The praetorian guard got more and more power as the years went essentially deciding who becomes emperor. At one point they even sold the office of emperor to the highest bidder. Also if they weren’t paid you were pretty much on borrowed time.
Yea problem were with each Emporer who came into power they had to give a cash gift to the army and the guard it also long term lead to the fall of the empire there was even a leader of the guard who tried to make himself Emporer
A similar problem happened to the ottoman empire and the janissaries (elite soldiers) at some point they got so much powerful that they could install a sultan and dethrone him whenever they wanted to, and If you are not paying them enough or god forbids you tried to take their power, well your paying a visit to the grave
It's like convergent evolution. So many empires have had that fault, their elite guard becomes their terminal illness.
And they even tried to account for that by Essentially brainwashing and controlling them from birth raising them to solely be Janissaries. but as a group does they start getting political power and essentially everyone is too afraid to stand up to them.@@-thescholar5805
I suppose that's why the Eastern emperors decided to contract elite foreign mercenaries as their personal guard making sure their fates aligned. If he dies so do they.
Emperor: *Fails*
Praetorian Guard: Emperous Deletus
This really makes you appreciate the Varangian Guard. Those Nordic lads were loyal 😤
Because they were generously paid.
As long as they were paid. And by the end of their existence, it was comprised mostly of a mix of Britains and Danes.

The Praetorian Guard killed at least 13 emperors who granted most were terrible until they killed Aurelian... the "Restorer of the World"
Yeah it's weird when there's things like a Wikipedia page dedicated to listing them.
Though, being fair, the last one was because they were tricked by Aurelian's secretary 'Eros' and after they found out they promptly put him to death.
@wheelhousers1355 ? The wiki page also has 13 which are confirmed to be done by a member of the guard but 20+ other emperors were killed by a mob or their soldiers
So they wouldn't count as the Praetorian Guard
“Aurelian was like the Sandy Koufax of Roman Emperors,” - Mike Duncan
I love the “Year of the X Emperors” naming tradition in Imperial Roman history. You have the Year of the Four Emperors in 69 AD, then the Year of the Five Emperors in 193 AD, then the Year of the Six Emperors in 238 AD. It just keeps getting worse.
And after that, they basically stop trying to give them cool names because it becomes rare that there isn’t at least three claimants to the throne in any given year.
“Particularly after Julius Caesar.” Mr Sulla would like a word
Poor bastard always gets overshadowed, even though his actions allowed Ceasar to rise the way he did.
@@ambreentariq1423 sulla didnt like or trust caesar, they were both after the same thing
You might wanna check out the crisis of the third century. It’s a really interesting period and extra history has a good series on the time period. The current walls around Rome bare the name of one of the better emperors of the period, namely Aurelian.
Better is a understatement I think. Aurelian might be one of the most if not the most capable Emperors of all time
Antonius Primus. Thank you. I now have the name of my next Bannerlord character.
It's a pretty good one. Especially if you're playing as Empire.
Your Roman history videos are by far my favorite. I’ve been watching Roman history videos from these channels myself but your connections and learning with you definitely add a layer to it
You would love the Unbiaised history of Rome then
You mentioned you don't know much of chinese history. Since you're saying to throw reactions to you @XiranJayZhao did a deep dive on Wu Zitian, China's first and only female emperor. Zitian's story is very simular to Catherian the Great. And Xirian did a good job at presenting the story. :) It's in two parts each one about an hour long so should be a mini series for you :D
Another great video VTH! Just wanted to defend Vespasian a little though, as he is an emperor I see as one of the best, and I don't feel it is entirely accurate to say that he wanted others to do his dirty work. He was fighting in Judea at the time, when news had come months after the fact about the death of Nero, deposition of Galba and Otho and the request of loyalty by Vitellius, all in quick succession. Vespasian was a relatively hands on general, who was preparing for his own invasion of Italy with his Legions in the East; it just so happens that the Danube Legions who also had risen up in revolt in his name, where much closer to Rome and could more effectively attack Italy. Vespasian was also making a calculated decision securing the critical grain supply in Egypt, as well as stabilising his position and support base in the East before moving West. Vespasian is certainly one of the more underrated emperors, especially during the 1st century, as he was the kind of figure that drew admiration and loyalty from those he was around, without the privileged and more erratic tendencies of other emperors of this period. He crucially ended this period of instability, establishing one of the more prosperous dynasties in Rome, the legacy of which would lay the ground work for the succession of some of the greatest emperors in Roman History, the five good emperors. Very interesting chap!
Heh Heh Heh. The summer of '69.
Nice!
yeah, we were killin’ time, we were young & restless,we needed to unwind. guess nothin can last forever, forever, yeah
Tourist tip: Cathedral of St Clement; easy walk from Colleseum- 14th century church on top of 4th century (I think) church on top of a temple of Mithras…..very, very cool. Best five bucks I ever spent.
"Didn't properly pay the Praetorian guard" ... I am like Bro, do you have a death wish. Seriously, even if the empire was totally broke that would be the one thing I would be sure to find money for.
8:43 Learned that when a documentary described a part of "northern Austria, called lower Austria"
I see you make a Rome video, I click immediately. Been studying Roman history for 8 years now. Highly recommend Mike Duncan!
I'm loving the recent videos on Rome. I'm more interested in ancient history but especially the roman empire. I'm so fascinated by it especially during the 1st century. So I'm loving hearing you talk about this and giving your thoughts.
I've been listening to Totalium Rankus ranking Roman Emperors, so I was listening to Nero when I saw the video about Nero, and now I was listening to them rank Galba as this was posted.
Is that a podcast or UA-cam channel. I can't locate it
@@caesarion1399 Podcast, though I might have switched the faux latin endings and its Totalus Rankium. ... Fake Latin endings do not stick well in my mind.
I love Italy
Roman history is one of my favourite periods so always love these Roman videos. Gutted I couldn’t join you in Italy, especially given I’ve been working in Austria for the last 6 months. Unfortunately the timing just didn’t match up with work. Looking forward to the videos you make whilst there though
You should cover some more Knowledgia, they have some great content
Hey, a fun video I think would be about lost accounts through history. One's that we knew existed and more of your commentary on them.
I must say, I've always found the Year of the Four Emperors to be a rather fascinating point in Roman history. It kinda seems almost like a foreshadowing of the Crisis of the Third Century in many ways.
Speaking of Roman history, do you plan on continuing Historia Civilis' Fall of the Roman Republic series (not the official name, but that's what I'm calling it because it fits) at any point? Because it is a really good series.
The problem, of course, is that the Praetorian Guard had no intention of "taking the field." Typical. 🤣
Nice shoutout to Upper Sandusky, or simply Upper as the locals call it.
I've always found Rome fascinating in its relationship with the Emperor.
In most places, at least those under Christian or Muslim rule later on, the monarch is seen as a divine sovereign, and few people would dare challenge them, much less kill them.
Rome, on the other hand, saw their Emperor as "a guy who leads us" and had no problem with removing, assassinating, or going to war with the Emperor.
Haircut looking fresh 👍
You should play the total war Rome 2 in your gaming channel
Finally some more Rome content, I love it lol.
Will you ever do a battlefield 1 Campaign playthrough on VTH gaming it’s a WW1 game
Do kings and generals video on my favorite Roman Claudius. It’s a step back but he’s my favorite and his rise to power is just hilarious
I was watching your reaction to Philomena Cunk the other day and couldn't think who you reminded me of. It's just come to me. Zlatan. I guess you've had that before?
I love that the year of the 4 emperors is 69 AD
NICE!😏
Little bit of a branching off from your typical content, but have you considered making videos about Centurii-chan comics? Shockingly historically accurate for cutesy comics.
Quite enjoyed this scenario in the Alea Jacta Est AGEOD game. Which was the best of the AGE games IMO.
I can’t think of most of Roman Empire era history without quoting Life of Brian.
Romanes Eunt Domus? People Called Romanes They Go To The House?
@@coachgoltzbizpro23the Wittle wascal has spiwit!
Seeing Vitellius and Vespasian makes me wonder, have you ever read the Rome novel series by Simon Scarrow? Well if not, this long running book series is slowly coming around to this scenario (currently in 59 AD) and I wonder how Simon Scarrow will use this conflict for his novel and imbue his characters into it, especially as he had put a lot of focus on Vitellius and Vespasian during the invasion of Britain in his earlyier novels.
Keeping the roman theme, the extra history series on the third century crisis is definitely worth a watch
I hope you’ve been listening to Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast Chris!
thnks for all the rome related content , ROMA INVICTA!!!
Any chance we can do useful charts’s video about the line of emperors?
I remember learning about Upper and Lower Canada in school, always confused me because they were named according to Britain’s geography, not north and south.
Hi Chris would like to see you continue on Julius Caesar series on kings and generals.
He didn't pay the people who assassinated rulers ... what could go wrong?
If you really want to dive in some Roman history (and just Italian history in general), the "History Summarized" series from Overly Sarcastic Productions has some great videos! They would make for some good reaction videos as well!
Can you find something on Clara Barton?I've only got Drunk History, lol
Hey, brother. A recommendation I have is from this particular channel, premodernist. Definitely worth checking it out 🙏
will you be doing a video for the crisis of the third century?
Whitebeard, Shanks, Big Mom and Kaido?
OR
Shanks, Luffy, Blackbeard and Buggy?
20:37 Peace was never an option.
Should react to some of tasting history's videos on roman recipe and history :)
If you’re doing more reaction on Roman history you should watch the gracci brothers series by extra history (they did a one off on their dad aswell so could react to that aswell)
Can you watch a video on Aurelian by any chance? I think you'd love the guy
Got a new video reaction recommendation for you. I'd love to see you pick apart the reasoning this guy uses for many of his arguments: "Who Would I Vote For in Every US Presidential Election?" by Monsieur Z. He has some decently thought out view points, but his video is full of so many contradictions that it has left me confused. I'd like to hear your take on it.
You need to play Knowledgia's videos at 2.5x speed just to get to a normal lecture pace.
Events like the final civil wars make we question why people like the Roman Empire so much.
20:40 I feel like the pratorians just wanted him dead but it would look bad if they kept killing emperors back to back so tthey told him to go to his room until the war was done lol
Brother!
Hey vth can you start making videos on napolean III and his rise to power from the wars with Austria to the franko prussin war
You should react to spectrums ranking of all Roman emporers
You need to react to Internet Historian's the Gentleman Pirate, please!!
Hmm. Who’s running the show? Praetorian Guard. Military Industrial Complex. We’re doomed to repeat history.
If you think that's bad, just wait until you get to the Five Good Emperors. Especially HADRIAN.
You should do a reaction on spectrum. He has Roman emperors tier list
Hi VTH, please react to Knowledgia's Mexican American War explained in 16 minutes. Love and support from India
Unfortunately one of our presidents was killed by his own secret government 😞. I was just in dallas visiting the book store depository. Got to see where the shots came from museum was kinda mid tho
If the Praetorian Guard were like Sempronius Densus the Praetorian that stayed loyal even when the rest of the Guard have deserted and/or switched sides wonder if the Empire would have lasted longer due to increase in stability due to a lack of constant shifting power. I think his actions are one of the few "heroic" deeds(That I have read) during the Year of 4 Emperors Era.
Its kinda sad when foreign mercenaries such as the Varangian Guard were more loyal to the Imperial Family later during the early Middle Ages until the Fall of the ERE.
Your description of the 2 emperors , a safe guy after a wild guy, is strikingly similar to our last 2 presidential elections. Lol
Otho did lose the initial battle before taking his own life though
you should watch something on Domitian. he's super underrated
Right off the top of my head, I think the Roman Republic had 4 civil wars. Most of them were pretty short.
Please do more roman content, its great!
8:26 The Lower vs upper thing is its closeness in regards to Rome. Pannonia, Moesia and Germania superior are all closer to Rome while their "inferior" counterpart are further away
I don't think that's correct. They used Ulterior (further) or Citerior (nearer) for that purpose, such as they did with Hispania, or Cis and Trans as they did with Gaul. I believe Superior and Inferior were indeed based on the Rhine River and its direction. Either way, the terms for Germany weren't officially used by the Roman Empire until a few decades after the events in this video.
Otho, most honorable roman emperor
if you’re looking to learn more about Roman history, I highly recommend The History of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan
Biographics did a great video on the Year Of The Five Emperors that’s worth watching.
I'm once again asking you to react to historia civilis
So the people organising a rebellion against Nero didn't have a plan for what happened when they overthrew Nero?
Hi, Could react to The Constitution of Athens from Historia Civilis. I would like to know your opinion.
Could you react to The Rise of Prussia by History matters
11:12 i mean my god that poor kid, wonder what ever happened to him?
He took his own life in order to prevent extreme humiliation and painful death by Vitellius
Hey, if you want an incredible source of info to learn about Ancient Rome, check out Mike Duncan's podcast series. It's not too visually appealing in the beginning (being almost all sound), but if you're interested, it is one of the best podcasts I've ever listened to.
React to Gustavus Adolphus the father of modern warfare
Please react to Cool History Bros and Al Muqqadimah
Loving the roman content as it's my favourite period of history along with medieval Britain. Biographics have a good video on the year of the five, its just after Commodus' reign their is also a year of the 6 during the crisis of the 3rd century which is the most wild period for roman rulers
Thucydides Logographos does great Roman History videos
He has an entire series on the Roman Empire and its Emperors
Chris, when I saw the tital to this video, I thought, "There it is. Chris is finally jumping into ancient Chinese history." You keep threatening to do that, and I keep hoping that you will! Since my knowledge of the War of the Three Kingdoms period is ultra-minimal, I was easily confused, although you'd think that the use of "4 Emperors" would've made it clear. Anyway, thank you for more good content@ Scott
I love your videos but can you pleaseeee react to Korean war by armchair historian
Please do what if Napoleon actually invaded Britain by US of Z
@15:19 “The needs of the Many outweighs the wants/needs of the few/the one”
2:56 see 2020 US Election :)
Exactly!
Day 1 of asking: Can u watch armchair Historian ww2 from america perspective
You should hit up Extra History's series "The Third Century Crisis", it's a great look at a much later period where the Empire could have fallen, with very important emperors who don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve, like Aurelian or Diocletian.
The Third Balkan War by Knowledgia
During that year Vespasian's second son Domitian and Vespasian's older brother Sabinus were in Rome, with Sabinus trying to convince Vitellius to step down in exchange for guarantees of safety and money. However, Vitellius' supporters killed Sabinus.
The same didn't happen to Domitian who went on to become emperor after his father and his older brother Titus and probably remembered the flipflopping of the senate during the Year of Four Emperors, likely contributing to his decision to sideline the institution in favour of equestrians and freedmen (which got him killed after 15 actually rather successful years as emperor).
Day 11 of demanding an Unbiaised history of Rome reaction
"Wiping out that regions identity"
You mean the identity it had had for centuries if not millenia as Cana'an?
