This head was painted in several layers with some days break between the sessions. After the underpainting with brown colours I added some white to create more volume. The next layer was thick impasto paint. After that there where two layers of glazing.

Beautiful work! Thanks for sharing this absolutely fascinating technique! I've always been curious how the old masters achieved such glowing results. 👏 Bravo!

Very impressive. Do you think you can make a video step by step to show the entire process? I find it very interesting your approach and I don’t see anyone doing what you do. I admire your determination and commitment and personally very inspiring. Thank you and I wish you the best. Blessings and be safe.

    Marvelous.
If I am not mistaken, you used Burnt Umber(?) and Titanium White(?) for your underpainting. So would you say that it is also a good alternative to paint a "Brunaille" and then simply add coloured glazes on top and are the amiith transitions achieved by glazing? I tried painting with black and white grisailles, but since I'm trying to only use glazing for the colouring process, I've been searching for a suiting alternative.

It was burnt umber and lead white, I don´t use titanium white - don´t even have one. So if you paint with a brunaille underpainting instead of grisaille, the skintones will become much warmer. Brunaille is similar to the technique of many of the big 16th and 17th century Masters. So if you want your paintings to get this look, it´s an alternative to grisaille.
Or you can mix it and do all the shadow areas in brunaille and the lighter areas in grisaille. Does also make a great effect.

@@oldmasterpaintings5070 What differences have you found between Titanium White and Lead White?
