Fujifilm Exposure Bracketing and HDR

  • Fujifilm exposure bracketing tutorial and how to exposure bracket on XT2, XT3, and XT4 cameras. Also a comparison with the High Dynamic Range (HDR) setting. ❗️IMPORTANT: In the video, I used a simple demo example at one point of varying the Aperture and keeping the SS and ISO fixed. You really want to vary the SS or ISO instead. Changing aperture can alter the Depth of Field and thus cause issues later on with your bracketing merge in post-production. So instead, either shoot all manual and alter your SS and/or ISO -- or put the camera in fully automatic in which case the aperture would be the LAST adjustment the camera would consider making after it's depleted all options of SS and ISO first. Special thanks to one of my viewers (Greg) for catching this in the published version of this video. 💻

2 thinx to consider when bracketing:
    1. you want to use a tripod primarily to avoid geometrical differences between images. Not only your hand movement, but to make thinx worse, the lens geometry and the distortion of perspective are also against you: a slight change of position changes the angles of lines of objex in your image, so merging them into one is far beyond just a small offset move.
    2. You want to shoot in aperture priority mode because different apertures change the characteristics of the lens, making certain areas sharper or softer, creating chromatic aberrations, vignetting, and so on. But you want to have the bracketed images geometrically as close as possible.

One of my goals for where I want to be when Covid is over - to have something more positive to say for the past year than just "I survived," as serious as that is - is I want to know my camera more thoroughly, and videos like this are what I need. I learned a lot this morning, just as I'm packing my camera for a road trip for work. So now I have some cool experiments to try, which will make me more expert on my camera. Thanks as always for more great content. - Dave

Another thought for a future video is to tie the bracketing information to judgements about the amount of dynamic range in a scene and how many stops to bracket. That would be helpful. I find that using ETTR, the Fuji cameras, at least those using the 26mp sensor, will recover at least a stop or two of shadow detail, and ordinarily I don’t need to use HDR to cover the exposure. If scenes have more dynamic range than that, or ,if I’m interested in more detail, then I’ll do HDR. Thanks. The camera settings are very helpful here. Geoff

Great info on the AE bracketing - I always look to you first for the best tips! I noticed that the in-camera HDR takes 3 exposures, whereas you took 5 AE bracket exposures. I wonder if the number of exposures makes a difference to the final image. Do you think the photo taken with HDR feature (3 exposures) vs the AE bracketing HDR merge (5 exposures) might account for the difference in shadows, contrast etc? Just curious!
