    Thank you for the response. The one outdoor model that I have, the FI8906 (incorrectly referenced in my first post as the 9806) works quite well. It has the IRCut filter so the picture is very nice. No speaker, mic or pan/tilt function though. If I had a critique, it would be that the motion sensing works either too well or not well enough. If I want to pick up a person at a distance, it will also pick up branches slightly blowing in the wind. Works great for picking up cars though.

    Great videos; certainly helped me chose the Foscam F18910W for what I need. I now have the camera up and running.
    One question that perhaps you can help with - can several cameras be accessed and controlled through the same single (Internet Explorer) interface at the same time? I see you have three interfaces open in your tests. I need to be able to monitor three cameras remotely (I have the one working now). I note there are three radio buttons that seem to show one, four and nine images respectively at the top of the user interface. Have you tried this?

    I'll keep that in mind next time. I tried to focus on what's different between the 3 Foscams. In my videos where I demonstrated just each of them individually, I show the pan and tilt.

    My issue with motion activation is with the false alarms. I tried lowering the sensitivity but I still get a lot of notifications a day. I haven't reviewed an outdoor model yet. I'm currently trying to get my hands on a outdoor model for review.

    OK question can you do a video on how to set them up to view from the internet. I can video them all with the web browser through my home network. were I can set the web gui of one cam to view the other cams but over the internet when I can only see the one cam and when I select to view the others they don't show up or fail to show up. how can that be done for viewing out side of my network.

    Thank you for responding to my question. I have another question for the fi8910w, the speaker and mic feature. Say I have my cam at home and I am remotely away from home and using my smartphone to look into my cam, can i use my smartphone to communicate with someone at home that is near to the cam ? can i hear them and can i speak thru my smartphone the have them hear me ? or is this feature only available remotely thru a computer or laptop?

    First, thanks for the videos. I am setting up surveillance for my family business, and your videos have been very helpful.
    Second, I hope I am not asking too much, but I was hoping you could give me some advice. For the sake of brevity, I will lay out my problem. I need overnight surveillance of an outdoor lot the size of a football field, preferably with motion activation and e-mail alert. Are there any good outdoor ip cameras you would recommend, or possibly a surveillance system?

Thank you.

    many thanks for your recommendations and videos! have you tried any of the other brands like tenvis, wanscam or others? i've been curious about the irobot3 and how it compares to the FI9821W. Of course my question applys to installing them under a large eave like one that covers your front doors that is at least 4 feet from door to the outside of exposed weather under this eave/canopy over the front door rain nor snow would hit the cam so my question applies mounting one under a protected eave/canopy out doors.

    Good review. I have been trying to find information on the FI19xx (and several other cameras).
    Did anyone test video recordings with audio when triggered by motion? And, how long is the recording going for? Does a re-trigger keep the recording going when motion continues? Is there a pre-recording (to see what initiated the trigger)?
    Thanks

    The FI9821W came out 3 weeks or so after I purchased the FI9820W. So if you are going to buy one of the HD Foscams, I would suggest getting the newer model. Basically, the newer model gives you a wider viewing angle.
    And, it would be weird for me to recommend a model they no longer sell.

    I've had two FI8910W's for just over a year now and since day-one they have both rebooted at random times. In a given day they'll reboot maybe 3 times on average. I've never been able to determine why they do this but I've noticed a lot of people with these style camera's complain of these random reboots.
    I programmed mine to automatically go to position one (1) upon rebooting so it always goes back to the position I prefer. You can set this up in the Administration, PTZ Settings.

    For indoor, if it's for a baby's crib, I like the FI8910W (low cost, gets the job done). If it's to monitor an area, I like the FI9821W (needs more bandwidth for better image and has a good viewing angle).

    Very nice video. Do you use any of your FI89xxWs outside? I'd like to set one up outside the front door. It would be sheltered from any rain but my concern is for humidity, temperatures, etc. I'm contemplating the Foscam FI8909W-NA for this. I have an FI9806 outdoor model watching the driveway. It's bigger than I'd like for the front door. I know these are made to be indoor cameras but since you have an outdoor test, I thought I'd ask if you had any experience you'd like to share. Thanks!

  • @AwkwardHamster
    @AwkwardHamster  11 років тому

    Yes, you can attach a speaker.
    I noticed a longer voice/sound lag with the FI9820W than with the FI8918W and the FI8910W.
    So, I think will be helpful to tell the people you're communicating with to be patient and that it's not instantaneous like a telephone.

    Hi. Problem with the motion sensing is that the one built into Foscam sends false alerts even when the sensitivity is turned down. There are other software you can use like vitamin d. But you need to make whichever software you plan to use works with the model of camera purchased.
    You'll most likely be purchasing a webcam that has 1MP, at least.
    I'm sure if there is a will there is a way to tell people to get off your property. But I'll leave that to folks who work more with security to advise.

    Excellent video. A question, looking at the cameras from the Foscam US site, I understand the resolution, some are 680, 720p, or 920p, but there is some other terminology I do not understand, the V2 and P2P, as well as the H.264, what are those differences? Which model do you recommend for an indoor camera less than a $100? Thanks buddy.

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  9 років тому +1

      Jorge Alberto Flores Leyva V2 was just to stand for a revised version of FI9821W. More memory to accept the firmware changes. H.246 is the compression used for the HD units. It's just a standard. P2P is a pear to pear communication between viewing app and the camera. The camera is giving a unique ID and when this ID is entered to the Foscam Viewer you can view the camera, even from outside your home, without having to create a port forwarding rule on the router. But if you want to use a recording solution, you still have to create port forwarding rules. For security, any of the HD units would work. For under $100, you're basically looking at FI9821W V2 or FI9821P (amzn.to/1jvJmBa). For monitoring a baby in a crib, I like the FI9810W (amzn.to/NnirsS).

    I'm about to look at the 21W as well. It doesn't appear that they offer a manual Zoom on any of these cameras which would be nice. I'm comparing this version over X10, which have a similar look, but theirs offer zoom control, but from what I've read Foscam is better than X10.

    You are really awesome, thank you so much. So what I understand from you is that can install an exterior camera as Foscam FI8904W and ftp everything to the server without a computer or sd card. If this is the case that would be great. what is your recommendation as far as indoor and outdoor? Foscam FI8904W for outdoor, and FI8910W for indoor for good quality overall?
    Thanks again

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      The units I have reviewed record based on motion detection. I think if you want surveillance, the Synology would be a better alternative.
      Foscam has a number of outdoor units but I only reviewed one, FI9828W, because that seems more practical. It's HD and has a 3x optical zoom.
      I use FI8910W for monitoring newborns in the crib. By far I purchased more FI8910W then all the others combined but I use it as a baby unit. For security, I would recommend a HD unit like FI9831P.

    I enjoyed your review. I have two FI-8908W's (same as 8918w but with alarm connector) and two FI-8910W's and I agree, the 8910 audio is far better. It seems to me that for some reason they went back to the 8918/8909;s audio for the 8920, instead of using 8910 (notice the feedback in your review) which is a dumb move on their part. I'm sticking with 8910w as it is overall better than the other two. Although they are not outdoor, hanging from the eves of roofs, these work great!...

      Hi. This is an indoor model. It's built to stream live video. I would recommend an outdoor model rather than trying to make an indoor model work outdoors. Many people have successfully installed the Foscam. Some encounter issues. The two most common issues I hear are initial wifi setup and the act of accessing it from outside the network.
      Hope this helps.

    A great review, thanks!
    Three questions.
    1. Will the static be reduced if I plug in a mic, and I use a small jack (without the cable) in the audio out plug, since I don't need the talk-back feature?
    2. I'm planning to buy it as a baby monitor and use a cat5 cable, so that I don't slow down my other wifi devices. Have you tried this and is the feed more consistent?
    3. I don't really need exceptional image quality :), I just need to be able to see what's going on, so do you think 8910W would be enough?
    Thanks!

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      I haven't tried using an external mic. I plugged the mic and speaker to turn off these options since there isn't a software setting to turn them off.
      My cat5 cable can't reach the baby's room. I have not seen a slowdown on my network with the MPEG units. I have fast internet, 50/25, so I haven't been impacted with the HD units too.
      For baby crib monitoring, I would recommend the FI9810W. I've purchased a lot of these units and gifted it to friends. Most of the time, night vision is on so I didn't see the point of getting an HD unit for monitoring the baby's crib.

    Since I don't work for Foscam, I would not be able to explain why Foscam choose that naming convention. I agree that any new customer would think the 18W is newer than the 10W.

    Hi Awkward Hamster. Your reviews are awesome!
    I'm looking to buy the FI8910W to use as a baby monitor and I'm hoping you could recommend an app that features sound and push notifications.
    Thanks!

      Hi. I haven't used the audio on the Foscams because of the constant static. There is the Baby Monitor app in the Apple app store but I wasn't too thrilled about it.
      I haven't seen a Foscam app that has push notification. There's e-mail notification but that's another grief.

      Paul, I don't know if you will see this or be notified of it so late in the game but I would recommend Blue Iris Software. I use it to monitor/control 9 Foscam camera both inside and outside the home and 2 watching over my mother-in-law's place out on Long Island. (I'm in NJ) and it works perfectly.
      The best price I have seen for it is on Amazon.
      The Android app costs $10 and I have it installed on both my phone and tablet. That also works great for both video and audio monitoring. I think there is also a iPhone app if you are an "i" but you'll want to check that first.
      The one caveat is that the desktop software is also the server so you have to have a machine running 24/7 for this to work.

    Hi there AH. Thanks for the videos, they're really helpful :)
    I'm still unsure which model i should be looking at though, to be mounted outside of my home, under the front door canopy. Purely to monitor who is approaching my door.
    I have just received the FI8910W in white, but after reading reviews and watching your comparison videos, i'm not sure that it's suitable for outdoor use.
    Please can you advice me on the correct model for use outdoors?
    Should i return the F18910W and get the F18918W model?
    please help. Thank you!

      Hi. I hear people buy the indoor models and place them outdoors because it's affordable. I personally won't do that because the indoor models are not water resistant. I also live in an area that experiences rain and snow. Some folks compensate by purchasing a dome and put an indoor model there.
      The FI8918W is also an indoor model.
      It sounds like you want an outdoor unit that has pan/tilt. I have not tested those models since they cost $200 or more.
      For watching your door, I would recommend purchasing a HD unit, like FI9805W. amzn.to/L7FYQG
      It cost $200 but you can make out more details of a person's face over a camera that is not HD.
      Hope that helps.

    I'll do an indoor comparison test.
    This outdoor test was to basically show to color accuracy of the three models.
    It's too cold outdoors right now to run such a test. And, these camera's aren't rated for outdoor use. They risk rust, fog, moisture damage, etc.

    Hi pal. I liked ur video. I'm new to the ip camera. My sons black T-shirt and black track suit appears pink. And so does green grass. I'm using easy n f3 187. Is this normal for ip cams. I see one of urs u tested wasn't the best of colours so was hoping u could shed some light. N the sound is awfull if u can hear it u have to go right up to it to hear it n still it's very quiet lol

      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      With my FI8918W, it made things look pinkish too. With the newer cameras that have the IR Cut sensor, the images looked better.

    $500? Oh my goodness. I don't think it's that fragile but if you encounter any issues, the Foscam has a 1 year warranty. I don't know if they have a distribution center in Brazil though.

    PLEASE ANSWER:
    I just would like to know if I can record on the sd card and then upload it into my ftp website server provider without having a computer.
    Another question can I use the indoor camera FI8910W outdoor by placing it in a plastic for weather protection, the reason I am asking is that I don't want to use the outdoor cameras because they don't come with an sd card and able to upload without a computer. any feedfback?
    thanks,

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      Sam Sbai In terms of FTP, I have only recorded it to SD card OR FTP, not both. I don't think you can do both. The computer does not need to be turned on because the Foscam has it's own operating system.I don't use indoor units outdoors, even if I were to buy a dome. I live
      in an area that's hot in the summer, freezing in the winter, and humid
      other days. The moisture would ruin the unit or fog the lens.

    Hey AH, Firstly, if you're using FiOS, ask Verizon for a newer Wireless N router. The latest is Rev. "I" (eye.) It's much better than the Wirless G you have now. Secondly, Foscam has discontinued the FI9820W and replaced it with the FI9821W. I have both and can tell you that the 21W is MUCH MUCH better. The field of view is now about the same as the 10W. The Web interface has really improved and best of all, night vision performance is much improved. I haven't tried the audio, however.

  • @BruceNCao

    I purchased 9821W to use as a baby monitor. It's kinda buggy. I never could set it up to be wireless (I have installed at least 20 Foscam 9810 and have 5 at my house and 5 at my business, so I know how to set up wireless). After 2 months, it is now broke. It just sits and cycles itself. I called Foscam, they'll send a replacement and I have to send this back AT MY COST... and that's AFTER they receive this broken 9821w. While it worked, it frequently makes loud clicking sounds. It's very buggy.

  • @AwkwardHamster
    @AwkwardHamster  11 років тому

    I haven't used it outside. I would not because where I have has spring, summer, fall, and winter. People have told me they purchased a dome to encase the Foscam when they put it outside. I'm not for it because it's not rated for outdoor but people have done it.

    Hey buddy just wanted to clarify one thing, my question is - can we use these camera without Ethernet cable like wirelessly. Why am asking is all the sellers I asked they said u can only use em with cable so I was thinking y is it called wireless camera.

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      All of these units are wireless. In this video, all the units are accessed using my home Wifi.
      I use the ethernet cable for the initial setup. Afterward, I unplug the cable and just use it over wifi. I demonstrated this in each of the camera setup videos.

    What's the best cam for surveillance around the house, outdoors? I want high def and recording capabilities. And night vision if possible. Audio/mic not a priority.

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      Hi. For surveillance, buying the camera is the easy part. Finding the program to administer it is more time consuming.
      I would suggest first picking the program or network video recorder you want to use. Then, see which IP cameras are compatible with it.
      If you want to stick with Foscam, consider the FI9826W or FI9831W.

    • @AkashGolf
      @AkashGolf 10 років тому

      So what are some of the softwares that you recommend? What software goes good with foscam? I'm basing my purchase from your video, I'll make sure to use ur Amazon link too :-)

      I'm thinking about the 18921w. I know it's not an outdoor camera, but it's under total cover away from elements. What's your thoughts on this camera compared to other ip cams?

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  10 років тому

      There's a lot of good IP Cameras out there. I choose Foscam because it's widely supported, has a phone number for me to call for support, and affordable.
      The FI9821W is good. I use to use it a lot until I got the FI9831W.
      I would not use any indoor IP camera outdoors.

  • @AwkwardHamster
    @AwkwardHamster  11 років тому

    I'll see if I can add a outdoor nighttime shot in my next review.

  • @AwkwardHamster
    @AwkwardHamster  11 років тому

    I buy the FI8910W the most because it's MPEG and it makes a child monitor. If I were to watch a bigger area, I would get the FI9821W, but that model isn't rated for outdoor use.

  • @AwkwardHamster
    @AwkwardHamster  11 років тому

    I heard of the X10 years ago but never tried it. Don't know why.
    I didn't want to purchase a camera with manual zoom because that would just add to the cost. I didn't want to spend too much money. Besides, the digital zoom is good enough for it to function as my baby cam.
