The Captured Live album was recorded at the Oakland Coliseum. I only lived one town over in 1976 but missed this one. As someone pointed out one of the greatest live performances ever captured on a recording device. Thanks for the video.
I had a chance to see this show at the Philly spectrum-Johnny you are the greatest. I waited out back where the limousine came out and it stopped in front of me. I reached my hand in and told Johnny he was the best. He shook my hand and said"thanks man". so humble
I saw Johnny and Edgar together July 24, 1976. Awesome outdoor show in Wyoming MI. 20,000 people with REO, Heart, Starz and a few others. Was all of 14 years old. RIP Johnny and Richard Hughes, and Randy Jo Hobbs.
This is how I will always remember Johnny Winter. Long white hair swinging around, running around the stage and driving the crowd crazy. I like the videos that show close ups of his hands while playing. I still amazed that anyone's fingers could move that fast. He was, is, and always will be the best. RIP to the greatest guitar hero of all time.
A few other in that list, Gary moore, Allman, Roy Buchanan, Rory Gallagher and perhaps one white guy that was a forerunner to all of these guys : Mike Bloomfield. All are great in their own way but will say Johnny had a raw sound to his music
Johnny always gave you your money's worth. Stuffed a lotta notes into each lead, yet check out his rhythm playing too! First Floyd jams, with Johnny's very inventive rhythm backing him. Then Johnny tears it up, followed by the two leads intertwined... while the rhythm section keeps the song on track. Finally he wraps up the verse, and you've been served! Add this to the fact that he's naturally an unusual looking man, it puts most modern music shows to shame!
Johnny will always be the man saw him many times no one better than Johnny in his prime this album “captured live “ did it for me taught me everything I know about playing guitar and lovin Gibson firebirds RIP JW and thanks for the great memories
this is my personal fave period of Johnny's career. Richard and Randy were one of the best rhythm sections and Floyd Radford is on fire for 3 choruses of tasty lead, then Johnny takes over. pure awesome. plus bonus phase shifter. A lot of folks hate the 70's swirl but i prefer the phase to the chorus he used in later years. Go, Johnny, Go!
Undeniably the best album of 1976!!! This one was literally scorched into my brain through repeated listenings while cranking the speakers up to eleven!!!
I pretty much wore out my Captured Live LP and was later able to find it on CD. Really enjoyed seeing this concert clip! That Floyd Radford was a really good guitarist to be able to share a stage with Johnny!
I am very happy to say I seen that tour twice another & 20 times in my life also never to be again. Simply the Best blues man ever walk the face of the Earth he could rock your ass all of the same time.
I saw Johnny Winter in San Diego during this tour. It was one of the shows included on the Captured Live album. It was also one of the shows that the Together album drew from. No one knew about both bands playing together until they were setting up. This was the best concert I saw during this time.
I've known Johnny for 24 years and he's a great guy and a good honest down to Earth person. Never knew Randy, but I have friends who knew him and they all said he was a real nice guy. Maybe you caught him in a bad mood which we all get in now and then or maybe it was the dope. If you met him the next night you might have had a different impression of the guy. By the way Johnny is clean now and tearing it up again like he used to.
Really one of the great rock and roll concerts ever..Floyd Redford on the other guitar.....I think Caldwell on drums ...who was with captain beyond....great concert...Aragon ballroom 1976....crazy audience crazy party
You're soooo right! This has to be one of the three guitar ultra freakout discs of all time! ANY guitarhead NEEDS this record. Worth the price for Highway 61 and Sweet Papa John alone!
The first time I saw him was back in the 70's at the "Orlando Sports Stadium". He came back for 4 encores!... 4! They finally turned all the lights on and announced while he was still playing for everybody to leave.
We saw Johnny earlier this month (8-14-08) and I gotta say, We've been following you around since 1970 and "Thanks for being the best and thanks for autographing my guitar". FUCKIN' "A" !!!!!
The back cove of the live album was shot at the Oakland Coliseum Day on the Green. I was there for that show. One of the all time blues greats. I went through several albums learning how to play his tunes. Fast and soulful.
I have to professionally challenge that. The back cover was not at Oakland's Day on the Green #6...I was there, Sept '75, too. Randy had a fresh haircut that day. The back photo was probably taken in San Diego or at another stadium on that tour. If you notice his hair on the back cover, his hair was longer! Great concert!!!
Hey hammerhead, Yes, In My Professional Opinion, I agree with you. The album back cover shot is the Oakland Coliseum @ Day on the Green. I know, because I was there. When I bought the album, in the store (The Wherehouse?) I immediately was able to identify myself in the crowd. If you still have the album, look to the back of the drummer's head (Richard Hughes). Approximately, @ the 10'oclock position, ⅜" of an inch to the left of the mic. stand, that's me. My right elbow is sticking out to the side. I'm wearing the copper belt buckle that I made in highschool just a few months earlier. I stood on top of the cooler all day long. Doing air guitar, & air harmonica. I had loose, waist length red hair, wearing a navy blue, long sleeve, "fit-style" shirt (nearly identical to what Rick Derringer wore). That's why I stand out above the masses. Back then, you were allowed to bring Anything in! We (my 3 friends & I) brought in a full-sized cooler with deli sandwiches & 8 glass quarts of Olde English 800 malt liquor!!! I was the oldest @ 17 y.o. amongst the 4 us. What kept me awake was the "whites" that I had in the pocket of my Levi "Superbells". As I recall, at some point they had to momentarily stop the concert. Some guy had climbed the "Foul ball" pole w/screen. I guess being impatient, some of the crowd started to chant, "Jump. Jump. Jump." Over the PA, they asked the crowd to stop the "Jump" chant. I had already seen Johnny Winter @ Bill Graham's Winterland concert venue 2-3 times & continued to see Johnny Winter @ Winterland for the next few years... Just to wrap things up, if I recall correctly, after that concert, coolers were no longer allowed. Due to the fact that more than one cooler was dropped accidentally/intentionally from the Upper Deck...
This is Johnny in his prime - the version i saw him do on the pier in '80 in nyc - i will never forget - like on the captured live album - he did this strumming after he says "check this out" and his arm was moving up and down so fast it was a blur from over his head to down to his knees - it was so incredible that you could hear individual notes in addition to the strumming (only Winter). People were jumping up so high and going crazy they were falling thru the bleachers
I remember it was a real long concert. They kept stopping for recording purposes. Hotter than hell in there no way to even get to the water. The 3 came out at the end did a set w a cpl o their bandmates. Priceless!
Amen! ALSO worth the price for Highway 61 Revisited. Just incredible. Guitar freaks, do yourselves a favor: find this record and put it into permanent rotation!
Johnny your the best ever , unsurpassed creativity in your solos . This was the best band you ever had. Listen how the other guitarist gels with Johnnys playing.Unbelievable!
That's Floyd Radford. He's on Captured Live. One of my ALLTIME favorite 2- Guitar bands. You can hear what they both play even even they go off and jam together!!!
+Vince ReDavid i love love love Floyd. He is just on fire and a great complement to Johnny. Always tasty when he's comping or flying fast, Floyd Radford is the bomb.
What a great video. Some of my best memories of my life were watching Johnny, Edgar and the rest. Man could they play loud too. Back in the days, if you got there early, a lot of shows were general admission. I got down in front more than once to see these guys and couldn't hear for the rest of the week LOL. Absolute Bliss!
I saw Johnny on this tour at Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino. I guess they used some of the audio for Captured Live, one of my top 5 favorite albums. Edgar and Rick Derringer were also on the bill. Great show. I remember watching Johnny thinking I never got to see Hendrix but this was as close as I was ever going to get.
This was one kickin' band Johnny had @ the time. Randy Jo Hobbs- Bass Richard Hughes -Drums (sadly would later commit suicide) Floyd Radford - Lead Guitar Next to the "And" lineup with Derringer, Bobby Caldwell this is my fave lineup.
yea i have been listening to captued for years and its a thrill to see this footage. This was johnnys best band. better than the live with derrenger. Floyd radford is indredible. could have played lead in any of the bands of this era. EASY !
flotd radford could have played lead in any 70's rock band of his day. he is featured on captured live. he does tons of kick ass leads and allows johnny to do crazy rythum work. then radford tries to upstage johnny with his rythums. floyd radford is just a great guitar player and thats that..
I think it was a Leslie. Not a phase shifter Johnny used. Neal Schon Used one as well in his early jam days. This was an insane tour. I stood in front. Didn’t know who to watch at times. So great!
have Johnny to thank for introducing us white boys from new jersey to the blues with "johnny winder and live" in the early 70's. After that, it was early fleetwood mac with peter green, SRV, chuck berry, buddy guy, and finally, the "best" there ever was and ever will be, rory gallagher, who played like a man possessed with a blues demon.
@GreatGardenGnome I agree on that. Floyd Radford are really showing it all here, how it's gonna be. But as U wrote, The And-line up comes in front of it. Derringer and Caldwell skilled musicians of their own quality...
yeah, I knew of Marino, and enjoyed what little he had out at that tine, but, IMHO, I don't think his "sound" won over as many fans. BTW, theres some great footage of Marino and Mahogany Rush on youtube!!
"Bony Moronie" was on the SECOND WINTER album; one of Johnny's best. Also I must disagree with a poster who called Johnniy a "rock n' roller". The man could and did play rock and roll throughout his career for sure, but he was first and foremost a blues guitarist (and an incredible slide player). Listen to his first two albums: PROGRESSIVE BLUES EXPERIMENT and JOHNNY WINTER; solid 100 percent blues...
Captured Live--what an album, what a band, what a time! Johnny Winter rest in peace and thank you for all your contributions
This vintage footage is amazing!!!!! Thank you!!!!
The Captured Live album was recorded at the Oakland Coliseum. I only lived one town over in 1976 but missed this one. As someone pointed out one of the greatest live performances ever captured on a recording device. Thanks for the video.
Captured Live. One of the most underrated live albums EVER. Put this on on a hot Sumer day..and crank it !
I burned that album up. Saw Johnny on that tour. To this day Highway 61 live was my all time greatest concert performance!! Johnny was on fire!!
First car when this was new, '67 Ford Falcon with a decent 8 track stereo.
Good times.
Our drummer almost drove off the road when diggin' to the groove on Highway 61 rev.
There's that underrated
Word.My ass.
@@billridge7854 you're underrated.

"Saints & Sinners" was one f*cking killer of and album!! No question he set the pace in the 70's.
love .love love love love.......
Greatest blues-rock guitarist of the 70s.
Of all time
Classy Johnny notes. You can always tell blindfolded it's johnny
EA H hell yeah me too
Johnny is the best all round white blues guitarist. When you listen to him playing rock 'n'roll the blues oozes out. No other Slinger can do this.
Certainly Great, I like Peter green from Fleetwood Mac as well.
A few other in that list, Gary moore, Allman, Roy Buchanan, Rory Gallagher and perhaps one white guy that was a forerunner to all of these guys : Mike Bloomfield. All are great in their own way but will say Johnny had a raw sound to his music

This man is the real deal. In his heyday,
he was the King.
Amazing, bought the album when I lived in Bangkok 76-77, 16 yrs old, still have it but its worn...Best live album ever according to me.
In the 70's, fhis is how we ROLLED ! Saw Johnny many times and he always tore it up! one of his best lineups!
this is my personal fave period of Johnny's career. Richard and Randy were one of the best rhythm sections and Floyd Radford is on fire for 3 choruses of tasty lead, then Johnny takes over. pure awesome. plus bonus phase shifter. Tight
Yeah I’m with you...love the phaser twirl...
Undeniably the best album of 1976!!! This one was literally scorched into my brain through repeated listenings while cranking the speakers up to eleven!!!

I saw him once in 1974 it was awesome, He truly entertains!
Saw johnny every year he lived... i never saw this concert. It kills me I missed the few special years
Really one of the great rock and roll concerts ever..Floyd Redford on the other guitar.....I think Caldwell on drums ...who was with captain beyond....great concert...Aragon ballroom 1976....crazy audience crazy party

I saw this show when they stopped in Dayton Ohio ‘76. Then saw the Johnny and Edgar tour he’s talking about in 78-79👍😎
Saw these guys around this time. Best concert I ever saw. Floyd left not long after and went into engineering.
Highway 61 is the greatest slide I've ever heard, Live version, never get tired hearing it ............. Gw
No question about that the combination of Floyd Bradford and Johnny together is the best sound Johnny Winters ever had
Floyd complimented Johnnys playing. They both kicked serious ass. Whole band fucking incredible! Still have on vinyl and Johnny is still no. 1!
Floyd Radford had no trouble taking over Rick Derringer's role as Johnny's foil. R.I.P. Randy Jo Hobbs & Richard Hughes!
saw johnny and lynyrd skynyrd oakland day on the green 1977 best damn concert ever!!!!!!!
Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, California, I was right down front..
The Man in His Prime, Amazing Footage, Thank You.
he still is the king!
yaaaaaaah This is how I will remember John Dawson Winter III
This was one kickin' band Johnny had @ the time.
Randy Jo Hobbs- Bass
Richard Hughes -Drums (sadly would later commit suicide)
Floyd Radford - Lead Guitar
Next to the "And" lineup with Derringer, Bobby Caldwell this is my fave lineup.
I saw Johnny Edgar and Rick Derringer bands at San Bernardino Swing Auditorium In 76. What a Showman!
Dynamic guitar player!!!___----___-----ONE THE BEST!!!
i go to watch this genius when ever i get a chance
he is just wonderfull in this too
I've seen Johnny 12 times and once with Edger. Jim
Great tour that was
Saw this tour!! loved it
This is my all time favorite #1 live Album ever....Next to Foghat Live......
On the back of Captured Live is a photo of the Oakland Coliseum one of the day on the green shows ... It was a great show.
R.I.P. Johnny. You're one of the greatest Guitar Players.
yea i have been listening to captued for years and its a thrill to see this footage. This was johnnys best band. better than the live with derrenger. Floyd radford is indredible. could have played lead in any of the bands of this era. EASY !
day on the green ... blowing down the house ... never forget it
ICON.
i love that number from winter
Master of the Blues
Floyd Radford was an awesome guitar player too|
well they were all incredible richard and randy jo too
i saw this tour day on the green, the photo on the back of the album
LIVE: At Palais des Sports, Paris, France (28 Oct 1974). "Bony Moronie" (Larry Williams).
❤King Tudor number one.
the closest I ever got to Texas royalty was jamming with Doyle Bramhall II in a tiny oyster joint ... needless to say that boy can play
great
I would like to see all of Johnny with the captured live line up
flotd radford could have played lead in any 70's rock band of his day. he is featured on captured live. he does tons of kick ass leads and allows johnny to do crazy rythum work. then radford tries to upstage johnny with his rythums. floyd radford is just a great guitar player and thats that..
Without question floyd is super love him love johnny this album is awesome
Great upload! IMHO Floyd Radford was the best "2nd guitarist" Johnny ever had.
Pity there's no "official" footage/DVD from this tour.
saw this tour @ Jenison/MSU
I think it was a Leslie. Not a phase shifter Johnny used. Neal Schon Used one as well in his early jam days. This was an insane tour. I stood in front. Didn’t know who to watch at times. So great!
i have this lp great w/ Floyd Raford on co-lead guitar..great lp to jam to..
BLUESNISIMO, SWEET PAPA JOHNNY WHAT MORE CAN YOU DO?
Dude Rocked The Shorts Off Every Bodey
Captured live album 👍👍
Wow, Floyd Radford tears it up!!
@2468oldschooltimes
it's THE guitar Johnny got famous for: Gibson Firebird
Yes, for me all too true, so f***g Great
have Johnny to thank for introducing us white boys from new jersey to the blues with "johnny winder and live" in the early 70's. The “After And” band!
Floyd Radford has some big shoes to fill replacing Rick Derringer in Johnny's 70's "rock band" lineup and he did VERY well.
SO GREAT FLOYD RADFORD
I see Ricky Derringer is there as well playing that solo
Where has this video been and is there more?? Damn
Some of the soloing in this clip probably Floyd Radford?
the white Firebird is a '76....this is from '76....they never made those before '76....it was the 'bi-centennial model'-
sorry-
This is from 1974 tour, not 1976.
A Firebird 5; 2 pickups with crown inlays in the neck.
I think thats Edgar Winter on the board..
Bryce Janey I thought so too.
Most definitely him
yeah, I knew of Marino, and enjoyed what little he had out at that tine, but, IMHO, I don't think his "sound" won over as many fans.
BTW, theres some great footage of Marino and Mahogany Rush on youtube!!
of course it is
sick riff
