Just had my first training session today and it was all hand kiting and I was struggling with the steering portion. This helped a lot. Thank you for making the video.
How’s the progress?
No snide remarks, just gratitude. Thank you for the lesson
I had the privilege of learning from this pro in class almost 3 years ago. That's exactly what he taught and I've been doing it for years. Excellent step by step buddy, and do the RANTS as I know many pilots who do not practice the basics and wonder why they fall short in skill development.
Can’t believe it’s been that long man! You’ll have to educate me on that acronym.
@@liftedppg4370 I meant the rant in your video about practicing often!
Winds looked about like what I was trying to kite in today. I did not learn to hold the brake mallions overhand as you showed. I think it would be easier than underhand and pulling as I have been doing. I will try this next kiting session. I am pretty good at controlling the wing when it is up, but the variable zero-7 mph winds give me just a few seconds of good flight before dropping to zero and even walking backwards isn't enough to keep it flying. Can't wait for a day with actual steady winds.
Thank you so much for creating this!! This is awesome instruction. I am only five days into my training and we are breaking due to weather. I’ve had a chance to hand kite a few times, and I am saving this video to remind myself how to do it. Thanks again!
Awesome, happy to hear it Derek! I hope your training has been going well since.
Thank you my friend I trained at aviator January 2017 Your videos are keeping me sharp thank you very much great job teaching
That’s awesome David, you were one of the original Aviators. It’s changed a lot since then! So happy to hear this content is helping you. Continued education content for pilots that don’t get to fly all that often and need some “sharpening” has been my (very niche) target audience, always happy to hear it is reaching those individuals!
Nice to meet you David 😄
This is fantastically helpful. Thank you Micah!
Thanks for making this video! I've wanted to learn how to hand kite like this, but haven't found any explanations on how it's done. Super helpful 👍🏻
Awesome, I’m so glad. I hope you find it helpful next time you’re out there, Josh!
Great video as usual Micah. I can't thank you enough for your amazing teaching spirit. I will never forget to give myself grace now since you brought that to my attention.
Thank you! I’m happy to hear that ☺️
one of the better hand kiting explanation videos out there. A little more camera angle on what your hands were doing would have been nice, but great video nonetheless.
Thank you for the feedback Craig! Hope the video helps 😄
It is funny how opinions vary. The usefulness of hand kiting seems to vary about 50/50 with instructors. Some swear by it as a learning thing and some say you’re wasting your time. I spent my first hour or two hand kiting mine just learning to lay out the lines and how different control inputs affected the glider position. I thought it was invaluable in learning to feel the wing before hooking into it
If I have a limited amount of time with a student, I might briefly cover it and let them try it out, but I won’t force them to get it, as there aren’t a whole lot of transferable skills that come from mastering it.
If they get it, that’s great and now they can expedite the setup process but otherwise not a big deal. 🤙🏻
This looks fun but it's a big no no in the paragliding world. You don't want to bring the wing up without being clipped in if you are on a hill or cliff. A guy got killed at one of our flying sites last year because he got plucked and didn't let go fast enough. So, keep this technique to flat ground.
I just discovered your channel, this is great content! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much Noah! Stoked to get this feedback from you 🥹❤️
Great video! Lots of very good information here! Thank you!
Outstanding content Brother. Great tips and I love you didn't edit out the fun stuff, i.e. C-130, Arianna laughing and sneezing. Miss you buddy.
Haha gotta keep it lighthearted! Miss you too, Tom 😄
Very nice technique and tutorial!
Thanks Robert!
Great video as always, lovin it!
Thanks Steve!
This channel is great, Thank you.
Much appreciated!
What a legend
Good explanation
That is insane man!!! I literally was just thinking that today. I'm so sick of having to pull my wing out Lay it out. Pull it all from itself so aggravating and time-consuming
Haha no more! You’re in the cool kid club now 🤩
You are a great teacher Micah!!
Thank you so much, it’s truly my passion!
@@liftedppg4370 that fact is amazingly clear Micah! 🪂❤️🙏🏼
Semper Fi and cool handle
Fantastic explanation and visual backups… you don’t need a studio, she needs a God bless you lol😅
😅 She puts up with a lot!
Amen I love you man. I have an epsilon 9 it's like a 30 or 29 and I'm almost too fat. I consider myself having to do gangster flying. I have to come in heavy and if I come in and have you I have to have a lot of control authority and not take any guff. I get to be towed into space at the big giant flat home for gangsters that learn to fly. When I land I'm going to point into the wind and fly toward the ground at trim speed. I'm going to unbuckle my chest strap and lean way forward to get my legs under me for the disaster that is coming. I'm only going to focus on the roll axis. I will fly in at trim speed lean Way Forward, when I am one yard from the ground jam the brakes on all the way and eat my landing. I want to stop making a transition with a swoop and all those other things that I can't see or judge and land with the idea that I am coming in at trim speed and slamming on the brakes to make a transient one minute I was flying perfect the next minute I got my brakes all the way down and I'm biting my mouth peace taking my medicine. I think currently with my hours of flight being zero and making my first landing I need to go with a flat Wing policy and eliminate trying to judge that pitch axis and everything. I don't have to hit a very big place I've only got a thousand feet of clearance in every direction so I just lie down in there and it'll get close somewhere and then I'll slam it. Any comments on this?
You put out some really good content! Very informative, thank you!
Doing my very best for this sport that I love, thank you for your support! ❤️
@@liftedppg4370 I have a question for you if you don’t mind? I recently took my first beach flight. I pretty much only have had the opportunity to fly in low wind conditions before. At the beach when I flew into the wind I would have minimal ground speed. My question is does the wind replace the ground speed when I pull brake? Can I pull the same amount of brake as I would flying down wind or is it easier to stall the wing while flying into heavier amounts of wind?
@@EvilKen01 good question! Your wings speed is always the same regardless of the wind speed over the ground. Pulling brakes decreases the wings airspeed, you may need to pull fully down to your pockets like you are used to at the beach to get the same smooth landing. Does this help?
You can pull the same amount of brake flying downwind or upwind, the glider doesn’t know the difference, since it’s not connected to the ground.
@@liftedppg4370 that is what I thought because the wind is still creating lift even without ground speed. I just wanted to make sure before I start playing around to much. Thank you for your response. I looked you up because I wouldn’t mind taking advanced training but unfortunately I only get a few weeks a year off which I spend in Puerto Rico. Are you ever up near NY or do you only train at aviator?
Awesome!!!
I feel like Steve-O is giving me my safety training 😂
😅
Lol God bless you and thank you for the refresh!
Cheers
I just bought a 8m foil kite to practice with I just hope it will perform well for my purposes...
Nice, those are fun! Curious, does it have separate A,B,C lines?
@@liftedppg4370 Yes it actually does I'm waiting on some nice winds to try it out though and really the only places I know to fly it is the beach here in Israel 🇮🇱 but beautiful place here for sure !! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and stories I'm a new subscriber to your channel , hope to see more of your videos.. Shalom from the Holy Land....

Hey Micah - thank you for this channel, and dumping your knowledge! Quick question on engine drills, or lack thereof: Every video I see goes crazy talking about ground handling of the wing, and various drills. This is critical i agree, but i am now at the point where i need familiarity with the motor+ wing, and this is where it gets shady. Anything you recommend to get familiar with the added controls? Thanks!
This is a really good point. The motor for me is the scary part of the apparatus and so being confident with it makes for a much more enjoyable experience all around. I have a video on my channel labeled “lean back drill” for this very purpose! Glad you’ve enjoyed the content 🙂
@@liftedppg4370 awesome i will look for it, thanks man!
Every single one of your vids is homerun.
would you make a video of kiting larger wings like 30 meter? For my size I need a large wing and I’m having difficulty kiting. It seems like my Spyder 3 in 30 meter is much harder to kite than the smaller wings. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. Anyway some video knowledge on the topic would be handy. Thanks. Great channel btw
Hey Alfred! The tricky part with larger wings is they make moves more definitively but over a longer period of time. So if you aren’t able to catch the signs early on if what she’ll do next, by the time you are responding it can be too late. Not sure if this helps or is clear enough to understand. I could definitely get a video together explaining this! Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for responding I’ll keep an eye out.
You look like your in Colorado. You should fly in to our monthly breakfast at CO18, first Saturday of the month.
Chaparral airfield?
@@liftedppg4370 yup! You can always launch from my field if you’re want to fly in. 2.5 mile XC🤠
@@moose7472 would be great fun! Are you part of a group of other paramotor pilots?
I think my post keeps dropping off. No, I’m not a paramotor pilot. But my airstrip is aviation friendly. So, everyone is welcome. We tow hang gliders too. So, plenty of 103 activity, with lots of options for landing out.
