Braid is my go to line It's only issue I found is casting a heavy load with a spinning reel. No I don't use a casting aid expect for a little hockey tape on the finger. Cool vid!!
Ah ok yes I started to use that cannon by breakaway tackle and its awesome I don't have to mess with the drag that I already have set and can cast heavy as I want weight

hey Captain, interestin'! I personally didn't found too big of a difference between solid and hollow in this matter, always fished solid and was just fine, I mean I had the feel gettin' better results with the hollow but both worked and I've done some crazy stuff with straight solid braid, like pullin' big eels outta caves AFTER they vanished into them and the line was rubbin' against the rocks the whole time, had a big catfish run through dead, sunken trees, havin' my whole line(almost spooled me) run through two trees, one even bigger than me wrapped the line around a sunken stamp and the 30-40lb line(an VERY durable small diameter braid made by SROFT, the GTP S7), dived down, pulled the stamp up, then had the fish with hooks in layin' on my feet, untangled the line, went away with the stamp, then dropped it, took the rod from my mom i had holdin' it while I went in the water and contiuned fightin' the fish...
Very nice and yes sir seen all kinds of braids work but overall performance for our areas of fishing we def had to step up to getting our hollow core game up especially when it came down to long term life of the line and cost of maintaining...
@@TeamHardLife what solid braids where you fishin' btw? cause the JB hollow is already one of the best braids, regardless if hollow or solid you'll find, JB solid not so much from all I heard. the best solid braid I've fished is Momoi Ryujin, sunline Monster is supposed to be similar if not better but didn't test it myself so far. STROFT makes good braid too but I had issueswith some sizes I didn't have with the Ryujin which is the hardiest solid braid I ever used, STROFT is super abraision resistant but the Ryujin outperforms it in all around performance like shock resistance and keepin' it's qualities over an longer shelflive, new STROFT braid is great but it wears down like most braids relatively quickly when fished hard, while the Ryujin holds up way better.
For solid braids it was Spider wire, p-line, Cortland Master Braid

From shore or boat?
Personally I have several reels set up with straight braid and some with mono top shot. Reason for me running more mono on reels is that it helps prevent cut offs when the surf is flat and calm. Rather than straight braid it’s an instant cut off. When the current is ripping out in the surf straight 130lb hollow core braid is king because it doesn’t drift as bad if deployed into wind direction.. Therefore, people all have there personal preference on what they like using. That’s a reason why on half of my reels I run straight braid and on the other half I run so much of braid and a good 300-400 yard top shot of mono. This past weekend I had one reel with all 300 yards of mono in water and and all the braid stayed on reel then the other two reels had straight braid they got cut off luckily I was running floats… Thank you Albert for sharing your knowledge buddy…
Did you have any frays or nicks in your mono when you got it in?
Just a few. But if I had ran straight braid I knew it would have been an instant cut off…

Ive been researching this for the last few days....and you even answered my question in another video supporting that you are running hollow core braid with no mono topshots. You discussed the abrasion issue, but I didnt hear you hit upon the effect of mono to stretch and provide some shock absorber. Do you change your hook set techniques or anything else when running the straight Hollow core? Ive got my three 6/0 wide senators that I may be respooling for a spring trip to PINS. Maybe I need to give ya a call and see what it would cost to get them respooled using the all Hollow Core option. Thanks for this informative video!!
Yes sir calling will definitely make it easier... and yes we stopped using mono tops shots and have more hook ups cause the sensitivity has also increased.. also I see your thumbnail are you in the service or a vet?

hey captain, I just thought about your underwater video, ever heard of the technique usin' a breakaway weight and ettachin' the breakline to the BAIT, not the hook? this way your line will just go limp if the bait is gone and thankls to the way it's rigged tangles are impossible, since every single part of the rig is under tension, no lose leader to tangle.
another thing: have you ever heard about U-floats? it's extremely common over here for catfish, basically you have your leader , normally held to the bottom by a breakaway weight, breakline eithere attached to the swivel, or to the main line/snag leader by wrappin' the braid 3-4 times around your finger, go through it with the brealkine, do a uni and you have a connection you can easily reel in, to do this when sharkin' I'd make sure to have some extra heavy hollow on the first yards, so I don't damage anythin', the beauty of this method is that you can attaxh the weight anywhere on the line, as far or close to the bait as you want. no to the actual U-float: it's just a streamlined fload placed on the leader close to the bait, while for catfish it's only 1-5 inches away from the bait and get's inhaled with it, for shark I'd go with 6-8 feet so it doesn't get's bitten and causes the fish to spit the bait. the thing about U-floats is, you have your line fixed on the bottom, but you can fish it anywhere in the water collum. anothere way when sharkin' would be to attach a breakline with a balon to the bait and keep it off the bottom that way.
Yes havw heard of breakaway weights systems.. but don't like them cause if the shark happens to drop the bait it will continue to drift with the current... and for us we have seen where the initial hook up isn't always 100% so the weight resets and they tend to come back and hit the bait and then get hooked up.. so we like our surf weights to always want to re-stick ..
@@TeamHardLife good point! still an option to use a lighter breakline and a smaller breakaway to keep tangles from happenin' but with the amount of rods you bring out I see that it might not be practical. one thing I see it that the spider weights actually help to get the line back onto the reel tight. of course only works where you don't have snaggy/rocky bottom.

@drop stix ever tried the PR? the best way to connect braid to the terminal tackle short of a splice, at least for casting, is a PR to mono and then an 5-7 wrap uni to the swivel, make sure the wraps of the uni are evenly layed one by one, not some weird srunched up stuff, it should look like the barrel wraps on a haywire, done the right way it works even on 700lb mono. this is for normal fishin', for big game use a Assie plait with a thimle for the mono to swivel and a solid to hollow splice, then mono to hollow, or if you have to do it on a boat ore somethin' an Bimini to an wind on with loop to loop. but loop to loop is an weakpoint when it goes through the line over and over and no bimini can keep up with a good splice, solid splicin' (sawin') is still stronger, just make sure to hit the center every time, but hollow splices are faster and strnger.an bimini and then an FG or GT knot with the double line is another option to use a knot, or do an bimini to the swivel directly, still more around 75% line strength but you don't always need 100%, like when usin' light leaders or small hooks for example.
@drop stix I created a line to line version of the aussie plait, as well as a terminal knot, no loops needed! with mono it's very close to a splice and sometimes the better choice cause then the finish of the splice get's frayed off the splice is useless and for the terminal connection you usually don't wanna have braid cause you're usin' mono for a reason... for braid with the lines I tested the Bimini actually beat the plait but every braid has different knot strengths AND works different with every knot... The problem when splicing hollow to solid and mono is that whatever you use for the finish, it can get frayed offrunnin' over the edge or simply through the guides too many times in a long fight.
Of course you can always try my way and go straight hollowcore, but where you'd use a mono topshot I splice in hollow the size of the mono you'd normally use, so instead of runnin' 70-100lb mono I go 200lb braid, instead of 130lb-150lb mono I go 300lb braid for the Topshot, or individually for the fishin' conditions, sometimes I go only a bit heavier than my mainline, sometimes several times heavier, just make sure to taper the end of the thicker hollow and use a middle peace that's between both sizes, sometimes multiple middel peaces, to get an even connection and not damage your mainline with braid that's three times as heavy and the equivalent needles...
also that way you don't need to worry to much when doin' the terminal connection, I do a 7-12 wrap uni for lighter stuff or when usin' topshot's several times as heavy as my mainline, when the difference is smaller, i fish line that's relatively light or I'm goin' after fish that can put out a long fight I always do an splice as the terminal connection.
whenever I'm forced to use Mono as a wind on I either do an PR or a splice with two finishing knot's, when it's a non casted connection I actually put a second layer of halfhitches over the first one, makes it bulkier, but increases the lifespan. when usin' braid that't way stronger than the used mono an FG is actually better than a PR cause you can damage the mono when usin' too much pressure, while th eloss in strenth on the braid doesn't matter in this case, another option you have with a mono leader is to take mono slightly weaker than the mainline and do a PR/Splice to the braid, but a simple terminal connection, to create a weakpoint, good idea in snaggy areas. when no mono is needed but I still want a weakpoint I like to use a piece of 1x7 titanium, for heavy fishin'(over 130lb line) I just tie a short piece of Mono between two svivels, than the actual leader, but this is only for when it's needed and I can afford to sacrifice a bit of strenth. another way for lure fishin' is to use hooks that can bent out(when usin' small hardbaits sometimes there's no way around it anyway, but hooks can always bent when in a bad angle, so I prefere to have a less critical weakpoint.

Great info man! One question though, when you were talking about casting and impressed how far it does cast, you were talking about braided line, but were you referring to the hollow core braid? If that was the case, I'll change to the hollow core on my casting reels. I also want to put the hollow core line on my Avet 50W. Right now I have 80# test all the way. I'll switch it to hollow core all the way I think.

That's what we used to use about 6-8 years ago. Now we run straight hollow core braid.
That 9/0 you can run mix braid 80# backing and top shot with 130# in 2 colors so you know when your in your top shot and still give you great line capacity

sharks pull drag then pop. fish bite it clean or when you come tight to reel in it pops. My diamond hollow gets sand/shells in it.
How can it get inside if the line is tight?

Ya that diamond braid didn't see it float the way the Cortland hollow core braid did.. I wonder if that is also a big reason for that..

I don't need mono topshots either, when I need abraision resistance I use braid that's about the same diameter as mono others would use as topshot'd be. I've got proven time and time again that braid the same SIZE(diameter/capacity wise, NOT breakin' strength) holds up better in real life use, when your line is through it's through but when the mono is through half way it'll pop, when the thick braid is through half way it's still strong enough to support all the load you could put on same size mono since we're talkin' about braid three times the breakin' strength. just think about it. I've even handlined heaps of fish on eye sight I had to pull out of rocks, I saw them take the bait and pull under a rock, it was always the same, the supposed to be more abraision resistant mono, which was high quality STROFT GTM, popped a few times while same diameter/capacity givin' braid always held up just fine. at the end of the day we care about how much line we fit on our reel, how far we cast, how much water resistance it gives, etc. and at the end of the day it needs to stand against the pressure we put on it, even when damaged, but no one(except the imo redicilous IGFA record chasers) should care about at what pressure they're line breaks in a labor assembly, lines have to be compared by size, not strength! fact is quality braid wins in all categories when we actually compare braid and mono in sizes that'd fill a reel with the same yardage, actually we can fish thinner line and still be on the save side when half or the line is cut/frayed through, since same size mono would be at about the same strength as our damaged braid, I've fished mono and braid in similar sizes, mono a bit thicker and even though I fished the braid much more I only had weird cut-offs on the mono.
