- It is in my nature to push the limit on equipment but we overloaded our mill this time. Most of the time, we push our equipment up to the limit, but not over the limit. I pushed the OS23 Frontier Sawmills over the limit by sawing up a log which was to big. We strait up overloaded our mill. About 3 inches to big. It created a lot of extra work in which I had to do unsafe things. We also worked the TYM Tractors T474 to its limit but not over. I am having the rear tires loaded this week, so watch out. All in all, this log had amazing rewards, but I will never do it again. Tony

You said if we saw something that you are doing wrong to let you know.
If you want to keep your blades sharp when you are milling. Always clean the mud off the side of the log that the blade is entering. Also when milling green oak you really don't have to run any water on the blade. It actually makes it cut harder.

I have some lovely Cherry for the sawmill.
I ise cable and chains on this situation.
You can get on the dry and pull the logs where you can get them without cutting them up.
It doesn't matter in my case. The logs are to big for my mill. They have to be cut up anyway. The Oak cut down size was to the max of my tractor too. I will stay away from trees this big, unless I get a bigger mill. Thank you for watching and the ideas.
I don't see many on here using the Echo saws. I love my CS-520... had it a long time and it's never failed me.
My buddy who is a Echo dealer twisted my arm. I have loved my Timberwolf ever since.
In watching several different millers, I noticed some use their backs to likt and turn the cant and some use their weight to roll the cant. If you pull down with the cant hook you are using your weight, if you are lifting the cant hook you are using you back. As a sufferer of back problems I now use my weight to do as much work as possible. Here is wishing you many years of back health.

If you cut up from the bottom 3 or 4"s while it's up in the air then set it down on the ground you won't have to take a chance of getting in the dirt.put a block underneath helps as well.i drilled a hole in two 4x4s n put some rope on it to carry anywhere you want on the tractor.my Kubota had a bar for the loader n I just threw them over that.always will me.very beautiful wood.need to show your wife's stuff that she's doing w this wood.good stuff buddy.
We are going to build some cool stuff in the spring. I can't wait for better weather. It has not snowed, but it has been so wet and messy.

I know you are excited to get your mill. What do you have in Montana for wood? We have Red Oak, White Oak, Pine, Hickory, and tones of Poplar. Many other trees species, but It would take days to name them all. I am just learning the basics here. There is so much to learn, but it is fun!
Nice video, and it shows that the mill was up to the challenge, once you got the log trimmed. I've been in similar situations, and the one thing I've learned is that no matter how big your mill is, you WILL push it to the limit. You say you won't do it again, but I'll bet you a blade that within a year you will. Keep making sawdust & I'll keep checking in on you.

The reward was great, but the risk was to high. I will back down a bit on size.
I have cut a few 23-24” 16’6” long on my OS23 for barn siding. Lot of trimming and it’s slow. My brother runs an LT50 hydraulic and suggested I wedge the cuts on the wide cants and it seems to help take a little pressure off the blade.
It is tough work.

I bought the OS23 because most of our Timber is 20 inches or less. Once I got the mill everybody wants to give me larger logs

Man that was heck of a log.that was a lot of log for that little mill great lumber.now that was a great log when I worked in logging the largest log I cut was 6' at the but.great job with your mill.
It was a big log. That seems like a life time ago. Keep an eye on the channel. We just put a 14HP engine on this sawmill. It is a monster now.
The four feet section will still make some nice short lumber

Hello sir, thank you for the videos I really enjoy them! One thing I wanted to suggest is about your hydraulic line for the grapple. When you were hauling the log out and on the road it was dragging with the bucket curled up. Don't want to see it catch on a root or anything. I know you need the hose length to curl the bucket down. Maybe a bracket can be made to stop it from hanging. Or even just a bungy cord for now. Just trying to help, thanks again and keep the videos coming take care.

I have a os27 I sawed few years with original engine I put a 20hp Honda engine on and power feed made it a whole different mill

The first blade had already cut a few logs up, but OAK is tough.
Make slow cuts and keep the water turned up to cool the blade. Sure turned out some pretty wood. Would make beautiful flooring. New sub from Ga. 👍🇺🇸

@@TonysTractorAdventure Lots of rain here in Ga. I have some big Long leaf Pine to Mill. Cut green off and old Farm . I have the 620p Echo saw. I just enjoy it. No issues.
I decide how long I want my log, then cut it. If there is a limb in the way, I cut it even with the log. If tractor can't carry it, I drag it with a chain. I never give up my desired lumber length.
I am limited by the sawmill to its biggest cut widths.
Speaking of doing something wrong. It's good that you have the helmet with the screen, but safety glasses are still needed as wood chips, etc. can fly through that screen.

Yeah those sawmills are meant for light duty use and I agree that log was way to big for it.
Looks to be vaneer quality logs if they are cherry as you said, i believe they would fetch $10,000 or more per log. Something to look into.
They are Black Cherry. I don't know anywhere around here offering that much. These trees are standing everywhere.
That was a heavy stick of wood! When you picked it up whole, I could tell it took all the weight off the rear tires, even with that heavy backhoe on! Stout machine.

I would think you could have gotten the entire log out by backing up to it, setting the outriggers and pulling it out with a chain using your backhoe
It was too much for the tractor. No sense in taking a chance in ripping off an outrigger for a log.

The engine on that bogs down more than I thought it would after the log was narrowed. Seems like it could use a few more ponies. I am looking at the 31" model but 14hp seems super low. Beautiful log.
So many variables. Type of wood, blade sharpness, how wet the wood is, etc. The OS series sawmills, are not professional production mills. They cut well, but they will never be a production mill. They are great for home use, homesteading, furniture grade lumber sorce, and small farms. Any kind of production mill is going to be in the $30,000 + range. I have thought about putting a bigger engine on mill at some point.

@@TonysTractorAdventure the entry cos is low enough to allow of upgrades for sure. The other saw I am looking at is the hud-son but it is $6500 for a 36".
Mud is a real challenge. Frozen ground is so much better except when the log is frozen into the mud. I think you should be slower in lowering the grapple when starting to haul your log. You were still lowering the log when your began your turn. With the backhoe hanging off the back and the load still partially up your center of gravity may be higher than you think. Making any turn when your load is high is risky. If on a slope it can be way too easy to lay your rig on its side. Further, if you are moving heavy loads in hot weather lowering the load should be done slowly so as to avoid sucking air past a cylinder seal, setting the stage for a diesel like explosion with air being compressed over hot hydraulic fluid, possibly bending your cylinder rod. Not a likely, but, possible and expensive. Beautiful grain in your results. Thank you.

It's hard to walk away from logs like that. I get them up on the mill and do chainsaw surgery like you did. Did not notice any stress on you log bed even though that log was over weight for the mill specs. You trailer is letting you go heavier. I just take it slow, watch the blade plain, and never overburden the saw head.

They are made to take a load. I have put a 2000 plus pound on the mill.
Look like you could put a chain around the log and hook it to the back hoe and gradually move it out of the hole. Choice oak for your Sawmill.
I almost knocked the mill over once. I am not as eager to push or pull the mill anymore.
why didn't you measure the log cuts before you made the first cut to lighten the load
Because, at the time of making this video, I had no idea what I was doing! Still learning. We all knew nothing at one point in our life.

I bought the 7hp version and then later upgraded to a 14hp engine.

I cut a lot of hard wood with the 7hp. It was a bit slower. I would would buy the OS31 if I had it to do over. A lot of bigger trees are left behind.

Tony you can lift a lot more with forks. The grapple is very heavy and cuts down on you lifting capabilities. Give it a try.
I don't agree. My grapple weight is 260 pounds. It is specifically made for small tractors. My forks are 180 pounds. I would much rather give the 80 pounds up and have the flexibility of the grapple. In many cases people buy the biggest grapple they can find reducing the tractors ability to lift. It is very important to buy the correct sized grapple for the tractor.👍
@@TonysTractorAdventure I agree with you on that. Im one of the ones that bought the huge root grapple. I think it weighs around 840 pounds. So the forks work for me. I have a Massey Ferguson 2705 tractor with just under 50 Hp. I use the grapple for cleaning up limbs and just general property clean up. I’m here in Northwest Arkansas just under Blue Eye Mo. I also have Norwood hd36 v-2 sawmill with hydraulics. It’s fairly new for me.
I really like that Norwood sawmill. It was out of my price range at the time.

You can’t upload anything it seems like. I have to use my phone and go up to the pasture to get signal to upload. We’re down in a hole here in the Ozarks.

I was nervous with sitting that big of a log with the tractor, it was really tweaking your mill. Good video though.
The sawmill is rated for it. I built the trailer for it to. It is stronger than a factor trailer. I dropped a log one time and almost turned the sawmill over. Never to old to learn.
Hey, I'm looking to get the OS23. What size motor do you have? Do you like your saw and how is the customer service?
All my questions have been answered buy customer service. I have the 7.5 hp and it cuts well. The bigger engine will let the saw cut a bit faster, but I am happy! I would buy it again.
I have had zero breakdowns in thousands of board feet.

I will say most of my " big" ones are roughly 24" or less. I just don't want to have buyers remorse. Like shooting a buck and the antlers shrink on you. Lol
How long it take you to make one pass through that log?
There are several parts of the video at normal speed. I never timed it. I would guess 60 seconds or less.

Did you calculate the weight of the log? Just curious what it estimated out to be.
Brad, I put it in the calculator just now and it shows just over 2900 pounds as I was driving down the road. It shows it as just over 2000 pounds when I set it on the mill.
@@TonysTractorAdventure I know it looked really heavy. The tractor did a good job dealing with it (the operator did also).
I felt good with it and was ready to drop the load.

It does better on yards, gravel, and blacktop. Everything has tradeoffs.
It’s a shame, if you had measured sooner you would have had more mill wood.
It doesn't matter. I am learning hand have thousands of logs. If you have cut logs, then you have messed up at some point.
You had all the power you needed, but did not seem to use it, or that tractor muffler works above average, , your main problem seemed to be traction, , I am assured you already knew that. lololol
The problem was the log was to big for the sawmill. The tractor was fine.

La bûche était trop grosse pour la scierie, mais elle l'a coupée. Ce n'est pas une scierie de production. J'ai pensé à faire évoluer le moteur.
