    Today, I'm testing out the 22W Alpha from Algolaser, a super powerful laser engraver which will finally see me using a laser often in the workshop. Huge thanks to ‪@algolaserofficial‬ for setting me up with the tool. I've had 2 previous lasers in the past, both of them much, much, weaker - around the 5w or 10w level, and they were never able to convince me that using the laser was anything more than a gimmick for lightly drawing a logo on a piece of timber. The Alpha has changed my mind on them, 22W is enough to deeply engrave and cut through hardwood, cut right through thick MDF/Ply/Pine, and even colour engrave on stainless steel. I got through 22mm Pine with nice clean cuts, amazing! I think it will become a commonly used tool in the workshop, and I'm eagerly thinking up and designing projects where it will help me take my woodworking to the next level.
    Check it out for yourself, and if there is a particular test cut you want me to attempt, yell out!

    They are getting better and better. Nice review Mario!

      They really are, I remember seeing the first laser models of any brand on youtube a few years ago, it was either a wimpy laser strength, or a crazy huge price. Now we get power and price together, good stuff!

    I've been seeing these guys pop up everywhere and getting great feedback. Lasers seem to just keep getting better month to month.

      It's nuts isn't it? Almost where you don't want to buy one now, as in a months time a new one with new features will be on the market. 20watts minimum is the way to go though, much more fun and useful than the smaller models I had.

    I only just learnt yesterday (!) what offset fill is in Lightburn, so I think I need a lesson on it 🤣

    • @woodfather

      ahahha, I'll add offset fill into my 'mega test' that I'm planing for the laser, see if it looks better or burns any faster with it on 👍

    Hi, I have the same laser machine, that long thumb screw fits into the laser bracket on the left side, it is an additional locking screw for when you use the laser at high speed.

      Oh interesting, I just assumed it was what they were used to packing for other versions of the laser, so it kept getting thrown in there out of habit! I'll take a look next time I'm in the shop to see how it works. 👍

    Love the sleigh Mario, looks awesome! Have you tried making some box joins on it, it's pretty crazy! 😁

      There is only one true method of making box joints, and that is via Woodfathers Jig 😜
      lol nah I haven't yet, but this weekend I'm planning on playing with nice tight fitting tabs and spaces, the sleigh did work but it was a little loose. I need to go back over the design and see what I did wrong there.

    Watching this video, the only thing missing is one more certificate.
    The kit does look nice though.

      CERTIFICATE CERTIFICATE CERTIFICATE CERTIFICATE CERTIFICATE 😆 I imagine it's legal mumbo jumbo that they're required to include, but I can't say I've bothered reading them beyond the word "Certificate" on the top. 😆🤷‍♂️

    I have the Delta. They are really going for the high end quality with this amazing price! I am testing this one for a couple of months now and it is by far the best laser I have used. So fast

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes the Delta looks super interesting, I really like the lcd and usb part of it. I imagine it would be fantastic for home laser businesses, just click and burn, no computer required if you already have the design loaded.

      @@woodfather yeah the display is great too. Really happy with it. I’ll build a case for it next year to reduce noice and get rid of the smoke and a couple of extra features. Because it’s UA-cam and UA-cam is extra 😂🤣😂

    Hello, can it cut 3mm gold and silver acrylic. If it can, with what speed and power? At what speed and power do you cut MDF 3mm?
    I have the same one but I'm still learning :) Thanks

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  4 місяці тому

      My apologies I thought I had replied here. I've bought a bunch of coloured acrylic but i haven't had the chance to test cut them just yet. As I understand it, black acrylic is easy peasy, everything else is touch and go, darker colours are more likely to work than lighter ones. Once I give it a shot I'll report back. 👍

    AlgoLaser Alpha 22W vs Ortur Laser Master 3 22W
    Which one is the best you think?

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  4 місяці тому

      I've not used the Ortur LM3 so I can't give a fair opinion there. I did have the Ortur Laser Pro 2 which was only 10 or 5w, so I can say I much prefer the Algolaser build quality and setup as compared to that older one. I'm still having a great time with the AlgoLaser though, no issues there at all.

    One note that a lot of people overlook is the two aluminum couplers for the Y axis drive, the couplers need to be positioned so that *each shaft is only "grabbed" by that half of the coupler*. You should be able to see daylight in the slot where each shaft's position is ONLY in it's half of the coupler. Just don't slip it on and tighten, you need to make sure that when the shafts are "coupled", you can see the gap down the middle of the coupler. This way there is the ability to transfer the connecting rod motion WITH the slight bit of motion, (like a universal joint), so if there is any alignment issues, the couplers will allow transfer of motion without stressing the union.... (I used a feeler Gauge inserted in the slot and when each shaft hit the gauge, it was good to tighten)....

      Really interesting point. I certainly didn't know that was a requirement or a good idea even, thanks for the tip!
