This is a video I put together about superchargers. The roots-style and twin screw look similar on both the inside and outside, but man&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B007ZAQLF6&linkId=222668dffaa95609806ecd299cba5424
Why people think the roots is s a single rotor design just because a single design is called a "twin screw."

Great video. Just facts, no annoying music and accurate info.
Thanks :)

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage hey man I have a question on hoping you can help me with man it's about my 02 Ford Lightning Supercharger.. could you hear me out please..??
Sure. Go ahead and ask it here. I like people to be included on the conversation and see it on the videos :)
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Hey I'm Mike and I have 2 Ford Lightnings swapping my charger casings because my one is ported and Polished and my trucks computer has a tune ,thd other is a 2002 Ford Lightning with 36k miles, Supercharger rotors into my other forward lighting supercharger casing that happens to be ported and polished they are the same im guessimg.?? year I just put new needle bearings in my casing and put it all back together with the low mile rotors in the ported & polished casing because they were like new. Since the first start there was no noise for a while then it started to have an almost grinding or growling noise but now it got louder and I'm not sure if its norma because i was told that the bearings may have to ceet and that the noise would most likely go away after break-in... Now I finished this supercharger a few days ago and I haven't had a chance to drive it and break it in because I'm still building other parts of the truck..The problem is that it has moved back in fourth in my driveway a few times, And I had the supercharger belt hooked up so it was spinning and got warm a few times.. I'm hearing a noise and I'm almost sure definitely is some kind of metal inside actually maybe like a shearing noise..Oh I replaced the coupler also..So the front snout has 36k miles and the bearings didn't seem to have any play in them or the front pulley side either from what I could see wasn't not loose at all... the weird part is I have a stethoscope to the supercharger front back and middle and I can't really tell where it's coming from exactly it doesn't sound like it's coming from the supercharger until you're listening in front of the truck with the hood up.. I removed the belt off the supercharger and hit the gas pedal and the motor revs and the supercharger spins with a nice force if I hold the pulley it will actually make it spin out of my hand just from hitting the throttle.. I was just wondering since you're familiar if youd have any ideas off the top your head without hearing it..?.. But either way I will send you s video if you want of it running so you can hear what I'm talking about I just thought of writing you when I came in the house disgusted..lol.. I Noticed when I pressed the bearings in the casing that they set a little deeper than flush is that normal? And if so how much does it matter if it's Exactly flush or all the way down and bottomed out ?? Hey I just wanted to say thanks again for all the help and I really appreciate this information..
now this is the way to explain no annoying music no fast talking jive no mumbo jumbo THANK YOU THIS IS THE BEST VID.
Nice presentation, I got a lot out of it. Only recommendation would be to leave your graphics on screen for a little longer; I had to pause several times to read the comparison tables and look at the blower diagrams.
Well done, thanks for putting that together.
Kurt Hanson thank you. Good advice
@Pretty Sure
Thank you so much for speaking out to evil people in this world
To Pretty Sure and K me. First off, you guys need to take a closer look. This guy has all kinds of rap stuff on his page, but a nazi looking avatar. It's either humor that we don't get, or some high level trolling, or a bit of both. Secondly, if you want to get technical, he was merely remarking that whites have accomplished a lot in the last 3k years. He didn't say "only" whites, ya'll just saw it that way. It's ok to have black pride or gay pride, but white pride is evil? Yea, this guy having an odd sense of humor is not what's killing our country. It's butthurt liberals looking for any excuse they can to be offended so they can justify calling strangers "evil, racist, asshats". Wake up, guys. You watched a video about superchargers, you've got to be cool. I believe in you.
Great video and great detailed explanation. I have a TVS S/C on my Mustang and also have headers on it and when you talked about the free flowing exhaust and how the pressure would decrease I could totally understand that and imagine that. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I remember back in 67 I had a Chevy 283/301 with a stroker kit, Chrome molly pistons perfect circle rings federal mogul bearings, TRW Lifters, Milled and ported head, straight up flame throwers, and a Bendix (do they still make them) roots supercharger w/ duathermoquads. it was all fed into a muncy four speed and a 4:11 rear. It had only about 500 BHP at the back wheels. It was nice when gas was cheap.
Great video, lots of good information. I had a '97 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with a 3.8L V6 with a Eaton supercharger on it. The first couple of mods I did were a cold air intake and more free flowing exhaust. The first thing I saw was a drop in low end torque just as you suggested. I wasn't thrilled with losing that little bit of low end torque even though I was increasing HP slightly. However, after I put on a smaller supercharger pulley, I got back all of the low end torque plus a very significant increase.
that's the fidget spinner. the inventor must be a time traveller!

Best description of superchargers ever; so thanks for posting!
Thank you very much for watching
Amazing explanation. I've always been ignorant to differences in superchargers, and you explained it perfectly. Like someone else said, the only thing i'd like to see is more pictures/diagrams.
tryhardnoob thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the video. At the time this video was made I only had a 15 minute video allowance on UA-cam, so that's why the clips are few and short. Sorry about that. Thanks for watching!
Awesome stuff, finally something that gets to the point and explains it well
I feel in love with supercharger and thankful for ur vid mustang lifestyle 👍
Thanks for this video. Learned a lot.
Great video. I'm upgrading the factory cooling on my twin screw and this is good to know, thanks.
Great video, really informative. I just installed an HKS Centrifugal Supercharger. After watching this video, I think I may have preferred a twin screw.
I like the twin screw very much, but I’m sure your setup will also make great power. Enjoy!
Great video, i would of just ran out and got a pro-charger, but now looking at how the positive superchargers add instant boost I've reconsidered.
great video. nice explanation. never really had anybody explain like that and actually take the time to do it.one request! more videos lol, especially of your termi. absolutely love them,
Nice video! I had an 87GT with a vortech s trim, a 95 with a turbo, and I'm about to procharge a 2016. I am considering a whipple as well. It's amazing the videos on UA-cam. Especially when people actually know what they are talking about. People don't realize all a motor is, is an air pump. It's volumetric efficiency can only be so good and can only pull so much air. By forcing air and fuel in, we can create a bigger bang and hence more ponies. I like how you explained the aftermarket exhaust would lower boost. Any mod we do to increase the efficiency of the motor will lower boost at the same pulley sizes. Heads, cams, intakes, throttle bodies (after the blower) etc. all increase the efficiency of air flow and lower boost. However does not mean less power.
+Ian Muller I agree. So many people only look at cylinder displacement and don't understand that a blower, better heads, etc are all crucial components that are just as important when making power.
Great video ! excellent explanation of the differences and how they work
SJC Cobra thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Great video! I am now more pleased with my recent Terminator Whipple purchase.

thanks for the video.. very informative.. I'm sold on twin screw.. with headers.. :)
this video is really informative
I've been subbed to your channel for years (via your link to it on SVTP one day), but found this video on a google search. Just wanted to hear the difference between a roots and a twin screw. Nice thorough video!

I love tthe sound of the supercharger , whining. I have a 5..7 hemi. I would like to see a supercharger . I don't have money to buy a hellicat
I had a Civic Si with an aftermarket Roots supercharger kit ( new fuel injectors, new injection and spark maps, new clutch and new exhaust headers/pipes included. There was an increase in horsepower from 200HP to 320! An amazing performer!!
Very good video and explanation. Thanks!

That was a damn good video. I like to watch these types as a refresher. I have to tell you that very few people went over some of the details discussed here. Especially about the boost difference between smaller and larger displacement engines and the overall explanation of boost as a concept of atmospheric pressure. You just earned a new subscriber.
thank you this certainly helped a lot
same here!
Great info, nicely done man.
Austin T thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant 15 minutes of informations.
Thanks for watching
Brilliant!
Best education on SC's yet...
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video
One question which seems to escape the internet, is how much horsepower does each "type" of supercharger require to make similar boost? What RPM's to achieve this boost? Or better yet which type of blower is best used for low RPM torque? If you add methanol injection can you achieve an efficiency close to a turbo?
+beauknowz yes, it's a little hard to calculate other than from the manufacture, but the best way to tell is when you dyno the car. You'll know how much power it makes and can see the end result of each blower and figure which is more efficient. The positive displacement blower will be best for low end power as its platform gives you instant power unlike a centrifugal or turbo
If you want to see forced induction technology at its peak research Mercury Marine Racing Engines. Truly incredible designs. To sustain anywhere from 5500-7000 RPM's in an ocean environment with the motor & boat continually jumping in an out of the water loading and loading the prop and engine, and not cannibalize under that type of stress is an incredible feat of engineering. and they all use positive displacement blowers, preferably the screw types (Whipple).
Very well done. Thanks!
ishvenegas4 glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching

Perfect
Awesome
Great info.
Tim Travasos Thanks for watching
Yes I agree with other when I say awesome video.
Rick Leslie Thanks :)
The big difference between twin screw and a roots is a twin screw compresses the air internally within the supercharger case whereas a roots is just a air pump (just like a fuel or oil pump) and doesn't compress air, boost comes from packing air into the intake manifold.
Love the video good info
Thank you. Very useful.
Thanks for watching. Have a great new year
good video. very informational
Andrew Wallace thanks for watching
Great info some fools brag on boost pressure. That’s no a bragging point sometimes.
Very informative and detailed information. Kudos to you Danny. Do you have any detailed information laid out in a video about the O3 / 04 mach 1 like you do the cobras? Thanks again, your knowledge is appreciated.
Great video!!
Are certain style of supercharger better whether you have fuel injected vs carbureted?
I learned alot thanks
dee pharrow Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Then there are the new CVT style Supercharger's that adjust the ratio's on the fly of the poly to the engine RPM for optimal boost at almost any RPM. See Procharger i1 :-)
agent5y prochargers lag. tvs Is the best way to go on a street application
The i1 has the ability to shift the ratio of its CVT belt so there is essentially, no lag. At the end of the day it's belt driven and CVT optimized. Read about it.
agent5y pro chargers lag. and they don't hit as hard down low.
It will suffer under heavy loads or demands as does the CVT trans do in cars. I think a blow off valve will help to regulate pressure as did does in turbo charging
The wastegate is the primary pressure regulator for a turbocharger, not the blow off valve. Using a bypass or blow off valve to relieve air pressure for an air mass you've already pumped and heated ends up being less efficient that just avoiding pumping excess air through a compressor in the first place, thus why turbocharged vehicles tend to retain high fuel economy and why you don't see any factory centrifugal superchargers. For normal centrifugal superchargers they don't have much choice but to use a blow off valve for pressure regulation. Positive displacement superchargers also use internal bypass valves to avoid paying too much of an efficiency penalty out of boost.
CVT centrifugal sounds interesting but it also seems like a complex, reliability-killing, expensive bandaid given how newer positive displacement superchargers have caught up on efficiency and modern electronics and DI have cut lag on turbos.
great vid
When using a positive displacement supercharger, more engine speed equals more airflow and not necessarily more boost pressure. this is an important point.
Great video ..
you're the man
Thanks
Nice presentation Danny. Nice whipple Cobra too!
tominator Nice. Love my whipple!
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Love mine too! Torque up the wazoo!! lol
god. Thankyou!!!!!!
Great job
Thank you.
quick question Danny, I have an 04 Cobra w/ TVS and return fuel system. I am having an issue where the car will sometimes hesitate at low RPM under load. All ignition components are original. Car has 70K miles. I recently changed plugs to NGK, can't remember the model but it's what the tuner suggested. Problem still persists. No codes are thrown. Do you think this could be a COP issue? If not what do you think could be the problem? Any advice appreciated. Thx.
Yes, I would bet on it being the coil packs that go on the plugs. Very common, especially with that milage. I would get FORD OEM Motorcraft ones.
Great video very informative. No b.s. just good solid information.
Very good video. I knew a lot of this already, but it's always nice to get a refresher :) It's impossible to deny that the twin-screw is more efficient than the Roots style, however I must say that I prefer the whine of the Roots-style units (especially when they are ported ;) ) The Roots units are also usually cheaper than the twin-screws. Either one will serve you well, and put a smile on your face :) The only one I don't like is the centrifugal! Sure, they are usually cheaper, but I can't stand that sound...
crazyfvck I can't really tell much difference the difference between roots & twin screw unless it's the really crazy like 10:1+ roots blowers that wail like a banshee!
crazyfvck Also, what sound?! That's what I am most saddened by on centrifugals is they're so quiet! Once you put your foot in it, the noise goes away, drowned out entirely by the engine and exhaust! Turbo gets massive whistle, roots gets the wail, screws get the whine, and centrifugal has a high pitched whine at idle that disappears as your foot hammers down... no fun.
This video is very helpful.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Scrun Johnson This saved me lots of trouble with modifying a truck. After watching this video, I found out that I want a roots supercharger. I WAS gonna go with Procharger, but I don't want a centrifugal supercharger. I want instant power as soon as I hit the gas pedal. Now, I'll get a Whipple supercharger. But, Procharger is still great.
+George GMC Sierra Denali great.yes, I like the positive displacement blowers better for that reason too. I feel you can't extract the full potential of a centri or a turbo without running an extreme fuel setup. Positive displacements are much more fun IMO
Scrun Johnson Yup. And turbos are better for top speed because they ain't belt driven so they don't use engine power to run and the higher the speed of the engine, the higher the speed of the turbo, so producing more power. LOL, finally I'm talking to somebody that speaks my language.
Wipple's are twin screw.....better than roots
Cool video
Thank you
great video
+Deon Woods thanks. Thanks for watching
Great video
Thanks! I really had to cut it down on time and didn't give the centrifugal blower enough credit or facts
Really good video. Thanks.
nice video!
bahama man thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
I used to think I wanted a supercharged engine until I drove n/a cars for a while and realized 99.9% of the time you're high enough in the rpms to benefit from a turbo much more on the cars I like to drive and then having drove both I own a turbo car because it makes its power across a huge rpm range and doesn't fall on its face above 4 grand like most supercharged engines
Newer superchargers don’t fall of at higher rpm. Turbos are best for automatic transmission cars. What I didn’t like about the Subaru I drove was it felt like someone else was reaching over and stepping on the gas pedal without me wanting that once the turbo came on at 2,500rpm. I constantly had to drive lower or always higher to keep it in boost or out of boost. Not a fan.
Very informative. Wish you could have continued just a little more when you got the 4 cylinder.
John Roth At the time youtube limites my videos to 15 minutes. This video came out to 14:59 😀
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage You did a great job. Thanks for the reply. ;-)
I have a 2015 GT 5.0L Convertible Automatic and I want to boost it for daily driving.
It's nice to blow away all challengers except the occasional Hellcat. So what type of S/C would be best? I don't beat the shit out of the car all the time, just occasionally when a challenger wants to see what she will do. A Whipple 2.9? What engine mods should I make so I don't blow it up? Steel gears, oil pump? What about lowering the stock compression a little? I run 93 non-ethanol continuously, never used anything else. Run Ford full synthetic too.
Any thoughts please?
the way you described the rotation of the screws means discharge in at the top and suction is at the bottom which does not make sense since the engine is below the supercharger
The supercharger displaces airflow into the intake manifold, and then into the engine. Depending on the design of the supercharger and intake manifold, air may flow “up” as it makes its way around the supercharger case (roots) or even up through the intake manifold runners after passing through the intercooler. Also, the new supercharger like on the 2020 GT500 is inverted
Nice job, well done. I think at the end you looking for "volume" of air in the intake manifold produced by each revolution of the blower. so smaller intake volume is crammed with the same volume of air each blower rpm resulting in higher intake manifold pressure. I knew what you meant. Something I had not considered was the headers lowering boost. Totally makes sense but I don't have a boost gauge to watch on my Riviera. lol I have faster cars but it's the only one with a blower. Also, watched lots of cars at the track and there was a LT1 Camaro like I had at the time. it was auto and mine stick but either way. I could tell I could out 60' him and maybe hold him to the 8th mile because it was not noticeable faster than other stock lt1 auto car out of the hole. Then is sounded like around 4500 I'd guess it started pulling hard and was really moving hard like you wanted to se from a supercharged car...... and then it shifted, killed boost, start over. Was terrible. About not worth doing imo. I can't recall what it ran but think it was high 12 or low 13. OH, I almost forgot it had a centrifugal s/c. I always thought a manual trans car would be much better suited to that type of s/c. I wonder if you can drive them faster and get the boost earlier but blow off what you don't need as rpm increase?
Negative pressure is Not suction, although most laymen see it that way.Neg pressure creates a vacuum in the cylinder that the positive atmosphere fills.
Great video. What is you view on the Venom Cooler?
+Bob Maslen yeah, that's a good idea to cool the snout/bearings.
Very informative thank you. I just got a 2016 mustang gt and am trying decide between the Roush stage 2 and the Whipple supercharger. Seems like the Whipple is the better choice from a performance standpoint but the Roush has a Ford factory warranty. Still undecided!
Both will be good blowers. With the newer 5.0s having high compression you won't need to run a lot of boost to make big power
In Australia we are getting ~520hp at the wheels with a 1.9l Harrop on a Coyote block @8psi. Love em hey! No intercooling either.
+mercury bullet yeah, some of the aftermarket kits don't even use an intercooler because the charge temps are low enough. In a way it's good that the Cobras were using the hotter eaton because now I have a more efficient whipple and it will even run better. The new roots style are better with heat too
Ours is an oem setup for the FGX Falcon. FPV spent $40 million on the design. Codenamed Miami (as opposed to a Coyote) if you want to look it up.
Nice video bro
Denny Ramsey Thanks!
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage you to bro.
Subbed and liked the vid. I have a 428 SCJ with a BDS 8/71 , Thinking on buying a Roots type Hampton or Littlefield 10/71 do I need to worry about excessive heat with larger displacement blower??
Very awesome video i will def have to re watch this alot of information going in. haha. So im guessing my Roush M90 is a roots as well? Correct me if im wrong.
Yes, I do believe it's also a roots.
yes your roush m90 blower is a roots style its a eaton 90 rebranded by jack roush its a 90 cubic inch supercharger with a 3 lobe rotor design with a 60 degree twist or helix design hope this info helps
Very much so Jacob really appreciate your help man!
+R GEN no problem man anytime
I wonder if you've heard of placing a clutch on a supercharger similar to the way an air conditioner turns on and off. I want my 1.4 chevy engine to forever get away from turbos. Any ideas?
Personally I just want to know which on makes more noise but I’m
Enjoying my time with this presentation so far it’s not like I’m getting this much from anywhere else so😂
You may like this video. Stock eaton was loudest (turns out the louder the LESS efficient) ua-cam.com/video/PQXpdxAxdRQ/v-deo.html
Which one is stronger and can handle an aggressive driving and drive for long time without break. roots or twin screw ?
Both are reliable
But whats the difference between roots and twinscrew in drivability does the torque come right away in both or one u need to rev more or there exactly the same just the roots gets more hot
With equal generation and performance roots vs twin screw blowers you don't notice any difference between the two. They are both positive displacement design and function the same in that regard. No spooling delay.
I always thought any type of supercharger has the power as soon as you hit the gas but apparently the centrifugal type is just like a turbo it has a little bit of a lag Makes sense. I would go with the 1 that creates less heat. But I really don’t know what I’m talking about and don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to experiment with
Are the superchargers I've seen on the pulling trucks that stick way up in the air,or the ones in the NHRA different than the ones you've just explained ? Or, are they in fact the same, just on a much grander scale? Thanks!!!!
KY KRaZY yes, those appear to be positive displacement roots or twin screw blowers, which makes a lot of sense for instant, low end torque
Now here's the interesting question. Once you install that larger exhaust and your boost drop, will your power drop as well?
I know the answer, but how many actually do...
Boost is a measure of restriction, so power will rise as boost drops. Efficiency is increased. Typically when you “increase boost” such as a smaller supercharger pulley, you’re not making the power from more restriction, but rather from more airflow, which ends up being restricted in the manifold and boost pressure increases.
Precisely, Very good answer.
I'm trying to understand...I'm a layman wit this stuff, but I find it really interesting. Atmospheric pressure measures at 14.7 lbs at sea level. That said; does that then mean that the efficiency of a blower will keep the the manifold pressure at it respective atmospheric pressure no matter what altitude you are at?
It will increase the pressure at any altitude, but you won't get the full boost pressure once you're up too high, and if you still are able to make full boost, you will have the same manifold pressure but it won't be full of oxygen, but rather the other elements that are found higher in the atmosphere (probably nitrogen?). So if the car makes 17 psi at sea level, you have 17 psi more than the 14.7 found at sea level. If you were at 10,000 MSL (mean sea level) and the car was still able to make "17 PSI" it would most likely be 17 psi of pressure, but with less oxygen. Oxygen is the real key to this equation. More oxygen is the Reason behind nitrous, as it increased the oxygen from 21% to about 33%
