Cole The Cornstar, aka Cole, is a 4th generation family farmer from Central Iowa who is the life force behind his family’s 1,700 acre farm. Cole promotes agriculture by filming his day-to-day adventures with his Dad (Daddy Cornstar) and brother (Cooper) on the farm. With a lot of help from Daddy Cornstar, Cole instills humor and education into his videos fit for both young adults and adults. Despite being 23-years old, Cole has an old-fashion work ethic with an innovative approach toward agricultural technology and practices. Cole's mission is to prove the American Dream is not dead and be a megaphone for agricultural education and innovation, from technological advances in farming equipment to conservation practices.

Welders go in the front of the shop, not the back! Ours is on a 20ft heavy cord to reach out to center of shop. Metal working area layout, welder next to drill press next to wheel grinder on stand. In front of that small welding table, next to 4×8 heavy steel table, where you do everything, heavy vice mounted on corner, next to that a metal chop saw leveled to top of large heavy table. Best layout I ever had!

Going with the majority here: place the welder where it works for Cooper. Cole states they don't use it much but it seems that prior and during harvest Cooper was in many of the videos welding repairs. Placing the welder in the back of the shop negates the flow for repairs. And just where is the part, tractor, axle to be welded located...in the front of the shop, (just inside the door) just towed/dragged in for Cooper's attention.

Try building a couple hammer rack/trees. Saves space, you can see what is there/missing.
Consider socket bins in your shop storage arsenal. All 10mm (no matter the drive size) sockets that are not in a full kit go in a dedicated bin until the right kit can be found.
Also...44in pallet racking can be worked on both sides. If not...I found deeper racking did good to hold stuff in the back and allowed for bench work.
You can put lockers / Enclosures high on your walls OR Enclose your future racking (Cage/Fence or Plywood/Plexiglas.
Higher in the top of Pallet Racking can be caged with no climb fencing on 3 sides and gated/door to hold light weight and easily damaged insulation, plastic, door skins, paint/aluminum handles etc.
Get a higher End Label Maker or Cricut Vinyl Cutter to make labels, signs and stickers.

Leave the welder at the bench. Your efficiency model is flawed because the floor jacks are used all over the shop. The storage location should be determined by minimizing the total feet the jacks must be rolled during a year. Jacks used at the back of the shop must be rolled 200' to get and return. Consequently there really isn't a "best" floor jack storage location. Also because of their shape they can easily be rolled in under a shelf which is a more efficient use of floor space.
Plastic darts? Puleez. Get some real darts.
In a few more years Sable will be in charge of the caged tool room Cole will build. She will have a helper.

@@dorothyzbornak3757 I wouldn't disagree. I suffer (enjoy?) it also! I invest much time rearranging and making my shop cleaner or less messy.
What Cole should invest in is a real welding station. A heavy all metal table about 8' x 8' with at least 4' of clearance all around. Coop could fabricate some roll-around frames to hang arc blocking curtains from. Include an exhaust fan to suck the fumes away (which might also mean a small baghouse). Depending on where it is located (I vote for one of the back corners of the shop) new electrical circuits could be necessary. Several thousand dollars without a small catridge type baghouse. Several thousand dollars for the baghouse and exhaust fan alone.

So the focus seems to be the bench location. If everything is being organized to the bench footprint, move the bench 4’ ft towards the rear of the shop. Welder where Cooper wants it, tool box located in close proximity, floor jack and safety stands in place. Then all the Cornstars will be happy! Just saying.........

The factory where I worked did the 5S thing a few years ago. Pretty much everyone in the plant was involved with organizing some area. It made a huge difference to get the excess items out from underfoot. Sort, set, shine, systematize, sustain. If you've done the first four right it's easy to sustain. And if you've missed something it's easier to figure out what it is.

One way to equip the roamer boxes is to place them, EMPTY but for the most obvious basics, close to their expected usual deployment areas. Then when you need a tool head back to home base, pick up an example you're happy keeping in a roamer, and leave it in the roamer when the job is done. This will take longer and necessitate some extra walking in the earliest stages but you wind up with an organic evolution of tool loadout. Now, during the winter, is a good time to do this since you aren't stressed with tight deadlines like during harvest.
Also: move the welder back to the front where it gets used. If you ever spent ONE second griping about anyone ever moving a tool from where you like to use it, then you moving a tool from where Coop uses it is hypocritical in the extreme.

The shop is looking great. Just my own opinion and experience being a mechanic, put your screwdrivers high in the toolbox and wrenches lower in the top box. The heavier weight lower in the box tends to make it less tippy when rolling it around. Another option is to buy a couple rolling carts from harbor freight to keep the most commonly used tools in and the rest in the main toolbox on the wall .

Every drawer was the same out of 4 tool boxes. So when we did a tool check at the end of every shift, we would know what was missing. Not to mention every tool was engraved so we knew if we found one adrift which box it went to.

Glad to see you are using 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles. Remember to label everything. Developing a supermarket system you can access from a laptop in your sheds could also be useful. Don't forget to practice Standard Work principles. Develop flow charts for all the everyday tasks you do. This process helps to insure everyone does things the same way each time, reduces scrap costs and increases efficiency. I'm a retired manufacturing supervisor and have used Lean Manufacturing extensively. I actually worked in Iowa for several years at Eaton, Belmond, Iowa; Fisher International, Marshalltown, Iowa; TPI Composites, Newton, Iowa and Terex, Waverly, Iowa. Great channel and I watch everyday.
