How to Minecraft (2014-2019) was most likely the dominant SMP of the dark ages of Minecraft. I remember that each of the six seasons it ran for were always pretty consistent popular. Iirc, it was sort of a popular alternative to the badlion uhc, MCSG, and hypixel content that dominated the era back then. Dark era content was mostly PvP because minecraft updates didn't age much of value to make survival fun to watch and or play.
I stuck around the DreamSMP mainly because of the roleplay. I don't know if the other SMP's had the same aspect, but the fact that after Wilbur joined they started organizing plots and storylines with scripts and people playing characters drove by immaterial motivations rather than just competition to see who is the strongest, was really something that I miss. I still remember how cool was it that Tommy or Quackity would go on to do their character's projects even if they were wearing some iron boots and having only stolen items on them, to move the story forward, yet you still had Technoblade (RIP king) or Ph1lza who you could watch if you wanted to see them grinding as the pros they were.
It was good video I feel like one smp that didn’t get mentioned was Mianite. Unless Mianite isn’t classified as a SMP, but that was one of the servers that showed what was truly possible with live streaming a server.
As a hermit craft guy, I liked dsmp and still occasionally watch lifesteal, but man i do love me some HoImYcWaF!!! ( good job if you know who coined that)
I think the scripted videos (or at least the popular ones) stopped because they either moved on with their lives or had moved to non scripted content and since there has to be quite a few people it probably wasn’t worth it anymore.
I don't know if anyone remebers the "How2Minecraft" SMP/Series around 2015, it sort of filled a gap in minecraft content that was not Hypixel related. The youtubers on there are some of the biggest Creators on the platform today and have mostly moved on from Minecraft including people like Preston, JeromeASF, Lachlan, Ali-A, BajanCanadian, Vikkstar123, PeteZahutt etc. I know not everyone watched this but I think it had a relatively big impact on the community at the time, especially because interest in Minecraft was fading
absolutely!! HTM was a BIG deal if you watched anything minecraft related back then. people like team crafted werent doing smps but they were all friends with and collabed with the pack + pete/choco who were on HTM, making it super popular. you couldnt go anywhere without it being mentioned. really surprised its not on here.
Your presentation and charachter is great, and you have a decently good voice. I'm looking forward to more videos like this and probably the more mainstream ones as well, a bit more research would be nice next time.
i used to be on a server called the awaken smp, but i only ended up posting one video because i tried to do everything in legit survival, whereas everyone else was just making their videos with commands. i just stopped posting minecraft altogether cus it got boring and later started this channel
Amazing content tho, i can guarantee you that this will hit millions and millions of views, so informative, entertaining and well put. Rise to the sky SkyBoi. ❤
Nice video! To be honest, there is a funny problem with small SMPs - Lifesteal SMP Made the idea of SMPs so big, that people kinda lost the meaning of SMP and now for them its just "kill, grief, team, betray".
5:56 I mean there was definitely more to the rot, but I really think the end of the server was because of technoblades death, even if it was rotting anyway if he had lived then the server definitely would have chugged along longer RIP.
Another reason why hermitcraft is so popular is because hermitcraft member have friends and are in other amps like empires or life series expanding to a wider audience
I feel like you should've talked about Grian's life series (3rd life, Last life, Double life and Limited life). It's sort of like lifesteal, but with people who aren't very good at pvp. It's something that definitely should've been mentioned. Good video nonetheless.
In my opinion, the hermitcraft, is the best style of smp content. Its just so fun when Grian, Mumbu Jumbo, Bdubs or (insert gigachad music) Ethoslab uploads and it just them building, farming, mining, or just pranking or playing games with eachother.
More so than the reasons mentioned in the video, the biggest reason for the Dream SMP going downhill was because Covid started to ease up. While everyone was in lockdown, UA-cam and twitch blew up in terms of active users per day. That brought the perfect opportunity for the dream SMP to blow up. Then you include the storylines. Once the major storylines ended, and the world opened back up, that’s when the Dream SMP closed down
Great video, although you did forget about some SMP's. Heres a few that were forgotten: - Content SMP - They have one of my favorite ideas for a SMP. The Youtbubers can add mods to the server and also make mods - FoolCraft - Modded, Has Iskall85 and Xisumavoid and some others from hermitcraft - Empire SMP - Very cool building SMP with the same level of story as the Dream SMP, also has a crossover with Hermitcraft - Last Life SMP - Limited Lives, Boogyman is selected every once in a while - The Ripple Effect SMP - 20 smaller content creators in a smp - MineCrack - Although a Old SMP it was probably the first SMP many long time viewers saw - Mianite SMP - Not entirely sure but I hear it was a good one - SciCraft - You know that video where you see the million mobs come out of a farm. That but more mobs the SMP - Vault Hunters - This covers a few diffrent SMPS. Currently Iskall85 is running a Vault Hunter SMP that is very well done - Evolution SMP - SMP that started in the earliest version of minecraft and progressed versions over time - Legacy SMP - Lore/Fantasy SMP - Orgins SMP - SMP with Mod that gives players specal ability based on Orgin Chosen These are some of the more notable SMPS I can recall.
There was also Minecraft Daily at one point. Even Skydoesminecraft participated in a few of the episodes. They also had roleplaying and stuff like that.
2:00 omg the cube smp!! they were my introduction to mcyt, glad they got a cameo here :D awesome video, you can tell you put a lot of research into this
To me Mianite was probably the most influential SMP as it was practically the most popular minecraft content on Twitch up untill that point where all members were very significant personalities on the website back then (Syndicate and CaptainSparklez being both top streamers back then and Firefox as top female streamer for a bit). As twitch later became the fundamental website for most minecraft SMP content, it feels like SMPLive and consequently DreamSMP capitalized on how well smp content works on twitch and streaming as a whole
ppl are talking about the relatively recent ones left out like the ___Life series and Empires, but I’d also like to note the Yogscast’s SMPs, as insular as they may have been given how they ran as a self-contained set of creators, still were notable for their pre-MC-dark-ages time otherwise, well done! Good video :3
1.) I watched mindcrack before hermitcraft 2.) playing ‘ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny’ should’ve given me a wave of nostalgia but I just listened to it last week
Great summary video, fast-paced but definitely not too overbearing. I would say though, you did forget to mention a lot of important servers, mainly Empires and the masterpieces that are Grian's short-running Life Series SMPs. The latter managed to tap into what Dream SMP tried dabbling into - Creating the kind of emotional stories that would bring forth a community of passionate, talanted artists and animators that would further strengthen the hype surrounding the series and create more content for the fans to enjoy. All that, But with one big and very crucial difference - Life Series is not scripted _(or even if it is, it'd be VERY loosely so),_ allowing for insanely fun, genuine and iconic interractions to take place. I'd say the three visionaries of modern Minecraft SMP space were Dream _(No matter how much I dislike him I can't deny he was innovative),_ Parrot and Grian. They truly shaped the world of Minecraft survival multiplayer content as it stands right now. Also just as a quick mention, I couldn't be gladder about the fact that Hermitcraft is still thriving to this day despite the frankly bad changes that the UA-cam content creation space has suffered over the years, with the whole MrBeast-ification and obnoxious sensory overload editing to keep the toddlers entertained. Out of the mindless heaps of trash that is Modern Minecraft content, Hermitcraft (And The Life Series by its side) stands strong as a beacon of what Minecraft content looks like at its peak!
You definitely missed a couple more iconic ones. Grian has a few he made, another group made Empires, and that really techy one with mega farms. Overall, a decent rundown but could be better.
I find it silly that he never mentions that any multiplayer server that runs in survival counts as an smp, whether you are popular, or are just trying to have some fun with a friend group.
A really interesting watch, though I will say as someone who's been in fandoms and is now in the hermitcraft fandom that "character x reader" gross erotic fanfics and things are nothing new and I don't think they're new to minecraft fandoms either (unfortunately). I do think its interesting how minecraft smp videos have evolved, and in some way I do miss the more simple Let's Play videos like Hermitcraft, which seems to be one of the few SMP video series' that have stood the test of time and keep with the original format. Not to say the Lifesteal SMP videos are bad or anything, I get why people are resorting to catchy clickable or awesome ideas and I don't blame them, plus I watch a lot of those videos too. It's just kinda interesting and maybe a little sad to see the evolution of these videos and how if you wanna grow your fanbase usually the older lets play format doesn't really work much.
Hermitcraft definitely had the weird fanfic before and the obsessive behavior. a lot of things people claim started with the dsmp fandom actually originate in the hermitcraft fandom, both good and bad. We just had many years longer to sort our shit out so we seem more chill.
Weirdly enough, I honestly don't think the poor treatment of women, mistake of trying to add Jikishi to the server or immense hatred for the Dream SMP actually contributed to its decline in any meaningful way (granted you meant decline as in viewership and not just decline in reputation). I'll go point by point: - The female members were treated incredibly badly by many fans and reportedly some members ever since the start, but it was brought to the forefront once the SMP was already mostly dormant as streamers reflected back on their time in the server. However even when some members such as Nihachu (one of the most well-known female streamers on the SMP) spoke about the misogynistic treatment she received, speaking on the matter as far back as at least February 2021, it didn't affect the server's continued support and success. That said once the server had died down, it did actually raise awareness to larger issues within the MCYT community, as the same creators faced similar issues in other major spheres such as by fans when they participated in events like the MC Championship and when featured in MC collab videos. In short, the horrible sexism was present and brought up early on but never actually impacted how well or active the SMP was. - The incident with Jikishi took place in October 2021, but Dream SMP continued to find massive success after that point, such as Technoblade's jailbreak livestream in November 2021 that amassed over 15 and a half million views. So while it was a big drama at the time, it was just one in a long list of controversies rather than playing any part in the decline. - Finally, the hatred was also around for a long while before the decline too. Dream's speedrun cheating allegations took place since October 2020, and along with many other Dream-related controversies (i.e. Dream's mask video, tweets and general parasocial behavior) largely contributed towards alot of the hate for the Dream SMP. However it never affected output, content or quality from the other creators involved, with the Dream SMP's biggest viewership happening in January 2021. All in all, given the amount of diehard Dream SMP fans as late as early 2022, the only thing that actually killed the Dream SMP was the lack of communication between members; Dream failing to properly manage the server in any meaningful way beyond vague promises of future plans; and the slow migration of creators away from the server for various personal reasons along with pressure surrounding the need to do lore-related content without damaging legacy builds (with activity going from daily streams from multiple large-scale members to sometimes no stream from any large-scale members for months). It initially had plans for a season 2 and some members did finales for their characters for the sake of giving fans closure, but with no proper organisation, communication or interest from the streamers themselves, it never went forward.
I swear, in like late middle school people would call me out at lunch and say hey do you play Minecraft. And just say, yeah. And a group of people would laugh. They probably played like cod which I played sometimes but I’m not into traditional shooter games.

2023- - Post-DreamSMP Age (LifestealSMP, QSMP)
i feel like 2016-2019 would be kingdomcraft, fun craft, and one life
2016-18 was like cube SMP if you have heard of it. I think most of the UA-camrs who were in that SMP have died off hard.
2021-2023 is more Life SMP era tbh. Also 2017 - 2018 had Evo SMP.
Hermitcraft has and will always survive every SMP.
Only the OGs remember Mianite. The server walked so then the Dream SMP could run. I will remember those days o7
By the way, great video!
Watching this makes me wonder what kind of SMP content will surface after the Lifesteal era inevitably ends.
Life steal ended
@@ronarthefurryIt didn't, actually, i think it's far from over
I feel like it would take like 1-4 years for the lifesteal era to end
@@RedRicky_ Yeah, probably
Season 5 is starting in 2 days
( good job if you know who coined that)
I think the scripted videos (or at least the popular ones) stopped because they either moved on with their lives or had moved to non scripted content and since there has to be quite a few people it probably wasn’t worth it anymore.
yeah fair
you didn't mention techno's death as a reason the dream smp died. rip techno
thats the one thing we genuinely forgot. rip man
I don't know if anyone remebers the "How2Minecraft" SMP/Series around 2015, it sort of filled a gap in minecraft content that was not Hypixel related.
Going into this video I thought how to Minecraft would be mentioned, I would always watch Vikk’s videos on the first 3 seasons
absolutely!! HTM was a BIG deal if you watched anything minecraft related back then. people like team crafted werent doing smps but they were all friends with and collabed with the pack + pete/choco who were on HTM, making it super popular. you couldnt go anywhere without it being mentioned. really surprised its not on here.
Dude major props for this this was a really good video damn
What about the life series's? Whilst they werent exactly game-changing they were quite notable in terms of gaining a fan base
Your presentation and charachter is great, and you have a decently good voice. I'm looking forward to more videos like this and probably the more mainstream ones as well, a bit more research would be nice next time.
i used to be on a server called the awaken smp, but i only ended up posting one video because i tried to do everything in legit survival, whereas everyone else was just making their videos with commands. i just stopped posting minecraft altogether cus it got boring and later started this channel
dude that's so cool
1:15 the usage of ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny omg
OLD GODZILLA WAS HOPPIN AROUND TOKYO CITY LIKE A BIG PLAYGROUND OMGGGG I LOVE LEMON DEMON
Suprised you didn't mention the Hermitcraft season 9 collab with the Empires SMP
arch voicing tommy is hilaroious
Amazing content tho, i can guarantee you that this will hit millions and millions of views, so informative, entertaining and well put.
Rise to the sky SkyBoi. ❤
This video was actually rly great, good work sky
Nice video! To be honest, there is a funny problem with small SMPs - Lifesteal SMP Made the idea of SMPs so big, that people kinda lost the meaning of SMP and now for them its just "kill, grief, team, betray".
yea, now its hard to find any actually interesting smps bc they're all the same old repetitive war nonsense, as you said
fr
agreed i have a long in detail comment on this video about this
@mtth0w348 Hermitcraft is still going steady, and even when shit goes down (ie, now), it's all in good fun among friends. :)
@@emilyrattini8462 yeah, that's what I love about Hermitcraft :)
Bro 2:15 was so true for me LMAOO I got bullied out of two different channels before this one XD
LMAO
omg dylan ur here
5:56 I mean there was definitely more to the rot, but I really think the end of the server was because of technoblades death, even if it was rotting anyway if he had lived then the server definitely would have chugged along longer RIP.
Very nice video!
Also unrelated, but love how at 6:08 you used that aria math breakcore remix that has been underground up until recently
oh yeah i did
@@skyboimccan you explain the articles? 1:18
Finally got round to watching an smp related video and I'm not disappointed, very well put together video
Bro a verified UA-camr got 3 likes and 0 comment but this will be the 1 comment
I think people forget that I gained most of my subs in the last few months@@zafran715
Another reason why hermitcraft is so popular is because hermitcraft member have friends and are in other amps like empires or life series expanding to a wider audience
they also do collaborations as well, bring each others viewers to each other
Well made video! Really cool looking back at where I was when all of these SMPs were (and still are) existing xD.
I feel like you should've talked about Grian's life series (3rd life, Last life, Double life and Limited life). It's sort of like lifesteal, but with people who aren't very good at pvp. It's something that definitely should've been mentioned. Good video nonetheless.
It's crazy how smps have been around for more than a decade. banger video
Love the addressing of the scripted videos B)
Honestly really accurate timeline wise as well as how concepts came to be via the SMP genre's.
THANKS SORTA
DAMN all of this in 10 minutes and it held my attention no way, this is really well made and , from what i can tell, accurate :D
Heres a few that were forgotten:
- Content SMP - They have one of my favorite ideas for a SMP. The Youtbubers can add mods to the server and also make mods
- FoolCraft - Modded, Has Iskall85 and Xisumavoid and some others from hermitcraft
- Empire SMP - Very cool building SMP with the same level of story as the Dream SMP, also has a crossover with Hermitcraft
- Last Life SMP - Limited Lives, Boogyman is selected every once in a while
- The Ripple Effect SMP - 20 smaller content creators in a smp
- MineCrack - Although a Old SMP it was probably the first SMP many long time viewers saw
- Mianite SMP - Not entirely sure but I hear it was a good one
- SciCraft - You know that video where you see the million mobs come out of a farm. That but more mobs the SMP
- Vault Hunters - This covers a few diffrent SMPS. Currently Iskall85 is running a Vault Hunter SMP that is very well done
- Evolution SMP - SMP that started in the earliest version of minecraft and progressed versions over time
- Legacy SMP - Lore/Fantasy SMP
- Orgins SMP - SMP with Mod that gives players specal ability based on Orgin Chosen
These are some of the more notable SMPS I can recall.
Epic editing honestly I thought this video had like 200k views then I saw it only had 7K it deserves so much more frfr
crazy good vid bro. I wish for one day there will be a humongous every-creator smp at the center of it all.
NAHH I WASNT EXPECTING THE COLLEEN DRAMA TO BE IN HERE 😂😂😭😭😭 5:43
There was also Minecraft Daily at one point. Even Skydoesminecraft participated in a few of the episodes. They also had roleplaying and stuff like that.
ok but when are we starting roblox smps
2:00 omg the cube smp!! they were my introduction to mcyt, glad they got a cameo here :D
awesome video, you can tell you put a lot of research into this
To me Mianite was probably the most influential SMP as it was practically the most popular minecraft content on Twitch up untill that point where all members were very significant personalities on the website back then (Syndicate and CaptainSparklez being both top streamers back then and Firefox as top female streamer for a bit).
As twitch later became the fundamental website for most minecraft SMP content, it feels like SMPLive and consequently DreamSMP capitalized on how well smp content works on twitch and streaming as a whole
This video is *pure* 🔥, great job! :D
Very good video, that summed it up really well, have never heard of the qsmp but there is an smp called the outcasts thats pretty cool
ppl are talking about the relatively recent ones left out like the ___Life series and Empires, but I’d also like to note the Yogscast’s SMPs, as insular as they may have been given how they ran as a self-contained set of creators, still were notable for their pre-MC-dark-ages time
otherwise, well done! Good video :3
I really enjoyed this video amazing job BoiSky!
i wish you touched on influential servers like crazycraft, xlife, and the life series
The thirdlife series by Grian and the empires SMP both are very popular as well
can't wait for the 'creative mode' multiplayer servers
8:24 LOL IS THAT SLORDFIGHTER MY ARCH NEMESIS
THANK YOU LMAO
awesome video btw the editing was hilarious
please do the history of minecraft single player servers next
on it
bro caught me lacking with the “watching this on the toilet
SAME
Banger vid and pacing was awesome would love to see the retention chart
Not mentioning HTM ( How To Minecraft ) is a crime, that was my childhood
Very interesting but you forgot about third life amp by grian, I do feel like that’s a pretty major one to just skip out on
it must have taken huge amounts of research to make this video quite amazing i must say! Editing is quite extraordinary too
1.) I watched mindcrack before hermitcraft
2.) playing ‘ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny’ should’ve given me a wave of nostalgia but I just listened to it last week
Lifesteal on top. Amazing video, good research. Good Job. I can tell you put a lot of work into this video
Out of the mindless heaps of trash that is Modern Minecraft content, Hermitcraft (And The Life Series by its side) stands strong as a beacon of what Minecraft content looks like at its peak!
exactly 10 minutes. so satisfying
Good Video, went over everything you would ever want to know, 10/10. Free entertainment as well.
also the fact that you put dream in a box of kids at 4:46 lmfao
Hermitcraft, empires, and all the smaller smp’s made of people in both are just kind of vibing in the background
You're underselling cscoop in the SMPlive description he was actually very popular at the time and even today
I loved this video. It just told me sm about how much mc has grown.
You definitely missed a couple more iconic ones. Grian has a few he made, another group made Empires, and that really techy one with mega farms. Overall, a decent rundown but could be better.
This was a banger of a video cant wait to see more like this
It’s crazy how we look at the dream smp like the past but I guess it really did end
Hold on that toilet callout 💀
I find it silly that he never mentions that any multiplayer server that runs in survival counts as an smp, whether you are popular, or are just trying to have some fun with a friend group.
6:34 Future SMP mentioned!!!!
jajajjejjeojjejnngtbgmjrgjj
This video was awesome dude!
Amazing backstory! ❤ earned a sub!
As someone in the twilight smp ( 9:05 ) I’m happy we have been recognized
@@JimmyMorrison-hi5gy me too
I’ve CRIED over those DAMN QSMP EGGS (QSMP has been the only smp I’ve gotten into-)
I love the use of Terraria music in the background, good job with the edditing!
Weirdly enough, I honestly don't think the poor treatment of women, mistake of trying to add Jikishi to the server or immense hatred for the Dream SMP actually contributed to its decline in any meaningful way (granted you meant decline as in viewership and not just decline in reputation). I'll go point by point:
- The female members were treated incredibly badly by many fans and reportedly some members ever since the start, but it was brought to the forefront once the SMP was already mostly dormant as streamers reflected back on their time in the server.
It initially had plans for a season 2 and some members did finales for their characters for the sake of giving fans closure, but with no proper organisation, communication or interest from the streamers themselves, it never went forward.
totally valid
I swear, in like late middle school people would call me out at lunch and say hey do you play Minecraft. And just say, yeah. And a group of people would laugh. They probably played like cod which I played sometimes but I’m not into traditional shooter games.
ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny instrumental during the hermitcraft portion made my day

OMG SKYBOI USED AN IMAGE I SENT HIM IN THIS VIDEO, truely amazing this image has gone from some random counterstike steam post to a minecraft video it is truely an hounor to have this image in such a great video.
Disagree that most of the dream smp fans moved over to lifesteal. Most of them either continued watching those creators and QSMP, or moved over to watching the hermitcraft side of things (especially the Life Series, which had a huge overlap with dream smp fans)
i didn't say most of them, some definitely did but you're right
@@skyboimcI moved to qsmp
@@clay_notfound1 yeah
hold up.. mindcrack STILL exists... and it has UNDER 500 views per video? Mindcrack was my life back in the day... didn't know the players moved to hermitcraft..
We really do have the the holy trinity of SMPs right now. "Hardcore"-LifeSteal, Vanilla-HC, Worldwide talent-QSMP
this was SO worth the wait
I love that you use the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny as background music, great choice
Wow! This is really the history of SMPs.
10/10 video, this should blow up!
