My best advice when making games is to not create things but create systems that lets you generate things quickly; sometimes this is standardized ore generation or making 1000 swords out of 30 different assets, other times it's systems like a pathing system that taps into splines defined by the landscape with interrupt/interact/modifier actors for more advanced movements. Sometimes it's actually even better to spend some money in order to get the systems you want to use but are unsure of how to create yourself without wasting months learning how to, like who wants to create an advanced water system from scratch anyway?

    • @apoxfox
      @apoxfox  8 місяців тому +4

That's great advice! I totally agree with the sentiment about using prebuilt systems. Sometimes I get so lost in making a system by myself

I agree to this absolutely. Although it might be unfit for beginners and some intermediates. But of course, I'm biased because it is my personal path and principle.

an actual very helpful video, no respect to other channels but i when i listen to them even with good advices i always left and forget eveything they said like a procrastination tool, but with this one i feel like i actually learned a lot... like moodboard and how its okay to be inspired heavily by other works and ur ideas for how to use moodboard is very suitable to me, i appreciate it a lot man.

Let's be frank, it's our fault that we didn't solidify what we _gathered,_ not the videos'. And not learned, gathered. Only after effective reflection and recalls will it be true learning.

Have you made any games yet? I’m 14 and my friends and I have participated in 5 game jams this year, finishing prototypes for each one. You can do this too! It’s a great way to get started if you haven’t already. If you have, I’d love to see what you’ve made.

If you plan for 2 weeks, and that is the amount of time you think it is actually take to complete, I can tell you right now the actual amount of time it will take to complete is: 6 weeks and 2 days.
If you're skilled enough to know how long something 'should take', take that amount of time and multiply it by PI. Works every time. Ideally, you actually break down the tasks and measure by the quarter hour how long you think each will take, ... this will give you the best result.
You're welcome for this two decades worth of freelance experience for free... hasn't let me down yet.
For a 1 month project, you actually would want to choose something that you know you could finish completely in roughly 10 days. So the 14 day estimate wasn't too far off, but you would be about 2 weeks overbudget ;P

you need to STEAL ideas, not because original ideas are impossible (they very much ARE possible), but because the public at large don't actually want original ideas.
Look at the amount of money sequels and existing franchises make... people by and large are dumb and want dumb things... so you need to take things that they already know about and are comfortable with, repackage them slightly and add one or two neat new things to make it your own.
I think it's important to make both 'popular' games but also make room for actual new and innovative art projects that are less than comfortable... or at least that's what I do...

bleh... ideas are super easy to come up with... I have a dozen good game ideas each time I use the loo.
The thing that's actually hard is: execution and planning.
If ideas are so hard, I'll swap you, and you can be the programmer and I'll collect the checks for my portion of the work by saying a single cool game idea.

platformers are a tough go, financially, they are one of the easiest things to make. and if you look at steam statistics. they are in low demand, and high surplus. which, makes it very hard to be "successful" financially with them. just FYI.

I can say with confidence that for every hour I spend coding I can spend another hour debugging, and two hours creating assets XD
...and that's before I begin a proper art pass to pretty things up!
