Bruh, we been throwing water like that since the 80s. I think the old folks see the water gun i think is Thai lol which is American things. Playing with water is not a new thing. we been doing that for thousands of years. the only new thing is modern music and water gun.

We’ve celebrated this way back in the late 80’s early 90’s in San Diego, Colina Park. We were shooting water guns, baby power, shaving cream, it was a blast! There was Kla Kloke, food trucks, live bands, it was so much fun!

It is “Khmer” if you are using English or a form of Khmer outside standard Khmer, like northern Khmer or forms of spoken Khmer in certain regions. In standard Khmer, many of the words ending in “r” has gone silent over the years while other forms of Khmer still rolled the “r” sound at the end of words that ends in “r”. Khmer is still spelled with the “r” in all forms of Khmer but silent when pronounced in standard Khmer. The Phnom Penh slang took it a step further by silencing the “r” within words. All forms of Khmer are uniform in how they spell words regardless of how it’s pronounced. In northern Khmer and other regions, words are pronounced how it’s spelled in Khmer. The “r” ending in many words spelled in the Khmer language is believed to be once pronounced but, again, that has changed at one point in history for standard Khmer.
Likewise, if you are using standard Khmer, you will say “Khme(r)” when using Khmer. In standard Khmer, you say “Amerik” for American and “Japon” for Japanese. If you’re Japanese and using Japanese, it’s “Nippon” for Japan and “Nihon” for Japanese. If you’re using Thai, it’s “Khmen”; Indian it’s “Kumar”, northern Khmer, other forms of Khmer outside standard Khmer or English, it’s “Khmer”… etc. If you using Spanish, Mexico is pronounced Mehico. If English, it’s Mexico.
All this is due to the different phonetics of different groups - but this is common knowledge understood by every ethnic group. Again, it’s “Khmer”, with the “r” ending if using other forms of Khmer or using English. You are correct

Heh Savi, this was not the way Cambodian people used to celebrate their new year. I am guessing here. After the refugees returned from Thailand, this water started in Cambodia. The water and powder came from two things that Thai and Khmer do as bhudists. Number 1 is the return to their parents. They would use fragrance t water to clean their parents feed as symbol of saying thanks to them. This practice was not widely practice among Cambodians. The other one is to pour water on Budha statue. I don't know what it means. In Thailand , this gesture leads to pour a little fragrant water to passer by. It later beca e water fight. Thai did this long before Cambodia. However, Cambodians normally went to pagoda playing traditional games. People would ride their bicycle from one pagoda to another. That was how people met. There would be a lot of weddings following the new year. This water fight was not a part of it. However, the new generation were born to it. That's what they only know.

Bro !we have been playing water fight since the 80 ‘s but with the balloons throwing on each other and now instead of balloons they using a plastic water gun which made in China is more convenient. Remember Thai is borrowing Khmer traditions, culture, words , and Numbers etc. We have more games that Thai don’t have beside the water gun during Khmer New Year. Remember in South East Asia was the ( Khmer Empire)

HS basically ended all of this water throwing in Phnom Penh years ago. It's only recently that it started back up. I don't remember ever seeing it done on this scale. I don't hear any Khmer people pronounce it Khmer, always K'm-eye. I'm a barang though so take that for what it's worth.

Water is used as a form of cleansing. Baby powder is used mainly for newborn, which symbolizes new beginning; therefore, water and baby powder is a symbolic meaning of cleaning our selves and started a new, make sense for it being The New Year.
Correct me if am I wrong.
