I’m 66 and believe you - I don’t know your music - the hell with the haters! Love seeing people’s first reactions! This was the height of the Vietnam war protests and this is one of the greatest protest songs.
The female vocalist Merry Clayton was asked to sing for them, it was late at night, she got out bed went to studio in her hair curlers, nailed it in 2 takes, 2nd take she gave her all, her voice broke, it was such a great vocal they kept it in the track
55 years after its original release its impact and relevance has not been lost. Every aspect of the performance is perfection: Keith Richard's opening guitar riff, Charlie Watts driving it relentlessly along on the drums, Merry Claytons soul-shaking vocal plus the percussion, harmonica, and piano parts. This is a masterclass in how to make a record that stands the test of time.
I dont know what it is that gives one so much pleasure seeing other people have fun, butyour reaction was worth every note. good luck to your channel. ill be tuning again for sure.
Music is a lot more than just taste. Music you grew up with will always be better than newer music because it's the memory you connect with. So although I get what you are saying. There are some rap songs which will blow your mind
@@timbodude2009 absolutely. That is why I will never talk about someone's music taste. Everything is relative, music is the only thing you can truly enjoy in this life
Was hitch-hiking in Oregon 1971 or 72 and got picked up by a couple who let me crash at their apartment on the couch. They put this album on and went to bed. It started scratching at Just a shot away and every time I got up to turn it off the dogs growled. So I laid there all night listening to just a shot away...scratch...just a shot away. Been enough years now that I like the song again
There's a great video on UA-cam called "Naked voice from Merry Clayton in Gimme Shelter" about the woman singing on this song. Her isolated vocals are spell binding. She knocks it out of the park.
Give me Shelter was written during The Vietnam War during a lot of social unrest. It was a very powerful song that was played at Altamont where a black man was murdered by a Hells Angel in 69. It happened right in front of the stage where the Stones were performing. It signaled the end of the sixties and lost innocence. To this day, the hair on the back of my neck stands up with all the memories it brings. Glad to see a new generation discovering the Stones at their peak.
Great reaction, the Stones are one of the greatest ever, check these out: "The Last Time", "Ruby Tuesday", "She's a Rainbow", "Paint it Black", "Beast of Burden", so many hits.
🇨🇦 In those days our music was FUN and HAPPY and LAIDBACK ! In this day and age, it's all about getting attention and out shouting the competition ! There is no originality or imagination in today's so-called music ! There is no Soul !
I enjoyed your reaction. Just subscribed. Its fine you hadnt heard of Rolling Stones before. Not just because you come from another country. Also because this song is from before when I was born and I am more than twice your age. Your unfamiliarity with some American and British classics will actually make your reactions more pure and more enjoyable to watch
Thank you. I'm just idk when I read the comments from people saying that I live under a rock if I didn't hear it before i'm like. There is a whole culture they don't know about. It's defensive but you are Right. That is the reason why I started this channel. To lean about music
Someone here commented, 'So much wisdom condensed into your 25 years!'. I thought you were older young man. I got socks and ties older than you...!! LOL I have two sons 27 and 29 and I'll be 63 shortly. Love your genuine love and reaction for great music young man. Peace and a very Blessed 2024 from the SF Bay Area, Cali.
Merry Clayton sang this song last minute literally in her bathrobe and hair curlers as a favor to Mick who was desperate to have her sing this vocal backup. She DESTROYED IT!! This song is now one of thee ALL TIME GOAT ROCK SONGS EVER!!!
Man no worries bout ppl sayin they dont believe you...there are MANY freakin reasons i can think of as to why someone would NOT hear certain songs & or artists thru out their lives smh so yea just go with YOUR flow & enjoy the music! that is ALL that matters **Peace** **RockON!!!**
Great reaction to a great song. Hope you react to more, the ones below are all good. I think you would like Sympathy for the Devil. Don’t worry about the naysayers, believe me they cannot find Suriname on a map 😂 really enjoyed the reaction
Yes, this is a Rolling Stones song, but it belongs to Merry Clayton. It would be a great song, regardless, but it is spellbinding with her vocals. RIP Merry. ❤
@@dodahlberg oh gosh, I heard she had passed away. I do know that she was in a car accident and lost both of her legs. Either way, Merry Clayton made Gimme Shelter the extraordinary song it is.
It's wild to know she almost turned it down because she had no interest in the stones. I am grateful she ultimately listens to her friends telling her to do it because she MADE this song
@@nanook8721I heard her interviewed on NPR last year because a book came out detailing the background singers who turned somewhat good songs into masterpieces. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the book

The Stones have done tours to South America so they do have a lot of fans there. Their music has been featured in so many films you may have heard them but not realized
Dude, being from South America is no excuse, at all. Just google ‘Rollinga’ from Argentina, it’s a well established, large neighborhood and they LIVE, EAT and BREATHE The Rolling Stones. There are similar communities elsewhere.
No matter how you approach this song, it's powerful.

So glad I was fortunate enough to grow up with this music !
The female vocalist Merry Clayton was asked to sing for them, it was late at night, she got out bed went to studio in her hair curlers, nailed it in 2 takes, 2nd take she gave her all, her voice broke, it was such a great vocal they kept it in the track
She later said that when listening to the song, she couldn't believe it was her. In a good way, of course.
Unfortunately,Merry lost her four -month pregnancy the next day.
Merry Clayton - yeah baby

No one's ever wrote that before.
In 2006 The Stones played to 1.5 million people on the beach in Rio. Check it out .
This song was VERY popular with the troops in Vietnam.
A protest song against the war...any war.
A real powerhouse of a song. It was revolutionary music for it's time.

Moves Like Jagger was performed by Adam Levine and his band Maroon Five.
It’s the Blues man.
Hey! None of us was born knowing this stuff. You’re fine.
If you like this one you should also react to "Sympathy For The Devil" It's another Rolling Stones classic.
Merry Clayton was 9 mos pregnant at the time. She lost the baby. Some blame this. 😢
