Cole, I think I found your channel the 2 weeks after your first video. I feel like you are growing up (your face is more mature now),right in front of our eyes.Thank you for letting us see the family, the farm, and all it’s projects and progress.
Might want to label the back of all that beautiful woodwork you're having to take down so you know where it goes when it's time to put it back together.
Living in an old farm house myself, the trim is something I spent many painstaking hours carefully pulling out and labeling along with many wall cabinets.
I think what you might have been referring to was what was under the siding which is called shiplap or it could have just been one by fours but in any case there has to be something over that. And what used to be over that was tar paper and wood siding. And now he's putting Tyvek modern siding. If I'm wrong I apologize
The house videos were what brought me here a year ago. I have really enjoyed learning about farming and about your family. And now, I'm excited to get back to the house! And spring planting...haven't seen any of that yet. Keep up the good work!
My only advice would be that before you start removing walls between bedrooms you sit with an architect who can take your list of wants, needs, and desires and compare it with the current layout and space available and come up plan implement in stages. When my parents built their house they didn't use an architect and as a result the house now has a lot of quirks: the master bedroom is the smallest bedroom in the house, the width of the hallways failed to take the width of the trim work into account which prevented proper furniture placement from happening. An architect can find a way to preserve as much of the wood work and built ins as possible with maintaining the character of the house. Also, given the age of the house, I suspect the house is full of lead paint and asbestos which require special disposal procedures.
Lath and plaster and exposed plumbing takes me back. My husband and I have been renovating our old Iowa farm house for over 10 years. So many headaches but it's worth it. Can't wait to see what you do.
Impressive. Love what you are doing and I am certain your Grandfather is smiling right now. My Great Grandfather built a house in the 1800's and my sister lives in it now. These homes will outlive us all for 100's of years. God Bless you!!
I love your old house. My great nephew is living and remodeling my grandpa's old house which is his great great grandfathers old home. He doesn't have as big a farm as you because grandpa gave a lot of the farm to his children to build on. My nephew is a master wood carver thanks to his paternal grandpa so he has repaired a lot of the woodwork and made beautiful new things to go in the house. Your house will be beautiful as is his. He and his wife have brought that old house back to life and this year they are adding new life to it in the form of a beautiful little girl. My grandparents would be so proud of him as I know yours are of you. Young people like you give hope to the future of our country.
I am very much looking forward to joining you during the renovation of the farm house. I love the respect you have for the history of the house while acknowledging it is time for the house to move forward. I am so impressed by your work ethic and your value system. Thank you for sharing your journeys.
Ooh exciting!! Make sure you write on the back of each piece of trim what room it's from and where. I'm so glad you are wanting to preserve it all. I cannot wait for the kitchen to be redone. That is going to look amazing.
It was REALLY Cool to see all the before and after summary in one video! I've been watching since you cleaned on the basement but I really liked seeing prior video. I appreciate seeing the timeline and how you handled several reprioritization times and continued with your vision.
💫Cole... thanks for providing me with some fun and light entertainment during these times. You’re an inspiration... even for a person who has seen many things. You bring the hard work and bring the good fun. What a novel idea. ☀️ Thanks for the quality videos.
Glad that you are going to preserve the wood, it will look great once the other work is done. I have a similar project with my grandfathers house from 1860 so watching you first will most likely help me when I begin my project.
Couple peices of advice. Run ethernet to every room at least one line mabie two or more. Smart home people recommend 4 cat 6 per room. You may not need all of it but it is way easier to run wire with walls open than run it later if you need to.
Better yet, run PVC with a pull cord in it. Then you can thread thru whatever tech comes along. No need to spend money now for something that will be outdated by the time you actually need it.
@@kathyusa-iowa5137 I like this idea alot!! Good thinking. Jsut built a duplex and wanted to save some cash and did not run ethernet and am regretting it ever since haha
@@kathyusa-iowa5137 Yes!! Awesome idea!! I built my house ten years ago, and I'm sooo regretting not putting in cable tubing to all the rooms! It's a small house though, so WiFi usually works great. For Cole's house, I would DEFINITELY put cable tubing in the walls! 👍

Cole I love watching you fix up the house. I like seeing you remodeling the house. It's great what you are doing to preserve your heritage of your home and farming. You and your brother are great guys. Your parents are wonderful. I will be watching you. Happy Holiday and God Bless you.💞💞
When you were dropping the bricks you found, all I could do was hold my breath. That oval glass in the door--don't break it! But then again, tension is always good in a video. You did great. I'd number or mark your woodwork so you can put it right back where it originally was or you'll be working a jigsaw puzzle. But then again, that may be fun to watch too. Looking forward to your remodeling adventure on your beautiful mansion. Lord bless you, Cole!
Yes, mark and number the wood that will go back up. If you have asbestos, get the asbestos removal guys to come out n do it. It is more complicated than you realize? I'm not a fan of your blue countertops, a nice quartz would be great. It's both very durable and beautiful. Please, please save that kitchen floor! It is intrinsic to the age of the house and is gorgeous! Also I suggest you consult restoration experts. and do your research! Which I believe you will/are. I think (though I have limited view of kitchen as a whole) that if you take that bathroom next to the kitchen out you would have more space for a dining area. All said & done I think you will do a fine job. x
If you don't want to remove the wall between the bathroom and the bedroom, you could turn the bathroom into a laundry room and the bedroom into a bathroom. But before you make any major changes you definitely should contact an architect. Just to check that your plans don't make any major problems in the long run.
I enjoy all of your videos but especially the ones related to updating your home...love seeing neglected old homes brought back to life. Looking forward to more! 🙂

He did always doodle and he painted a pig smoking a pipe on the door of the chicken food shed and ears on the cat hole in the Quonset door. When he moved to town he took up oil painting.

April 7, 2024- I love seeing the original woodwork , it feels warm and cozy. I’d love to think that what all you tore out is in a huge building waiting to be used again, but I fear that most of it went up in smoke. It’s still good to see it again. Loved your grandfathers HOME. It feels good to me. ( and yes, I know- birds, mice, rotten-ing wood, etc. ) improvements were needed. Just mourning a bit 💔. Stay humble, Cole 🙏
My oldest brother put a school picture of himself along with a note inside one of the walls that said: "Help, I'm being held prisoner, get me out of here!" 😂 The new owners found it while remodeling and thought it was hilarious.
Cole your excitement is infectious (and I mean that in a good way)! It will be marvellous to start on upgrading the old and dangerous electrical wiring, and my gosh that is one horrible bathroom! How awesome to have that done and working again soon (ish). All my fingers toes are crossed that you don't encounter any more than your usual share of old house "issues" while you renovate!
Hey Cole exciting times ahead of you! Suggestion. if you're going to preserve and reuse your woodwork, when you remove it, make sure you somehow label each piece so you know which room it came from and number them and wrap parts together that you'll know that this trim goes to x door or that trim goes to y window. Putting molding back can be quite a jigsaw puzzle so if they're labeled and numbered in some sort of order, it's so much easier to re-install!! I'd also like to suggest if you remove any items (like light fixtures, etc.) that you do not plan to reuse and are in good shape, please consider selling or donating to Habitat so that someone else can use it! Good luck with your remodel!
Yes Cole, better still for 12" mahogany carved tongue and groove fitted footboards and molding I am sure "Habitat" would come to you! (Let me go puke now)
Cole, you should make the attic your master bedroom with a nice bathroom. Make a separate living space / sitting area, with a large tv, couch, recliner, the view out those huge windows in the morning and at night would be awesome! Man, you pulled the video down right when I was leaving my comment. 👍😀
I was part of a major Reno on a house like this years ago, I always said the attic would have been my bedroom! It was similar to Coles just not as big, it was an awesome room
Cole, you are a breath of fresh air during this 'pandemic'. It is great to be diverted from the stupidity happening in the world for the foreseeable future by watching someone just getting on with life rather than being stumped by it right now. All the best to you and your family. Carry on the good works.
When I moved back out to the house I grew up in, the bedrooms were upstairs and the bathroom was downstairs. Needless to say, I converted one room on the first floor into my master asap!
Cole, any old plaster attached to old lathe is most likely layered with asbestos. I found out the hard way and ended up paying more for the remediation of the plaster than I did for the renovation (the entire upstairs). You can get the plaster tested by a professional company, all you have to do is get them a small piece of plaster. Good luck.
It might be safer to get a better mask when messing around with that plaster and asbestos. We want to see you still doing these videos when you're older than DC.
@@Spazcan I understood it was mostly in the puttycoat, but my experience was all in S. California and my plasterer grandfather was passed when I was quite young.
First Prize to Cole for Home Restoration! Be really proud of yourself for all you have accomplished! Have you considered using asphalt siding for some parts of the house? You are so clever you have probably looked into it already-but if not, I recommend it. It looks exactly like wood, but you can imagine how well it wears as opposed to wood.. Gorgeous interior wood paneling and built-ins. I am an interior designer in California, with restoration my area of focus and it has been fun watching you go and I am so looking forward to watching as you continue. You are so cute the girls must be all over you. Be well young Cole. 👍🏽
If your going to put a washing machine on the second floor be sure to install a tray with a drain under it to prevent water damage if it ever leaks. I speak from experience!! 👍👍
I was thinking a heavy plastic tarp Could make cleanup easier on you it could capture the debris as you work and be on top of the cardboard. You are doing a great job!

Also, I’ve loved watching the transformation on the house, and I’m very excited to come along on the journey with you! Thanks for sharing it with us, and God bless! 😊❤️🙏
Exactly what I was thinking. With the house being from the 1930s there is a very high chance of asbestos. Would highly recommend having someone test it. Don't want to containment the house with all the dust.
His family bought it in the 30’s it is older than that. I seem to recall he said it is over 100 years old in past videos so likely no asbestos in the original plaster.
Cole your grandparents would be very proud of you the house will look magnificent when it’s all done. They don’t make houses like that anymore they don’t put any pride in new builds thanks for this Journey your taking us on.
I watch each video you put out since I found you on YT, but I’m really excited to watch the farmhouse remodel. You have a good start already. Thanks for sharing!
CONGRATS ON STARTING IT!!! Blue tape, or a sharpie on the backs of panels and trim, suuuure does help in labeling what room, wall, door, and side, they came off of. REALLY helps when going back together. Also, cardboard over windows really helps too. (...I was cringing when you dropped the brick towards the glass in the door.)
Had a house built in 1895 once with the same lathe and plaster inside construction and what you'll find is nothing is plumb, level, or square. Plan for frustrations and disappointment, it'll be a Pandora's Box, possibly a nightmare. Good luck, you'll need it. For those sections above the round attic windows, I'd suggest trying to do vinyl shakes, they look even better then cedar shakes/shingles and are made of vynil so they last and you can get them in many colors
Yes! I did this on a major remodel of a house built around 1900, all the gables that come out of the roof are done in vinyl shake, it looked fantastic and still does because paint doesn’t flake off of vinyl 😁

My oldest brother put a school picture of himself along with a note inside one of the walls that said: "Help, I'm being held prisoner, get me out of here!" 😂 The new owners found it while remodeling and thought it was hilarious.
A dick drawing lol
We found a cigar butt in the wall of our 1914 house when we re-modeled the bathroom in the 80's, that was a bit bizarre...
So pleased we are getting to the reno of the mansion. I am hoping nothing stops you this time from going ahead with at least some of it.
I remember all this even when you cleaned the attic ,the inside of house is beautiful woodwork
I love that you're saving that house. A lot of hard work ahead. God bless and peace. Looking forward to following this.
Oh! This will be my favorite content I've been waiting on! This is going to be so awsome watching the transformation!
It's going to be beautiful when your done. Lots of work but so much family history ❤
Cole your excitement is infectious (and I mean that in a good way)! It will be marvellous to start on upgrading the old and dangerous electrical wiring, and my gosh that is one horrible bathroom! How awesome to have that done and working again soon (ish). All my fingers toes are crossed that you don't encounter any more than your usual share of old house "issues" while you renovate!
its nice to see what he is explaining like from the ground up to the bathroom!
(Let me go puke now)
Exciting to see your progress on this beautiful old family home. All the best to you ...
Cole, be safe and healthy wear protective clothing and gear against asbestos with it being old home. Love you guys. 🥰♥️💞🌽🌽
Glad to see new renovation coming.... farming was fun too.
It is exciting to see you working on the house again, looking forward to seeing it get done!
im pumped for this reno.... im glad you want to keep the woodwork. i love it.
A downstairs master is a really good idea. At some point, you two will get tired of climbing stairs all the time.
When I moved back out to the house I grew up in, the bedrooms were upstairs and the bathroom was downstairs. Needless to say, I converted one room on the first floor into my master asap!
I like enthousiastic people renovating old houses and put new life into them. I also watch off the ranch Matt and his mansion.
Good luck.
pay attention to this....take it from an old remodeler...any smooth work that old will almost surely have it
that age of plaster is going to be horse hair plaster for this area
not 1919 plaster, more likely horse hair. Asbestos wasn't used much in houses until after WW II. (I'm a licensed asbestos inspector)
and separate the tray with rubber matting or similar to make a floating section of floor to absorb all the vibrations.
And reinforce the floor to hold the extra weight. Especially for if the washer goes off balance bad enough that it jumps around during the spin cycle.
Cole are you always so upbeat and enthusiastic? Your parents did a good job, what a good, can -do attitude in every video.
I was thinking a heavy plastic tarp
Could make cleanup easier on you it could capture the debris as you work and be on top of the cardboard. You are doing a great job!
This gives a very positive view of life. Love his energy. An inspiration to young generation.
I will defiantly enjoy watching these upcoming videos, its so satisfying watching remodels. Thanks for sharing this journey of restoring your mansion!!
Your grandfather must’ve been a very smart man to entrust his beautiful home and legacy to you :-) I’m sure he is very proud of you.
Also, I’ve loved watching the transformation on the house, and I’m very excited to come along on the journey with you! Thanks for sharing it with us, and God bless! 😊❤️🙏
I’m sure your grandpa would be proud❤️
Cole you are doing a wonderful job, love the old wood decor, I did the same thing on my 1929 home, glade you left it as is.
Amazing house, happy to to hear you are keeping as much of the original character as possible, I’m exited to see the upcoming projects.
So proud !! and happy to be along for the journey ! You can dooooooo it !!!
There could be asbestos in that old plaster too. It was added for fire safety. May want to wear a respirator and bag it. Have negative airflow.
i say there is asbestos in that house and he really needs to call someone to check for it
Exactly what I was thinking. With the house being from the 1930s there is a very high chance of asbestos. Would highly recommend having someone test it. Don't want to containment the house with all the dust.
Agree, and he needs a proper face mask with filters at the very least!!
His family bought it in the 30’s it is older than that. I seem to recall he said it is over 100 years old in past videos so likely no asbestos in the original plaster.
I was wondering about both asbestos and lead....
Cole your grandparents would be very proud of you the house will look magnificent when it’s all done. They don’t make houses like that anymore they don’t put any pride in new builds thanks for this Journey your taking us on.
Finally, back to the mansion and the make over!
I watch each video you put out since I found you on YT, but I’m really excited to watch the farmhouse remodel. You have a good start already. Thanks for sharing!
Good luck with the project, we’ll be watching every day!
Great to see the changes your making with the house and the farm 👍
This is so exciting to watch. You've done an amazing job transforming the house and farm.
Thanks for explaining the house. Interesting
It would be nice to see someone like,
“This Old House”
come out and help you.
I’m happy to see you having time to work on the house.
You can contact them This Old House. Com
@Justin Chism Agreed - they'd cost a fortune, and they take forever.
CONGRATS ON STARTING IT!!! Blue tape, or a sharpie on the backs of panels and trim, suuuure does help in labeling what room, wall, door, and side, they came off of. REALLY helps when going back together. Also, cardboard over windows really helps too. (...I was cringing when you dropped the brick towards the glass in the door.)
you have done a amazing job on the house so far Cole can't wait to see it when it's done.
Love this kind of video and really excited for your remodel journey. Old houses are the BEST!
You have come a long way with remodeling your family home. It looks good and is coming along very very well.
Had a house built in 1895 once with the same lathe and plaster inside construction and what you'll find is nothing is plumb, level, or square. Plan for frustrations and disappointment, it'll be a Pandora's Box, possibly a nightmare. Good luck, you'll need it. I'd help but but I'm some 375 miles away to your NE and can't reach you from here with all the snow and whatnot. On that cheery note I look forward to what should be an awesome result once you are done. I'm pulling for you, and 😎 my growing Pit Viper collection thanks you 😁
Cole tell your dad that I talked about him and your channel on my radio show today on kche radio in Cherokee. You guys are awesome told people to watch you guys and subscribe!
Your doing such a nice job with the house !!!! Thank you for sharing this with us brother!!!!
I love this part. How you ll make grandpa s house best as ever...
Just the history behind all of this is worth watching! So cool. Continue the stories or tid bits of history about Cornstar farm and family, if you will. Thanks Cole!👍🏻
Its going to look beautiful once you are done and your family is going to enjoy your grandpa's house.
