Tip when working on plumbing lines like this - especially when you have as many lines going as Chad and Tara do - use a labeler (such as a P-Touch) and label the lines as to what they are. Later down the road if you have an issue, having those labels will often times remind you what was done and allow you easier repairs, plus anyone that is helping you will have a far better understanding because the lines are labeled. Super, super informative video with a huge wealth of information as always - thank you Chad and Tara for that!

Labeling is always good, I can't think of how many times I went back to something and my first thought was "Now what the hell did I do here again?" lol

The p-touch is a solid recommendation but to go further, slip clear shrink tube over it. The label glue always seems to give up just before I need to read the label. :)

Get yourself a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter to measure when your filters need replacing and the overall effectiveness. I installed a Apec 5 stage reverse osmosis system for my parents, which took their incoming water from 160ppm to 4ppm.

We're snowbirds and use a Beech Lane $65.00 Two filter system (5 micron and 0.5 micron) and only use the tap water for washing dishes and showers. Any water that we drink, cook with, make coffee with or otherwise put in our mouth is store bought. We can buy a lot of water for the $750 it would cost to buy the Clear Source system plus a Berkey.

We have the ultra and the water tases great. If we go longer than three months we don’t notice the change until we replace the filter’s then we say should have changed earlier.

From my experience if you want truly safe water from a micro perspective UV light is the way to go. All the other filters are great but basically what I would consider cats and dog filters. They filter out all the big stuff but really don't do a very good job on the microbiology aspect. Just my opinion after 32 years in beverage manufacturing and food safety.

You're back!! :) Hey, do yourself a HUGE favor and pick up the DEIONIZING Filter Cartridge kit from Clearsource. Our RV has full body paint and when using this kit there is NO need to race to wipe the water off the RV after washing. Not one water spot when using this filtration kits. Oh...also great for the truck and your motorcycle. Now ClearSource has their NOMAD filter, which allows you to pull water from any source (ie..river..lake). So cool for us boondockers.

I use a two filter system with a 5 micron and 1 micron carbon/particulate filters followed buy a whole house UV filter. Down side is the UV filter pulls 5 12v amps 24/7. Upside is I have clean water everywhere with no living bacteria. It filters going into the tank when I fill it and filters again when it comes out.

On the on wheeled skateboard. With proper head gear, the next weakest link are the wrists and elbows as they absorb most of the energy from a fall and the wrists are truly a weak part of the body. Wrist braces and elbow pads will save you from potentially somewhat serious injury and worth the trouble of getting and wearing them.

For $170 more I went with a 20 gallon per hour (500 gallon per day) reverse osmosis system which i use to fill my freshwater tank. Now my water is also spot free so our shower and fixtures don't have mineral build-up.
It also provides spot free rinse when I wash my rig so I don't have to dry it. Saves me hours!!!!!!
And it would delete the need for your Berkeley
My water is the same a purified bottled water at a fraction of the price.

Great video. One thing I recommend is to run some water out of the faucet at the campground or where ever you are going to hook up. I have seen some realey ugly stuff come out. I would rather have it on the ground than in my filter. I often use one of the cheap blue Camco filters as a pre filter.

I noticed a couple things in that Mfg Video and it may answer one of my questions regarding loss of flow. When using the competitors two carriage system the pump is cycling telling me the resistance of the filters is high enough for the pressure sensor to shut the pump off, but with the three carriage system the pump flows the water evenly. This tells me flow is not being hindered and the water is clear. All of this is good. I am sure it would perform much better than my single Cartridge system, just need to figure out where it might fit.
Also noticed Tara's t-shirt, she is one year younger than my wife, assuming born in 1959. Love your videos, Chad and I think alike when it comes to the mechanics of these systems.

  • @stevenscott4096

FWIW, we installed residential filter systems for several years. You don't need to change the media until you get a pressure drop at your faucets. That skanky, nasty looking filter is actually doing a better job of filtering than it did when it was new. The other thing is with the activated carbon filter. If you start to get smells or odors, time to change it. Good just to keep a set on hand and change them when needed rather than have to wait until they get delivered. I bought this system a few months back, but we recently got our 397. I plan on stealing your bypass idea. Might even steal the ceiling mount. I was wondering where to install ours. Didn't really want them in the way in the basement. Thanks for the video. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas.

I just order the same one you bought from Clearsource. I received a $25 discount using your link!! I have had their water softener for about a year and it has helped a lot. Most RV parks have well water which usually is very hard water and causes uses with all RV equipment if you do not take preventive action. Example; water heater, washer, and water lines get calcium build up from hard water. Enjoy all the information you provide!
    Thank you!☺

Clearsource filters are great. Their housing is too expensive for what it is. You can get a housing for less than half the price and they’ll fit the clearsource filters into them. The filters are a standard size.

Been using my Clear Source Ultra for about 9 months now and love it !! Started using it on day one when we got our new 5th wheel and went fulltime RVing. We were also using a berkey for our coffee and tea water. I honestly don't think the Berky is really necessary with the Clear Source Ultra.

There are other inserts that work that well (Former NASA rocket scientist) I built equivalent system for $125. The FIRST filter needs changing far more often than the others
The Birkey is an excellent ion exchange system. It exchanges sodium (Na+) for other metals (Ca++, Mg++ etc).
The BEST way to purify water is by distillation. This removes EVERYTHING. It saves descaling coffee makers (Kuerig and the like). Distilled water is best for humidifiers on sleep apnea machines and other medical devices.

Great video. In our home we use a 5 micron, and 1 micron filter, then our third stage is a Brita filter. I am fairly sure our water is at least "good", as opposed to "great". I do like the idea of the virus guard as well at the kitchen sink. Perhaps I'll add one this winter. That said, our cottage on Georgian Bay (off Lake Huron) had an Artesian well, and the local water there was/is apparently well know for being one of the purest sources in Canada.

I assembled a 3 filter canister unit. it was a fraction of the cost of a preassembled three unit filter. My filter unit is portable and separate from the RV because I want to take the pressure drop before my pressure regulator and thus maximizing my RV water pressure. its more trouble that building it in but I sacrifice that for the higher water pressure. good video.

It is external in a tub and it is almost as good tasting as bottled water. We have only been changing the filters every 6 months but based on the video I guess we should be at least checking the filters every 3. Thank you for the video.

I recently added the Acuva 2.0 UV water drinking filter that ensures there is no virus/bacteria when using water from my fresh water tank while boondocking. The Clear Source, at least on my rv, isn’t in line with the water from the fresh water tank to protect me.

Great video. I have been hoping that you or someone as knowledgeable about what they were doing would put in a 3 filter system. We own a small farm. Our water is supplied by a well, our pump is at 115' depth. We currently have NO filtration on our system. BAD ME, but in my defense, we are getting NO sand in the toilet tanks. Now I know that says nothing about all the other little gremlins we could have in the system. That is why I am wanting to install a filter system. Our well is topped by a concrete room that extends about 8' into the ground. In the 11 years we have lived here the water out there has never frozen, the water lines are located close to the floor of the room, which puts them close to 6' below the surface. The well has a flat top lid with enough angle on it so that water does not pool on top. the lid is also insulated with 7.5" of closed cell foam insulation. My wife says that I over engineer everything that I build! :-) At any rate, I can see enough in this video to install a good filter system, adapting the system to remove what contaminates are known to be in this area, plus I will be getting a full checkup on our water before putting in the filters, so that I will know exactly what I need to be filtering out of our water. The bypass is a great addition as well. Many thanks! I am very pleased to see another video from you two, but take it slow, at YOUR speed. You know best when you will be able to jump back into video production. I am sure that all of you followers also want you not to burn out!

  • @jamesbitb

Great info and I could see this as a perfect system for full timer, I don't believe it is worth the investment for part timers like ourselves. The center filter is what I am using in the Grand Design built in filter system (activated coconut charcoal). Good enough for the RV water system as long as you are using potable sources. We used to use a brita filtration system, and actually moved to using 5 gallon water jugs for our drinking water needs. As part timers it is a great way for us to reduce waste (no plastic bottles) and know we have good drinking water for our trips and the costs when trading in for a new bottle are minimal.

Hey Chad, I'm finally getting ready to install mine and watched the video again. How often do you need/use the bypass loop? I get wanting to be able to shut off flow on both sides of the filters, but why would you ever want to bypass the filters? Thinking of leaving the bypass off mine. Any concerns you think I should consider? Thanks?

I put them in bypass when changing the filters and figured it would just be good to have if there were ever a canister crack or leak. But that has never happened and I can change the filters in about 5 minutes.. So, it's not really necessary.

Great video. I have looked at these systems and wondered if they really worked. We are not full-timers in the rv and have not seen how cost-effective it would be at this time. Chad…saw you use clamps…have you tried Shark bites? If so did they not work? I am using them in home repairs even where freeze might occur and having great success.

Thanks for the install suggestions, we have the same unit, but in the free stand style. Changed our filters at three months and they were just about as bad as your six month filters.

First off how's Tara's noggin, that cut looked nasty. I hope she's feeling better and Merry Christmas to both of you. As for the filter system it looks pretty good. There's another one out there that claims about the same specs but it's twice the cost. Guess which one I'm going to buy. Keep the good stuff coming guys and I hope Tara's feeling better.

I would to see an update on the MorRyde IS Suspension system and the disk brake upgrade. Problems, anything you would have done differently. Doing this upgrade November 2022.

The IS has been awesome! I plan on re-packing bearings and giving an update early next year.
