    The thing with Heimerdinger is his inability to relate to everyone around him with shorter lifespan. He has knowledge of the past that allows him to navigate the future. He has correct worries about the future. But he is completely oblivious to the present. He is halting everything to make sure a future in 100 years gets better but he does nothing about the present. Jayce's accusations were correct about Heimerdinger being to passive to do anything.
    Very well written complexity and flaw of his character

      though I love the show for also that jayce and victor are also naive in their speed of progress and not thinking about the long-term and risks that come with science, like jayce making gauntlets to allow workers to work harder, however they do not improve the life of the worker it just makes more productive, and they can easily be used as highly deadly weapons, and if the wrong person gets a hold of one of those gems...

      Heim is one of the rare times where a character who lives for 100's of years actually affects his writing. A lot of time I feel like it's added as a cool thing but the writers don't really do anything with it.

      @@chongwillson972 Yep, Heimerdinger is correct about how dangerous Hextech and the proliferation of it would be. The thing that Jayce is correct about is that the circumstances have deteriorated heavily in spite of Heimer's stewardship, basically Heimer have been in charge for ages, but the inequality and later radicalisation of the undercity still happened with Heimer seemingly having no solutions to the problems.

      @@chongwillson972 The gauntlets would improve workers lives though, anything that takes the strain off a worker improves their life, because the workers body no longer needs to bear the brunt of that work. Would you argue against the jackhammer? The computer? The shovel? Should we only claw through the dirt with our bare hands because of the risk any sort of tool poses and only improves productivity not quality of life?
      Go to your yard, dig a 1 foot deep hole with your hands, then dig a 1 foot deep hole with a shovel. Does the shovel improve the quality of your life, assuming you had to dig a thousand 1 foot holes?

    It's always interesting to see people's thoughts on the council scene. While it is clearly precipitated by the conflict involving Viktor, I do agree with everything Jayce said. Heimer is a good man, a good scientist, a good mentor, and a good source of knowledge, but he is a bad leader. He is the embodiment of fighting for the status quo. This terrible stratification of the upper and lower cities has all occurred under multiple councils, but Heimer has been on the council the whole time. He is better than the others insofar as he is not corrupt, but he has also utterly failed the undercity.

      "Fighting for the status quo" is a great way of putting it. I'm stealing that, thanks.
      The thing is, Heimerdinger's guidance is only helpful in the very specific situation of dangerous magic and/or science. Even then, he fails to balance safety with the need for change in the present moment. We never see him offer his guidance on matters of governance or on the Undercity or really anything other than research. He only resists change, never proposes it. He never says, "This thing we're doing is harmful or ineffective. We should look into other methods."

    That Doctor is the same one that worked for Silco in the first three episodes btw, the one that Jinx mentions in episode 5 when she couldn't figure out the hextech because of her PTSD, she said "just give it to the doctor".
    What I get from that scene, is that he makes shimmer from those purple flowers, and then he is injecting the very first version of shimmer in Rio, the very first shimmer mutation, patient 0. In the present it seems that he just gave up on Rio for now, and just put her in a tube while he works on something else. Doesn't seem to me that he is harvesting anything from Rio

    • @chrishaven1489
      @chrishaven1489 5 місяців тому +13

      Rio's mutation is the source of shimmer. It's more likely that Rio's physiology somehow tranforms the chemicals in the flowers into something that can be harnessed to create shimmer. It's no coincidence that a giant axolotl, a creature renowned for its regenerative capabilities, is the source of a chemical that alters physiology and has healing properties, evidenced by its use on Silco's eye, Sevika's arm, Vi's wounds and other instances of medical and surgical use throghout the show

      .. and to add info from the game lore (and the show's cast/voice credits), the doctor is referred to as "Singed" -- a name he used after being "blown up" at the end of episode 3 (when Powder's explosion races up the shimmer-vines into the doctor's lab). The lab / Rio is all green now because Singed has created (or evolved shimmer into) a new creation: ChemTech (which is used by certain characters in the game).

    • @KeitieKalopsia
      @KeitieKalopsia 22 дні тому

      Yeah, I don't think it's possible that Rio is the one transforming the plants into shimmer. There are entire shimmer factories, so it can't all come from one little axolotl.

    Before Heimerdinger discouraged Jayce from even mentioning magic because the council wouldn't like it and they didn't. He was nearly exiled because he went against Heimerdinger's advice. While Heimerdinger was hesitant, he did accept the magic once Jauce proved it could be stable.
    However, the hexcore is different. Heimerdinger is adamant against using it rather than simply advising against it. He outright said he had seen it before and it is different to be strongly against one specific thing than against a whole field of study. I do fear what the hexcore will bring about.

    One of the reasons i love this show so much is because even after multiple viewing's i still find new details about it. Vi's tatoo on her cheek could mean her name and also stands for number 6 in roman numerals. I never put any significance on the number 6, but it could also stand for the number of her new family member's. Vander, Milo, Claggor, Ekko, Vi and Jinx.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya 5 місяців тому

      So much new details on rewatch, it's amazing! What I also appreciate in this episode and a lot of them is that the show is very fond of subverting the whole "misunderstanding" trope. Powder thinks she hear Vi badmouthing her but leave before the end? She gets to have a talk with Vi to clarify what Vi thinks of her. It's still one more chink in her armor because it echoes her own doubts mind you, but the misunderstanding doesn't singlehandedly cause a tragedy but rather it's an accumulation of a lifetime of little things that does. Same here, Cait's arrival bring doubt and tension, but it's not enough to turn Jinx against her sister, she was willing to think things through. And same (SPOILER)
      -
      -
      -
      -
      -
      In Episode 7: Vi says goodbye to Cait and Jinx obviously hates that but she's not a moron, she doesn't immediately think it means her sister abandoned her for sure. Only when Vi turns to go back to Cait does Jinx lose it. Even in the last Episode, Jinx is still willing to take a bit of time to consider what her sister is saying. Even an unstable person like Jinx has actions that are motivated by a lot of factors and not just that one stupid misunderstanding. I hate this trope so much but I love how it was used here.

    Hiemerdinger is very out of touch. He is a moderate who defends the status quo. Jayce is right, what does hiemerdinger ever do except say no to things? Sure his words SOUND good, but he never suggests anything actually meaningful. He’s right that there is a danger, but he ignores the suffering people are currently experiencing. The city has gotten to its current state under his watch because he would rather let a system that works “well enough” continue then try and fix things and risk making it worst. However his experience IS valuable and you do need some caution and thought before you take action.
    Jayce meanwhile is someone who sees injustice and instinctively lashes out to try and fix it, often without thinking it through properly, and as such can often make things worst unintentionally. He would rather do something than sit by and let people suffer when he has the power to change that. But he’s also very naive.
    An example I’ve always liked. The hexgauntlets were invented to make it so workers in the under city could do ten times the work with less effort. Sounds good right? Well no, the workers are going to be worked just as hard, but now they are more productive, which benefits the owner, not the worker (see the Cotten Gin for a real life example, invented to make slaves lives easier, but needed up leading to rampant escalation in slavery). Similar with the hexgates, they’ve made the upper city incredibly wealthy but none of their benefit goes towards improving the under city. If implemented correctly both inventions have the potential to massively improve the quality of life of everyone, not just the upper city, but it needs to be backed up with societal changes as well.

      @midnight1672 5 місяців тому +6

      Completely agree there. In this particular case and - given that Jayce told Heimerdinger exactly why they were so excited about their invention (i.e. the fact it could save Victor's life) - I feel like the least Heimerdinger could have done, is explaining exactly why it should be destroyed. Maybe he could have convinced them that it's not worth the risk or maybe Jace and Victor could have convinced Heimerdinger that they'll be careful and it is worth the risk. We will never know but as it is, he was hellbent on destroying it and wouldn't even listen, much less accept even the possibility of changing his mind.
      So - yeah - Heimerdingers intentions are pure but he's not the wise and infallible "Yoda", that people might assume him to be when he's first introduced to the show. He has got his own flaws and shortcomings despite his old age.
