    one can also argue that when powder/jinx is having the psychotic break; is that it is vi that is causing it (even though vi thinks she's reminding her of the old, good times), its reminding her of killing her family, while silco is desperately trying to tell jinx not to listen because he knows her trauma and triggers. silco did care for jinx, as vi did for powder. there was only an ounce of powder left and that little bit of her killed silco to saved vi, but in turn it killed what was left of powder. masterfully written.

      They are pretty much the "afterthought" region, in a lot of ways. Almost insignificant compared to all the lower-tech, more medieval/early renaissance regions. I did notice they started giving more non-P&Z, non-Bilgewater champions guns, which is good, because it makes no sense for Piltover to have laser cannons while Demacian soldiers run around with spears and swords. Like, what the hell are you guys doing? One would think Noxus would've gone full rifle-bearing infantry by now, along with whatever magic they can get their hands on.
      For a competitive MOBA it's fine, because hardly anyone cares about the lore, but in other mediums, the titanic tech discrepancy makes no sense.

    • @itsgonnabeokay9341
      @itsgonnabeokay9341 9 місяців тому

      There is a reason for that. Noxus has access to gun power that is why they have guns (Although it's still limited. That is why most of the normal soldiers can't use it). Demacia on the other hand doesn't have any of that nor do they have the technology. They would still beat Piltover though. Their army is way more advanced in other areas.@@djx7134

    I quite like that this episode shows how Vi doesn't really understand Jinx, even if she has good intentions. Telling her to remember Mylo, Clagger and Vander not realising that in her mind they are evil fantoms that haunted her all the years, quite the opposite from "Remember all the good times we had together!". Meanwhile Silco wanted her to forget about them and move on free from burdens of the past.

    • @djx7134
      @djx7134 9 місяців тому +20

      Vi only saw Jinx for a grand total of like 10 minutes since getting out, and maybe 2 of those were spent conversing on an even footing (ie, not strapped to a chair). Of course she couldn't understand. But Silco's the one who turned her into that creature. Could've sent her to the academy with all his drug money. She could've been the mafia princess in an ivory tower, instead of in the streets shooting people. Heimer would've loved to have another genius Zaunite under his wing. He was really proud of Viktor.
      But Silco had other ideas. I think he perceived Jinx as the personification of Zaun's beautiful chaos, because he certainly didn't promote the well-being of the actual person. It's not as though Silco is above using Piltover when it's convenient. He marched right up to the sheriff's house. Could've kept an apartment there easily.

    • @jagartha
      @jagartha 9 місяців тому +12

      @@djx7134 the thing about Silco is that the reason behind his love for Jinx is also the reason why he ended up hurting her. As she said he thinks it's the same as when Vander left him, from his point of view his way of coping ("become what they fear" speech) is a good one because it benefited him. He managed to survive, amass power, get closer to his goal. He would never have sent Jinx to Piltover because the reason he cares about her is that he sees himself in her, and going to Piltover is not something he'd want for himself. I definitely believe Silco had this weird idealization of Jinx as if she were, as you said, the personification of Zaun but also a personification of his ideal. He said it himself, for him recklessness, the will to do anything to achieve power is far better than intelligence or strength. Jinx doesn't pursue power but she has no boundaries and he admires that.
      What's amazing about this show is the inevitability. All characters act according to the information they have, their past and the way their environment shaped them. The last episode highlights that; even if Vi had killed Cait, Jinx would never have become powder. To Vi understand Jinx, it'd have needed a completely different plot. To Silco being a good influence, it'd have needed an entirely different backstory. Even when Jinx chooses her chair, it sounds like fate. She didn't want to kill Silco, it was an accident, so that means that once again she jinxed everything. It's an emancipation and a tragedy.

      @@jagartha Yes, he probably thought staying in Zaun while working as his enforcer (AKA, brute, bully, and assassin) was better for her, but only in the sense that he thinks being unhealthy and mentally decimated is the proper way to go through life. He had to realize that her mental health was completely shot. How could you not? It takes 3 whole minutes with the character from the start of episode 4 onward for the barely attentive viewer to understand that the girl is more miserable than ever before, barely hanging on by a thread. She literally tries to kill herself in episode 7. Even Silco had to know that this is not the sort of life anyone should want for themselves.
      Hell, even if he hates Piltover, send her to a neighboring institution. It's not like Piltover has the only academic facilities around, even if it's the best. Surely there are other options. He seemed to make zero attempts to procure a better life for her. IRL, mobsters send their kids to Ivy League schools. Rarely do they strap them down with guns and explosives and point them toward the enemy.
      BTW, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Silco's character writing. It makes perfect sense. I'm just saying that Silco's idea of love may be a lot different than the conventional IRL 21st century idea.

Also, just so you guys know, re: 28:59 - they actually added a control slider on her 3d model to be able to animate her _between_ Jinx and Powder. Like at value 0, it's Powder (rounder, the chin is dimpled), and value 1 it's Jinx (sharper, longer, eyes disproportionately tilted), but the almost never like 'snap' it between the two points, instead choosing various points along its arc to define her journey between the two mental states.
    By the end, I don't even think it's 100% Jinx, but once Silco dies, it never seems to drop below 50%. It's _so clever_

  • @wrath495
    @wrath495 9 місяців тому +8

    I think its pretty safe do dip into stuff like cinematics from the game and reveals of its characters. Riot wants to turn Arcane into *the* unified canon of the game but they are still *really*, like *really really*, far away from effectively making that happen. The closest you would come to actual spoiler territory from the base lore of the game would be by specifically getting into the backstories and lore of Piltover/Zaun characters and even then there are some sizeable differences when it comes to some of them and others are relatively similar. The conflicts of the 2 regions are at the very least, very thematically similar to the one presented in the show, as far as i know, though some of the specifics are different, and they are also way more, i guess "extra" would be a close word to what im thinking of (?). What i mean is there's a significantly bigger presence of "larger than life" characters even in these 2 specific regions in the game itself, so naturally the conflict also adopts a more "fantastical" element to it, than the more grounded approach you will see in the show.
    That being said, most of the cinematics onbly vaguely alude to some lore, and dont even quite fit into, at least new season cinematics, and they take the opportunity to show off the characters and what they are generally about in as spoiler free an environment as you can get. Think you guys would have a lot of fun reacting to those at least, if you ever felt like it.
    Then if any character peaked your interest all you'd have to ask is "Are they from Piltover/Zaun" and if the answer is no, you are good to go, since Arcane is focused on the conflict between the 2 cities specifically. There is a hint of outside interference through the presence of Mel's mom, but i vaguely remember hearing the writers clarify that Arcane is still gona be mostly self contained in these 2 cities, the conflict between them and the characters that inhabit them being very much the *core* of the story they are telling.
    TL;DR: Season cinematics are a really good place to start, as spoiler free an environment as possible to get to know some of the other characters that inhabit the world, maybe dip into specific character cinematics, hell even some of their soundtracks as well, some them will surprise you.

      Mel is a perfect example of it. Started the show thinking she was gonna be the classic political antagonist manipulating our heroes (because of so many pieces of fiction overusing this trope, and because that's what Arcane tricks you into believing), but as the episodes advanced, I started realizing : "wait she hasn't done anything wrong yet tho ?"
      And instead of manipulating Jayce she opened up to him and actually she listened to *his* advice and demands in two different occasions, when he voted out Heimerdinger and at the end when he made a deal with Silco.

    I personally think Mel is gone, which is another perfect reason to tie her mother in so much in the story beforehand. Really would give some strong motivations for Jayce and her mother going forward, no matter where this will take them.
    Furthermore, I think Mel had a good character arc as she laid down her family ring to vote for peace for her true home Piltover, instead of supporting the warring ways of her old home Noxus. Where before she still dreamed of returning to Noxus (the motive of her paintings), having finally proven herself enough to be accepted back home and be accepted as a Merdada. She finally trust her merciful side as being correct.
    I am sad, though. I think Mel is an excellent Character.

As someone who was deep in lore prior to Arcane there was very very little I knew going in and could predict throughout. I knew who the characters were but it still felt like i was seeing actors I admired playing new roles, they were familiar but also so different.
    As for reccomending videos, watch all the music stuff, and honesty any of the videos from Riot themselves. The majority of the "impactful" lore is in the material you can read.

    So, I'm going to start with my recommendation and then get into the heavy part of my post XD My favorite Arcane "analyst" has been Schnee. His video on Ekko really drove home that character as just... my favorite character of the entire show. Either way, what's good about him is that he speaks from the perspective of someone watching the show, not from a League lore-fiend first and foremost.
    This episode is one that has... meant far more to me than I ever expected it to. A little over a year after this show came out, my wife and I were going through a lot of struggle and conflict, and when we finally got to the point where we agreed that we just needed to go our separate ways, Jinx's final line there of "I used to think that you could love me the way you did before, even though I'm different... but you changed, too" just... slammed into me like a ton of bricks. Not going to get into recriminations or politics with it, but... at the end of the day, neither one of us were really the person we thought the other person was. So, independent of whatever "changes" had taken place over the years, the real change was that we came to understand that neither one of us were the people we'd believed we were going into the relationship. Still, this scene is one that will always mean that little bit more to me as a result. Also... I still will never forgive them for _actually_ getting Sting to sing the final song... that was a dirty move on their part!

    So many incredibly great and creative imagery and symbolism in this episode, with Mel ruining the painting of her home and taking out her Family's seal from her hand, or even the devastating transition of Caitlyn's mother voting for peace into Caitlyn's pained and screaming face as he mother is about to explode...

      It was extremely good, but the timeline was all over the place. Everything occurred in way too short a period, if we're to believe it all unfolded within a few days (from episode 4 onwards). Cait and Vi's side, I get, sort of, even if their relationship development moved at the speed of light. It happens when people experience multiple extreme situations together. But Jayce's storyline makes zero sense in that short of a timeframe.
      So, I hope they do a better job of that in season 2 (and beyond?). Otherwise, attention to detail was phenomenal in this show.
      Oh, and I also thought the dialogue was a bit weaker than it could've been in parts. But that's nitpicky, was really maybe a handful of scenes with questionable dialogue. The rest was adequate.

      @@djx7134 " the timeline was all over the place. Everything occurred in way too short a period, if we're to believe it all unfolded within a few days (from episode 4 onwards)."
      People often say things like "so much is happening" or "there's so much story packed into a single season, it's great", which I think causes some confusion when it comes to serious discussion about it. Let me be the first to say it. The stuff that happened made perfect sense within the 6 days (144 hours) that act 2-3 took place in, because all of the characters are doing things at around the same times.
      The attack on progress day happened (day 1), so Caitlyn got Vi out of prison to help her find Jinx the next day (day 2). They went to the Undercity and got a tip to meet Sevika, Vi got stabbed in the fight that night and got help from Huck the next day. They ran into Silco, found Jinx, then got kidnapped by the Firelights that night (day 3 going to day 4). They were kept by the firelights overnight until Ekko reunited with Vi and they let Caitlyn out too, and the three of them came up with the plan to bring the gemstone to Piltover.
      They head across the bridge at night (Midnight, possibly?) and Marcus shoots Ekko when he shows the gemstone, and Jinx blows up the enforcers and has a fight with Ekko. The explosion, among other things, gets Silco's attention and he goes to the bridge and picks up Jinx after Vi gets Caitlyn to safety on the other side. When the sun is rising (Day 5), Jayce and Mel get up early when they hear the horn blaring and see the carnage, as Vi gets Caitlyn to her house. Vi meets Caitlyn's parents, Silco brings Jinx to Singed, and when the council finally has a meeting Vi and Jayce say that fighting is a good idea but Caitlyn and Mel disagree.
      While the sun is setting, Viktor starts using his newly fixed leg and kills Sky while trying to heal the rest of himself, and Vi finally finds Jayce (because as made clear in episode 7, his forge area isn't exactly close to the council chamber and she doesn't have a map), gives him a middle ground idea: "Attack the place where there are (supposedly) no innocent civilians, and take Silco down by killing his business instead of killing his people", which Jayce agrees to for obvious reasons. A few hours later (day 6, AM time?), when he's finished the hammer, Vi knows how to use the gauntlets, and they have an army of enforcers in the undercity, they attack the Shimmer factory, and Jayce accidentally kills a kid. Caitlyn then gets captured by Jinx.
      The two part ways and leave, with Jayce heading home to think then looking for Viktor and Vi going to find Sevika. Mel's talk with her mom happens somewhat early in the day while Viktor makes his way to the place with the dirty water to dump Sky's ashes, where Jayce finds him and talks to him about the Hexcore. Sevika kills Finn and Silco gets a message from Jayce about a peace agreement, and they meet in the afternoon. Ekko brings Heimerdinger to his place, and in the evening, Silco talks to Vander's statue about their situation. Vi fights Sevika then gets kidnapped by Jinx, and Jayce talks to the council about the agreement while the moon is coming up, where they vote in his favor and then get blown up.
      Sure, the fact that most of the scene with Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, and Silco takes place before the meeting could've been more clear, but that doesn't cause the episode itself to be any less good because nobody notices anything. The fact that we don't know _why_ the characters might take hours to do something isn't a timeline issue, and whether it's an issue at all is subjective. Whatever the case, saying the timeline is "all over the place" when everything makes perfect sense outside of certain jumps is an extreme exaggeration. Also, if you are going to pretend that you are some kind of expert critic just because you think the show dropped the ball in some area while everyone else praises it, the very least you could do is pretend that you rewatched the show to back anything you said up.

      It's clear that the way the government works in Piltover is different from most real governments and that, for better or for worse, they come to decisions way more quickly. The only reason some of it seems sudden is because, unlike the world we are currently living in, terrorist attacks were an active problem during the show and he had to make quick decisions to keep up.

    We perfectly know what will happen. We know there will be war, we know Jinx is beyond saving, we know both Vi and Caitlyn will feel guilty for everything that happened, and most of all we know that the divide between Piltover and Zaun will never be greater than this.
    It looks like a cliffhanger but it really leaves no room for interpretation. No matter who dies and who doesn't on the council. To me it was the perfect conclusion of the season, every character ended their arc : Powder fully transitionned into Jinx, Vi finally let the past behind her and opens up to the future, Mel breaks her Medarda status once and for all, Jayce goes from following people to have actual agency and fight for the peace he always wanted deep down.
    It was fuckin brutal, but really good at the same time. Arcane is such a good show. Can't wait for season 2 (which is the final season by the way, they wrote the script of season 1 and 2 as one big script divided in 6 acts. And it's not great to be indebted to anyone from there ...

In the music video, the "Jinx" we see doesn't seem like she's tortured and mentally ill - it's just "older Powder" who is confident and capable - i.e. it's what Powder wants to grow up to be. By the main timeline of the season, my thought is that she thinks of her Powder aspect as being weak and ineffective, and the Jinx aspect as strong and effective. Both have massive trauma and behavioural problems, which she'd prefer not to have, but I don't think it's their defining difference in her mind.
      Artists be arting, even in a music video.

    Not really a lore vid but the BTS documentary Bridging the Rift that Riot produced is well worth watching, lots of cool stuff in there. It's a 5 part series on youtube.

    While we don't know exactly what's coming in season 2, there are some plot points (regarding two characters' ultimate fate, specifically) that will get spoiled if you dig into the lore.

    We do not know what happened to Vander's body.
    Why does Mel's back gold plates which are under her dress and blocked by the tall chair she's sitting on shine before impact?

    This is my fave show. You don’t have to play the game or read the lore. But now you can watch Blue Eye Samurai, another great show

    100% do not watch other material from League of Legends if you want to go in blind to character progressions. No spoilers of course, but for people who might disagree. If you look up anything about Ekko, you will be spoiled.

    Vi and Sevika's fight caused such a ruckus, beams of light exploding out of the goddamn bar, I'm surprised Jinx was the only one to show up and a crowd didn't form
    Edit: Your reactions to Jinx's "I made her a snack" moment was PRICELESS

    You could react to "Get Jinxed" it´s a music video for Jinx from her relase as a champion in league, it doesn´t have lore but it´s a really cool MV and portrays very well Jinx

    arcane/league world is so big that you can watch lore videos without seeing a single spoiler for season 2.
    Also, season 1 really changed a lot of already established lore so even if you get "spoiled" with something that the game has, it's possible that is going to be different. They already said arcane is canon so they really want to fix all the lore inconsistencies, but maybe we still get a different story, which would mean that that would be the new canon story.
    I suggest shambits gaming lore playlist, it has videos on different regions, and none of them are piltover/zaun (yet), so you can avoid spoilers as long as the video isn't about piltover/zaun characters. But for example, the cinematics that has Jinx on them don't really spoil anything.
    Also check out both season 2teasers and the Behind the scenes miniseries, it's only 5 episodes on Riot games youtube channel, so don't need to worry about copyright issues (as far as I've seen from other reactors).

    I don’t blame Jayce in the slightest for his first instinct being to put the weapons down and talk after accidentally killing a kid.
    If I accidentally killed a child, I’d probably immediately stop whatever I was doing and question everything I’d ever done in life - before probably ending my own.
    That’s a level of shame, guilt, and haunting that most of us will likely never experience.

    I would watch the season cinematics and the legends of runeterra if you’re interested. Legends of runeterra and Arcane are the only things Riot has confirmed to be “the new canon”. You can read up on some of the champions and lore stories too if you want but all that is just lore and not to be considered canon anymore as Riot has come out and said they will start clearing up what’s canon and what’s not. And all the stuff they will now release starting with season 2 of arcane will all be considered canon so there is no more confusion on what’s canon and what’s not.

    The main point about the peace treaty, which everyone somehow misses, is that Silko could ONLY complete the deal BY PUTTING JINX UNDER ARREST. And he said at the "dinner" that he wasn't going to do it.
    So the fact that Jinx fired at the council at the end only made the conflict grow more rapidly.

    • @djx7134
      @djx7134 9 місяців тому +2

      I'd say Silco could've weaseled his way into giving another concession over time. It might've taken a few weeks to iron out the details, but I'm sure he could've gotten what he wanted while keeping Jinx too, though there might be provisions to her caretaking, like consent to monitoring or something. He was a savvy guy, and Jayce is far from a shrewd negotiator while most the council just wants to wash hands of Zaun at the end of the day. I'd put money on Silco over them. Only Mel could rival him at the table, but she wasn't especially vengeful and would just side with Jayce. Jinx isn't worth an armed conflict.
      Jinx screwed Silco's plan and his dream completely.
