Finally, a comparison video with reference prices. You could do a series with literally everything for a home, garage doors, cabinets, rim, drywall finishes, stucco, etc. that would be a golden collection of knowledge for homeowners designing their home.
Pricing is a joke.
Thank you so much Matt for talking pricing for these items. It's really nice to have somewhat of an idea on approx what these run.
Very welcome
Matt - more videos like these! This is awesome. Really appreciate the pricing for context. Excellent video!
It's great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan's ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.
Matt I was one of the 3 guys you met in L A at the Brewery!
Thank You so much for the invite back then!!!
Next time you need to have your folks publicize an Los Angeles appearance much better and have a much bigger meet and great!
You are one of the most humble guys in the trades I have ever met and liked how you spoke with us like we were just one of the guys and you checked out guys work and social media in order to lift them up!
This video is one of your best videos because of the large amount of information you and your sponsor for it provided to the viewers.
There is such a large audience for Building Science and QUALITY Building Products & Processes which builders in SoCalif just are not aware of the benifits, must in the business just think those practices are for the multi-million dollar homes. My daughter & SIL just had a $3million tract home built and it has many of your ideas, but clearly could use many more - in ALL aspects of home building. So many SoCalif Contractors types say, we don’t need to do THAT Here… it’s not that cold, wet, hot…
For the most part builders here don’t actually use ideas you teach because they cut costs everywhere they can!!!
Next time you come here to SoCalif, tell us sooner, do stuff like in this video and lets get a huge crowd of builders together that are ready to learn and grow in their endeavors!!!

Hey not sure what your prob is!!!
Fake account!!!
Great video but wish these price points were a bit more affordable. But thank you bringing this knowledge right to us in a digestible format. I am not a contractor but I am a homeowner, landlord and avid DIYer and this information has been priceless for me.
It’s so awesome to listen in on this conversation comparing features and pricing on a variety of competitive door choices in real time! Thanks to both of you for making this information happen!
Some may say that Matt gives people a window into building industries. I say he's knocking down the door!
Ha! Love it!
Wow! Matt, what a great presentation. I have never seen such a complete show room for doors and windows. Very informative. Thank you!
Architect / Builder here and loving this video, Matt! This is fantastic... touching on a lot of key details: weeps, price, construction, pg-rating... Need more of these!
I really like how you always ask "COST" that is important!
These videos are always so informative. I work in flooring. But, I love finding channels like this to build my knowledge across the industry
here in ontario canada, im so jealous you have these stores. so well equipped. stuck here with myriad of vendors and (mostly) sad box stores
Good to talk about price and I liked that you quickly made mention of whether some units were thermally-broken (every exterior unit should be IMO) but perhaps some mention of the overall efficiency? You spend a lot of time talking about building passive houses and being as airtight as possible - are these units just pretty or can they be used as part of a high-performance home?
It's aluminium separated by anything between 2 to 10 mm of foam which may not be that well insulating (rather focused on strength). Then again, just like vinyl frames, the profile is extruded in a way that it provides multiple boundary layers (how multiple glass panes work). Still the thermal break is not really complete and 2 mm thick aluminium all around is all you need for a massive thermal bridge. So despite the greater glass to frame ratio, the overall product performs with triple glass roughly the same as a basic (old design) double pane vinyl over here in Europe (if memory serves me correctly). Then again, the tested R/U values show mostly how the test performs, in the "wild" boundary layers play a role, so do occupants' habits, so as long as they seal alright and you really want them, it's all well... unless you mind paying more for less on the thermal side of matters. Those nice dark frames are better shaded from the summer sun, as there's a reason they don't come in vinyl (it would melt).
Glad he points out that the cost of these products are the just the products. You’ll need to take into consideration the additional materials labor etc. If adding a header to support those bigs doors, that brings the project up quite a bit.
Timely content DONE RIGHT on the BUILD SHOW!! greatly appreciated Matt!!
Sliding door, you can also install a floor gutter to divert any water
1:15 They start with reviewing *door systems* (with estimated pricing)
22:21 they move on to *windows*
I would like to see a video listing the various Passive certified windows and doors available in North America and an honest comparison of their designs rather than just saying that each option is a great choice (depending on price point).
For 15 k I'm putting in 12 ft of wall and a 3 ft door and buying myself a new motorcycle.
The Marvin is $1800 a foot I paid five grand for a 99 F250 with a 7.3 and a manual transmission you mean I can get a 3 foot door for that holy shit I’ll pass.
Decisions like that make for far lower resale value. Depends on your priorities I suppose.
Thanks for showcasing this BFS store in Mar Vista. It’s great to have a good builder store nearby.
If you weren’t broke you could buy both ❤
It's called being rich
I'm still amazed how little love Canadian fiberglass windows get. I paid way less for triple pane fiberglass windows from Accurate Dorwin and Inline than what I would have paid for American or European windows, and they have been great. An inline triple pane tilt-turn window was literally 3 times less than a Kolbe or Marvin tilt-turn, many of which were only available in wood, which review after review complained about rot. Marvin Essential feels darn cheap compared to Inline / Accurate Dorwin, which feel like a vault when you're shutting a tilt turn.
Can you even get those in the US? If you can't, it's not particularly relevant to the audience which is mostly from the US.... Matt has shown some Canadian projects, notably one IRC in Whistler, BC
Google’s reviews are bad for this company.
@@ckm-mkc no you probably cannot. As a Canadian I would love to see him have some Canadian people on the build show.
@@ckm-mkc Absolutely you can get them in the USA. I had them delivered to my home in Montana. I called both places, and the people who I was dealing with were infinitely more knowledgeable than the people who I was dealing with here in the US, and I was dealing directly with the factories, so custom was the name of the game. That's why I was recommending either company here. I just see Matt go super expensive for efficient European windows or with American windows that are just as expensive or more expensive but less efficient.
@@dpatru Which company? I used both and had a good experience with both. Go look at Green Building Advisor and the forums there for more information.
4:12 for typical multi slide doors like these, consider 2 inch depth for each door panel on the jamb, so 3 door panels = 6” deep jamb.
The average person has no idea how costly some of these doors are nor do they have the budget for them. Add to it HGTV where the renovation project costs are something like, “we got this 18 foot wide triple slide door for free because we found it outside a dumpster.” 😂😂
I must have missed the pricing info on windows. Price points are ok, how about some advice on how windows are priced next time Keep up the good content ! Thx!
Super helpful- I wish there was some info on screens with the sliders/bifolds. I know the wide open look is in, but screens are necessary to keep bugs and and other critters out- especially in southern california. This is a great store- will probably be buying my windows and doors here if they start carrying Weathershield.
Great job Carlos!
Love hearing both perspectives! I would call the other gentlemen fashionable and more of a sales/ showroom guy , mean while you have old boy Matt breaking it down step by step. Really good combo, would be a great personality trait if you ever add someone to your channel. Someone you can feed off of easily. This guy seemed a little nervous in front of camera but everyone can be like that at first. Keep it up brother!
Re: Anderson, an Anderson salesman told me they won't sell to builders of new homes. They only do retrofits.
Re: European windows, a German immigrant I knew had some windows imported for his home here. They were impressive. They swung in or out, could be cleaned from the inside by swinging in, super good insulation, heavy duty frame.
You're talking about Renewal by Anderson.
Absolutely EPIC video! As I look to replace a few windows and potentially 3 sliding patio doors this was infinitely helpful! Now I know that replacing my sliding doors will likely cost as much as my car! :)
Great video. So informative.
I bought an 8 foot wide, 6.5 foot tall, thermally broken, powdered coat aluminum clad exterior with prefinished wood interior, dual pane cardinal glass slider door for $3,000 dollars last year. The brand is Windsor. These prices are insane.
Big difference between n 8’ slider and these units with multiple sliders 15’
Btw I use Windsor a lot, great windows.
Good job Matt!
Quick way to determine if a window is single, double or triple pane, introduce the flame from a lighter in front of the glass and each pane will reflect a separate image.
This is awesome! Thanks for the tip.
@15:47 you’re talking about the pin-hole in the hinge mechanism. In Europe these are often used on hinges with pins as pivot points at the outside (no sure how to call these). When a intruder removes the pins on the outside they cannot remove or hinge the door to lift it out and thus enter the home without the key….
Really great show, as a serious window and door nerd, I approve!
Great video, very educational.
another great vid. Carlos was a very cool guy
What’s the life expectancy on these windows. I’m putting 192yr old windows in my current renovation. The quality is amazing, all vertical grain, 100% sustainably sourced when it lasts that long!
Very cool doors! These types of products are so pricey that combining with the cost of building nowadays would limit other more relevant home improvements such as upgraded insulation, sound proofed windows, and many others. Additionally these doors long-term would most likely perform poorly as a thermal insulator unless they have figured out new ways of keeping Argon from leaking.......
So informative!!! Thank you!
"One of the ell-ayy locations"... i finally know what accent Letterkenny was parodying LOL. Great video, great content, helpful, insightful, unique. Just had to get that first thought off my chest 😂
Awesome stuff Matt! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Hello another good video but I am surprised that there is no coverage on blinds for European windows. We still do need blinds on these windows and NO I am not referring to the rolling hurricane shutters they use in Europe on the outside. I am talking about blinds/shades that we can quickly operate to let light in with privacy or be completely closed for darkness and privacy. Can you shed any light on options and examples of what works in the US? Thanks.
Awww no price for the "commercial" one, or did I miss it?
Best video ever.
Great video!
Hi Matt, how do these "American" windows compare to the "European" ones? Thanks.
Not even close
Thanks for sharing your opinion. May I ask in what way are they better / worse?
In design and ergonomics plus they are tilt and fully open so its simple and smart design
Got it. I've been seriously looking at European windows. What window material (aluminum, uPVC, wood-clad) would be good for the Southern USA?
@@oldporkchops schuco windows from Germany one of the best
Finally! First time I see you do a West coast vid! But WTH with those sliding doors???? Not a single one has a screen - LA doesnt have insects? All this fancy stuff is pretty useless to us mortals.
Actually, o,mls doesn’t have insects most the year
That guy really knew his product lines.
Thanks Matt
Awesome video.
How do these compare to the German windows you featured in that waterfront home?
This is interesting, I hope that when I come to Canada, I will first assemble something similar, and then sell it...
Americans are so lucky to have no insects in the country.
In Japan, one only opens these doors once. Then all of the mosquitos and spiders make sure the owner remembers to keep these things closed. 😍😄
You didn't include pricing on the regular windows and doors. 😞
Out of those depicted, which would be best for Florida , wanting impact type.
You got any tips for dealing with insurance adjuster after a storm?
If leading to a deck, there could be a 1/2 inch gap to the deck, allowing the weeps to function?
twice i bought vinyl replacement windows , both times i am disappointed . lessoned learned , what do i need to keep NOISE out?
Double window. So you'll have two double paned glass windows. The airport expended near my house and they paid for them to be put in to everyones house. They work well.
Triple glass U0.5-0.9 or vacuum glass gets U0.4 but is more expensive
@@MarvinOsso "U" need to understand they asked about noise 🤭
They say laminated glass is very quiet. Windsor makes double pane with 2 dissimilar thickness glass pieces which they say helps cancel noise transmission
Tris was really excelent; as always
It would have been helpful to have prices on not only the most expensive doors
Windows and doors are a huge investment in your home all to often we build to expose our personal tastes in the finishing of our homes. We need to build with our energy consumption in mind and realize how much energy we loose through poor quality windows and doors the choice is yours. I believe our market will get to the point where prospective buyers will be looking for the better quality built home.
Standard building logic applies here: Avoid round/non-rectangular shapes, avoid organic materials on the exterior, go thermally insulative. After that, price will probably be the deciding factor.
22min in before you get to windows…. But I was looking for a door video anyways 😂 I need to replace my back door that has been causing leaks and now I get to replace floor joists, rim joist, top plate, flooring…. All because a budget box store door!!! You might save upfront but the end result is going to cost me well north of $1k per foot to fix!!!
Which chemical is used for waterproofing?
Just like This Old House, Matt started with humble remodeling for the everyman and gravitated to luxury projects for more $$$
22:10, thats a $20,000 slider.
That's not an uncommon slider in Southern California. A home with this slider to an indoor/outdoor space would easily sell for $50K+ more than one without one on a medium priced home in many markets.
in 2009 i bought an 8yr old 1300sqft house with attached 2 car garage & tile roof in a Phx suburb... for the cost of 3 of these patio doors...
i know that was an abnormal time, but c'mon. kept waiting to see an affordable window. shame on me for clicking on another of Matt's vids.
If you live in or around Denver, Co. dont waste your time going to the builders first source showroom here. Homedepot has a better selection
So touch & feel at big orange, then order from BFS...?
Every window has four numbers on a National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label on every window you'll consider:
o Solar heat gain - how much the window reduces the solar heat gain.
o U-value - how much heat transfer the window has at a given temperature differential.
o Air infiltration - how much air infiltration the window has.
o Visible light transmission
U-Factor
This number represents the heat transfer coefficient, or how much heat the window’s coatings help keep inside the home. The U-factor ranges from 0.1 to 1.2; the lower the number, the less heat escapes.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
This number measures how well a product keeps heat from the sun from penetrating the window. The range is 0 to 1. If you live in a hot, sunny climate, such as Arizona’s, you will want a low number to block out heat; if you live in a colder climate, you’ll want a high number to take advantage of whatever solar heat is available. If you live in a balanced climate, where winters are cold and summers are hot, you’ll want a solar heat gain coefficient rating of around 0.3 (the same goes for the U-factor). And you may want windows with different ratings for different parts of your house, depending on the direction the window faces and whether it gets a lot of sun or shade.
Air Leakage
This is how much outside air will come through the window frame, according to the NFRC’s testing. The lower the number, the better. (The range here is less than or equal to 0.1 to 0.3.) In our tests, we take this a step further by testing windows at very low temperatures with high wind conditions to see if there are any changes in performance due to materials expanding and contracting.
Also look at the installation warranty...is it longer than 2 years?
I had Marvin windows installed in my house 20 years ago. Impossible to purchase replacement weatherstripping, must have rep come out and order. Problem number two-windows may last only too find out replacement weatherstripping has been discontinued
Ouch, good to know thanks.
Aftermarket...
Lovely but prehistoric by European standards not one triple glazed on display and closure sealing is primitive Hey Matt how are you liking the unavailable Auralines
Which company offers the built in screen that can slide out ?
I love Alpen windows
SAME!!!
Very informative. Would love to find a similar showroom in Southern New England. Do all Builders FirstSource branches have displays of this caliber?
No, each location is different. Check out website for description of stores
What about impact resistance on these windows and doors?
Most of these customers purchasing $2000 per foot doors are gonna be living in coastal areas where hurricanes and/or tornadoes are an issue
Any opinion on Pella doors?
If you have you original wood windows in your old house you should restore them instead of replacing them. You'll never get your ROI after spending 20k+ on new windows.
Exactly, glass, seals. Then again, new hardware just works better.
Getting to we’re the rich are the only ones who can afford a good door and windows.
so good to have the pricing
Are there any sliding doors that has good insulation from noise?
Triple pain
Surprised there are no swiss or german made windows on display.
what is the best bang for the buck windows brand? I don't want tesla of windows I just want honda civic.
Could u send me a link to see what you’ve got from the gwn standpoint. Not Andersen hyper inflated price.
Can you tell me the model of the windoor. Folding door was.
Matt, I heard Yota come out of you when you got to the black vinyl folding door. haha
Great video.
Just curious, whats wrong with vinyl ?
Isn t it the strongest and most durable ?
@@NicholasWHaley7 compared to wood.
How long does vinyl last ?
I thought it lasts long, but maybe thats not right.
@@laurier3348 the other way around. Have you seen 50 or 100 year old plastic windows...or aluminium sliders for the matter....? And they had no overdone sheathing/cladding/sills like the modern ones, just bare minimum. Yes, ofc aluminium and composite have potential but wood is so simple stupid for windows (not so much doors), especially if you can DIY...
@@dushk0 Ok, thanks.
Thanks for pointing out the weep holes at the bottom and make sure not to cover them.
My house has 2 vinyl window that are chipped and cracked. It also has 19 wood windows that are over 100. However, the wood species for the windows is extinct.
Window and glass don't have the R- value a wall does. Keep them small and with multiple layers.
Like the Amish?
We want to see what the windows look like with screens and it seems to be impossible to find even photos showing that.
It would be nice if BFS would upgrade the Austin location like this
$2000 a foot for some these doors seems very steep even at a lineal ft is that just supply or installed? I have seen premium EU manufacturers doors at much less than that!
Serious question for the builders here.
Is it possible (practical) to have automated windows that can open and close automatically on a schedule or the weather report? For such windows something that tilts out would be fine, since the goal is to get some airflow instead of climbing through the window.
If they exist, where could I find them? If they don't, has anyone created a mechanism for automation?
As long as the costs make sense to you, I'm sure there are options...
Hello From Vietnam
Where are the inswing folding doors though? I got 2 10 wide 8 high openings between my kitchen and my (soon to be) greenhouse. If they swing in the whole assembly sits within the 2' thick stone wall area and doesn't interfere with the contents of my greenhouse...
No European made windows?
Would have loved to see some, or at least Alpen passive house series
Aluminium Cladded Vinyl window seem pretty good choice.
What about tilt and turn windows?
Matt, I've seen a lot of these window videos from you and I can't help noticing that none of the windows you show have storm windows on them, even on windows at job sites (nor do I remember seeing you use storm doors come to think of it). Is this just a regional thing, because many houses where I live in northern Michigan have storm windows, or is there another reason you don't show windows with storm windows?
I have lived in Texas for more than 40 years and I can assure you that while builders don't include storm windows or doors, many people have added storm windows or doors depending on their situation. But storm windows are typically taken down and thrown out as people upgrade from single glazed windows to more energy efficient double glazed windows.
@@sa3270 up north storms are used more to seal the air infiltration rather than the glazing
Short answer, you don't need "storm windows" with modern, properly specified/code compliant windows/doors.
@@mark52111 I'll keep my storms WITH my quality windows
ProVia has vinyl in black, so it would be great if you could not cater to the big brands that are soaking people, and talk a bit about brands that are selling great, efficient products. ProVia finds it very easy to surpass Andersen's energy ratings, and it happens to be one of the windows that we take out because they are rotten.
Why does UA-cam keep feeding me this guy. He is not talking about stuff regular people can afford.
Most people can aid the entry level Andersen, Marvin, JELD-WEN etc
How in the world is $1200 per foot absolutely insane
You would probably say the same after looking at what's parked in their multi car garage
