Beliefs Fall Away on Their Own

  • A man asks Rupert for advice on letting go of old, limiting beliefs. What can he do to purify the mind and align his thinking with the non-dual understanding?
Rupert says: ‘Some religious and spiritual paths are conceived and formulated in terms of a journey, a progression or purification process by which the individual slowly approaches God or the absolute. However, here we don't take that point of view. We go directly to that which we essentially are, and we start with that - we don’t end with it. There is a kind of purification of the mind and the body, but it takes place after this recognition, not before.
‘But don’t try to let go of these old beliefs - they will let go of you. Just keep exploring this understanding in whatever way you feel moved to do. The way you think, feel, act and relate will be upgraded and realigned - not as a result of your doing but as an inevitable consequence of your understanding.’

Lastly, can you judge a person level of happiness and fulfilment by looking at them at these 'meetings'?

There is no such person who is happy and fulfilled in the long term, though. Moments, yes. The world will always, one way or another, cause frustration and resistance in a person whose consciousness is completely identified with one's mind, emotions and thoughts. In stead of being present, and seeing everything unfolding, as not any potential survival threat to the illusion of the separate individual.

When abiding in "I am", I often find myself recognizing the presence behind the seprate self. However, amidst the total indulgence in outer experiences - sensory or mental - where does this presence reside? Is it the same essence that accompanies me in deep sleep? Should I embrace it as my true self? If so, how can I embody it in the waking state?
Is Turya, the awareness, the fundamental knowingness, the primary existence? Or does something transcend even this, an absolute state beyond knowingness, a realm of pure being?
Reflecting on my meditative journey, I've noticed that dwelling in the sensation of "I am" eventually leads me to a state of pristine emptiness. Is this due to the absence of awareness, or rather the cessation of the mind's chatter, allowing the pure essence of awareness to shine unobscured?
And amidst these contemplations, another question arises: Who is the seeker of truth? Is it the individual, the combination of body and mind, realizing its ultimate nature as nothingness?
These inquiries have been incessantly occupying my thoughts, and I yearn to engage with fellow meditators in consideringg their mysteries.

There is only knowing, knowing knowing. The separate self is a thought which is made out of knowing and known by knowing. The best thing I can say about ourself is that we are prior to silence 🙏

It's very easy to confuse this, mental activity with the essence, conscious awareness. While mental activity originate from the essence, it isn't this pure essence that mental activity reffers to. It's a bit confusing because in the end it's all that essence, the being. In deep sleep the essence retrieves the attention from mental activity. Only from the mental activity. Otherwise your heart would stop. It doesn't. In the morning with the opening of eyes the essence returns its attention back to mind

There are some good observation's and questions, I can try to provide some clarification. The Presence that you are referring to doesn't have a specific location or is an essence or thing, it simply is. It and one's Self nature are the same thing. Deep sleep is useful pointer to this, as it is often characterized by the absence of mental activity, feeling like nothingness or absence. This absence cannot really be described as being anywhere, but the absence of location, and everything else for that matter. So, basically it is absence of everything but absence itself.
Turyia is the state to describe Being and Consciousness or Sat-Chit, it is the experience of cognition without cognition. This experience is awareness without the mechanisms of mind that "knows" or "recognize" objects in a dualistic sense. We can also describe it as a state of non-conceptual awareness, where consciousness is present but not actively interpreting or interacting with the contents of perception through the mind's cognitive functions.
This is also why Turiya is called Waking Sleeping, because it is a combination of the waking state where the cognitive functions of the mind is active, but also deep sleep where there is an absence of identification. So, though the mind is working, there is no feeling of identification with it, one feels as if one is there as Self or presence but also not engaging with feeling, senses and perception. They of course will happen but there is no attachment or identification to them.
You are always this Presence or Self, the only thing that is required is to cease the aspect of the Mind that creates identification. This aspect of the mind is called Ahmkara or I-maker, and it creates a sense of identification with the 5 senses. So, though you are always there as Self or Presence, the sense of this identification creates an illusion of a Conscious subject engaging with the senses, so we feel as if we are the eyes, ears, body etc.
The best practice is just to remain still and silent, abiding in the sense of 'I am.' Don’t actively search for or do anything; just be silent, an still like the sense of absence in deep sleep. This is to help halt the mind's activities, especially those generating identification and self-referential thinking. You can gauge your progress by the absence of thoughts. There's no need to forcefully block thoughts; instead, refocus your attention on the Self and let its inherent silence quiet the mind. The longer you can remain without thoughts, the more there is inner silence, once this has become effortless and permanent the Ahamkara will fall away.
The seeker of truth is the individual, a combination of Consciousness and Mind. In reality, it is primarily the Mind-body mechanism working to reverse its conditioning, returning to a more natural state. The Ego is like a knot that the mind has entangled itself in through its natural process of generating perception, sensations etc. So, the mind works to untangle this knot to go back to a more natural state. Though, these are all mechanical and biological process, there is an underlying current or force that moves the mind to do this. We often refer to it as Grace.
Because presence or Self is always there, there seems to be a Conscious individual who is going through seeking and Self-realization, but ultimately, consciousness is only there to provide the light or backdrop for this play of the mind to happen. So, Seeking and realization is only ever in the Mind, as it strictly the activity of the mind. Because we are already Self, there is no need to become it or realize it, the issue only lies in the Mind, and the Mind is like a mirror, it is the Self-reflecting tool of The Self. When it is silent one's nature is easily seen, when it is distorted ones nature seems to be obscured.

Sorry, but I know of several quite advanced teachers, who say that there’s sometimes needs to be some conscious attention on very deep beliefs that continue to affect them even when the identification is quite profound. It’s a nice comforting story to think that it’s all going to happen unconsciously. at the same time, it’s probably all unfolding in the best possible way.

I'm sorry, but in this instance Rupert totally missed the heart of the
    question and tragically
left the deepest need of this earnest gentleman entirely unrecognized and unmet. I have great respect and appreciation for Rupert's keen insights and his eloquence. Much of what he shares does indeed help nourish clarity and understanding. However, there is yet a very strong propensity of the intellect (in both Rupert and Frances, and in myself and in many of us) to take
a question into its own court, and focus on the words, and expound via explanations of the meanings of words.
With all due respect, Rupert does often listen deeply enough to hear what's alive at of the heart of a question, and responds at that level, which is very
beautiful. In this situation, however, that blessed opportunity was missed.
The gentleman, at the very outset, shared his experience of the seamless continuity of awareness that has been present with him throughout all time, events, experiences. All he needed to hear back was confirnation of THAT, recognition of THAT,
    and reassurance that it
is THAT ever-present awareness that is the very
essence of his Self and of
us all. That was what he needed to hear from Rupert. That was all he needed to hear, to gladden his heart and meet his need for understanding --
    not frickin explanations.

Genuine Near Death Experience research and Past Life research strongly suggest that an element of "personal" conscious being may indeed continue beyond death, possibly incarnated a second time, such as with children retaining clear memories of a former life (then objectively verified or dismissed), often one which suddenly ended at a young age. Clear memories of the child's previous traumatic death, often with a birthmark on the body area which ended their previous life, make this research even more compelling. This, however, is not necessarily inconsistent with the journey of realization of one's true nature of the absolute. This reminds me of the concept of the Wheel of Samsara, rebirth until ultimate realization. I find it useful to consider all of the salient data regarding the nature of life, death, and Being, while stopping short of 'concluding' with a belief system which, of course, merely becomes another obstacle to direct consciousness.

means to be written off as fantasy and wish fulfillment and may
be regarded as evidence supporting a belief in reincarnation. There
are, however, some cases in the University of Virginia collection that
suggest that their interpretation is not as straight forward as our common
conceptions of reincarnation would suggest. For example, in some
cases, researchers have investigated two or more children who recall
the same past life (Keil, 2010).”

That's a common experience for most
of us when we feel shaken, startled, flustered, frozen
      (i.e. frightened, terrified
confused), however different the triggering situation might be for each of us. Fear comes
      Rage comes. Frustration comes. Restlessness....
It's sometimes not that helpful to keep hearing
      very peaceful beings
remind us that these energy forms belong to the nonexistent separate self. Sometimes, what's most helpful to receive is confirmation that what you're experiencing is the same for us all -- that very uncomfortable incongruence between
the quality of peaceful presence and responsiveness that we so love and long to 'embody' and express
      (the ideal)
and the actuality of the barbed wire harshness od our present subjective experience.
It's quite OK, my friend. Smile at it. Lay no judgment upon anything you notice...And Peace will come to abide in your dwelling.🙏🏻
