    She must feel betrayed by her grandmother. I was expecting the grandmother would be happy that the necklace was found. ANd also how can the mother just send her daughter to an asylum knowing how bad they treat the patients?

      Becuase they think being "sick" as in different is more dangerous, and modern understanding of family doesnt really applied to older times and people keep mistaking that parent before modern time is as nice as modern parent even though in reality a lot of adult consider child as properties

      Well, this is why women did what they were told for so long. Their parents could send them to places like this or worse if they disobeyed and it was completely normal and accepted. We didnt have rights for a long time and it really shows how scary it was for us and how dismissed we were when former male slaves got to vote before we did--especially given the racial climate of the time. But then again women have been slaves since the beginning in many cultures. We could go away to one of these horrible asylums just for having simple emotions. I feel awful for the women who had no control whatsoever over their lives.

      Look at chronic illness forums and see how many women are told that their health problems are just their period, depression, or failure of character. They may not call it "hysteria" anymore, but women are medically gaslighted all the time. Men are too, but not near as often.

    Apart from the spiritual aspect, all of this stuff actually happened to women. If you spoke out or didn't act as you were told you would be declared crazy or that you suffer from hysteria. Not only women were victims of this abuse but many people with mental disorders were given a place in these asylums. It's insane to think that the sweet kids I work with could have ended up in such a situation if they had been born in that time

    Wrong, she wasn't at a friends funeral at the beginning of the film. She said she was at Victor Hugo's funerals. He is one of the greatest French authors. (he wrote the Misérables and so much more) His death was a big big event for French people, especially young people. Lot of people came to say goodbye to his genius mind. In the film, we can see many time that Eugénie love poetry, and we can suppose he was one of her favorite as she read some of his works later in the film.

    people who are like "wow we really treated mentally ill patients bad in those days gee im glad we dont do that now" have never been committed or heard someone with that experience speak about it... yes, its different and there are regulations now, thank god. but staff is overworked and underpaid, they treat patient like livestock, forget about them, or worse... its still very, very bad. still lots to fix and make better. we need to keep speaking up for the disenfranchised, like these poor women from the movie and that era, who could not call for help -- and wouldnt be believed even if they did.

    Yo mystery recapped, I know there’s a chance you’re redid this so please take into consideration KEEPING the same music as before! The original creepy/thriller music just never gets boring with these type of videos and gives me a certain want to watch your videos instead of other recaps. It’s just a suggestion and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels overwhelmed by the multiple/different music on the videos. Doesn’t matter you’re probably not gonna see this and no one cares so either way it’s great

      Well since it was all horse carriages, no cars, we can correctly assume this took place before the 1900s, and back then psychology was just a pseudoscience. They didn’t know what they were doing as it was a whole new branch of research, and intentional or not new science will always bring new casualties. What’s important are the further casualties it prevents. Still kinda f**led up sh*t tho

    @nyxErebus -
    I think things were just systematically bad in asylums until the book "One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'. Some politician's then visited a real one to see if things were as bad as they are in the book.... and found them to be that bad or worse in reality. Even this movie... well google says, "Gilman wrote the book based on her own personal experience, after she was sent to a women's mental health clinic for her postpartum depression."
    And that was just in America. Other countries still have little mercy to the insane or criminals. I like to think we are improving as a society, but we do need to remember stuff like this so we can learn not to allow, and more importantly why it is a terrible thing.
