Cardio is NOT one of the best ways to lose fat, but I have a strategy that is. In fact, it's also one of the fastest ways too - ua-cam.com/video/8bshv_9HWw4/v-deo.html
Could you please explain your jogging into more depth ? this seems to be entirely wrong or you are talking about it in a different context. You gain so much more improvement when you train in zone 2. How else would you train for a marathon ? By only sprinting ?
@@poelie1000 I didn't get that either, what the fuck. You only walk or do full out sprints? what? How do you warm up for sprints then, how do you train endurance? Almost like he is confusing running with sprinting, it doesn't add up.
aboctok I think you're over-analyzing :D it's just a fun af skit and Jesse's got the perfect part in it , he can really do comedy :p and nothing better than comedy combined with good information
Meaning of “sarcasm” in the English Dictionary ; the use of remarks that clearly mean the opposite of what they say, made in order to hurt someone's feelings or to criticize something in a humorous way... Or your just straight up being facetious.
Marathon runner here. Jogging is completely necessary to develop cardiovascular endurance. It all depends on what you are training for. I include sprints (speed work) in my program, but even for that I rarely do anything less than 400m intervals. The kind of sprints Jeff showed will barely do anything for cardiovascular development; you'll develop strength an anaerobic systems much more. I have to completely agree about getting outside whenever possible though.
I seriously did not understand how he portrayed jogging as something that can damage you? Studies have found that prolonged jogging actually strengthens the knee and joggers rarely face leg related issues later in life.
@@username8644 yeah I've had shin splints too and its sooo painful. I had to give myself some rest. But even after that I just love running or jogging. Running can get very very intensive. Proper warm-up and stretching is necessary.
@@username8644, mankind is literally designed for long distance running. It's one of our greatest evolutionary strengths. I think something went wrong with your training and you're blaming the activity rather than trying to do things better. In any case, I hope you find a solution to your leg problems.
@@username8644 Sorry your running knowledge wasn't at a high enough level to prevent you hurting yourself buddy. That must've been a frustrating experience. No wonder you're still bitter about it. Sad.
This channel is the number one information source for the healthy development of the body. I am still amazed by or terrified by how a huge percentage of other specialists harm people with their programs and lack of knowledge. Jesse recently said we have epidemy of people with bad posture, I say its already pandemic state. Literally, no one that I know has the right posture... You may be jacked you may be ripped but you slouching or limbing, this is sad. Have you ever met anyone being able to stand up from the floor in a squat position without the support of their hands? 51 years old and coming back to exercise?? Congratulations sir! I wish you good luck!
This is a perfect example of exercising for aesthetics vs exercising for health and fitness. I switched from my HIIT routine to this program. While it did make me bigger and stronger, I lost all of my athleticism. I became slower, less agile, less explosive, tired out faster and my resting heart rate increased quite a bit. I LOOKED better with this approach but felt worse. So I've since switched back to a more holistic fitness routine.
Yeah, I think Jeff has a lot of good advice when it comes to strengthening certain muscle groups and preventing injury, but his cardio advice seems to be geared towards body sculpting. His advice on posture correction is helping me immensely, but I'm also trying to train for 10Ks so cutting out jogging is ridiculous for me
@@soonahero Nah, I'm gonna keep running with the people who have been running for years and do the exercise that I enjoy. Thanks for the unconstructive and unnecessary advice though
Neither jogging nor static stretching before a workout is necessarily problematic; context is key. Yes, jogging is hard on the joints, it's not the most efficient way to burn calories in terms of cal/unit of time, and it can slow down muscle growth or bring about muscle atrophy. But high intensity workouts are difficult to sustain, can also be hard on the joints and can also bring about muscle atrophy. If building aerobic capacity is your goal, a moderate-intensity activity like jogging is indispensable. In fact, jogging constitutes something like 80% of all elite marathoners' workouts. Cf. Zinner, C. (2016). Training Aspects of Marathon Running. In *Marathon Running: Physiology, Psychology, Nutrition and Training Aspects* (pp. 153-171). Springer International Publishing. Yes, static stretching cold can cause injury and static stretching pre-weightlifting can decrease power output. But static stretching post-warmup and pre-workout is arguably preferable to no stretching. Static stretching pre-workout is also indispensable if tight muscles are impeding proper form (e.g. stretching the hip adductors or achilles pre-squat) or bringing about injury (e.g. stretching the quads before a jumping-intensive sport) and dynamic stretches don't get the job done.
@the business handler He doesnt know. There are reasons why every distance runner(almost) in the world, from hobbyjogger to elite, do 'jogging' as 70-80% of mileage as their workout.
@@leungpaul9401 you're missing the point. Jeff's problem was with ONLY jogging whilst avoiding benefits of sprints or runs, conversely your example trying to prove Jeff wrong listed jogging AND RUNNING which is obviously good therefore you're complainding over nothing. OBVIOUSLY MARATHON RUNNERS CAN JOG.. which is entirely missing the point of this video. Have you even visited Jeff's site?? Get with the program dude.
@@dnwy7466 I still don't get the point or the argument he's trying to make here. Jogging is a perfectly acceptable way of burning calories. No need to sprint or walk.
@@joshuataylor3550 Not really, it very much depends on what you are trying to achieve. I am currently training for 10k races. My program consists of 3 easy days (zone 2 - 1 short followed by 80m sprints and 2 long easy runs 10+ kms), 1 medium day (z3 tempo usually 8km) and 1 hard (z3 to z4 intervals, hills). Most runners do a lot of Z2 training; in the running context it means I can chat with my running partner the whole way. What Jeff is saying isn't necessarily wrong either, it's more aimed at people who are 'jogging' only occasionally and poorly who would be better off just doing sprints.
@@joshuataylor3550 depends on what you're trying to achieve. Highest calorie burn per unit of time? Yes. Conditioning, total calorie burn? No. Reason mostly being, unless you're extremely fit already you simply can't keep up high intensity for very long, your body won't be able to keep up. Applying this to running, if you run at high intensity not only will your cardiovascular system struggle to keep up if you're not an experienced runner, you'll also do a number on your joints and you'll interfere with recovery from lifting. For most most people, regular low/moderate intensity cardio over longer periods of time is better if for no other reason than you'll actually be able to do it and keep doing it.
@@joshuataylor3550 No, it's not. If I look at most elite endurance athletes, they train mostly at low intensity with only a small fraction of their training volume at high intensity. High volume is the name of the game. This isn't even specific to runners, who tend to have a larger fraction of time devoted to high intensity than CC skiers and cyclists (this is due to running being higher impact, limiting maximum volume before injury. Past 40 miles a week, injury rates go up rapidly.). The pure HIIT camp hasn't won an Olympic 5K since the 1960s.
@@pedrovera97your comment came across my thoughts as I watched the video, and in response to the other comments - does coronavirus decrease IQ as one of its signs and symptoms?
1:32 "At what point could you actually walk around like this without a machine holding you up, and get away with it for very long?" Walmart. You'll find them in Walmart.
I work at walmart and they have figured out that even walking for 10 minutes is too much for a lot of people. we have like 10 mobility carts with only maybe 100ish people in the store at any time.
I built a 10 story tower in my backyard so i don't have to use a stairmaster. Pretty happy with the results so far just gets a little sketchy in the wind
I have an issue with your jogging part. Jogging is aerobic, sprinting is anaerobic. They are both good. And jogging is something you can do anywhere and you need one thing, good shoes, thats it. On vacation and want cardio, go for a jog. Hour lunch break, go for a jog. Jogging has its benefits for heart health and weight loss, as long as its used as part of a strength training. You use the Rock as an example for the ropes, he also jogs :-)
So true. Jeff seems to think that light jogging has the same impact forces as sprinting, which is nonsense. Aerobic running/jogging done with good form strengthens the joints and forms the foundation of cardiovascular fitness.
Correct footwear, correct foot places (not heel striking), hip rotation, correct posture. Its more than just the right pair of shoes. Plus you would have heard Jeff say if youre overweight jogging puts a lot of strain on your joints.
The worst advise in terms of cardio and running. Run zone 2 out of a 5 zone model and run MORE. Do HIT running every time and you'll burn out in a week or two and end up injured. Theres a reason actual endurance athletes train mostly in the lower zones. It builds ENDURANCE which is aerobic cardio. Hit is anaerobic, and should only be use a month out from a race as its very hard on your body and very hard to recover from. You can't do 5 days of hit / anaerobic work in a week. Again you'll end up injured and over trained very quickly. Yes, if your just getting started walking is the best place. If your leading up to a race and already have an aerobic base then hit work is what's needed. For everyone in between who's looking for cardio (meaning aerobic) than "jogging" or running slow and getting in the miles is what's needed. This video is super misleading and pretty much incorrect on this aspect. Of course you can do what he says but you won't ever be super fast. Just over trained and injured with zero aerobic base.
Think you have misunderestood. You are seeing this as a 'runner', so obviously jogging makes sense. For those who want some cardio as part of a weight loss and/or strength and fitness program, jogging is one of the worst options. At no point is he saying anybody should do HIT sprints 5 days a week, not sure where you are getting that.
Very true. People really sleep on aerobic exercise in the muscle world but back when I was a distance runner and wrestler I can't tell you how much cardio helped me against larger guys. 80% of my cardio was not high intensity but I could go for days. When you can run a mile under 5 minutes, people are always shocked how well that carries into exerting yourself on the mat. Its true it doesn't make you big though.
@@soonahero can’t speak for David but following an extremely unhealthy lifestyle during lockdown + depression and anxiety due to changes in personal life, I’m now back at the gym running approx 10 km, 5 x a week and incorporating weight training and I feel on top of my game 💪🏼
I actually saw the most results when I stopped jogging and started doing interval sprints. I'd sprint the straight parts of my local track and walk the curves. I'd do that for at least 30min or (if I had the time) 3 miles.
I don't think it is for everybody. Me and the wife have been doing it for years with no injuries or issues. I think what should be said is, 'If you are going to do a thing. Do it properly.'
I sometimes do CrossFit workouts. I do a mixture of everything. I have however seen the effects of Crossfit on the regulars at a gym I frequent. The ones who stick with it truly transform into very athletic bodies, and they are way way more capable physically over time. People also tend to not have disproportionate bodies like most regular gym goers. I don’t like the way Crossfitters come across sometimes in attitudes. I also don’t particularly think Crossfit games is tech “games”. People train to compete, they don’t train to...train. It’s weird. That being said, Crossfit has a lot of benefits if done with proper form.
@@twoeightonesixzero4559 Yeah, I get it. Me and the wife don't do it for looks or competition. Me and my wife are in it for health and to maintain. She is already having a hard enough time getting me shirts as it is, due to my shoulders and neck. I don't need to be bigger.
i mean jogging is kinda necessary if you're actually training for any running sport beyond 800 metres though. it depends on what you need to train for.
I think he is talking about regular people, i like to run i do it for fun and for exercise, so i run fast, slow and in between on flat land, hills, and down them too like you said you have to concider what your lifestyle demands are, if your a marathon runner i imagine you cant nust do in place cardio as id imagine running 26 miles is pretty mentally draining doing anything for a long time takes mental focus
That's running for the purpose of conditioning yourself to be able to run longer distances. I think Jeff is talking about cardio for the purpose of burning calories/fat loss.
Jeff's talking about the most efficient cardio for the purpose of body building and strength training true. just think it's worth mentioning that endurance athletes cant just do 20 minute interval training when they need to train their bodies to work for 2 hours or more. Guess im nitpicking the clickbait "these are dumb excersises" title tbh
Video idea: ultimate guide for stretching ( what/how to stretch during the first night after u hit a muscle group, and also how to stretch them 1-3 days later when ur muscle are sore)
Light aerobic exercise and mobility (ROM under load) are two things that will help optimize recovery. With stretching you're essentially just stretching a rubber band.
Gaboumachine44 Well you're supposed to do your static stretching before bed to elongate the muscle fibers to expose them to growth while you sleep. and mobility stretches which last about 3 or 5 seconds before you workout to warm up the joints...
I’m marathon training, I obviously can’t walk it, and obviously sprinting it is unsustainable for 26.2 miles, so I’m like... I don’t have a choice but to run at a manageable pace. Lol.
He makes some valid points, but I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree to an extent. Most people aren't super athletes and have limited motivation. If they are still moving and exercising even in a non-ideal manner it is still beneficial. For example exercise bike and treadmill don't replicate the actual movements perfectly, but do them with good technique and you are still getting a workout. Likewise I don't think jogging is bad, plenty of studies have shown jogging to be good at improving both health outcomes and VO2 max. In fact I just finished reading a book on the merits of slow jogging. There is no real evidence that jogging is bad for joints (providing you run on natural surfaces). In fact if anything recent studies have shown it improves joint health. Similarly with Tabata, yes ideally people would follow the protocol exactly, but I will wager even skipping slowly for 30 secs followed by 10 secs rest will do a decent job at improving fitness for the average person as well as burning calories. I understand what he is saying, but what I'm saying is for the average person, provided they are sensible and use good technique many of those things aren't bad. I think the biggest danger is the number of people in the world leading a sedentary life style and not moving much at all, even low intensity non perfect exercise (provided it is done in a safe manner) is far far better than nothing. Setting the bar too high with respect to intensity is going to actually demotivate some people. If you are super fit and an athlete, then feel free to disregard what I just said. My comment is more aimed at people who are unfit or average fitness and are just happy to make moderate gains in cardiovascular and muscular fitness. But I encourage everyone not to believe what I or anyone says, and instead to read various studies for themselves.
Well the entire thing is if Jeff allows the sheep to think they can go running outside or go to a gym and workout and get results Jeff doesn't make his overpriced profits. YOU'LL NEVER SEE JEFF SAYING YOU CAN GET RESULTS WITHOUT PAYING HIM FIRST.
juandenz2008 he mostly just saying that you won't get all of the benefits if you half ass it. A lot of people put limits to what they can do and how lazy they do things.
Totally agree my dude! This video is purely a generalisation. Even just increasing your TDEE without cardio programming as such will provide results to the average gym-goer!
@porcelain: Goku is this anime guy from a show called Dragon Ball Z. Socially awkward people worship him because he can "power up" for entire episodes and fly through the air and teleport and shit. It's really awkward to talk to some of these fans. I've had one explain to me how he can "power up" and make himself strong. I've met more than one person who thinks humans CAN fly because Goku can. And it's just really cringy to listen to them reference it over and over like it's a real thing. I watched the show when I was a child/young teen. It was entertaining. Then I grew up and realized it's a completely overrated anime...like most animes. Tried rewatching it a year or two ago and I just couldn't do it. It's some seriously boring shit.
All I did for cardio was run on a treadmill and I’m Ranger-qualified and finished first out of 162 Soldiers during a 12-mile road march. It’s because of machine-based cardio that I am far more than what my peers could ever hope to be.
I stupidly signed up for a marathon while deployed and didn't have access to running space. We did have an elliptical though. I would be on that thing for hours. Came home and finished in about 3:40 with hardly any running lol
I've had two hip replacement surgeries. Any High impact activity involving my feet slamming to the ground is out. No running, jumping, none of that. It'll wear the joint out prematurely. My orthopedic surgeon & my chiropractor told me to walk, so that's what I do. I started with 15 minutes, which was difficult because of chronic back pain. After weeks of rehabilitating my back pain, piriformis syndrome, I'm up to an hour walk at a brisk pace. Now I'm conditioning my boi-mechanical health to optimal with a plethora of stretches & exercises & will be joining a gym when this COVID business is over. I'm looking forward to that.
@@Greencactus1 I developed Avascular necrosis of the hip joints. It's a severe restriction of blood supply to the joint that kills off the bone tissue of the femoral head causing it to collapse into the socket. This makes walking extremely difficult & painful. Avascular necrosis has a genetic component. My oldest brother had to have both his hips replaced & my middle brother has had one done as well.
Treadmills and Stairmasters can actually be a very good and effective cardio workout if you use them to it's full advantage. Using a treadmill on max incline is very convenient than trying to find a hill (which will always be limited by its peak). Plus the cardio machines force you to keep going and never stop. Also, they have timers on them which works really nicely if you try doing interval training. Running outside can actually be bad for your joints in the long run (no pun intended) if you're running on hard floor like sidewalks or concrete. If you ever plan on running outside, it's much better to run on a softer surface like dirt, grass, sand, or in the woods. It's not natural for humans to run on concrete. Back then, our ancestors ran wild through forests and what not. On top of that, they mostly ran barefooted, which is a more natural way to travel. The position of your feet is altered from it's natural state when you wear shoes compared to running barefooted.
I second this. I only run on concrete if It's part of a competition I'm running in. When I first started training, I ran on concrete and I got shin splints and ankle strains. Then once I started training on grass, never got injured again
Finally, something you said I disagree with. I've been doing HIIT workouts since November. When the gym was still open, I would do 3 sets of box jumps mixed with 3 sets on the ground (pushup claps, mountain climbers, and hip flexors from a plank position. With no gym, I've converted the box jumps to jump rope alternate legs for 30 seconds. I always get past 100, usually past 120, with a PR of 148. So, perhaps your right after all, cause I'm not milking the jump roping. After about a month, my dog has stopped barking at me while jumping rope. My body has responded splendidly. I like all your videos, but my favorite is the "8 exercises I wish I'd been doing all along." After doing a 20-25 minute HIIT, I incorporate 2 exercises from that video along with ab wheel from my feet. Then stretch/cooldown. By the end of HIIT, I'm flinging sweat all over my 40-50 degree garage. Anyway, thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us; it's been greatly appreciated, especially for the past 6 weeks.
He didn't say HIIT is bad. He said mixing hit with fullon strength training is bad. Which it is because it defeats the purpose of strength training. You can have strength days and hit days but don't try to lift maximum weight and do burpees at the same time.
Love your videos and you always make really valid points, including during this video... but you're so wrong about jogging. It is much better for you than sprinting, and can even be considered a replacement for it if you're jogging really fast. Walking is absolutely amazing if you are overweight and can't jog easily - you're right about that!

As a tall person that had a leg injury, and after years of training has joint pain from running and playing basketball, I learned the easiest form of cardio, and the most enjoyable is hopping on the mountain bike, and riding all over the neighborhood communities. You don't have to go uphill, or drive into insane hills, or down them. Riding straight for about an hour or even two will feel great on your body, without damaging your joints, or running your heart into the ground. You set the pace, and you control it, and you get to see the sights. My heart was never the strongest, I couldn't run long distances, but always ran, nowadays I just bike, and it feels GREAT! To anyone with joint pain, or not strong enough heart for marathons, I would go a simple way of riding a bike.
I absolutely love long duration cardio so I don’t understand why everyone is acting like hiit is the only way to go. I’ll choose a 45 minute jog over a 15 minute hiit anytime
These videos are based on the assumption the goal is to train like a pro athlete or to significantly improve overall strength and health. So either you already have decent jogging endurance or it's just not enough to get the results you're looking for. If you just want to stay in decent shape, then a long brisk jog will do for most. But you won't get shredded. Pro athletes train harder than juniors just like elite teams in armed forces train harder than GIs, etc. They have to do more because more is asked/expected of them.
@@bien.mp4 I think what he's trying to say is if u want to build stamina and endurance jogging is not the best option but as a normal person who wants to lose weight slowly than that's fine
@@sonlang4457 Agreed. Part of me likes the hostility to jogging. I used to get annoyed by all these people who'd brag about their workouts that involve "running" X miles a day. But then you look at these people run and see they can have casual conversations while running. I'm thinking, what's so great about your X-mile run when you could reduce the distance by 60%-70%, but increase your pace by 25-40% and sweat a lot harder? It's amazing how some people who swear by running are allergic to sprinting. I softened up my stance, though, because not everyone's life goal is to be an elite athlete, and that they just want to be healthier, and if jogging achieves this for them then who are we to tell them to knock it off. Plus, for some people, being outdoors and spending time in motion is the real gains. You can jog for 45 minutes and enjoy your surroundings and changing scenery, which is often a lot more feasible to accomplish compared to combining sprinting and walking.
I’m training to join the CAF and you gotta wake up and do a 3km run most days in Basic Training and in general according to legend. If it’s in our soldiers workout regiment, it’s in mine. Sorry Jeff 😅 But then again I’m not looking for gains or to lose fat, I simply need the endurance. The feeling after you almost collapse while basically gasping for air is a good one aswell, makes my brain go :)
My Highness but that’s not crossfit. They don’t program heavy lifts with cardio. They would do light to moderate lifts with cardio but heavy lifting is done by itself.
football training is a lot different than normal everyday crossfit. if you are training for a specific sport like football then it is not dumb. but for the average person that level of intensity is not necessary or advised.
Love Jeff's video, but I feel like I do have to take issue here. I love my elliptical, it's been been a great way to get great cardio consistently at all times of the year. More importantly it's been critical to the progress I've made from my starting weight in spite of ankle issues. He's 100% correct about lazy form but it seems to me like having the correct form is important with all forms of resistance training so why should this be different? I'd love to see Jeff specifically coach viewers on proper elliptical use. Regardless of your age or starting fitness level, you can get an intense workout in limited minutes with very, very little impact.
Yes, I agree. I love my Rogue Echo bike. I generally enjoy watching these videos, but the real object of this one seems to me to be provocative, to get people going as they say. The comment that "machine based cardio will never replicate what it actually feels like when your body is out in space doing these activities for itself" goes for absolutely everything that happens in a gym. I mean when you pick up something heavy in real life it's going to be a big awkward shape like a fridge or motorcycle or something . . . you're never going to come across something that looks like a barbell with weights attached. I might not be able to give you tips on working out, but I can help you with words. If you want to be rude about everyone making an effort to get fit at the gym, don't mess about with these far fetched examples. I'd just say what you want to say. It's still rude as heck, but a lot more efficient to say it this way. I'd applaud that.
the thing he misses more of the time in his videos and probably cuz they are for free(and you'll have to pay for a personal coaching and that is fair and correct) or just to make the videos not to long is CONTEXT...if you have injuries in the legs, a more comfortable way of doing it in a machine is way better than not doing anything at all...he can't just cover every situation i guess...
Another elliptical user here. I've got a bad hip and my doctor recommends the elliptical over jogging since it's less impact on the joints. However, some of the other commenters have made important points - we're probably not professional or even amateur athletes like the folks that particular comment is being aimed at. (I'm just another formerly obese person trying to get fit, myself.) For those who are actually training for sport performance, non-machine cardio probably is for the best. And my trainer has, in fact, forced me to do battle ropes instead of machine cardio for the last month. It's a lot harder than it looks...
I don't think he took issues with using the machines as intended. It's that they allow for us to be lazy in ways that real world cardio wouldn't. If you are utilizing the machines properly or for medical reasons it's fine. Just don't get lazy with it.
I'm not able bodied and most people with my health conditions (genetic) are on disability. I refuse and push myself crazy hard everyday and have been blessed with ppl who help me do tje things I can't. For me doing cardio on machines really helps because I can't do it "perfectly". To each their own 🤷🏼♀️ i get it done the best I possibly can and get complimented on my fit body quite a bit.
David Witt, sprinting isn't HIIT. Also, why did you capitalize the "s" in sprint? Are you saying Piero should go join the Sprint cellular network? Also, why are you criticizing someone for contributing to this channel and making a video request? Also why are you criticizing someone for wanting to see what a "proper" HIIT workout looks like when clearly you have no idea what one looks like yourself? Most people that jog don’t go herd enough in other exercises. It’s all about when you go intense. Jogging is awesome but if it’s your only cardio it has its kimits
You still should not "jog" like most people do and like Jesse did in this video. Running hard in intervals is going to beat that any day. Running long distance, steady state, on flat ground is high impact and low intensity, that's pretty much the opposite of what you want.
@@seybertooth9282 Tell that to rowers, long distance runners, and trail runners. Steady state is literally the heart of every training program for these sports. As in, the top programs and athletes train steady state multiple times a week, and sometimes multiple times a day. Every rowing coach I know (ex-olympians/college championship rowers mostly) live and breathe steady state.

Thats what your supposed to do, strength training first, cardio second. I dont think jeff was saying that is wrong just dont do it at the same time back and forth.
As for those locomotion stages I feel like he forgot about "running" Sprinting is absolute max speed, and if you're doing long distances like in cross country, you're not going to be able to keep up your maximum speed for an hour. You don't wanna go slow and jog, but you don't want to wear yourself out too soon by sprinting either
I ran cross country in high school, keeping a steady maintainable pace is required for sure, only time you really want to Sprint is the very last part of the course sprinting early will burn you out

Interesting that only 2% of the population has red hair, making them more of a minority than any other group and yet it is perfectly socially acceptable to insult them. Tbh I agree with what he is saying but saying jogging is not great cardio is incorrect, maybe for muscle gain and weight loss its not the best. But for general fitness jogging is really good and it does improve your cardio if you go for a long enough time.
Yeah. If he just said "jogging is not optimal for gains", we could let it slip, but he explicitly claimed jogging is unhealthy, and that is such bullshit :D Jogging is our natural mode of movement. It's is the one and only thing we do better than any other species on the planet. Yah, you can hurt yourself if you have bad technique, but that applies to LITERALLY EVERYTHING.
He was talking about people jogging while overweight, hence putting too much pressure on the joints. And yea the bad technique part is universal. Also, from what I've read (read up on bits of physiology from random books at uni lol), whether something is a natural mode of movement or not depends on the physiological need/purpose. Walking- covering a distance basically. Sprinting- running away from something or perhaps trying to catch something (e.g. hunting) or reach somewhere asap; if that is the case, the brain goes into its "fight or flight" mode as it is a matter of urgency. What is the purpose of jogging? Covering a distance?- if you have time you can relax and walk, if urgent you try and sprint there asap. In what situation do you actually "need" to jog at moderate pace? A sport is not a "need", it is voluntary participation. Jogging, if you breakdown the form, is literally power-walking with jumps at the end of every step. Sprinting on the other hand is completely different with the forward-leaning angle and more muscle involvements, which implies that this form of movement has a different purpose than walking as the body automatically shifts into a different form of movement. When we jog, we are forcing our bodies to mix up walking and jumping at the same time. No hate. Just saying that running at a moderate pace is only involved in sport and is not a natural "need" for our bodies (VO2 max can be improved with any form of cardio). May be I am taking a few books too seriously lol. I myself go for a 3-5km jog at least 2x a week in addition to other types of training and do believe in the benefits for improving your max capacity for cardio, but personally don't believe it is a natural mode of movement :)
Flash_92 Gaming The purpose of jogging was to consistently chase prey and tire them out while hunting. For example: A buffalo is faster than us humans but it can't sustain running for long periods of times like humans, allowing us to chase down and tire the buffalo and go for the kill
Jogging is great. Love this channel & lifting but am so sick of muscle-building dudes hating on jogs. Sprints more often lead to muscle pulls and injury. Nice easy jogs for 30 min a day 5x a week and anyone can lose weight.
@@yellowmellow9288 plus it's mentally enjoyable. When I jog it's more like a physical meditation. After a month or 2 anyone above 20% body fat can get trim.
Definitely not geared towards endurance athletes. My average caloric expenditure for a marathon is about 5,100 calories. You learn to not pound the ground every stride. As far as someone just getting in shape their sprint may look like a jog until they get stronger and lose some mass.
I personally use a half-an-hour run for mental clarity because it find allows to me enter the flow state easily (especially compared to HIIT, though some might say it gives your the same cardiovascular benefits). Overtime I find running both on a treadmill and outdoor to be a form of meditation. So I guess the mental benefit of steady state cardio is what's been overlooked here in this video :)
Pii Arporniem that’s not what he’s referring to in his critique. He’s referring to people who want to get the maximum benefit of their exercise, but use jogging as their primary means of exercise. You won’t get the most gains by jogging. If you want to jog for relaxation and enjoyment, go for it! (I do) But for those who are trying to get in the absolute best shape possible, jogging isn’t as ideal for that.
As a cyclist jogging is important if you run. It is the same principle as zone 2 training on a bike. At least if jogging is understood as running at a pace you can sustain for a long time and doing just that. The duration is key here. It is also psychologically important because you can't train hard in higher zones every time. Ar least if you don't to get bored or dread your workout.
It's amazing how some trainers can take great forms of training and make them crap, for instance combining heavy deadlifts with cardio, or employing jump rope to a tabata workout. Spot on Jeff! I love sprinting as a form of athletic cardio than can also rip benefits for strength in the long run!
Performance Fitness hey ive had bad experiences with trainers and friends who say they know how to build muscle and strength. They all had me mix cardio with strength train. Ive paid for almost 30 trainers and only 2 of them actually trained me correct
Performance Fitness hi guys maybe u can help me. Jeff said in this video dont mix strength training with cardio. So now im a little bit confused because in this video ua-cam.com/video/vtW6vPxaU-w/v-deo.html ots football workout he created and wrote on the description its a mix of strength and cardio and athletic and its a excactly that. So now i need help to understand that. Does he means dont mix heavy strength training with cardio i mean really heavy weights? Because the weight he uses in the football training there are light weights. But again its still strength and cardio mixed together.
+Betim Alimi That workout he is showing is an interval workout using dumbbells. Dead Lifting is a completely power based workout that is purely focused on strength. Dumbbell circuit workouts are different in that they have a larger focus on cardio and a little strength.
I do jump rope Tabata and I can tell you that you can do it very well. You simply have to get the rope swinging in about the three seconds before your 20 second stint so that you're already jumping at full intensity when it starts. The jump rope guys have a 20 minute workout on it and it's as intense as you want it to be.
I'm sure having jogging and increasing endurance is a total waste of time. Especially if you are in a combat zone and need to travel 6 miles on foot with all your gear. Just sprint the whole way.
no you just can't do it well lool. Im entering boxing soon so i have been doing it for 2.5yrs. Its bs to say everyone that jump ropes gets it. You just have weak legs no offence
Depends on your shoes. Thick soles promote heel striking, which is responsible for most foot issues in runners. And your weight. My gym trainer feels that you should first cut down before serious muscle work as there is much less load on your joints. Check your foot arch, flatter feet have serious issues in running and jumping. Besides, in exercise there is something called recovery, which is where the strengthening happens. That's why you shouldn't train every day.
That's certainly an interesting take on running... only walking or sprinting are smart and any speed in between is dumb? This dude should stick to what he know which clearly isn't cardio.
HIIT on an Airdyne is my favorite, followed by 30 minutes of sauna. I feel like my cardio increased drastically, and find my legs giving out before I’m really gassed out.
Never though of jogging like that. I have often lamented how long my daily jogging routine takes for the amount of fatigue it gives me. Now I have a good excuse to really cut loose and see what my legs can do *and* save time!
Well, Cross Country is competitive running. A lot of casual joggers just slow down to make it from here to there, and don't challenge themselves or their competitors to pick up the pace. I don't think competitive CC counts as jogging since the goal is still the same as sprinting: get from the start to finish line in the least amount of time.
aa aa as a cross country runner I agree, but jogging is still important for basic conditioning with tons of health benefits that this guy in the video apparently doesn’t care about.

Me: "I'm dieting and jogging a lot more, and stretching before every workout."

You shouldnt really stretch before working out, you should warm up though. Stretching “cold” muscles can end up in an injury.

Jogging is actually quite beneficial for improving cardiovascular conditioning and VO2 max as well as endurance if you are training in a Zone 2 range.
That's what was thinkin maybe the only thing I disagree with Jeff. But I think Jeff mean't losing fat jogging is not good.
Most time spent at highest intensity is more important

Unless you have boobs. Then all you need are good shoes and a sports bra. Some shorts might be good, too, but not needed.
Humans are evolved to jog long distances. It’s why we don’t have monkey feet.
I agree completely Virgil!! 3x a week about 8km and that is good for the heart and endurance, it helps me with my weight training too!

People really sleep on aerobic exercise in the muscle world but back when I was a distance runner and wrestler I can't tell you how much cardio helped me against larger guys. 80% of my cardio was not high intensity but I could go for days. It’s weird. Video idea: ultimate guide for stretching ( what/how to stretch during the first night after u hit a muscle group, and also how to stretch them 1-3 days later when ur muscle are sore)
Gaboumachine44 You just stretch. If you workout a muscle 2 times a week, stretch it twice a week. You're overthinking it.
There is actually no research supporting the fact that stretching helps with sore muscles.
Light aerobic exercise and mobility (ROM under load) are two things that will help optimize recovery. With stretching you're essentially just stretching a rubber band.
Stretch before workouts and do recovery after workouts.
Lol.

jogging has been around before this dude was born, you do you bro. don't take any information online the way it is, even this comment
You’re not doing any marathon or running thanks to corona so don’t worry about it anymore
YOU'LL NEVER SEE JEFF SAYING YOU CAN GET RESULTS WITHOUT PAYING HIM FIRST.
juandenz2008 agree
juandenz2008 he mostly just saying that you won't get all of the benefits if you half ass it. A lot of people put limits to what they can do and how lazy they do things.
And 30+ min jogging stimulates eccentric cardiac hypetrophy, HIIT can't. And I think 30-90 min jumping rope is a bit boring (never tried).
Totally agree my dude! This video is purely a generalisation. Even just increasing your TDEE without cardio programming as such will provide results to the average gym-goer!

Anime kids make me *Cringe*
Wtf is goku?
Yeah, the treadmill pushes me past my limit. Fall and get thrown across the gym or get stronger? Lmao i love it!
Yeah this video is fucking retarded. Everyone I wrestled with used jogging for conditioning and wrestlers have incredible cardio
Keep it up, Drago
That’s absolutely awesome!!! Keep moving, your body will be grateful❤️
Good stuff man I hope you don’t mind me asking what kind of activities you did that lead to so much joint pain and complications.
You could also do swimming since it doesnt impact the joints
Finally someone that understands
I second this. I only run on concrete if It's part of a competition I'm running in. When I first started training, I ran on concrete and I got shin splints and ankle strains. Then once I started training on grass, never got injured again
Agreed, treadmills and other cardio machines can be very effective when used with proper form

I disagree with the jogging. I’m a soldier, and jogging (for a great distance) is great for endurance.
Carter Johnson it s great for warm up as well :)
@@sindy113 you dont get the point of HIIT with HIIT you burn calories throughout the day and you will burn more in the moment calories
Sprints are a great way to prepare for endurance too. Plenty of infantrymen use HIIT instead of just running long distances all the time.
I jog the whole time and i feel good that's all it matters to me.
I’m pretty sure he’s wrong about jogging, I’ve lost nearly ten pounds since I started a month ago
@@mrmacross yea it's all personal preference imo
I’m training to join the CAF and you gotta wake up and do a 3km run most days in Basic Training and in general according to legend. If it’s in our soldiers workout regiment, it’s in mine. Sorry Jeff 😅
But then again I’m not looking for gains or to lose fat, I simply need the endurance. The feeling after you almost collapse while basically gasping for air is a good one aswell, makes my brain go :)
That moment when jeff calls crossfit "poorly formed hiit training" lol.
My Highness but that’s not crossfit. They don’t program heavy lifts with cardio. They would do light to moderate lifts with cardio but heavy lifting is done by itself.
tallcip65 my football trainer owns a CrossFit gym and he had us doing that dumb shit.
football training is a lot different than normal everyday crossfit. if you are training for a specific sport like football then it is not dumb. but for the average person that level of intensity is not necessary or advised.
TheBloodySage Seth Rollins
Mostly because of muscle confusion. If you did the same WOD everyday for two weeks before changing it up, you would be fine.
I agree, I have a Bowflex M6 Max Trainer and it's been great for me.
Was about to head to the gym for some cardio, great timing Jeff haha

Uhh.. what if I'm jogging to increase my long term cardio for athleticism? Not just to burn calories?
Jogging has a lot of proven health benefits.
@@tanukimikan5162 Yes, compared to sitting on your ass in the sofa. That does not make it an optimal training method.

As for those locomotion stages I feel like he forgot about "running"
Sprinting is absolute max speed, and if you're doing long distances like in cross country, you're not going to be able to keep up your maximum speed for an hour.
You don't wanna go slow and jog, but you don't want to wear yourself out too soon by sprinting either
I ran cross country in high school, keeping a steady maintainable pace is required for sure, only time you really want to Sprint is the very last part of the course sprinting early will burn you out
All of these are still good for the general population. Carry on.

Tbh I agree with what he is saying but saying jogging is not great cardio is incorrect, maybe for muscle gain and weight loss its not the best. But for general fitness jogging is really good and it does improve your cardio if you go for a long enough time.
Yeah, that was the main gripe I had with the video as well.
Which any good distance runner will definitely be smaller than Jeff but they would kill him in a race of anything over an 800 meter dash.

Flow state? Are you gonna rap or something?
As a cyclist jogging is important if you run. It is the same principle as zone 2 training on a bike. At least if jogging is understood as running at a pace you can sustain for a long time and doing just that. The duration is key here. It is also psychologically important because you can't train hard in higher zones every time. Ar least if you don't to get bored or dread your workout.
at the end of the day, any form of cardio is good. just do cardio
It's amazing how some trainers can take great forms of training and make them crap, for instance combining heavy deadlifts with cardio, or employing jump rope to a tabata workout. Spot on Jeff! I love sprinting as a form of athletic cardio than can also rip benefits for strength in the long run!

@@leonard9624 well I can clearly tell he is sarcastic but, not sure if you are
Jump rope as cardio is very good, but it needs to be done for a while, till you're on fire, with the more intense variations.
well you didn't do it well
well then its your body. I do it and i know plenty boxers and footballers who do it and never heard that
I only got those when i used to sprint in college and i just iced it. Not that big of a deal
no you just can't do it well lool.
Yeah he's basically V-shred.
😅😅 right. I was thinking the same thing.
Jeff: Jogging is the worst.
Cross Country: Am I a joke to you?
Well, Cross Country is competitive running. A lot of casual joggers just slow down to make it from here to there, and don't challenge themselves or their competitors to pick up the pace. I don't think competitive CC counts as jogging since the goal is still the same as sprinting: get from the start to finish line in the least amount of time.
@@mrmacross I just meant long distance running in general. Didn't specify distance or time on purpose.
@@JRH6271 My coach always used to say we are runners and not joggers. There is a difference.
aa aa as a cross country runner I agree, but jogging is still important for basic conditioning with tons of health benefits that this guy in the video apparently doesn’t care about.
