for those who can't understand that half step thingy just remember this. Major chord - place a note > skip 3 notes > place a note > skip 2 notes > place a note. Minor chord - place a note > skip 2 notes > place a note > skip 3 notes > place a note. You're welcome
You deserve a Medal. Thank you , do you maybe know what he means at 9:24 Where he says lets put 1 Note 3 or 4 down does he mean steps ? or half steps? or Apples? I dot get it.. iam new to this topic tho.
@@johnrick3508 i think you already know what he means but if you dont he means that the bass notes are gonna be the 5the step of the melody so he just makes a chord out of the melody and the last note of every chord is gonna be the bass note
I know it is a little late but here is a tip that tremendously helped me memorize major and minor scales. In essence, just remember that C major and its relative minor scale, A minor, have only white keys. Then, follow the white keys on your keyboard or piano roll to determine where the whole steps and half steps are in the scale. For example, start with a C and follow all the white keys. If there is no black key between two white notes, it is a half step (h). If there is a black key, then it is a whole step (W). So, major scale will be W-W-h-W-W-W-h. Same idea applies to the minor scale. Start with an A and follow the white keys, which will result in W-h-W-W-h-W-W. Then, you can use this code to apply it to any scale. In short, just visualize C major and A minor. Hopefully, my explanation makes sense. Also, FL has a neat tool in the piano roll options. Go to piano roll options → Helpers → Scale highlighting. It definitely helped me in the beginning although eventually, I would recommend keeping your piano roll highlighting in C major.
As I said in the video about creating better melodies, this will help people so much. My first introduction to music was by playing the piano. I really think it is one of the best instruments to learn, especially if you are new to music production. You’re not going to learn every aspect of theory but it definitely helps in the long run.
Tip for learning scales: if you want to learn scales, find the code for the scale you want, like the Minor Scale for example (2122122 or WHWWHWW) Just make it your phone passcode until you memorize it, helped me tons 👍 Love the vid man
You're an amazing producer and a wonderful teacher. Ever since finding your channel, I've been a huge fan of your work and have had your spotify playlist on loop. Thank you for what you do!
i used a few of your tips in my latest three tracks and compared to my older work they sound so much better now. thank you, i enjoy watching you work :)
If it sounds good, it sounds good. A sentence I learned when overthinking about how to arrange my chords. Not that you always have to put them super simple, but that in some cases its valid if it sounds good :)
I like to find two or three chords I am pretty familiar with and then experiment to see if I can find a new or interesting chord that I wasn't expecting to fit my progression! this helps me learn new chords and also find a way to build around them for future reference if I come across a time to use it again, and most of the time it will make the progression sound unique and not cliche.
I really love your content. It helped me with not wasting my 8years of music school giving me motivation and it continues to help me massively with your tips and tricks. Definitely my favourite producer so keep up the good work :D
Before the video I was kind of scared about using other chords than major or minor but now I will try to make more out of the other chords as well because of the knowledge I learned from this video
FLS also has "helpers"/guides (or ghost channels if you will) in the piano roll settings that can help beginners stay on track with any given scale, along with loads of chords that can be added in with a single click of the root/tonic note. Great video, sometimes the most simple changes in a progression can make all the difference.
This stuff is really cool.. Loved your last video about improving melodies and this one is just🔥. You should definitely do some more of these music theory stuff.. Its as useful as any other tutorial and I don't think music theory stuff is boring. Let's keep this going😅🙌
Thanks for these amazing videos! It means a lot to me, when someone who actually releases his music on major labels shares his production tips so detailed!
the beat by mike williams feels truly inspirating. if it isnt too much work u could add a simple helper to know which notes u r playing at what time. keep on like this!
even though I already know most of the stuff, i always love your videos, cause I'm still learning a thing here and there! For example the third note thing for the melody. I wouldn't necessarly start writing my melodys that way, but for reverse engineering the chords it's a big help. I always had problems doing my melody first and then figuring out the right chords. thanks for that :)
Hey Jonas. I really enjoy watching your videos and I would really enjoy a video about getting started on producing tracks and especially drops. I think that's the most interesting thing in EDM music. Greetings from Germany
Many people think music theory is not that important but I noticed while producing that it is so helpful to know which notes go well and which tones create which feeling. Very good tutorial, I already knew almost everything but I think it's very helpful and essential dir upcoming producers!🔥❤️
One thing I loved a lot is KSHMR's trick, using harmonic minor scale, you can make dominant chord major which will give strong impact. Example : for A minor scale Am Dm Emaj Am. Try this, you will get cool thing.
