    I think it's bloody amazing that you don't wear make up in your videos!

      +Valosken i think people can look "bad" without makeup,but it's more like the reaction of when someone gets glasses for the first time or something,it's just a reaction to the sudden difference rather than fact.

      +Valosken by that I mean,the majority of criticism people get for going makeup free is probably that,best to think nothing of it.

    "don't do it because a youtuber tells you to" yes to this so much. i was somebody who was affected by a vegan youtuber once upon a time despite the fact that i had struggled with an eating disorder in the past. this youtuber said a plant based diet helps to solve eating disorders and i believed them. being plant based triggered me into restricting again and hardly eating at all. it really is dangerous the way that a lot of youtubers talk about veganism/plant based diets. so THANK YOU for recognizing that and speaking out!

    I really respect the way you speak about veganism. An awesome viewpoint to have. I was vegan before CFS and no version of veganism worked for me (despite studying to be a nutritionist, having the tools to know how) and went back to eating animal products to recover from housebound at worst (and it is working!) Ethical considerations and health considerations don't always sit in the same basket... can't wait until supermeat is rolled out though, cruelty free animal products grown from stem cells in test tubes! Saves so many food miles also.
    Also being plant based didn't make me lose any weight! Everyone is different. Sometimes a vegan diet may also be good for some people short term but not long term. Listen to your body first!

      @penguinsjd 8 років тому +2

      I also have cfs and fibromyalgia (both leave me housebound) but my cfs actually got alot better after being vegan, I think possibly because I was eating alot less processed food. My b12 and vitamin d have been a bit up and down but haven't had a drastic affect. Its interesting how it affects different people

    Vegan or not, anyone can eat bad foods and be malnourished. Plant based doesn't equal weight loss or eating disorder. Perhaps a video on how to be a healthy vegan would be helpful?

    • @emmablackery

    • @furrybroccoli1973
      @furrybroccoli1973 8 років тому +15

      Vloggery Hmm, I understand. Though other than B12 which is very easily supplemented, studies show vegans have no more likelihood of developing deficiencies any more than the general population. Also chances of young people becoming sick from eating too much saturated fat, cholesterol, animal protein, eating too many calories and becoming obese,having heart disease, bowel cancer or arteriosclerosis is far more likely and harmful than a simple tweak to a diet low in a certain mineral or vitamin.

    • @TheCharlieChitty
      @TheCharlieChitty 8 років тому +2

      I enjoy some vegan foods. However, a lot of vegan based meat produce use spiced onion and pickled foods which can lead to stomach cancer.
      You have just as much chance as developing cancer as a vegan than you do as a carnivore.

    • @furrybroccoli1973
      @furrybroccoli1973 8 років тому +10

      Charlie Chitty You make no sense. Onion and "pickled foods" do not give you stomach cancer. Meat on the other hand is a known carcinogen which DOES cause cancer.
      I have no idea what "vegan based meat produce" is. Do you mean mock-meat? Those are generally made out of tofu and or veges with flavourings and spices. Also, a lot of vegans don't eat them.
      And no, vegans have far less % of cancer (diet related cancers) than omnivores. And when you say "carnivore" I'm guessing you mean omnivore because humans are not carnivores and would die from trying to eat only a carnivorous diet.

      not ryan ross you guys just need to have balanced diet!
      Even if you were on SAD, or worse standard student diet you would be unhealthy. The only difference is the absolute lack of B12. That could be potentially dangerous if you don't supplement.
      Don't be scared of vegan diet, just do it right. Almost all people are deficient some times on something.

      Hey baby cakes :-) bananas and hummus are two very tasty things to snack on, but you gotta carb up. I would recommend watching High Carb Hannah on youtube. Try adding more rice or potatoes to your diet! The trick is to be eating things that are rich with carbs & nutrients (greens like kale, whole sugars from fruit). You want to be filling up on a variety of these things. A banana & hummus diet is very limiting and I can only imagine how poorly your body/mind must feel! A vegan diet is restrictive when you're not eating enough foods. Whenever anyone comes to me for advice about a plant-based diet, the first thing I recommend doing is RESEARCH.

    My art teacher in my senior year of HS is a vegan. She was awesome and didn't talk about her being a vegan unless you asked her. And she didn't care if you ate meat. The only vegans I can't stand are the ones that go around having to say that they are vegan all the time or try to convince you to be vegan and yell at you for eating meat. The way I see it is that humans are animals and animals hunt other animals and eat them. I mean some animals don't eat other animals yet a lot do. And we have the choice to eat meat or not eat meat since we have the ability to eat either.

      ***** The thing is most people that hunt now don't hunt because they want food. They hunt just for the fun and sport of it and just to kill an animal and most likely use it as a trophy. Also when people hunt now most of the animals they go for are defenseless. They sit in their tree stand waiting for a deer to walk by and then shoot it. A duck or goose also can't really defend itself either. Or if they hunt like a bear or boar they try to be as far away from it as they can be before they try to kill it. So what difference does it make? Either way an animal is going to die with a very slim chance of killing the person that is going to kill it.

    Point of order if I may Emma. Those nutrients in the animals are not there because the farming industry puts them there: they always were there. If the animals were wild and eating wild plants, then they'd still be just as nutritious: venison, which is by default always 'wild' meat (you can't factory farm deer in any meaningful way) is one of the healthiest meats on the market. If anything, the farming industry makes meat less healthy because it generally gets paid by weight rather than quality, so they do all sorts of things that pile on fat and water.
    The reason why animals' nutrient profile is such a perfect match for human requirements is because humans evolved as omnivores eating a wide variety of food including wild animals. Whatever the modern politics of the issue, it's as 'natural' for you to eat meat to have a healthy diet as it is for a wolf or a lion.

    • @HPGIRL1109
      @HPGIRL1109 8 років тому +1

      Harold Weaver Smith honestly, you both are right. Meat is naturally very good as far as getting nutrients you need and humans have evolved to take advantage of that. But they do add some things as well nowadays. So really, both are right. :)

    • @thebowingangels
      @thebowingangels 8 років тому +1

      meh, that's your opinion

    • @MrHws5mp
      @MrHws5mp 8 років тому +3

      brynja Oh sure, straight up factory farming adds all sorts of stuff, but it's mostly not to enhance the nutrient value of the food. It's things like drugs to keep the animals healthy ('cos it's cheaper to pre-empt illness) and compensate for the unnatural conditions they're kept in. It's also growth hormones to get that sale weight up, and that's potentially a serious problem. Mind you, many of the same things could be said about commercial-scale plant farming too, particularly with regard to pesticides.
      When I've got money in my pocket, I tend to buy organic or high-welfare meat which puts some economic pressure on producers to behave better, rather than just saying they won't make a penny out of me whatever they do ('cos then why should they care what I think?). Just for reference, here in the UK 'organic' is a rigid standard that actually means something, whereas I understand that in the US, it's just a marketing term.

    • @Morfeusm
      @Morfeusm 8 років тому +1

      Interesting. I would almost agree with you, but in what sense is eating meat natural for human as for wolf or lion? And also why you regard veganism as political movement rather than ethical one?

    • @MrHws5mp
      @MrHws5mp 8 років тому +1

      Morfeus We're evolved apes and apes are omnivores. We have a variety of teeth in our mouths that show characteristics of both herbivores and carnivores and our digestive system struggles to deal with many plants that we now eat without them being highly processed first. Humans in small primitive groups find it easier to hunt and forage than to do agriculture. The latter requires a relatively sophisticated social system that can divide and organise labour, control communal storage and predict the seasons.
      An ethical movement that seeks to actively promote itself, with social and economic consequences resulting from it's adoption, is automatically political.

      As someone who doesn't class herself as healthy and isn't a vegan, even I forget that I need good stuff sometimes. I meant the comment more as saying you need to remember that you can't just eat anything. It's not about eating for energy because pizza will give you that, it's about eating the right food and replacing the good stuff your loosing from not eating meat just like Emma mentions and I don't think a lot of people realise how much we get from meat products.

    • @tamppi777
      @tamppi777 8 років тому +1

      @palindromee 8 років тому +3

      wow okay, not where i was going but okay.
      Emma herself mentions the amount of vitamins and amino acids we get from meats and eggs as just two examples. It is hard to get them if you do just remove meat from your diet, you need to adapt it a hell of a lot and I think that is what people don't realise and what Emma is saying.

    • @tamppi777
      @tamppi777 8 років тому

      Hannah Tudor nah I think she made that very clear. It is not hard to eat a Vegan diet at all and get all the nutrients your body needs. People who don't do well on a Vegan diet usually are just not eating enough and wonder why they feel so weak and fatigued

    As someone who has dealt with disordered eating (mostly for my own internal reasons but other things definitely didn't help...like when I ate some candy and a friend thought it'd be funny to call me fat. I almost threw up. I was only 98 pounds). But I really appreciate you being responsible and knowing what you are and aren't qualified to talk about or give advice on. It's so easy for eating habits to spiral out of control. Mine actually started just because I wanted to stop compulsively eating whenever I was sad or bored. I was a bit of an emotional eater. Instead I tried replacing it with going on walks with my mom or friend. I really liked how I felt and I even lost a couple pounds and so I cut out more and more and went on more and more walks and it became a slippery slope that completely consumed my life. It's that easy, unfortunately. So I appreciate you instead recommending that people who want to change their eating habits consult a professional instead of a youtuber. It's really responsible and mature, and that's great! You're a good bean, Emma. :)

      ***** that and vitamin D would be the the only ones that can't be found. Vitamin D comes from the sun and B12 we used to.be able to get from well water and unwashed vegetables, but as the soil is so sterilised, we have to take a supplement.
      And actually even non- Vegans should take a supplement on both of those as b12 can be destroyed by some levels of heating

    I feel you really hit the nail on the head with this video, and your decision to keep your diet private is a respectable one. We are all our own person & we all have our own nutritional needs. Nobody should ever look to another person for a one-size-fits-all approach to healthier living. Imagine the fallout that would come from preaching a certain lifestyle and then retracting your stance after finding out it didn't work for you. The only universal approach people should undertake is learning who they are & what they need as an individual. We aren't lemmings, we are humans being.

    I am glad a vegan has finally acknowledged the dangers of becoming a vegan without properly substituting to get the necessary minerals elsewhere. There are far too many people out there just like "dont eat meat and milk" and get defensive when asked about how they get their nutrients. Nobody is doubting that one can not have a healthy life being a vegan, but like you say, its not as easy as just eating spinach for protein and taking a multi-vitamin.

    • @addangel
      @addangel 6 років тому +1

      Antony D'Andrea yeah but that can be sad about any diet. I mean people love to point out that a poor vegan diet can lead to deficits, but let’s be honest, how many people on a SAD diet are getting all their nutrients on a daily basis? removing cheese and chicken wings is not what’s making you unhealthy. not eating enough fruits, greens and healthy carbs is.

The way people glamorise their diets can be so dangerous, I have a friend who was constantly saying she was vegan and would use it as an excuse when she had to turn down food, however it simply was a cover up for an eating disorder. Love you, love this video. You have such a good head on your shoulders! I was vegan for 7 years and it was wonderful, but it was really hard. It was hard to eat healthy sometimes, it was hard to understand the nutrition, it was hard to incorporate a good variety, and it was hard to cook enough to eat well on that diet. I gave it up not because of my health, but because of the health of my 12 month old daughter at the time, who wasn't eating enough to be healthy on the diet and we started eating meat together so she would get enough iron for her needs. Anyway, I just respect your viewpoint on this so much and I'm glad you made a video on it. xoxo

    I feel I can relate to this video. I was vegan for 9 months and absolutely loved it. I felt amazing, my skin and hair thanked me for it and I generally adored the lifestyle. However, I was working full time and could afford to buy fruit and veg every day. It was only when I became a full time student I made naive mistakes and ended up only eating toast (practically). I'm a pescatarian now, and making slow changes to become a vegan once again. I was very silly and didn't educate myself enough (or how to bloody budget...I'm an idiot aha) but yeah, I appreciate this video!

  • @ActualOphelia
    @ActualOphelia 6 років тому +2

    Vegetarians/vegans have a completely different way of 'building' a meal, compared to people who do eat meat and fish. Meat-eaters (with lack of better word) decide their dinner by deciding which meat they will eat: "Tonight I will eat chicken with..." "Tonight I will eat steak with..." etc. Their starting point is the meat aspect of the meal, and then they go from there. With potatoes, with broccoli, etc etc.
    Vegetarians and vegans, on the other hand, start with the veggies. "Tonight I will eat spinach with..." "Tonight I will eat tomatoes and courgette...." etc etc. It's a different way of thinking.
    Don't just scrap the meat/fish/dairy from your plate. Substitute it. Substitute it for veggies, substitute it for tofu-based products, substitute it for lactose-free dairy. Substitute it for more fruit.

I don't really like to talk about veganism too much but I don't get a choice because all omnis do is ask me about it🙄 I spent a lot of time in hospital for anorexia so being vegan concerns people but in fact veganism has helped me recover because I now feel less guilty about what I've eaten

      BUT I understand this isn't the case for everyone. There's others I met in hospital who want to become vegan but have had to wait because cutting a load of food out is probably going to lead to relapsing. For myself personally, being vegan, or even vegetarian, is something I'd never go near. Excluding the fact that all meat I've ever eaten, whether it was squid in Bulgaria, snails in Australia, or steak in the USA, has always been prepared beautifully and been some of the best food I've eaten, and comparing that to the salads & other substitutes and there being absolutely no contest, people eating beef and stuff is actually good for the enviroment. Raising beef feeding off grass can help keep the grass growing and eating the cows means there'll be less methane produced. For me personally, any arguments that eating meat is "inhumane" ignores the benefits of eating meat entirely, and the animals will die anyway, in my eyes. Better to eat them then just let them waste away.

      Well I am kind of torn apart about this topic, but at least you are in the contact with animals you take from. If I were you and think your way, I would also help on the farm, talk to the animals getting to know them, help to feed them once in the while.
      What is your opinion on non dietary topics like medicines, clothing, makeup etc.

    EMMA! i gained so much respect for u in this video (on top of the respect i already have) ! in our current society where views are so extreme, you provide a voice of reason saying that, you choose what you want to do with your body. ive been fighting an eating disorder for over 3 years and its truly painful to hear and witness the things said around me regarding diet, especially that people shame others into changing theirs, or talk about their own as the prime example for others. there is no 'correct' way to be vegan or to eat, as diet is such a personal thing. you regard that in this video and that is SO important

  • @mercury8701
    @mercury8701 8 років тому +4

    I think it's important to mention that just because you eat meat, dairy and eggs you don't necessarily get all the vitamins and nutrients you need. You can still be deficient, so everyone should make sure that they get what they need if they are concerned about it. If done right, which isn't all that difficult, veganism is the best thing for basically everyone. All animals as well as the planet. Sentient beings aren't ours to murder.

    I'm not going to argue that you should carry on about your veganism (if you have to force your advocacy, you're doing yourself and the cause a disservice!), but I wish you wouldn't blame veganism for your becoming malnourished. All it does is reinforce the idea that being healthy as a vegan is super labor-intensive.. and it isn't. I mean, it's not as simple as Freelee would have you believe, but it's also not this horribly complicated lifestyle that requires tons of planning and math.
    Eat fruit, eat beans, eat greens, take a B12 supplement, and you're pretty much covered. All of those things, by the way, are also things that nonvegans should be doing. Nutritional deficiency is not a vegan phenomenon.
    You didn't get malnourished because you cut out eggs and dairy. You got malnourished because you lived on junk food, and I wish you had made that distinction more clear in this video.

    I would love to go vegetarian, but seeing as I am also lactose intolerant I would basically be vegan. I know I would end up eating next to nothing because I am so so picky. Probably just linda McCartney sausage rolls. The way I look at it is every little helps, I probably eat 7/10 meals meat free and that's still saving some animals

    I noticed for some people when they jump right into veganism this happens and it's simply because veganism is one of those things that no one really understands what it means to eat well especially with how easy it is eat fast foods and such. It's important to teach healthy eating over resctricting and that's just something that comes with time. I've been vegan for a couple years and vegetarian some time before that and boy let me tell you I don't track my vitamins or anything like. I just eat whatever looks good, but I make sure to have some variety and be aware of what my body needs and it's important to make a note that being vegan means eating more food than you would if eating meat/dairy to make up for that. Being vegan also means to connect with your body and know what you need, but again that's all about time.

    I think that's WHY you should talk about it. It's simple to be vegan - eat more whole plant foods as fresh as possible. I thinks it's more important we get people off the really negative foods like meat and dairy (that are linked to cancer). You're more likely to become ill eating a SAD than a vegan one :)

    I totally get your point. Though basically you can be malnourished with any diet. I became vegan and I'm the healthiest I've ever been. I'll admit that sometimes because i get tired from school I don't feel like cooking healthy stuff so I'll just go for the "easy" options and obviously that's not good. Then again, i think most teenagers do this and aren't that informed about what their body needs. It's true that everyone should do their research regardless of their lifestyle. Go vegan (but educate yourself).

    "the farming industry puts..." No. No. No. As a 3rd(+) generation farmer, absolutely NO. Yes, commercial mega-farms drug the shit out of things, but that's to make them grow _faster_ and _fatter_; it has nothing to do with nutrition. In my family's case, the cows roam the countryside eating whatever they want -- mostly grass, but that's not all that grows in those pastures. (hint: a natural lawn isn't 100% grass) When the cow is destined for eating, it goes to the barn and is fed grains -- i.e. corn, because it's cheap -- to remove the "natural" taste from whatever nasty things it's been eating. (namely _wild onions_!) Chickens were allowed to roam during the day as well, but were primarily fed corn meal. (best way to deal with kudzu, btw.) (and yes, Perdue does (did?) feed it's birds marigold petals to give them their trademark yellow -- again has ZERO to do with nutrition) Pigs? Watch the _Dirty Jobs_ episode where Mike was at the pig farm in Las Vegas.

      David Cox Could be good, but yoy don't need a nutritionist's help really. It is not that hard to just eat whole plant foods and to eat enough. I'd argue going to a nutritionist is research tbh Especially if you have specific dietary requirements or allergies or anything like that. And especially if you aren't sure what your body needs and are not sure what is the correct information. It's not a bad thing to go to a nutritionist if that's what you want to do

    i've been vegan for a year now and i hate it when other vegans say veganism is easy. it's not. it may be easy for THEM but not for me. you really do, like you say emma, you have to do tons of research on what to eat and where to get all your nutrients from. in theory, of course it's easy. just eat plants! but keeping up with all the variety of plants in your household its tiring and if you're not living in NYC or LA, you can't just go into a cafe or restaurant and order a cheap vegan burger or a nice vegan snack because there're not a lot of vegan places where i live compared to LA and NYC where there's a vegan place on every corner.
    it IS difficult to eat a variety of foods and not just stick to rice and beans and tomatoes. eating greens is especially tricky for me for some reason. i love salads but we're always missing key ingredients in my house (full of meat eaters so i'm on my own) so i end up eating plain boring salads with just lettuce and a dressing.
    sure, yeah, get a job and buy your own groceries, that solves that. but i've been trying to get a job and it's not like everyones gonna hire you, it takes time. living at home definitely makes veganism more tricky than it needs to be. when i move out, i wont have to worry about not having almond milk in storage or snacks available because i'll always keep myself stocked.
    but do you guys get me? when vegans out there always say "veganism is SO easy" it makes people think that they can survive on either eating vegan junk food all the time or eating calorie dilute foods like lettuce and carrots and think that's all they need to be healthy. what many vegans dont understand is that you need to eat calorie RICH foods like starches, fruit, grains, and legumes! so potatoes, rice, any fruit, grains like oats, quinoa, and legumes like black beans, peas, kidney beans, lentils. VARIETY is key, but variety is hard to constantly have in the house, ya feel me?? omg this comment is way too long idk if any1s gonna read this im done writing now some1 plz respond :D
