Connor, don't listen to the hate. Your content is incredibly valuable and fun to watch for those of us unable to have that lifestyle. Just keep doing what you're doing.
Something I love to do with my husband when we're in China visiting wholesale markets is let him ask and negotiate the price for an item first, then I go after him to ask the price for the same item, to see how much vendors try to overcharge him just because he doesn't look Chinese, even though we're both Americans and both speak fluent Mandarin but he isn't Asian-American. Usually, I get the real price and he gets the inflated tourist price that's anywhere from 2 to 20 times higher. Then we only buy from vendors that didn't try to overcharge him. Some will argue that business is business, and if you find someone stupid enough to pay the inflated price it's all fair game, but refusing to budge and negotiate with people based on ethnicity seems super racist to me.
Agreed. In countries like India, Turkey, Morocco and Egypt all expect some form of haggling. If you dont, it can be seen as disinterest or a lack of respect for the transaction. Its a cultural norm.
Hey Connor I'm a big fan of your videos and I love seeing your perspective on the places you visit! I know a lot of the criticism you get is dumb and I appreciate you going out your way to explain the culture of the places you go to defend against that criticism. For example, I like how you explained here how bargaining works in India to effectively scalp tourists. My gripe against how you address the criticism is how you want to turn this into a "woke" thing in response to a single criticism of how you wanted to bargain over 60 cents. For people who don't know the culture of bargaining in India, this probably looked a little extra, but after learning more about how scalping targets visitors to the country like you, it probably makes a bit more sense. It feels like you're vindictive in proving how bad of an experience you have when you visit India, but you should support that without complaining about wokies because it makes it sound like you're the snowflake who wants to name-call instead of addressing the criticism in fruitful ways given the really cool and unique opportunities you have. All I ask is that you be a little more good faith to criticism that likely comes more from ignorance rather than ideology.
Yea It's understandable to feel defensive about the criticism tbf, but blaming "woke" feels weird and like projection. It's more likely that his mostly Western audience simply doesn't understand a culture that exists on the other side of the world, and is not trying to "cancel" him
I'm pretty sure he gets a lot of "woke" comments that talk about his whiteness and foreigness in these countries he visits which is why he harps on the woke ideology so much. I think Connors view of travel and the world is that he's a person like anyone else anywhere else. So when it comes to being scammed in India because he's white, or being burdened with the expectation he has to soften his opinion of a place or a person / culture because he is either white or American is a form of reverse racism being pushed on him. He is just one guy traveling the world being honest about his experiences and taking the piss out of situations in these countries. A lot of travel channels try to oversell and embellish their experiences in these countries wither to be dishonest to their viewers or due to some kind of guilt not to present minorities in a bad light.. I understand where he's coming from because the white guilt woke stuff is really imbedded in the western world. I'm black and I see this all the time. Both sides of the spectrum.
@@ethanansel-kelly3266 I get that but explain what else other than "woke" ideology would describe someone who complains about their posh lives in the western world but goes to another country and willing allows themselves to be scammed because they are foreign? How would you feel if let's say someone from Japan came to your country and it was common place for Taxi drivers and vendors to hike prices just because they were Japanese? How do you think the Japanese would feel about your country? What would think of the Japanese that come and willing pay the hiked prices because they "feel sorry" or make more than the average native?
@@ethanansel-kelly3266that’s exactly how I felt. He came off as the same type of person he’s complaining about, or even just another chudie, in this video. I’ll just have to remind myself to only watch his travel vlogs and avoid the pod 😂
Dude, so fucking refreshing to hear a youtuber speak like this. I just saw the Channel 5 video about Mexico City yesterday, so it was neat to see clips referred to in the beginning, but the reason I've come back to your channel is due to the respect you've shown other cultures (to extent) but I love that you don't take shit and you'll talk shit right back to them, and openly question the shady practices.
I completely agree with you, why should we pay 100 times the local price. You can see the effect of this in parts of Spain, now the local population is tired of tourists. Because we drive the prices up
i agree with your points, but blaming "wokies" and "blue hair" people is a tad annoying to be honest and you could very easily explain yourself without that sort of projection as it all it does is contribute towards a divide.
I definitely get your point. People just have different views. I would simply pay the extra couple cents just to get going because I'm not one to negotiate all to much. If it was an absurd amount difference then yeah I would bargain or go else where. But im also one to pay slightly more for convenience. I don't necessarily think in doing that it is raising the prices for the locals. I'm sure the people who live their understand what the fair price is to get from one place to another and their isnt that many tourist going to these places to take up any taxis from the locals. I do find it annoying but if theyre starting off the bargain already extremely over priced I wont even bargain with them. Ill take my business else where. I also dont shop anywhere when theyre outside hassling you to go into their shop. Ill go into the shops that are quietly waiting for customers.
I've spent quite some time in India, I love this country and often hated it at the same time (like a lot of people do). Regarding the bargaining: I see it as adapting to their culture. If it's a given to bargain in a country, I will go along. And yes people will try to charge you 10 times more.. is it annoying? yes. but at the same time.. whatever.. nice try. It's a good practice to take things not that seriously. Nothing is black and white in India. I'd probably do the same if I'd be in those peoples shoes! I've made the experience that if you keep a friendly attitude, you've almost "won" the situation. People will respect you. It's like a game and it shows someones character and resilience. It's easy to come to India narrow minded, expecting things to work how you know them, get angry and judgemental.. if you do, India will give you exactly the same back - it's a mirror, if you like it or not.
was watching ur vietnam video and actually thinking about this, but this is amazing and i 100% agree. ur one of the best content creators on the platform right now btw sir, keep doing u!
As having traveled to 50 countries I totally agree. It would be the same thing as somebody would try to charge you 3€ for a plastic bag in an European country where it should be like 20 cents and obviously you wouldn’t pay that so why would you overpay them.
I posted this comment on your other channel, but I'll post it here too for visibility: >> About those rickshaw fares; I’m not from Delhi, but mostly if you hail a rickshaw or cab from the street you’ll be charged a minimum of 150-200 rupees regardless of the distance. This is the case in many cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, and even Mumbai. Uber is essential now to get a good fare. Or, you could share a cab with others going in the same direction and actually pay that low of a price. After making that comment, I found out that the govt. mandated rickshaw fare in Delhi is set to Rs. 25 for the first kilometer, and Rs. 8/km after that. The thing is, not a single rickshaw driver you approach on the street will abide by that number, regardless of whether you're a local or foreigner. They used to abide by it, till 5 years ago. It's because of inflation and the precipitous fall of the rupee's value.
Okay, bro. I'm 3 minutes in. You made a really good point straight off the bat then you started getting lost. I love arguing and i know it can be difficult. Respect for having a go. Gonna carry on watching now. Cheers.

There is no such thing as bad land. Its the people who live on the land that makes a place paradise, or hell on earth. The biggest difference between Switzerland and India is the people.

God I hate it when tourist attractions have separate prices for locals and tourists, I saw it on a few occasions in Java as well. That is so not ok, if I see that I usually refuse to go in. The great thing about Java however is that you have the two apps Grab and Gojek, which are basically the Uber of Indonesia. This means you never have to haggle with taxi drivers, you always pay the local price because you can just book a taxi via the local app. I heard from fellow travelers that in Bali the taxi drivers collectively chose to not work with Grab/Gojek purely for the reason of charging tourists inflated prices. Indonesia is one of my favorite countries, but I have never been to Bali and I'm not planning to ever visit it. The other islands offer the same beauty minus the destruction caused by overtourism :)
You're a real one bro. I was in vietnam during the time you "exposed" that cop and I was terrified of getting pulled over and made an example of that whole trip lmao

Not blue haired or woke, and have travelled in Nepal. I think its just the humanity of seeing people with so much less for seemingly no good reason, and then a westerner who is far wealthier by birth, with an opportunity to give back to the community that he is earning from, and not considering that maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Would it drive up prices and affect their preferences? perhaps/likely. Is earning more corelated with a higher standard of living and is that how tourism can positively influence these communities by raising the standard of living? probably. I've been in that position before and its not fun, but just food for thought. p.s. stop reading comments and just have fun :)

I think regardless of being a foreigner or not, there's a limit on how much someone can get gouged for basic services. I do think it's absurd to charge 3x, 5x, or even 10x the price they would already make money for their service. That said aggressively negotiating over 10-25 cents is just ridiculous for everyone involved. Even if 25 cents is double the cost, speaking English and dealing with clueless foreigners who probably don't understand how things work is a 100% justifiable upcharge.
