From a CPU only basis, it seems the M2's performance comes from higher power use rather than any really significant improvement in core design. Nothing here suggests any future M2 based mac (pro/max/ultra) will see a really significant performance boost at all, over M1. GPU is better (but not that much as better M2 performance is also core count driven). It doesnt look like there will be any particular general reason to change up from an M1 Mac right now. I was going to order a base model m2 air as soon as pre-orders opened up, but now I'm going to wait for Maxtech review as they are the only ones doing such a thorough test, i'm worried about the m2 air's SSD speed and also its thermal ability given the thinner chassis and no fan. Really surprised with the fcp benchmarks too. Thanks Maxtech, keep up the good work.
Has anybody confirmed if the 512GB models have 2 SSD chips? If so just upgrade to that if you can. On the M1 MBA you get a binned chip (1 less GPU core) if you got the base model. On the M2 Air it might be the same (making a 512GB SSD upgrade even more worth it)
@@DanielHarrisCodes i believe iirc zoneoftech got a 512gb model and it was getting the expected speeds which implies it has 2 ssd chips. M2 binned has 8 core gpu, non binned has 10 core gpu. 3D rendering is doing the wrong thing. I already mentioned, you need to add Redshift test doing the Moana Island scene. You can really see the difference there if you are really trying to see the usage of RAM.

I'll stick with my M1 13" Pro then. The M1 chip has all of the power I need, everything I do on this machine runs beautifully, I don't think I would notice the extra power in the M2, however I would notice the slower SSD performance, the extra heat, and the worse battery life! For me, this would basically be a downgrade.

My M1 MacBook pro has been great for sitting on the couch and supplementing my Windows 11 desktop that I use for daily workloads. With the recent improvements in Microsoft 365 device management for BYOD Mac OS, the base level MacBooks have become the perfect companion device for developers of SAAS and MSPs. Only thing I wish I could do is add more RAM (simply) and that it had LTE. This is why I still prefer to travel with my Surface Pro X (Windows 11 22H2 has made this device come to life).

I swear the only reason I can think of that Apple kept this machine around is due to the chip shortage/supply chain issues, which would make sense given things like that missing SSD chip. But then again the software crashes & overheating with the new M2 isn't a good look and honestly I'd wait until Ventura comes out in the fall before I'd use any of the M2 machines, including the MacBook Air. Dear Apple and Tim Cook, please let this machine go because I don't know what market segment you were trying to pull in with this to begin with and this laptop isn't up to Apple's quality standards anymore. The "mobile first" Touch Bar era of MacBooks needs to be left as a bad chapter in Apple's history books.
Getting the M2 with a bigger SSD and 16 to 24 gigs of RAM should be plenty of performance for anyone on the fence, including video creators like myself. If the M1 performance was already really good, the M2 is boosted to give you that much more performance. I'm getting the M2 13'.

That’s nonsense that chip could cost apple 20$ or so maybe even less
@@cricitta It's probably not about the cost, but the number of chips they can produce in time. Anyway the fact that the newer model only got half the SSD read speed is so ridiculous and unacceptable.
@@jonnykuang that will be just with 13 pro model, they want to get more hate on this model, cuz they want end production of this model, and change it on air+ 15 inch
@@BoyProFun Why would any real business and its executives want to risk damaging their brand and ability to market their brand, to BUILD hate on a product so they can end production of that model? Branding/Marketing (something Apples are very great at) is the lifeblood of any company and to enact your own damage to your brand so you can stop production of a certain product you sell is bonafide stupidity. Think about that.
@@sliceofmymind apple?? damaging brand?))) ahaah they don't care, they did it 10000 times, and still everything ok))
They trying to find "legal" way to stop support touchbar and all this crap
M2 just seems like an overclocked M1 with some extra GPU cores! Hopefully with M2 Pro they will actually be able to bring it down to 3nm and get some real gains.
TSMC's 3nm will only be available in 2023
@@min-of8cv sure but apparently they are going to production in the 2nd half this year, seems like the timing would line up well for apple to do this for a MacBook pro release. One can hope anyway 😉
@@clintondannolfo714 keep dreaming
i think not, why would you sell 3 nm if you can sell 5 nm, apple have no enemy in arm laptop series
@@ongkyreinaldo5831 For the same reason they sell the M2 Air when the old design M2 MacBook Pro exists, it's better!
Better off wating for M3 ?
On the M2 Air it might be the same (making a 512GB SSD upgrade even more worth it)
if you wait the review I think it already sold out 😂
@@DanielHarrisCodes i believe iirc zoneoftech got a 512gb model and it was getting the expected speeds which implies it has 2 ssd chips.
M2 binned has 8 core gpu, non binned has 10 core gpu. But the problem with the 10 core gpu version with 512gb is, if you also upgrade to 16gb ram, the price is then very close to the 14" macbook pro, which is a vastly better machine.
Seems Apple lets the M2 run hotter to reduce the power usage of the fan thereby making up for the increased wattage of the chip.
Can’t wait to watch M1 vs M2 MacBook Air🤤
3D rendering is doing the wrong thing. I already mentioned, you need to add Redshift test doing the Moana Island scene. You can really see the difference there if you are really trying to see the usage of RAM.
Was waiting for this comparison. Appreciate ya both ❤️
33% more power to gain 13% performance? Not to mention those 105C temps.
I think I'll wait for M3 on 3nm.
Keep working with the M1 if its faster and doesn't get hot. I'm still using mid 2009 and 2015 models. M1 will be the only better upgrade during these tough times with supply shortages. I'm a 15"-16" screen size person
best reviews in the game I make sure to share w all my friends!
please do a comparison with 256gb and 512gb for M2 to see what the performance difference is. I think this is an important thing to keep in mind and I think many people including myself would find it very useful.
Thank you for the great content and keep it up :)
I'll stick with my M1 13" Pro then.
The M1 chip has all of the power I need, everything I do on this machine runs beautifully, I don't think I would notice the extra power in the M2, however I would notice the slower SSD performance, the extra heat, and the worse battery life!
For me, this would basically be a downgrade.
are there any problems at M1 ?
I am a Japanese Mac user. I am surprised that M2MacBook's SSD is slower than M1macbook. This is a serious problem. I am going to teach this truth to my friends. Thank you for your good presentation. Arigatou.
What Size SSD is on each Model? For example - the larger SSDs are much faster than the smaller ones… Fascinating to see the massive difference in speed.
He said 256 gbytes on both
Such a voice, 5 seconds was enough!!
yes: very fast, a little bit to loud, in sum: hectic - on the other hand: I make my sound less loud, and save much time, I estimate about 30 % better performance than other speakers, and up to 60% in comparison to redundant unboxing-style "commentators" here at UA-cam - a great win!
There’s nothing to compare because M1 has 2 years and is patched to the neck. And M2 just released and needs 2 years of patches to out perform the M1.
It's like that in many things. The sequels always aren't as good as the original.
Mad thank you to Apple for shipping the less hyped Pro model first, if it is Air I would have bought it
My M1 MacBook Air still amazes me 😍
Air is a no buy now simply due to even worse thermal performance. The performance per watt does not change, this gen, let’s buy mini/studio/Mac Pro
glad I brought the M1 pro
As a diehard macbook fan, I am so disappointed with Apple that I bought a windows gaming machine for the same price. The only reason I use macbook is for Xcode.
I imagine Apple engineers sat in the HQ and some guy was like “just throw an M2 chip inside our remaining stocks of the 13” MBPs and remove one of two SSD chips and nobody will notice. Oh as for the box, just slap the new sticker on the old one and we’re golden!”
Max, Thanks a MILLION for including the Logic Benchmark! You guys rock.
Those SSDs are among the slower SSDs speed in the industry. The SSD upgrade for the m2 MacBook Pro should cost at most 50 bucks.
Guys, please fix your depth of field (focus) problems when you’re showing the Blackmagic SSD on screen! It’s less than useless, because it makes us viewers think that it’s going to correct itself and sharpen back up again, but it never does.
It’s just not the time for trying out new vlogging techniques.,
Thank u Max tech I love u channel so much !
Pls someone for advice 🙏. I have the max spec (2tb ssd 16gb ram) M1 13 Macbook Pro currently and cant decide should I update to max spec m2 macbook pro and the only major difference would be the 24gb of ram on m2 compared to 16gb on my m1 ?
Great video man! Watching of Brazil.
Love your comparisons, dude. Keep it up!
That's sad. It looks like the M2 is just an overclocked version of M1 with 2 more GPU cores.
I know this is out of the blue but I have a question 🙋♂️ what kind of processing power is it required to mix motion graphics on Final Cut Pro X? Is that single core performance or multiple and graphics ?! Cuz even with M1 Max Mac Studio I can’t play the mix of graphics on fcpx if I don’t render them first
Appreciate MaxTech for feedback
you need as much ram as possible
This is too bad, because the M2 MacBook Air looked so good on paper. As much as I'd like to have the power of Mac Silicon for editing on the go, the Samsung 13.3" Book Pro 360/5G you steered me toward last year was exactly what I needed.
Thanks for giving us all the info we need!!
Really enjoy your videos 🤩 thx you for inculding coding and music production
Bummer.. No need for me to upgrade my M1 Air.. The upgrade is so miniscule that i would just be wasting money.
Trust. Thats what i feel alot of people will also do once they see the new ipad 2022 model comes out going from the M1 to M2 thus seeing the difference isn't that crazy. I mean sure there will be a different but the M1 is wicked fast already. For me i would rather keep the M1 and go M3 which will be that upgrade...
The best part of this video is your brother doing Amigos adlibs.
Basically Apple seems to be doing what Intel and AMD are doing - running more power through the chip to increase performance.
I am sticking with my M1 MBP
Do you think it may be settling in problems? May be a stretch but given the additions to the chips the M2 seems to be two steps back.
Hope the M2 Air can be better - I think it might as the m2 pro would have been a lot less popular so maybe they’re going to bring in the full force with the M2 Air
Nope, if it get 105С with fan, what will be in fanless model?), m2 chip use same 5nm, even if it is 5nm+ what mean just additional chip size, but not new technology. M3 will be really something new with 3nm if so...
The air will be worse lol
@@BoyProFun The M2 MBP’s fan doesn’t even turn on properly. It literally waits till 100C to start ramping up, and even then it takes centuries to get to a decent speed.
100% a software issue. But the M2 MBA is concerning, it’s thinner than the previous air, and has a newer chip. Hope they make sure it performs properly.
@@Cappyey wouldn’t thinness help heat dissipation since there is a smaller distance to transfer heat from the chip- also the thick body of the m1 pro dosent help and although conducts heat- the thickness dosent help the heat to escape as efficiently
@@3X3-n3j If you’re referring to the M1 Pro MBP, then you’re wrong.
It being larger leaves more room for better passive cooling and two higher quality fans.
If you meant the outdated M1 MBP, then I 100% agree.
Oof. Not a good look for apple. Cripple hammer the m2 13'' on the SSD limits the gains that it could have had to be sure. We all knew this was a "let's use up spare parts" config, but wow, that m1 air for example looks like a massive beast in comparison for the price point for anyone looking for a good basic laptop in the mac environment on the cheap. Im super curious to see what m2pro/max/ultra will bring in the 14/16'' down the line in likely 2023, something tells me that we will continue to be more than happy with our m1pro/max/ultra until at least m3 or even beyond. This is one of those times where "Early adoption" seems to have been a winner to be sure, which is almost never the case with anything. Great video as always guys. Thanks so much!
I admire the honesty of your channel
It's disgusting that channels like Rene Ritchie calls benchmark tests "toxic" to excuse Apple for cutting corners.
Can't wait to see the comparison between the M1 Air and M2 Air's performance differences.BTW i always love your videos.keep up the great content💝
my 16 inch M1 is incredible. don't have any reason to get the M2
hey man, you are doing a great job! simple, honest and straight forward.
Waiting to see what Apple did to the m2 air SSD
I heard on the M2 Apple is using one 256 SSD memory chip where on the M1 they used two 128 SSD chips, which deliver much faster SSD speeds due to multi chip/ bus.
@@dbstamper2626 It's in m2 macbook pro. They did it for cost curtailment as they are keeping the price same as before. But they increased price in air. So there is a chance it might not be the same
@@sabbir_fahim and it's also some kind of flagship product so they would be very stupid if they do the same trick
Great videos guys, happy i found your channel and you!
Thanks for this thorough and honest review Max Tech!!!
You are the best mac reviewers

Portland, JAMAICA in The Building !!!!!!
Thanks for this video, really complete. Even though I watched the WWDC it is always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Moral of the story! Who ever you are, don’t buy the M2 Macbook Pro! Its an afterthought product. The real M2 computer is the new Macbook Air.
Well, this basically confirms Apple did of the 13" MacbookPro a pretty worse product intentionally. When you look at the M2 Pro in comparison with the M2 Air you are going to say basically "M2 Pro is shit, M2 Air is great". We are looking at the end of the 13" Macbook Pro.
I am debating wether to buy a M1 or the M2 pro?! Based on this I feel like the M1 is better. But as a fist time MacBook buyer I’m not sure. Any thoughts?!?!?!
There is not much difference between m1 and m2 so m1 would be a better choice
Image quality of the WebCam is noticeably better, but likely only because of better image processing on M2.
On the 3D Blender.. The time bar shows M1 took less time, but you comment seems to indicate M2 is faster...
You all are doing truly astounding position. I truly love to watch your recordings cause, I'm interested to find out about the innovation that update regular. So thank you Max Tech for refreshing us and for the MacBook M1 give way.
M2 seems like a total money grab deal. The difference between M1 and M2 is €600 in Europe.
Thanks for this wonderful and comparison. We can see Your effort. Your work is worth it. Keep it up.
I feel like the slower SSD speed is the reason for a bit of the lower performance difference.
I’d like to see a comparison between two with the same SSD speed
He doesnt compare what is comparable here?
I will wait for your review, before considering to buy M3 :)
TYSM FOR THE AWSOME VIDS
I would still consider buying your old M1X Merch. Collectable Mistake.
Thanks for the content, keep up the good work!
"Mr Cook, We have depleted all of our surplus 13" MBP Chassis in the 1st week of the M2 sales to various UA-camrs"............."Excellent Smithers, mission accomplished"
Your content is fantastic 🏆
The 13" MacBook Pro really is the redheaded stepchild of the MacBook lineup isn't it? I swear the only reason I can think of that Apple kept this machine around is due to the chip shortage/supply chain issues, which would make sense given things like that missing SSD chip. But then again the software crashes & overheating with the new M2 isn't a good look and honestly I'd wait until Ventura comes out in the fall before I'd use any of the M2 machines, including the MacBook Air. I thought I was being a stupid Apple consumer fanboy for biting the bullet and trading in my M1 13" MacBook Pro to a 16" with M1 Pro in it. However it looks like I really did make the right decision after all.
Tim Crook is the biggest crook , trying to put more money in his pockets by cheaping out !!! First the chargers then headphones then chips 😂
Getting the M2 with a bigger SSD and 16 to 24 gigs of RAM should be plenty of performance for anyone on the fence, including video creators like myself. If the M1 performance was already really good, the M2 is boosted to give you that much more performance. I'm getting the M2 13'.
Why not get the 14” base then?
@@MaksimYuryev I guess for a 100.00 more I could have gotten the 14', but I like the 24 ram option, and if I wanted 32 for ram on the 14, it would have raised the price significantly. Plus, the M2 chip performance isn't that bad at all, it has plenty for my use 😊.
I preffered the M1 speakers
wow, what an extensive comparison. kudos
Love the channel brotha. With respect , please change the speaker song example 😂
Great content-Really appreciate your efforts!!!.These Informative and entertaining video’s are so great!!!-I can’t believe the M2 was slower then the M1 in some areas such as the ssd!.
Please compare M2 vs M1 ultra Humble request you please 🇮🇳🙏
I am waiting for iPad pro 2022 model
Great review! I am very happy with my M1 and am happy I got it earlier. Thanks guys!
Thank you for your honesty mate
Fascinating. Thanks for this thorough comparison. SSD performance so sad.
Could that be solved with a software update ? If apple releases one ?
I would wait for ur video before buying M2 air
Just for the record, just having speakers get louder or have more bass does not necessarily mean they are better (not this time, they are exactly the same, but I notice that always seem to be your comment). Certainly audio quality is based on many other things too.
You're EVEN going to do a battery life test?!?! 😱 NO WAY!
the answer for this product is straight forward: it’s macbook gov. it’s not for us consumers. in order to meet the RFP requirement, the product needs to be publicly available. also needs to be new enough to last yet old enough so it’s easy/cheap to maintain. think about the global gov/mil/edu balk purchase. aapl is making the right decision.
