented machines). I have used many ventless models.

    At one time, Bosch was a quality product manufactured in Europe. Not so any more - they're produced offshore. Now many North American large appliances are manufactured in conglomerated plants that spit out appliances under different labels but look the same and use many similar internal components. We're getting what we pay for, JUNK!

      Well not everyone in the world lives in Texas... So you would have to buy the appropriate appliances for your geographical location. This also allows me to place the dryer in an area of the house where I could not put a conventional dryer.

    I really hate this bosch washer/dryer series. It's so slow, it can take 4 hours to go through one load of laundry. I can't believe it takes over 2 hours to dry my clothes. It also says you can't fully load the washer/dryer for certain settings. Garbage!

    Terrible video making people not buying the Bosch dryer and washer because the washer needs 240V power supple from the build-in dryer outlet.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  3 роки тому

      Dryers are normally 240V but washers are usually 120V. It's a good idea to plug the washer into the dryer and run them both on 240V but if the dryer breaks then the washer is useless unless you add that style of 240V outlet.

      Becky Simpson They don't work in the way you think they do! The air in the dryer never vents to the room- it stays within the dryer and the heat exchange unit. It is heated, passed through the clothes picking up moisture. It then passes through the heat exchanger, where it cools, the water condenses out, then the cycle continues. The room air is only used to cool the heat exchanger. It never mixes with the dryer air. The only thing that happens is that it is warmed. This is useful in cooler climates as it warms your house and reduces the need for heating, but obviously not desirable in warmer climates where you will then have to pay to run aircon!
