I love listening to Davy talk about film. He elevates every show with his knowledge and wry British humour. I am shocked Schindler's didn't get a mention. It's such a formidable piece of cinema.
Ralph Fiennes was a study in his portrayal of the banality of evil. The girl in the red dress in a film shot in black and white Is a clever touch.
Davy also displays the preference of a fellow Brit of, where you have to choose, it’s story over happy ending.
Davvy Flicks is the GOAT
You're far too kind, thank you! Though at the end I do say why Schindler's List, which is behind me on the wall, isn't on my list.
@@HockeyDudeJames2 Thanks kindly!
Pete, my feelings of Private Ryan are exactly the same as yours. I was completely enthralled in the ways intended, and at the end, going to my car, I broke down crying my eyes out like you evidently did also.
I can't ever remember a movie having such a dramatic impact on me. The theater was in a trance from the beginning scene. People left quiet and somber at the end. It was quiet and you saw many teary eyes.
Amazing film.
Everyone does such a good job on these episodes. Thank you! Davey sounds like a film professor. His comment on John Williams scores and how it tells you to feel is spot on. Great episode guys!!
Always a blast! Many thanks for another long, fun filled Monster's Den. Marvellous.
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Schindler’s List
3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
(Jaws is my real number 2)
A great show..so entertaining and informative. Agree with Davey that the schmaltz can at time overwhelm but the genius and love for film shines through..
Agree that Last Crusade is wonderful but surely nothing beats Schindler's List..
Enjoy folks, we'll see you in 2 weeks for genre films shot and/or set in our hometowns.
I would have loved to done this one
I am looking forward to it
Dirty Mary crazy Larry, Davy
Hi Davy! I noticed you guys haven't ranked the six Jurassic park movies yet! We all know what the best one is but Curious how you'd rank the other 5!
@@peterberg8417 they do that in this episode when Jurassic park is brought up. They basically agreed that 1’s obviously the best, 2 isn’t that good, 3 has some cool ideas and the rest aren’t good.
1. Duel
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
4. Jaws
5. The Last Crusade
6. E.T.
7. Schindler's List
/The Color Purple (tie)
8. Catch Me If You Can
9. Jurassic Park
10. Empire of the Sun
You really like duel better than Raiders?
For me, his debut Duel is in with a shout, with Dennis Weaver (television’s nice McCloud) was a man v implacable monster precursor to Jaws.
A film that was so affecting that I cannot watch it again was AI: Artificial Intelligence. That film touched me in a way no film did since RAI’s live-action Pinnochio when I was a kid in the 70’s. In a world we shall destroy, an android child proves that all that will remain is love. Originally a Kubrick project before he died.
3) Duel - saw it when first broadcast on ABC. Scared me as a kid.
2) Close Encounters
1) Last Crusade
Note: I remember when E.T. was released and playing at th Century 22 movie theater in San Jose, Raiders was still play at the Century theater in nearby Saratoga Ca. They would advertise it in the paper "for the 72 week..." etc.
No problem with his choices but Jamie's crazy. One of my first movie memories was my parents taking me along with them to see The Towering Inferno. As we were tasking seats the entire theater was rumbling like an earthquake. My parents explained to me that it was just the movie in the next theater. It was, infact, Earthquake. Theaters have been loud forever and that's a good thing.
EDIT: We saw Earthquake not too long after.
EDIT 2: I rather enjoyed that BBC version of WotW. Then it just disappeared. Did they ever do another season?
Duel all the way for me. Still brilliant and so rewatchable.
Duel is a masterpiece.
Love this content. More fim directors eps please!
No doubt in my mind: Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The "Eyes" segment from the "Night Gallery" pilot film
Great explanation Davy on why Schindlers was left off your lists. Respect.
3. Duel, 2. Duel, 1. Duel
Really?
Yes it's that good.
@@ilj1259 I thought it was boring
1) Duel / Jaws
2)Raiders of The Lost Ark
3)Jurassic Park
My top 3
1) Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
I saw the premiere in London’s Leicester Square and the sound is what struck me.
The huge speakers down both sides of the enormous 2,500 seater Empire theatre were amazing, and when the mother ship came over, everyone looked behind them as it boomed down both sides and overhead, amazing.
2) Jaws for obvious reasons.
3) Saving Private Ryan for the opening 20 minutes alone.
Genius.
One thing that’s important to note about Raiders is Spielberg wanted to direct a Bond movie and was rejected. He then went on to make Indiana Jones and it’s said that was his way of doing his own Bond movie in a way. Which is funny cause two years after Raiders, Octopussy comes out and the inspiration bounces back as it takes place in India, Bond goes up against wildlife and so on.
#1 Duel..my favorite movie of all time
#2 war of The Worlds
# 3E.T
# 4 War Horse
#5 Shindlers List
#6 Encounters of The Third Kind
#7 Jurassic Park
#8 Saving Private Ryan
#9 Temple of Doom
#10 Lincoln
Idea for a Monster's Den episode:
Movies we've seen many times and would love to watch for the first time again
You know, there are those beloved movies we can watch over and over and never get tired of. Some of them even get better every time (The Godfather comes to mind).
But then there are these movies that, for some reason, we would die to see for the first time again.
For me that would be, for example, North By Northwest. Sure, I've seen it many times and still love it. But man, wouldn't it be great to be watch it being unfamiliar with that sophisticated plot and those twists?
Another one would be Back To The Future, just because I've seen it so often and I still remember how overwhelming it was to see it for the first time.
I don't know if this topic is enough to fill an episode, but maybe you you like the idea. Cheers!
you know i just got to the point in the episode where it is pointed out india jones is based on ronald reagen. i had no idea and it makes a difference. so for children 12 and under india jones is a good thing in so far as it conditions our children to view mister reagen in a positive light and extols the virtures of the much recently besmirched idea of chauvinism that american exceptionalism is built upon but it remains so important for men who love women to set aside the trifles of childhood such as that of india jones.
Thus the casting the great Scots chauvinist Sean Connery as Indy's daddy. Terrific insight you make a lot of sense!
My top 5:
5.Close Encounters
4.Jaws
3.ET
2.AI-Artificial Intelligence
1.Saving Private Ryan
This is pretty tough - made easier w/o Jaws tho..
Close Encounters got SO much nuance of actual UFO history correct! Incredible, actually. That one I get a lot out of and the scene where the boy was abducted is absolutely terrifying.
Raiders. For sure.
Private Ryan. For sure.
The Fabelmans is a beautiful love story. With maybe the best last shot in his career!
Spielberg is the greatest director of my life and there's a few on that list to contend with!
Took me a while this time to comment but here I am. Not too monstrous but very enjoyable episode non the less. I too would have the first Indiana Jones film on top, great memories for me when I first saw this, many thanks to you guys for being so brilliant.
3. Juraissac park. 2. Duel. 1. Saving private ryan.
great show pete really enjoy the content im from glasgow so look forward to the next installment
Saving Private Ryan better be here, easily one of the best war film of all time.
It's great as a technical achievement, but I think it doesn't stand up so well as time passes....
This is my ranking from favorite to least favorite (for now)
1 - E.T. (1982)
2 - Jaws (1975)
3 - Ready Player One (2018)
4 - Indiana Jones 3 (1989)
5 - Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (1977)
6 - Munich (2005)
7 - Jurassic Park 1 (1993)
8 - Indiana Jones 4 (2008)
9 - Indiana Jones 2 (1984)
10 - Indiana Jones 1 (1981)
11 - The Fabelmans (2022)
12 - The Post (2017)
13 - Tintin (2011)
14 - The Terminal (2004)
15 - Jurassic Park 2 (1997)
16 - Hook (1991)
17 - Catch Me If You Can (2002)
18 - The BFG (2016)
19 - West Side Story (2021)
Raiders played in my home town for a year too.
Phenomenal episode lads which is almost a love letter to the divine Indiana Jones trilogy!! But Spielberg is an exceptional director I feel lucky to have grown up with his masterpieces.
The scene in Crystal skull with Shia leboeuf fencing Kate Blanchett whilst their both balancing on trucks is CGI overkill and it looks so poor and cartoony, but the immense Raiders of the lost Ark scene in 1980 when Indy is chasing the truck full of nazi’s with the Ark of the covenant in it on a horse is a million times more impressive with stuntmen and practical effects, it’s my favourite film of all I time I think with last crusade not far behind.
Later day favs :
The Terminal
Catch Me if You Can
Bridge of Spies
The BFG
Speaking of great Soundtrack Songs...South American Getaway--Butch Cassidy-The Trio-Good, Bad, Ugly-The entire Bananas score by Marvin Hamlisch-Altered States! -Riskey Business-The Warriors.
And the first episode of Columbo, although it was the second but became the first.
Super entertaining guys. Loved it and always learn. Thank you 👍💯
1. JAWS (1975) sorry, I must include it! 🦈
2. DUEL (1971) 🚛
3. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 7/16 KIND 👽
And honestly, that's about it for straight up Speilberg. I like "Jurrasic Park" all right (we went to see it several times back in '93, so you can make that one #4, and then I suppose, "Park of The Lost Gators" at #5. I liked"War Of The Worlds," save for those blasted kids. More especially the son! What an asshole.
And thats it. I mean, I LOVE JAWS and, on the small screen, DUEL very much, but, man, Speilberg movies from the 80s forward are a bit too sappy, sweet and puke-inducing for me.
Due to it's dark subject matter and serious tone, "Schindler's List" came as a serious breath of fresh air for me.
And then there's also the confusion that set in for casual fans, as to what he directed or just produced as well. I mean, I like the guy, he seems nice, and I know he adores films, but that's kinda it.
So, this kind of a lame show. Most especially because you take out JAWS at the start. I understand "why," but man, if you take out his greatest, badass film, then your left with a bunch of... kinda-sorta, family oriented pap.
🤗 🕳️🏃
I thought Spielberg movies would be to well made for Chris.
You can always tell when he's going to skip a topic.
No breasts!
Duel
Close encounters of the 3rd kind
Raiders
He's to hard to narrow
Too many HM's to memtion
Took till Davey but thankfully someone called Spielberg out for the sappy BS.😅
3. Jurassic Park
2. ET
1. Raiders
The Color Purple and Schindler’s List are his two greatest films
He has made heaps of great movies, but nothing beat Duel (1971)
🚗🚚😱👍🏻
@@ashleygeisler1003 I get jokes
Jamie, you are 100% wrong about Crystal Skull, lol. There's no redeeming quality in that movie.
Great show. No Schindler's List, anyone?
1. Jaws
2. Schindler's List
3. Munich
4. West Side Story (you are a philistine, Jamie 😜 )
5. Catch Me If You Can
6. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. The Last Crusade
9. E.T
10. Empire of the Sun
One of my favorite Spielberg films is a made for TV movie from 1972 "Something Evil". Atmospheric and creepy possession story.
I'm a little shocked as well. I thought Chris wouldn't pick Saving Private Ryan. Great episode everyone.
Jaws
Close Encounters
E.T.
Raiders
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
With a wink to Alo, I'm pulling a Katino and choosing Poltergeist.
I almost did as an honorable mention.
I’m a political junkie and I have watched every moment of the DNC national convention, but I’m turning away tonight because The Monsters Den is on.
I have my priorities…
Could you gents do a ranking of the six jurassic park movies?? Now that you mentioned them a little. Thanks!
Little correction, Davy. Harrison Ford was Spielberg's original choice to play Indiana Jones. It was George Lucas who objected because he wanted him to be seen as Han Solo.
Duel
Saving Private Ryan
Jaws
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Raiders of the Lost Ark etc. etc.
Shout out to AI, very underrated film.
I think AI has aged gracefully. Truly amazing experience. The epilogue left a bit of a sour taste when I first saw it but I love it now.
Schindlersr List & Jaws is all... 😅
1. Indiana Jones (1981-2008) my favorite movie franchise of all time.
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Schindler’s List
4. Munich
5. Lincoln
Schindlers List, Duel, Jurassic Park
1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Duel
3. Lincoln
Excepting Jaws, my top three are:
1. Temple of Doom. Criminally underrated and criminally misunderstood.
2. 1941. I love this movie and I think it's hilarious.
3. Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World. The best film in the series.
Raiders and Last Crusade would be 4 and 5, ET would be 6. Jaws would be #1 if it were included.
1. Jaws
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
4. Poltergeist
5. 1941
So interesting how we can experience movies så different,.I did not like The fabelmans that much especially not that last 10 min i thought it was a so corny ending!😂 Agree with Jurassic Park and E.T thoe!
My top three
Raiders of the lost Ark
Saving Private Ryan
Schindler’s list
Good picks apart from IMHO War of the Worlds first it should be The War of the Worlds the aliens where buried underground the annoying child the son goes over the hill to certain death then next time you see him he’s with his mum all nice and clean. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I wasn’t a big fan of the book and Jeff Wayne’s musical version. Granted if you don’t have a history with the story it’s a entertaining film.
Are you guys going to review the new planet of the apes or alien?
The only Spielberg-directed movies I like are Hook (childhood nostalgia, probably), The Terminal, and I think AI is his masterpiece. There, I said it. Haven't seen the Fablemans yet, though. I HOPE it's good. Ha.
Haven't seen Sugarland Express either. Hope that one's good too.
Without Jaws, mine are:
1. Jurassic Park (changed my childhood)
2. E.T. (started my childhood)
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Where's the romulus reviews??? 😂❤
Hey, you should have done the Tarantino ranking first, way less movies to get through 😉 I will sit tight though and continue to wait patiently.
"Gunga Din" was another big influence on Indiana Jones, particularly "Temple of Doom," where they lifted a few plot points and scenes directly. Good fun with a typically wacky Cary Grant.
I'd go with "The Terminal" for his worst movie. Utter garbage.
I can't watch the ending of "Schindler's List" anymore without thinking of the Judge Reinhold farewell in that "Seinfeld" episode. "I could've done more!" 🤣
Movies that are not Jaws:
Saving Private Ryan
Jurassic Park
Catch Me If You Can
1 Jurassic Park (1993)
2 Jaws (1975)
3 Ready Player One (2018)
4 Minority Report (2002)
5 Schindler's List (1993)
Saving Private Ryan doesn’t really have a plot. It’s just a bunch of wandering around looking for someone. (Sorry! Don’t burn my house down!)
DeCaprio good in Catch me if You Can and Django Unchained only. The rest is blah to me.
Bit predictable but Jaws and Raiders are the ones i love the most.
While I enjoy Jurassic Park, I'm surprised it's still such a classic...there are so many continuity issues and subtle mistakes throughout the whole movie
The Lost World the worst Jurassic Park movie? Literally the most insane take I've ever heard! I love that movie, hahah.. I find the third one way worse, and the Jurassic World movies are sadly all utter trash
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
FrankAbagnale April 27,1948 catch me if you can booksmovie
I genuinely believe A.I. is his best film. I find it fascinating, hypnotic, and moving. The blend of Spielberg's sensibilities with Stanley Kubrick's results in such a unique aura. And what a performance by Jude Law.
Its (I think) the only Spielberg movie I haven't seen!😂😂
Got fix that.
I will rate his movies out of the many times I've seen them.
1. E.T.
2. Temple of Doom
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Jurassic Park
5. Epire of the Sun
6. A.I.
7. Always
8. Sugarland Express
9. Saving Privat Ryan (really got his humor going)
10. Shindlers List (Couldn't stop laughing)
11. Encounters of the Third Kind
12. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
13. The Duel
Thee rest I've only seen once or not at all.
1. E.T.
2. Jurassic Park
3. Minority Report
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. E.T.: The Extraterrestrial
3. 1941
Saving Private Ryan
Catch Me If You Can
Schindlers List
war of the worlds (2005) is vastly rewatcheable.
Schindler´s List
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Empire of the Sun
I really enjoyed War of the Worlds until the last scene where you find out the son survived. Ruined the whole movie with a schmaltzy audience pandering ending.
india jones isnt very good but as the wonderful leonard maltin once said there id be no pirates of the carabinniaen without out india jones so in the end im very greatful for india jones i suppose
The Pirates films are more like the 4th and 5th Indy films. Crap.
The bible stories are real
😂
God’s the best!
Duel was well shot. But i found it very slow and boring. And i didn’t like the ending at all. Both artsy and fartsy
My favorite Steven Spielberg movies are Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park 1 and 2, Ready Player One and ET.
Schindler's List would be my number one. And certainly,Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom is much better than the first film. It is pretty much a horror movie it is creepy, gory, dark, and I had a crush on Kate Capshaw when I was a teen.
