  • Daan De Marrée gets a lot of poach blocks, infact he has a unique style of getting poach blocks that makes him one of the smartest defenders in the World. Thanks to Ulti.tv and Ultiworld for the footage we used in this video. This is the last time we're making a vid about Daan/Belgium for a while ... well maybe.

Would love to see some kind of comparison of poach styles. For example: Daan vs Ben Katz vs Johnny Bansfield

Interesting choice to include a zone defense point in a video about poaching.
He still seems pretty good tho.

excellent but it is not only Daan De Marrée's work, his team works very well on Poaching.

I think it's because he's faster than me

If you're not poaching, you're not defending. At high levels, 1v1 the offense will win every time. This is probably what I would call "old school" style poaching - implying that you're clearing but also assuming the open side throw is still coming next from someone else. The thrower will frequently mentally discount you as their first look clears - freeing you up to scan for the next cut.

Your thesis is that this is unique among top level Ultimate players. I strongly disagree with this thesis, based on having seen this type of defensive ability in many top-level players for the past 25 years. You could have simply called this video 'clips of a few poach blocks' and it would have been fun to watch, but the analysis is factually incorrect. -Ben Wiggins

Ben you need to chill. Daan's defence stands out in the matches that he's playing in, and Noah is taking a closer look and giving us some thoughts as to why. There's no need to reduce his analysis down to one comment and get defensive about it. Personally I think there should be plenty more talking about awareness and creative defence, as there is plenty of room for improvement in that area for most players, including many elite players.

@@FelixUltimate I feel pretty chill about this.
The headline and this statement ("infact he has a unique style of getting poach blocks"), as well as the analysis, imply an understanding of the state of Ultimate that is not true, and lacks historical context. If you'd like to post videos that are titled "We like this cool thing", great. Nobody is discounting your right to post what you like, and nobody is discrediting the player in any way, and nobody is saying there isn't room for discussion of defensive creativity; that's three strawmen you've put up in just one paragraph. But the words aren't true, and now I've reminded you of that.
If you don't want comments, simply disable them on your videos. Good day.

@@fishpractices I can't believe I stumbled upon a Ben Wiggins comment here. Love it. I was thinking exact same thing but in no way could have expressed it as eloquently or with as much authority as yourself. There are many, many examples from just your world class team and Furious at that sane time that could make a better poach D highlight reel than this. And that's not taking anything away from Daan De Marrée, he's a stud and i'm excited to keep watching him play.

Just to follow up on what Ben said, this is actually a microcosm of what frustrates a lot of people about Hive Ultimate analysis. Much of it is quite good, but much of it comes with the subtext (or in this case, fairly explicit text) that elite ultimate is strategically backward and past coaches and thinkers never understood the things that Hive is talking about.

I agree with most of what your saying but this style of play does seem very risky.

it's not risky if you trust your teammates :) you can see it clearly at 3:35. He has no doubt that one teammate covers his receiver deep

Think most people including me at an amateur level have thought about this sort of thing and at times even gambled on getting an interception this way - with mixed results. The only difference between us and people like this guy is athleticism. That's it. You can have the brains of a World games player but be let down by your kind of okay performing regional club level athleticism.
