    Whenever you see a ‘M’ before aircraft designation is stands for multi mission MH-47 is the multirole version of the chinook used by 160th SOAR. The Q just means unmanned aerial system. Hence MQ-9 Multi-mission Unmanned aerial system.

    The fact that the Reaper can carry AIM-9X missiles means that they do have some air-combat capability, since the AIM-9 series of missiles is a short-range air-to-air missile, generally used within about 3 to 10 miles. The Reaper could probably be configured with a variety of intermediate range anti-aircraft missiles as well, and sent up in advance of a possible engagement to function as remote firing platforms, with targets being selected and designated either directly by the drone operator, or by other weapon operators on either a Command & Control aircraft, or at another base.
    While jet engines can deliver far higher performance than propellers, they come at the cost of burning far more fuel, meaning they generally can't stay in the air as long, and are far easier to detect thermally at more extended ranges, since they have the enormous plumes of jet exhaust behind them.
    Ultimately, the virtues of drones must always include the fact that the loss of a drone doesn't harm any of the trained professionals operating its various systems, and that those professionals, being able to focus their professional development more directly, will probably be more capable in their fields than a fighter pilot would be, who has to be very good at combat piloting, professional at the various electronic systems, and at least highly competent at the use of all the various weapons a fighter can carry. Another benefit of drone use is that individually, they're generally far less expensive than manned military aircraft, with the obvious potential for force endurance and concentration.

    A turboprop engine is used to increase loiter time. Having it stay aloft for many hours at a time is more valuable than pure speed. The top speed of the Reaper is around 300 mph (482 kph) with a 200 mph (313 kph) cruising speed.
    Think about future UCAVs (unmanned combat aerial vehicle) that are stealthy and have improved sensors. They will spot the enemy before they can be detected. They can fire missiles themselves or another aircraft further behind can launch missiles from another location still unseen by the enemy. Or they can act as wingmen for manned fighters. An enemy squadron could find themselves facing a swarm of BVR missiles appearing out of the blue from multiple directions.

    you guys are missing a huge strategic advantage. These aircraft have a very low radar cross section. Load them up with sidewinders etc. swarm them to mimic a conventional aircraft formation, draw in the enemy, split up and engage, then follow up with the live pilots to mop up and spank the leftovers.

    Gen 7 will most likely have quantum entanglement communications. Basically an impossible to interrupt very low latency system... fast enough to allow remote piloting of a fighter in a non permissible environment. Both the US and China and experimenting with the tech. If you remove latency and satellite dependency remote fighters are the way to go.

    The MQ-9 uses a Honeywell TPE-331 engine of 900 horsepower. You can read more here under the specifications section: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Atomics_MQ-9_Reaper#Specifications
    That said the new C-130J Super Hercules uses Rolls Royce AE 2100 engines. RR took over Allison Engines, who'd made the T-56 that had powered all previous versions of the Herc. Allison Engines became Rolls Royce North America. If Allison Engines had to go under foreign ownership, I'm glad it's our trusted friends, the Brits! You can learn more about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_North_America

    So these do actually use a turbine engine. They are turboprops which is just a jet engine with a propeller. This enables low and slow flight and much longer loiter times which is what you want for a ground support and surveillance drone like this.

  • @jesselenz5452
    @jesselenz5452 Місяць тому

    It is perfectly large enough to house a jet engine, look up the world's smallest jet plane and you'll see what I mean. But the advantage of a propeller-driven aircraft is less fuel consumption so the ability to stay on station longer and carry more ammo because the weight allowance is not needed for fuel.

  • @zoomed8122
    @zoomed8122 Місяць тому

    The propeller engine is much simpler, more reliable, easier to work on, and has far longer maintenance intervals. The engine is also much more fuel efficient. It’s like a Honda civic engine compared to a Bugatti.
    It may not be cool and flashy like a F16, A10 or F18 but it can loiter for 20 hours and the guys on the ground have communication with the RPA watching them ready to sling a hellfire if needed.

    We could probably make autonomous F 22s if we want. They say the F 22 can't be flown to its capacity by human pilots. Suddenly you're making 10+ G turns at mach speeds. If a human does that he's or she's going to sleep for a while.

    Reaper drones use bombs/missiles for "mission specific" targets. They're not ground support or saturation bombing aircraft. That's what bombers and Fighter/Attack aircraft are for. Sometimes they carry no armaments at all. BTW, jet engines burn more fuel and make more noise than a propeller. The propeller gives this "specific" reaper more loiter/surveillance time over the "mission specific" target area. There are many other drones like it that are jet powered (Global Hawk), or haven't you noticed?😳 The US began experimenting with remotely controlled unmanned aircraft as far back as WWII. That's how Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was killed. Also, ANY modern aircraft that's shot down contains technology that the enemy would want to examine.
    Peace to you.🕊

    The 15 year thing- you have to remember "Tech" advances makes things smaller, example- Car phone > Bag phone > Brick phone > Nokia "Bar" phone > Flip phone > now you can use your watch. The only reason phones got bigger was due to use of multi-media. The tech part of the drone can be constantly updated- it's basically a weapons truck with sensors, as most of the actual tech it needs is in a trailer in Nevada lol.

    This drone and many others, along with my personal experience of working on USMC attack helos, is why I don’t it funny when so many declare Ukraine and Russias use for drones is groundbreaking and the future. No, we done/looked at all the same thing. Since the 1980’s, the first users of drones in the US military was the modernized Iowa Class BB’s in the 1980’s as spotter drones for main gun fire. And that addition with others made the the most accurate naval guns ever made, hands down. As the only nation who in corporates drones with BB’s. Ever since then. We have only had the most powerful and deadly drones ever devised, cool, Russian or Ukrainian drones can kill one target, maybe. Ours can kill many, upon many. Then fly back, re armed and attack. Again and again. Along with guide in huge strike packages, then go kill many independent targets. Then return to re arm and refuel, and go out, yet again. And over and over.no Ukraine and Russia aren’t the future of drone warfare, they are the exception and what the poor and desperate do. The US had fought from day one to be independent and a power to prevent such things for us. And to an extent others. We paid the price in blood. Others haven’t, and we benefited so many and the world, espeuas two time world champs. Of which no one else can claim. We, my ancestors and my self earned that right to shit talk, in blood, and we’ve done nothing but win since the revolution. No one else can say the say the same for the same number of years, or even claim to bw a super power, we won. Period, end of story. Communists or those who mirro them, are starving and stupid. Cabot be denied, they lack in all ways, including technology and food. They can’t even make one stealth aircraft and feed their people. A joke. We spend more on bases, our side of US territory than any communist country spends on their entire military, once again a joke. They don’t have a real, blue water navy, no world power. A joke.

    One of the reasons for the propeller driven tech for this drone is it uses less fuel. Depending on how its loaded, one of these will be able to fly for as long as nearly 2 days. Even in "short" duration configs it can go over 12 hours.

    Mate, if you have not tried it already, one of my favorite book series is "The Brotherhood of War" by W.E.B. Griffin. He also has "The Corps" and some other series if you like his writing style. But it follows a group of officers from taking their commission until being generals and stuff through World War II and the Vietnam war. It was one of the first military series that made me fall in love with reading.

    Im gonna keep posting about marsoc until one day you do a vid on them they're pretty similar to the Royal marines. I'd say they are the u.s equivalent, maybe more specialized

    The MQ-9 uses a turboprop for a variety of reasons. This uses a turbine similar to jet engines…. but typically can’t go as fast to have a longer range.
    There is another advantage to the push configuration here, notice how the exhaust passes through the propeller? This disperses the heat signature which helps against IR based MANPADS.

    I believe propellers are generally used in air craft for better sustain flight and cruising at lower speeds.

    The is an equipment designator syste like the AN/ALQ-39 flare system. MQ is probably the designator for un manned drone a hangover from the days of McNamara.

    using the aim-9 sidewinder which can strike a fighter aircraft from any direction, it might be dangerous to try to dog fight this drone.

    It's a wonder the creator doesn't re-enlist in AirForce to fly an unmaned drone ?? Gamers make great pilots and controllers 🤔

    I think he meant "Great Power Warfare" asset. As in a component of how Great Powers plan and execute combined arms warfare.

    As far as what you are talking about the next drones being, you need to look at the "NGAD" or Next Generation Air Dominance concept plane.
