True. It is a matter of vocation. You are called to it or you are not. There are people who could get by in a religious order that is fairly relaxed with some creature comforts who have no vocation. But I doubt that would be the case in the Carthusian Order. I tried it for six months but the night office and the perpetual recitation of endless rosaries instead of the Divine Office was too much for me.
I recognize this was made years go, but wow. Gorgeous photography, especially the monochromatic images. I ‘v read “An Infinity of Little Hours” and am fascinated by the Carthusians. Their strict devotion. I’m curious which Monastery this was in the photographs, and how on earth you secured permission to respectfully photograph these holy men. Bravo.

When Groning wrote and asked permission to film them they said they would get back to him. Sixteen years later they said they were ready. Times stops in this place as you will see. The difference is you can see the sugar bowl but not my thoughts. The chess move I contemplate exists in my mind and you cannot see it before I touch the chess piece. It exists in the physical world when you see me move the piece. Inventors consider how something might work before they make it. The gizmo exists in their mind and then in the physical world when they build it. It may not work successfully right away but that is besides the point. There were just some facets that the inventor did not mentally consider. Actually the process for the gizmo goes from thought, to paper, maybe to model, to actual construction of a prototype, and further adjustment and modification. When the original Lockheed Constellation airplane was designed engineers realized that a tail (vertical stabilizer) and rudder large enough to control yaw and assist banking would be so large that the plane would not fit in existing hangars. So they designed a triple tail that was lower and accomplished the needed effective control. The solution existed in the minds of the engineers first. Or where you merely stating something didn’t exist in physical world?

Since they are so disciplined with food and prayer what Mass do they celebrate? A pre-55 non dialogue mass or a more modern 62 (without dialogue) or a Novus Ordo. Hard to imagine a non dialogue Novus Ordo.

It is more likely the monks built it and designed it during their work hours outside of prayer time, thus reducing the labour costs. And surviving on donations from generous benefactors which helped financially to build the Monastery and the cells/hermitages for the monks

They rely and survive on alms/donations and the work they do to sell, to support their community. They do far much more than you ever know! They pray for all of us. They pray for world peace, make sacrifices and are torchbearers leading us all to God. That is faaarrrr worth so much more than anything of material worth. Having a great garden/farm comes down to skilled green thumbs or training in agriculture to have established a successful farm/garden. The exterior of the Monastery is not at all important. You most certainly live in a posh residence and have wads of $$. These monks do NOT keep any individual cash for themselves. Whatever alms received goes towards the maintenance, bills and groceries for the monks. They keep little amongst themselves. Everything is shared in the community. Interior of Monastery is very simple, nothing at all flash or poshy! They balance both work and prayer. Just be grateful you live in a posh residence, have wads of $$, food in the fridge and live in a good neighborhood. Be grateful to God for this blessing and cease judging how other people live their lives. When was the last time you prayed to God?

They look poor, their life is simply, yet the monastery is very grand, must have cost millions to build and more to maintain.
