What I have discovered in my spiritual endeavors is that you can restrain yourself from consenting to all unlawful passions, ONLY if you have true Love for our Lord. If you have fear of hell or the fear of loss of Heaven, you might go a great distance, but it's ONLY the love of our Lord that would take you to the final destination - Heaven. One more point, no matter how many sermons we hear, how much ever they are effective, the sufferings of restraining ourselves to yielding to temptations is purely ours. We must undergo the pains of resisting the temptations. This is the only way, God can test us and make us better. It is for our own good and we must fight boldly and with the help of the Grace we receive from Him. God allows the devil to tempt us, God allows us to be tempted to the degree of our capacity, God gives us the Graces to fight these temptations, and God finally rewards us if we succeed and punishes if we fail. So, he's the source and he's the means and he's the ends of all of it.

Yup. But fear is an important first step for a lot/most people. Gotta use whatever tools are at your disposal.

This is great info, but boy, I’ll have to come back with a pen and paper and my finger on the pause button because this is way too dense of content to relay purely audibly without any visual aides.

Jeff, you must be a visual learner like me. I need outlines, graphs, etc to remember info later. I can read a book once & remember the specific info, but I can listen to a book or lecture numerous times & never remember specific names or dates & sometimes I even struggle to remember the ideas. I suffer from a chronic illness & am constantly in pain, sometimes it keeps me from doing anything besides lying down. The doctor said physical pain does make it harder to comprehend & remember things, & I do know I struggle more than I used to, but I have always had trouble remembering things if I don't write them down or have visual aids & so does some relatives on my Dad's side of the family. I know it's classified as a learning style, but It's such a struggle for me & some relatives that I believe it may be more of a yet undiscovered learning disability us & probably many others. I have tried to overcome the problem but nothing works. I wish I could overcome it as it would make me feel like my time being sick is being put to more productive use when I'm unable to do anything buy lie down & listen, not watch, to talks or documentaries.
I'm still so thankful for all the sermons & great content that's available to me. Without this illness, I wouldnt have learned the history & truth of the Catholic Church. In fact, the practice of Redemptive Sufferring saved my life. The new age nonsense that you can manifest your health & destiny is so destructive & dangerous to the disabled & chronically ill because it makes disease and suffering your fault & makes you think you're just not trying hard enough to be cured. It led to years of anguish for me & almost led me to suicide multiple times. I wish all Catholics would share Redemptive Suffering with the world. To know that I have purpose & can serve mankind by offering up my suffering & praying for others, has completely changed my attitude & emotions & given me peace & joy instead of the frustration, rage, & worthlessness I was experiencing. God bless all these great Catholics online!

Thank you so much, a very sensible homily. Everything indeed starts with God but it is ourselves that decides if we want to love and follow Him, our emotions play a great role and purifying our emotions is essential. God bless you!

Following the flesh makes one fall into hell. We give up things of this world to discipline the body, have the soul control the body and to be presentable to God. I don’t think God wants us to be undisciplined. We must remember a good man walks by faith not by sight.
Thank you Father for the talk.

While stoics are a step-up from the debauchery of modern man, they certainly fall short of directing the means to the right end. At the same time, they are not far from the kingdom of heaven and I try to read some stoics to pick out the practical advice. I.e., Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. But ultimately we should read the Saints.

If Marcus Aurelius were a devout Catholic his Meditations book might have read more differently as he would have been under constant attack by evil as Marcus would have been trying to clean his mind and soul for God.
