Micheal had all of Vito's traits except one. The ability to get everyone to love you. The one good trait Sonny seemed to have (at least from his family anyway) from his father
He didn´t have all of it. He had quite a few of them, but each of Vito´s sons had one main trait from him. Sonny had the explosive anger, Fredo had his kindness and humanity, and Michael his intelligence and ruthlessness. The difference is that Michael didn´t have the same kind of humanity
Greatest film ever made in my opinion. Thank you for taking the time to talk about this film (as well as the first godfather movie). I wish I knew people who love this film as much as I do because I could talk about it for hours. Direction, Acting, cinematography, music, etc. Is GOD level.
Gotta say the point you started in The first Godfather reaction about why Fredo betrayed Micheal and continued in this one I never thought of. I always thought it was just jealousy but him killing Moe Green for him must have been very upsetting. Hyman Roth even said the same thing basically. Brilliant how Coppola bought that full circle including when he tells Fredo not to take sides against the family again.
1:49:16 yup! its a sicilian concept called omertà. it is essentially the idea that it’s dishonorable to give evidence to the government against the mafia, even members of other families. you don’t even testify against enemies. it’s why you never see anyone prosecuted criminally for the various assassinations. frank’s brother vincenzo was also a mafia head honcho in his own right back in his village in sicily. his appearance is a reminder that frank needs to uphold the honor of omertà.
Love The Godfather films! They’re genius in every way possible. I think the first time I saw the first movie I fell in love with the cat and then the second film I was so interested in the character change of Michael. The perfect cast and the perfect story.
So I saw The Godfather for the first time a few years ago as The Godfather Epic on amc (i believe) where they put the events of both in chronological order so when I saw the movies separately I was so lost lol. Nevertheless I love both. Part 3…. Eh, I love when Connie eats the poisonous cannoli😂
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ I believe it was Coppola who did that for network TV back in the late 70s or early 80s, called _The Godfather: A Novel for Television_
1:34:54 actually we did learn the daughter's name in the movie. When Kay visits the house to speak with her kids, she calls the daughter Mary, and then asks her son Anthony for a kiss before Michael shows up to close the door on her. Also slight nitpick, but Michael's enforcer is Al, not Hal. other than than, nice content! #subscribed
My father's favorite scene is the prequel ending. For me it's either that or when Micheal takes his forgiveness of Fredo. I'm 41 now but when I first watched that scene as a kid I got it right away not even asking my dad any questions like I did most of the movie. Lol, he was impressed.
Amazing video like always absolutely loved it. I heard from doing some research on the film myself that the actor playing Clemenza wanted to write his own lines for the films and also Francis wanted him to lose weight so he could play his younger self but they scraped that idea and he didn't want to gain the weight back.
It was family honor! He couldn’t destroy his family honor in front of his brother and have his brother go back home & tell the family what he he had done. From the Script This committee owes an apology, this committee owes an apology. An apology SENATOR! TOM tells something to PENTANGELI's brother in Italian. . . What tom Told Pentangeli’s brother was “La onore de la famiglia sta posto.” The family’s honor is intact.
Vito told Michael to treat Tom the same way Vito told Clemenza & Tessio to never be apart of each others armies of soldiers so Vito could keep them all in place under his rule without having to worry about both of them stabbing Vito in the back ever especially by his two capos together & thats why he knew exactly which of them two capos actually took Barzinis side in the first film because he always kept them separated from each other!!!! Only during meetings did he have them both in the same exact room together during war time!!!! Tessio was always kept in the dark as Vitos other Capo also so he could use him as a secret weapon when he actually needed him during war time while he used Clemenzas regime of soldiers in the open as a ruse that all the other five families would think is Vitos only real regime of men under his rule!!! Go read the novel , it really brings everything to life that u guys haven't known about & the films do explain alot of this in some of the deleted scenes but still...go read the novel too !!!!! There is so much missing from the films especially characters like Sonny & Barzini & Luca & even Fredo & Michaels version of Luca Brasi which is ofcorse Al Neri ❤
I wished they had done a proper prequel to the Godfather showing the full rise of Vito as part 2 including the Olive oil wars. Then part 3 with Michael’s rise and fall. Still, the contrast with the young Vito and Michael was still superb in 2.
Hey do you guys have a cat? I may be crazy but I swear I heard meowing. Anyway this is one of the best movies of all time top 25 for sure. I love talking about Michael and weather his actions are justified with people. I always go back and forth on if he shouldn've killed fredo. I still don't know family loyalty is everything. I know you guys would never betray eachother the way fredo does Mike. I love love love the prequel elements with young Vito. Deniro just kills this role and he's amazing one of his best roles. When his mother gets killed pleading for her sons life hits my emotions every time. Coppola somehow made two movies in one and it just works I don't think this type of film could work today 10/10 movie and 10/10 episode!
one could argue that Goodfellas is a worthy successor to The Godfather one could also make the compelling argument that Casino is a worthy successor to The Godfather:Part II
to quote James Caan A "Godfather Four"? Not by Francis [Francis Ford Coppola], anyway. Who cares? There shouldn't have been a The Godfather Part III (1990).
Your pronunciation is killing me guys! It's not Junko, it's Genco Abbandando, vito's consiglieri that dies in tgf1. I highly recommend watching tgf saga, it has additional scenes that makes many things clear like why he decided to go against Don Fanucci. Also you mentioned in your tgf1 vid that vito likely revealed more to his wife than Michael did, you don't know that. Like you said here, the fact that he closed the door on his wife when he gets the guns from clemenza shows he keeps his business away from his wife, it's man's business. Michael did love Kay but not like apollonia, and I believe if apollonia had not died, Michael would've had a happier end. Also you don't know what vito did from the end of killing Don ciccio and the beginning of tgf1, we are not privy to it. You only see what michael has to go through. so you don't know if michael was more vicious or more of a criminal than his father was, you only assume that bec we are not shown 20 years of vito's life. Michael had to kill both Roth and fredo, like michael said roth has been dying of the same heart attack for 20 years. You're taking the word of Tom who is not a war time consiglieri and failed both sonny and vito, bec he did not see sollozzo and barzini coming, nor was he even suspicious. I bet genco would've seen it bec genco was a wartime consiglieri unlike tom. 2nd michael gave Fredo a 2nd chance in Cuba when he told him he was still his brother, that was sincere. But when he saw him again, Fredo revealed 2 things: he knew Roth had a man in the senate and didn't volunteer the information to help his brother and 2nd, he showed his bitterness at being stepped over. This seething bitterness and holding back info proved he could never be trusted. That his bitterness would've overwhelmed him into betraying michael again. Michael had to kill both bec both posed a threat, no different to why he killed the heads of the 5 families in tgf1. Fyi michael already suspected fredo, that’s why he had fredo bring the 2M to Cuba, he wanted fredo to be around ola. He could've brought the 2M with him and roth even questions him about it, but michael purposely leaves the money to verify his suspicions of fredo. And no, michael did not always intend to kill fredo, that happened after the 2nd confrontation back home and fredo showed michael how he truly feels about michael. Vito's time was different from Michael's, and he faced different challenges. The fbi cracked down on the mafia by Michael's time and vito was right, the cops could turn their heads from simple vices such as drinking and gambling, but drugs? Heroin? No. Drugs ruin society, kills children, these were not seen as innocent vices. Look around, where's the mafia? Michael had to deal with a tougher enemy, the US government, alongside with crooks such as Hyman Roth. And the other families. Finally in tgf2, michael is betrayed by the very family he gave his life to protect: his own brother and his wife. Even his sister hates him bec of her husband. He is paranoid. Vito's family was killed, so his family will never betray him. His wife is a traditional sicilian, she is loyal and faithful like vito is to her. If Apollonia had lived, he would've had that lifeline to ground him and to temper his paranoia, but instead he had kay, an american wife. Finally, he married Kay, yes to have a family bec he had no time for courtship. But marrying Kay was also his attempt to sever his own children from the family business. His kids would've been half wasps, as non sicilians, they could never be part of the mafia, they are out by blood. Ps. Clemenza was never a consiglieri! Both clemenza and tessio were caporegimes. Genco abandando was vito 's consiglieri, you see him in tgf2 and you see him dying in tgf saga. Vito worked for genco's father even, and later vito and genco created the genco olive oil. Sheesh! Read the book and watch tgf saga. I've seen these films over 30 times, so you catch things the more you watch. Pps. You guys make leaps and bounds on just baseless assumptions too: -michael takes pleasure in being a Don -senator pat is the 1st guy to challenge michael -pentangelli is blood related to the corleones bec he comes from the same town in sicily The 1st 2 is pure assumption, there is no indication that either is true. I have no idea where you pulled it from, and Michael does not look happy or arrogant in that scene. He looks like he has to deal with another 1 of these types. Frank pentangelli is not from corleone, Sicily. He inherits from clemenza the corleone family left in NY. Clemenza breaks off to run his own family, still using the corleone name, when the main corleone family moved to Nevada. This is in tgf1. 2nd, even if you're from the same town or village, it doesn't mean you are blood related

100%
Michael’s lack of speaking and him instead talking with his eyes in this movie is legendary work by Pacino.
Big time
Chris Columbus cited The Godfather and The Godfather:Part II as a key source of inspiration when he began working on the Harry Potter movies
My favorite movie ever
Great pick!
In the book of the Godfather, Vito took the name Corleone himself, not by the immigration officer.
