While I would seriously consider getting the vegetable slicer. I'd have given it 4 or 4.5 out of 5 stars because a traditional mandolin is easier to store. It won't fit into a drawer with your potato peeler and can opener and you have to make sure you keep all the parts together.
Yeah, let's punish them for being kids, by giving them unreliable blades that will make them hate being born ! Or you could just teach them basic blade security, enforce the rules, and be done with it.
@@oneoranota it's not about trust, kids are literally clumsy. their hands are smaller than an adult's therefore less precision and pressure/force so the possibility it might slip and cause an injury is higher.
@@martinmp23ify it doesnt need to be sharp blades, but a thin sheet of metal would do a better job cutting. Hot dogs are not the toughest thing in the world to cut
I got my dad the upright mandolin and he loves it. He has a hard time cutting food with a knife, since he has cerebral palsy. Hes always cutting his fingers on the normal mandolin. He absolutely loves using the new one
the shape of the catch bucket for the mandolin cant be changed to more snugly fit the frame. Those cutouts allow the mandolin's moving mechanism to move down past the container.
With a bit of practice you can also make those sheets with a knife. It works quite well with a Nakiri or Usuba knife. A filleting knife would also work good. You don't have to throw so much away and the knife is smaller and is more versatile
In my grandmother's kitchen the only gadget I saw was a hand held manual egg beater, she has the most gadget free kitchen ever and she raised 7 children and made the most delicious meals
Concerning the watermelon slicer, you need to turn it upside down so the curve to facing up and use that to follow the curve of the melon and then flip and pick up the slice. I love mine and makes it pretty quick
Oh yeah I remember that sheet slicer from sorted food, it bit the hands of one of the guys over it sorted food before they even got it in front of the camera
I have a hot dog slicer. I use it all the freaking time. You just give it a tiny wiggle once you get it through. The kids love it. It is one of my most used gadgets. 5 out of 5
First off, good video. However, his redesign of the mandoline catch container would require the mandoline itself to then need redesigning. The odd shape of the one end is because the blade of the mandoline moves down so the middle has to be cutout, but the sides extend because it still has to be long enough to brace against the mandoline so it doesn't wobble about. When designing, function should always come before looks. You should watch something doing whatever it does from every angle before deciding you can make it work or look better.
If I'm not mistaken, the hot dog cutter is not intended to cut all the way through. After pressing it into the hot dog, it should be removed in a reverse manner. When the hot dog is cooked, the body curls up beautifully. Of course you can do the same with a kitchen knife. There are many other types of creative cutting you can do to hot dogs that expand when cooked, and greatly delight children!
I have it. I cooked the hot dog, it releases the grease and hard to get the pieces out. A tiny fork would help when eating it due to tiny pieces. More annoying than just eating a dog with a bun.

I think that moving blade mandolin was definitely a good looking product. Definitely something I would buy, because sliced potatoes is something I use a lot in cooking
Don't know if they changed the design, but the hot dog slicer worked fine for cutting all the way through. The issues with it are that a lot of hot dogs are too large to fit and it's difficult to clean
It didn't cut through the casing, which is why he had to tear the pieces out. It's like trying to guillotine a hotdog with a plastic butter knife, it just squishes. Being intended for small children the designers obviously didn't want anything in there that would actually cut. Putting a hinge on it doesn't seem like a good redesign, because they'll only use an all-plastic hinge, or the feeblest of riveted hinges. Just manufactured garbage - can't do what it's supposed to do while still being safe for the people you expect to use it.

never ever thought I would have a problem related to anyform of PTSD .. but watching him using the mandoline slicer with no guard just made me just start to freak out as someone who sliced a chunk of his finger off before using one without the guard for it
Honestly I worked in a Japanese restaurant with amazing chefs whose knife skills are out of this world. I have seen them cut vegetables with a knife the way the spiral sheet machine does!!!!!
While I would seriously consider getting the vegetable slicer. I'd have given it 4 or 4.5 out of 5 stars because a traditional mandolin is easier to store. It won't fit into a drawer with your potato peeler and can opener and you have to make sure you keep all the parts together.
and it looks hard to wash! it looks time efficient for working moms and dads tho
It folds over and the plunger tucks away so, aside from the provided basket, it takes only as much space as a regular mandolin would seem to.
Do you have a link to it?
@@shahranhussain6037 wondering if these components are detachable for cleaning?
@@stanley19430 He did demonstrate that the tube the vegetables go through is detachable so it allows you to clean the blades.
God damn, for 40 years? Hats off to you my guy, that's some real dedication!
I believe he is holding the watermelon slicer upside down and what he is cutting it with is just supposed to grip the slices out.
I was thinking the same.
Exactly
I've seen people try it that way it still doesn't cut properly
Wow!!! I never thought he'll ever give a perfect score!!!
😂😆😜🤪🤣 Good job!!!
Moving Blade Mandolin
I think the hotdog thingamabob really could do with metal blades instead. The plastic is just too thick and dull.
It’s meant for kids. You can’t trust kids with metal blades.
@@emeralddarkness and if anything goes wrong, you end up in court, no thanks
I got my dad the upright mandolin and he loves it. He has a hard time cutting food with a knife, since he has cerebral palsy. Hes always cutting his fingers on the normal mandolin. He absolutely loves using the new one
Video idea: Dan redesigns his first kitchen gadgets🤔
Yes.
The moving blade mandolin is life-changing and maybe the great invention ever. 😍😍😍
I'm pretty sure the reason the bin on the mandolin has that weird shape is to make sure the blade part has room when it moves down.
the shape of the catch bucket for the mandolin cant be changed to more snugly fit the frame.
Is there a video of Dan putting himself to the test!? Like maybe some of his old designs or something... And if not, then WANT!
I'm starting to love this series and that job LOL
Will y'all ever make a compilation of the all-5 rated gadgets, like the moving blade?
I think it’s be a short one. Pretty sure this is the only one 🤷🏼♂️
I have a hot dog slicer. I use it all the freaking time. You just give it a tiny wiggle once you get it through. The kids love it. It is one of my most used gadgets. 5 out of 5
I really look forward to these videos, Dan's vibes are immaculate
First off, good video. However, his redesign of the mandoline catch container would require the mandoline itself to then need redesigning. The odd shape of the one end is because the blade of the mandoline moves down so the middle has to be cutout, but the sides extend because it still has to be long enough to brace against the mandoline so it doesn't wobble about.
When designing, function should always come before looks. You should watch something doing whatever it does from every angle before deciding you can make it work or look better.
I agree. He did well
"I'm redesigning the watermelon" 😂
Showing not only how the gadget performs but also possible improvements is really cool and interesting
Did he test the hot dog holder with a cooked or uncooked dog? I'd think a cooked dog would be softer and easier to cut, that looked uncooked/cold.
A grilled hot dog would be harder to cut since all you're doing is drying out the surface. Hot dogs come cooked.
@a r I mean, you can literally cut a hotdog with a spoon.
That Moving Blade Mandoline is great, im gonna get one for my mom for christmas!!! she loves cutting and slicing fruit and veggies so that would be great for her, glad i watched this!
I am so happy every time I see there’s a new one of these. This guy is so wonderful.
This guy is a genius
If the second gadget could be used to make potato sheets I would get on asap for e unique version of scalloped potato
I don't see why it couldn't, you would just have to prep the potato (and there would be a bit of "waste" potato that could be used for other things)
@@duckhead014 I'm already looking for one. Where I live in Canada 🇨🇦 doesn't get free shipping from anywhere so I'm hoping to find one at Walmart or Canadian tire before ordering online.
@@duckhead014 It was designed to grip vegetables only at the far ends. So the potato would have to be large enough to reach both ends of the device.
My boyfriend introduced me to this channel and I stumbled upon these videos. I always wondered about some of these things and if they really work. And as someone who has problems with their wrist, I do appreciate he takes into account the people that have similar issues.
Also, I was initially not sold on the Moving Blade Mandolin until I saw the feeding chute. Now we wanna find one, it seems ridiculously efficient.
hasselback cutter, brought the hassle back
16:04 I thought he was about to yeet everything off the table 😂😂😂
"Never ketchup, because its a hot dog."
I feel personally attacked.
yeah.. fr wtf
He ate a hot dog straight from the package and on top of that, he added one of the most putrid smelling things you can add to a food item.
This series is both a miracle of a commercial and a company's pr nightmare in the same package.
Even if the companies re-made the gadgets after Dan’s analysis Dan would still make a re-design
I need to watch more of this guy roasting products!! he don't miss A BEAT
There should also be cleaning(dishwasher safe or not,how hard it is to clean)and price as criteria
Love this guy. Cant believe I missed this episode.
Finally, the perfect gadget!!!
The moving mandolin is the king of all Kitchen gadgets.
Dude that 🤷he did at the end of him comparing the last product to the knife was just hilarious 😂😂
I'm redesigning the watermelon so that should help!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That's some next level criticism there👍🏼👍🏼
some people make fun of the bad hand with oil test... but my grandpa had a stroke and half of his body stop working... so he actually had only his left hand left to do anything ( he was right handed )... so that test actually gives you a lot of perspective for elderly people with a disability
I have been using that watermelon cutter for years and it works great. He is holding it upside down.
It's a little embarrassing they published this video with him using it wrong.
@@codak29 It is a first impression, there is no instructive of how to use it so he has to figure it out. That is the soul of the video, lol
Thank you UA-cam algorithm for brining me here this is genuinely interesting and a nice change from my standard "gaming" oriented videos. I will be watching more of this channel .
I've probably seen 10 people try those watermelon slicers and nobody had good luck. Even ones who used it correctly which Dan did not. But it's not an intuitive item for sure.
It's only useful if you make a watermelon salad/sangria and ... Scratch that, it's useless.
@@tomf3150 always a good use for ranch
My grandma bought me that hot dog slicer and I would love it as a kid, when I ever got hot dogs I would anyways need the slicer or I wouldn’t eat it, good memories.
I think that moving blade mandolin was definitely a good looking product. Definitely something I would buy, because sliced potatoes is something I use a lot in cooking
What the hell is wrong with ketchup on a hot dog? It and mustard go together perfectly.
Just manufactured garbage - can't do what it's supposed to do while still being safe for the people you expect to use it.
his shrug at 17:31 after the potato breaks just kills me
