I'm a chemist for a major electric utility. I oversee ultrapure water production for our steam generators. We use clarifiers, multimedia filters, reverse osmosis and finally 2 electrodeionization systems to remove virtually everything except the hydrogen and oxygen. Our silica levels are usually below 2 ppb and sodium is usually 0.2 ppb. In my camper is use the stock filter, because unless you're making steam it's probably good enough for human consumption ;)

I have been in the filtration industry for 45 years and continue as a filtration expert consultant. I have been involved with the development of most of the filtration technologies used today. This includes basic filtration, carbon filtration, Reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, ion exchange and adsorptive filtration in the commerical and residential markets. The only technology that will remove TDS is RO, ion exchange or some type of adsorbtive or chemical techology. I have patents in the use of adsorbtive filters in removing and capturing viruses. Too many of the systems being pushed on consumers today is an expensive overkill. In most cases a simple two stage system cosisting on and efficent prefilter and high quality carbon filter is more than adaquate to give you safe good tasting water. City water is safe in most conditions, best the taste and quality can be improved with a simple filtration system. Don't overpay for what you don't need.

Making a video about water filtration always brings the grumpy troll experts out. Everything that WZ said could be learned from a simple google search and doesn’t take higher education to understand. His self inflated ego is a big no no if you’re trying to actually educate folks on water.
TDS is indeed a measure of how soft your water is and that’s why it tastes better to you. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, imo. Great video!

People need one of these meters to see what they are actually consuming with their home water source. I purchased a house 3 years ago and used this meter to test the well water prior to making offer on the house, luckily my well has better water than any house I have owned previously. Also took it to my Mom's house to show her why she needs to avoid consumption of her municipal water. It is interesting to get samples from around the house (kitchen/bath/exterior hose bibs/filtered refrigerator dispenser) and see the difference

As a prior salt water aquarium owner - tds is not a good test to be checking for “good water” as you mentioned in your video, tds is total dissolved solids - which is your minerals.
To get pure water you need a reverse osmosis system (which removes “most” stuff in your water. To remove everything - rodi is needed - reverse osmosis deionizing resin filtering. This is what makes ZERO tds water for salt water aquariums and is not safe to drink long term - due to no minerals which are needed for the human body. Rodi water is used in salt water aquariums as it strips everything out of the water so you can add salt mix to it- which ads in the minerals needed to make a fish and or reef aquarium so it can thrive and feed everything with the correct nutrients.
The best testing for water safety is one of many you can order online where you send in samples and they test everything under the sun to give exact minerals, funk, bacteria and other bad things. Cost a bit to do but worth it to do on your main source of water at least once.

Been cross country RVing and water quality in RV parks is almost always low. We bring bottled water with us for drinking and won’t use an RV park’s water w/o filtering it. We use Camco Hydro Life filters, they are a little pricey but they do a great job.

Thank you for this video. We just purchased an RV and are trying to figure out the best way to filter water. I, too, am no water expert but I felt a need to share what my doctor recommends as far as clean drinking water. He says reverse osmosis (RO) water is the best way other than distilling water to remove the harmful things that are in our tap water. I have been drinking RO water for years now and have only seen health improvements, not a decline in my health. That's saying something since I am now 70 years old. Here's why I choose to drink RO water. Most of the water in the US has a calcium to magnesium ratio where the calcium is higher than the magnesium. This is not good for your health and leads to too much calcium and not enough magnesium in the body. You need the magnesium to help the calcium get to where it needs to go and to regulate it. The correct ratio should be 1:1. Many vitamin supplements have two parts calcium to 1 part magnesium and this, too, is incorrect. The confusion began, according to Dr. Carolyn Dean, when a French study was translated into English and somehow in the translation, the fact that the correct ratio of calcium to magnesium should be 1:1 was confused with the statement that the ratio of calcium to magnesium should never be more than 2:1. The difference being that the ideal is 1:1 but that you should never have more than 2:1 was confused with the correct ratio being 2:1. Many locations have water that surpass even the 2:1. This leaves you with not enough magnesium which I believe is a real problem in the US. So, to my way of thinking, it is much better to pull out all the minerals than to have the incorrect balance or minerals in the water and to have minerals that you don't actually need like copper and iron. Yes, we need minerals but it is much better to supplement the minerals you need individually via testing. What my doctor does is monitor my mineral status through both blood tests and hair mineral analysis. It's taken a long time but my mineral status continues to improve with each testing and I am feeling better for it. At 70 years old, I no longer have arthritis and I am fortunate not to be on any medications. Drinking water seems to be a controversial topic and I would say do whatever makes you the healthiest. But I have found that by drinking RO water and supplementing the minerals my body actually needs is working much better for me. I think the ball drops when you drink RO water and do not put back the correct minerals. The trick is finding a doctor who actually understands this and who teaches you how to monitor your symptoms to know roughly what minerals you need and what minerals you no longer need to supplement. Then with regular testing, you can see if you are on the right track. By drinking mineral water, you might be getting more of certain minerals that you don't need and less of the ones you do creating an imbalance. Relying on mineral water for our mineral status can turn out to be problematic. So my ideal filtering system for our RV would be RO water. We plan to filter the water coming in to our storage tank and would like to have a UV light to kill off bacteria. RO water cannot be guaranteed to remove all bacteria so you will need a UV light to do that. Then before actually drinking the water and using it for cooking, I will use my RO water filter as a final step. We have a countertop AquaTru which is what we have been using for several years now. I'm not looking forward to sacrificing my very limited countertop space to the AquaTru but the benefits we get from using it are worth it. From what I can tell, many campers are using a Berkey water filter for their drinking water and although we have one, I choose not to use it because it leaves the minerals in the water. I find it much more cumbersome to use than the AquaTru and I just saw a UA-cam video by someone who tested the water coming from a Berkey water filter and discovered, much to his surprise, that the filter was actually adding aluminum to the water. Well, that can't be good! So I would have to disagree with the expect on water filtration in this one regard and I prefer RO water. To be on the safe side, I think I will stick with my AquaTru. I hope this helps people understand both the need to filter their water and to give them a different perspective on RO water.

Great job, note the key is TDS = total dissolved , your meter was likely reading just the hardness in water which is dissolved and filter will not remove it. Think about it this way your water heater or coffee maker will get the hardness to fall out of suspension without a filter. Filters will remove particles that’s not dissolved like sand, again partial size or micro size the filter membrane states. Carbon filters will help with chlorine in water.

Disclaimer: This is by no means is medical or health advice.
I watched this video through the discussion about the gentleman’s comment. I also was a former licensed water distribution operator in my respective state and although his information is accurate, it was conveyed in a condescending and overstated manner. He should have added distilled water in the discussion with RO filtered water and what proper remineralization would look like.
In short, his overstated concern is exceptionally unlikely to occur, although it could. Nearly everyone consume more than enough minerals to compensate and I don’t know a single person that only drinks water.
If they did only drink water, they would likely know a lot about water, consume healthy foods containing said minerals, and understand the importance of electrolyte balance. I’m not questioning his credentials because he absolutely does know what he’s talking about; he merely overstated it to an audience without the same knowledge base to toot his own horn.
Many of my friends have used distilled water in a very controlled manner to make water weight cuts for competitive weight lifting and combat sports. This is not the rocket science that he made it out to be. If you deplete your minerals and electrolytes, then you need to replace them. Ole boy need a chill pill.
I have no desire to see who can urinate further so to speak. I’m one and done with this comment. Do your own research.

First let me say that I do not consider myself a" Professional " in the water purification
    industry.
That being said, I am not a "Noob" either.
Carbon filters will help with taste.
If you want to lower the TDS, add an RO ( Reverse Osmosis) filter after the Carbon filters.

Coke and Pepsi use R/O water to make there product taste the same thru out the country, so when the water craze came along they just started bottling it. As far as the minerals vs heavy metals ,the whole idea is to clean the contaminates out and put back certain minerals for taste. Aquafina does not and Dasani does. The TDS meter needs to be calibrated before use.🤔 Hope this helps. PS lots of municipal water dept use RO water filtration.

Hi BTBR, I'm no water expert either, but I do know minerals can add to parts per million, PPM. So your thinking that higher parts per million means more contaminants are in the water isn't accurate. You can take Distilled water, which should have a PPM of 0 and add your own minerals and change the PPM.

If it ever becomes possible I would like to see a review of the Blu Technologies R3 water filtration system vs the Clearsource Ultra. I have the Ultra as well but the new Blu Tech R3 looks very interesting especially how much more compact it is than the Clearsource if it is able to filter the water as well or better than the Clearsource Ultra.

another really good this is to test the ph balance level. ph is really important to allow your body to absorb nutrients in your body. should be around 8.5 ph or so range to be best. You don't want high alkaline water. Nestle actually is the best bottles water for alkaline and that is pretty cool because it came is 2nd always in your testing.

The problem with bottled water is that it is stored in plastic bottles. Over time that will alter the flavor. I bet the nestle and aqua taste different if you could get them out of a tap before it goes into a bottle.

    None of these three stages
    will impact significantly
    on dissolved Iron,
    dissolved Calcium,
    nor dissolved Magnesium.
At the levels where HARD water becomes problematic,
    that treatment requires different equipment,
& a different process (or two).
Thus the "Dissolved Solids" (electrolytes ?) meter is
the pretty-much WRONG tool to use to measure the
effectiveness of of these three filter stages.
Water softening is the removal of
calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations
    in hard water.
If (& only if) you really need it,
    reverse osmosis membranes,
    can soften-water.
    Washing soda (Na2CO3) can work,
as can Ion exchange resin organic polymers.
Remember reverse Osmosis wastes (?) a lot of water.
Another point, that NEW hose will leach plasticisers.
Plasticizers for plastics are additives, often phthalate esters.
    (esters of polycarboxylic acids ?).
Bisphenol A (BPA); an organic synthetic compound
and related compounds are often used in bottles, tanks, hoses, & pipes,
made of, or lined with, polycarbonate plastics.
    Another BPA Example;
epoxy resins derived from BPA are used to line water pipes.
    BPA is a xenoestrogen,
    exhibiting estrogen-mimicking, hormone-like properties
and really you should flush that hose through very thoroughly,
    before drink water from it.
In 2017 the European Chemicals Agency concluded that BPA
should be listed as a substance of very high concern
due to its properties as an endocrine disruptor
(so rinse the hose out THOROUGHLY before drinking the water !!).

Hey BTBRV. I have a question could you look at some of the Gooseneck flatbed trailers from different manufacturers and tell me why they have similar architecture like PJ trailers looks like a Big Tex trailers and Texas pride trailers looks like a Proline trailer. Which leads me to believe one or two manufacturers are making one to two copies for everyone else. If so Is there really any difference in any of them?

Maybe the commenter was not 100% accurate as he thought he was about RO maybe he was referring to "18 megohm water also known as Ultra Pure Water" aka UPW, which is so pure that if drank consistently or often can actually pull out minerals from your body which could cause major health issues. The purity is why it is widely generated and used in the semiconductor industry.
Water filtered or treated by RO is pure, clean, and healthy. RO treatment system is currently the only technology that can remove most of the emerging contaminants (i.e., prescription drugs and perchlorate) including other contaminants (i.e., Arsenic, Cyanide, and Fluoride) that are difficult to remove by other treatment methods. No more ingesting of harmful inorganic minerals means the body will no longer be stressed with trying to absorb something that wasn't supposed to be there in the first place (Wise, 2011). Consumers should not be concerned about the removal of minerals by RO system. WHO (2009) and WQA (2011) pointed out, that the human body obtains vast majority of minerals from food or supplements, not from drinking water.

As far as water quality, allow the scientist determine water quality. The true test is taste and if you like it. Filtration of suspect water may make you feel better but then some micro organisms can pass through the filter. Water treatment plants add chlorine to sanitize and fluoride (jury is out on this mineral). Again how does it taste to you is the best judge of water treatment equipment. I personally will use an activated charcoal filter to help remove the chlorine taste.
