Awesome job with the videos . My Dads side of the family is from new Mexico since the 1600s . Suprising DNA results for me showed that we are actually a little Spanish and mostly native . Amazing how older new Mexico mestizos cling on to this "mostly spanish " concept. It's time to start celebrating our native roots .

I’ve met many New Mexicans and almost all look mestizos. I’m also a mestizo, family central Mexico, and I honestly can’t tell the difference between Mexican or New Mexican people, I think we are the same or very similar. All new Spain was basically mostly mestizo!

Rob Martinez, thanks for calling a Spade, a Spade, with reference to U.S. President Polk's Land Grab of the Great
Southwest, based on a flimsy excuse !! It was almost as controversial as Putin's Invasion of Ukraine !!
My relatives were in New Mexico, over 300 years ago so I have a special place in my heart for this area !!
Mexico's worst mistake was to allow Americans to settle in our country and they, then decided to land grab !!

Great video rob, can you do a video on the odd and rare New Mexican first names? One of my great uncles was named Hilario and I’ve noticed odd first names being a common thing in many New Mexican families

    • @M10-i6b

Those names were not odd up to 40 years ago in actual Spain. They were normally passed on from generation to generation, nowadays all that has changed. In some rural areas they still keep the custom.

Spanish man here. I have a different history from most of us. My family left Spain and arrived in Florida in the 1800's. When the USA took over Florida most Spanish people left and went to Cuba. My family ended up getting taken in by the Choctaw and becoming a part of the tribe. There are records to confirm that the Choctaws took in a lot of Spanish. When the Choctaw got removed from tribal land, we went with them. We got relocated to Indian Territory. In 1907 Indian Territory gets turned into a state called Oklahoma. They had tribal members sign the roll so that they could be members of their tribe. My family says that we're not amerindian. We're Mexican. We didn't sign the roll. After Oklahoma becomes a state we marry white women from northern European descent and some from purely Spanish descent. After several generations, we no longer look mestizo. Then my father gets adopted by a white family with an English last name. This changes our last name from a Spanish name to an English last name. I was born in a small town in Oklahoma, close to a reservation for the Seminole tribe. The town was majority white northern European. There was one other kid in town who was half Mexican and half white northern European. We became best friends. My mom had a sister who was married to my dad's best friend from childhood. They lived in Pueblo, Colorado. I move there as a teenager and get to say that I grew up there. I studied Spanish extensively. I went and lived in Puerto Rico for a while. I visited two states in Mexico. I can tell you with total confidence that I speak Spanish better than most Mexican Americans that you find across the southwest. I've been to all of the southwestern states. I currently own land in New Mexico. I say all that to say this. I take great pride in being Spanish. I never speak of being mestizo. This is the attitude all across Latin America. It's only in the USA that mestizos go on about how extremely amerindian they are.

Actually another reason why the Mexican Government wanted Anglo-Americans to come into their territories in the SW is because the Mexicans and the Natives(primarily the Comanches) were at war with each other and they needed more people to those territories to fight the Natives because Mexico didn't have a powerful army to fight them. Also another reason why the US wanted the West Coast is because the US wanted to expand to the Pacific to do trade with Asia and build railroads to strenghten the US in which Mexico was too poor to do.

For people in the comments: New Mexico was a part of Mexico from 1821-1848. Among countries that were part of Mexico along with New Mexico -were Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica- before this it was New Spain.

I agree, the Mexican Period was only 25 years long the, historian failed to mention. Socorro to northern New Mexico are the roots of the Spanish Colonial Period, about 225 years starting in 1598. It is important to be informed that all lands from the Caribbeans, Cuba, today's Mexico, California, Pacific coast, New Mexico which included Arizona, Texas, Florida which included up to Louisiana, Central America, Philippines were all not only separate territories but very distant parts of New Spain, ruled by Spains viceroy from Mexico City for the king of Spain, to better understand our unique America history here in the US of A, a part of Spanish America. Most have no clue on New Spain. We pretty much need to self educate on our history because historians don't teach the foundation which is New Spain, lasting three centuries, for some territories sooner, others later depending on treaties, independence, etc... How can a historian teach NM history without going back to the 1500s, Spains New Spain. Spain never identified or knew New Mexico to be Mexico or it's citizens Mexican, neither did the Pueblo, Apache, Navajo, Ute, Comanche. Go to any Indian Pueblo to get an earful of "the Spanish" a living history of New Mexicos Spains stamp on the territory for over 400 years -- Socorro to the north. We may not be Spaniards, neither are we Mexican, we are New Mexican,, our history. Our Espanoles forefathers toiled the soil of our homeland for our survival as part of New Spain for centuries. After we became US American citizens in 1848, any of Padre Martinez or Gov Armijo Mexican patriotism waned. 25 years of Mexico hardly made a dent on the Pueblo's who rarely even mention Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Fe for Mexican officials during the Mexican Period became a church for Anglo soldiers during the Territorial Period and was later left in disrepair. And why are SW Hispanic referred to as Mexican while the SW Indians don't dare go there. Mexican is a citizenship from Mexico, and a brief 25 years does not make a Mexican. We're not even Mexican American, as we're not immigrants from Mexico. SW Indians inherently know they are not Mexican, they know their indigenous lands. "Mexico" had it's beginning in 1824. New Mexico got it's name about 1560, predating Mexico by two centuries. Take a look at any map of New Spain prior to 1824, there is no Mexico. When Rob Martinez goes to "Mexico" prior to 1824 he is not exactly historically correct as there was no Mexico back in the day. When Cortez arrived in Vera Cruz, Tenochitlan and so forth, it was a nameless land with hundreds of different tribes with indigenous names. Not a wonder folks are totally confused. We New Mexicans had been here, our homeland for over two centuries when Mexican Chihuahuans began migrating to US border areas decades after the Mexican War of1846. They weren't from today's United States, the SW was not historically Mexico or their homeland. Who of us says we are part of Mexico, who wants Mexico. No one I know of... And why do we refer to them as they... because we are not they. Mexicans roots are from today's Mexico, connected by Mexicos Indian tribes, history, culture, politics and family ties. Mexicans hate Spains Cortez and Malinche is a traitor. Spanish is an insult. Now in northern NM we put on parades for Spains DeVargas and Onate. Mexicans historically had no connection to NM except for New Spain, generally not even making a presence in NM during the Mexican Period. New Mexico territory was a not mestizo culture, as in other territories of New Spain to our south, even though the blood is mixed. In the territory of NM, Indians and Spanish were separated each retaining their culture, Spanish or Indian. Spain conquered the Aztec in the Tenochitlan territory, better known as Mexico City area (and other New Spain territories--Nueva Galacia, Estramadura, Nuevo Leon, Yucatan, etc, in today's Mexico) becoming one mestizo culture. Today in central / northern NM, neither culture identify as mestizo not even the Pueblo who were conquered and influenced by Spain , living in their ancient villages apart from the Spanish. The cultures did not merge to mestizo people, thought influenced by one another as is socially typical as old as history. As the Apache Navajo Ute Comanche, never conquered by Spain, how can they be mestizo. These for the most are pure Indian except for the genizaro raised by Spanish families. New Mexico needs a state historian who is not Chicano Studies influenced. Martinez himself stated we are not immigrants. Chicano Studies professor families immigrated from Mexico, hate the US, the GH Treaty, Polk and all, and Mexican activist immigrants got the ball rolling on chicanoizm which basically claims Mexico is the rightful ownership of the SW, glorify the Indian and hate the Spanish. They are a different culture and people to those from conservative Spanish NM in central northern NM. By the way, Hispanic is a 1970s US Census Bureau identifer, almost unknown in NM or any other part of the US. Popularized by mass Mexican immigration 20 years ago and rarely used outside the United States. Latin Americans don't use Hispanic in their country of origin. Where I grew up in northern NM, we all called ourselves Spanish, Spain the motherland, some travel to Spain to find their Austurian or Andalucian etc roots.. Rob like the Chicano movement and unlike many northern NMs is stuck in the short lived Mexican Period. And he represents our history. Can't NM do better... We're not so different other folks in the US who call themselves Italian, or Irish. Or others who call themselves Puerto Rican, or Guatamalen., or Honduran. Or Brazilians who identify as Portuguese, Argentinans who are Italian and still speak the mother tongue. . NM is part of Spanish America and New Spain. We are nuevomexicanos, similar to tejanos and californios. our 400 years homeland, our own culture, history which no immigrant Mexican can claim.

@@yasmin1261 Absolutely, It was Spain who conquored what is today Mexico. But when Cortez arrived in Vera Cruz 1519, there was no united nation. Upon explorations, the lands were occupied by many tribes who did not know themselves as Mexican. Of all Europeans, it was the Spanish by far who mixed with the Indian. Since 1824, Mexicans are citizens of Mexico under Mexico's flag and constitution. There are high populations of Amerindians and a high populatio of Indian/Spanish blood with varing percentage blood in the DNA. Mexico is also a melting pot of imore recent immigrants including Spaniards whose descendants do not share New Spain ancestry of 500 years ago. Mexican citizens of the 500 years history in the western hemisphere, the majority, mestizo are proud of their Indian blood and many hold a grudge against the Spanish, the conquest , Cortez and even Malinche. As far as the video you recommended on NM genealogy, I am already aware of Christmas and Cervantes work. Basically the Spanish arrived in ships in Vera Cruz and reboarded to South America. Some stayed in what is today Mexico, a few went further north to settle in what was to become their homeland, central and northern NM. There were both Indian and Blacks in the picture. Very similar to as all parts of New Spain from California to Florida, today's Mexico, Central America, Cuba, Philippines, Caribbeans; but California to SW to Florida was barely populated by the Spanish colonists. New Mexicans were the first settlers surrounded by thousands of unconquered wild Indians who raided and attacked in every direction, and the Pueblo's lived in their own villages, so there was not much mixing between the Spanish and Indian as in other parts of Spanish America where the Indian was conquered by the thousands and subjected to Spain, both later merged to a mestizo culture. In fact, there has always been a very strong preservation of the Spanish culture in northern NM which never became mestizo cultures by either the Indian or Spanish.

@@bigal2362 The United States recognized California and the SW as Spains lands/territories, just check a map from that era. They were part of New Spain. The US was well aware of Mexican independence from
Spain. And there was no Mexico until 1821, US citizens were uneducated and didn't know our history, much less Mexicos. Mexico claimed the northern territories which by the way were never involved in gaining independence from Spain, in fact many SW colonists were loyalists to Spain. They became Mexican by CITIZENSHIP under the young Mexicos new constitution and flag. Every one in the SW suddenly became Mexican, subjects and citizens of Mexico for barely 25 years, up to 1848, then became United States citizens. Mexican is a citizenship. Except for the thousands of unconquered Indians who didn't claim or recognize Mexican citizenship, they were subject to no one and Mexico never conquered them.
The US a nation in 1776. Not much was know at that time of the west. After a decade the USA began serious exploration of west North America after familiarity with tribes, establishing routes for westward settlements, involving treaties, wars. This was a few years prior to Mexican independence. The biggest US western involvement was the Mexican War, Treaty and Purchase. Actually prior to Mexican independence, Spains Texas Spanish governor was involved in negotiations between M Austin and Spain to land grant Americans in Texas, another westward movement involving Spain. Had Mexico not gained independence, good chance Spain may have sold the territories to the US. Mexico does not share a historical culture with northern/central NM, the Spanish Colonial early settlements, Socorro to Taos. Northern NM was not even a mestizo culture, how so, Indians were unconquered, 100% Indian blood. And just like plains or other northern tribes, never express anything mestizo or metis. The Pueblo lived in their ancient lands, separated from the Spanish, and were able to retain their language, religion and culture. Never accepted Mexican and up to date, they'll never acknowledged to be a mestizo, it's just not the culture up north... Don t tell someone reasonably versed in NM history that the unique culture is a hoax.
There is a common ground in Mexican Americans from southern NM and Mexicans. These migrated from Chihuahua to the middle of nowhere wilderness, uncolonized border areas after the Mexican War and have direct ties with Mexico in culture and blood -- primos. All this nonsense on Raza, Chicano is based on mestizo Mexican immigrants to the US or modern era Mexican. These politcal terms were never in use in the 1800s. Theres a good chance your family was never here until 1970, start of mass migration into the USA.

@@bigal2362 The SW was so far from other parts of New Spain, Spain was unable to conquer Indians and the Spanish were unable to incorporate them into society. Spoken like a politically biased Chicano movement socialist. Half the story, no mention that the unconquered Indians killed anyone in sight, racism.... including killing enemy tribes. Slavery was accepted for centuries, still the psyche of the human mind in the 16th century... And still practiced in parts of the world... Indians and African blacks slaved their own before any white European set foot in America. So much for your saying a lot of nothing-- lol...
