She must feel betrayed by her grandmother. I was expecting the grandmother would be happy that the necklace was found. ANd also how can the mother just send her daughter to an asylum knowing how bad they treat the patients?
Becuase they think being "sick" as in different is more dangerous, and modern understanding of family doesnt really applied to older times and people keep mistaking that parent before modern time is as nice as modern parent even though in reality a lot of adult consider child as properties
Well, this is why women did what they were told for so long. Their parents could send them to places like this or worse if they disobeyed and it was completely normal and accepted. We didnt have rights for a long time and it really shows how scary it was for us and how dismissed we were when former male slaves got to vote before we did--especially given the racial climate of the time. But then again women have been slaves since the beginning in many cultures. We could go away to one of these horrible asylums just for having simple emotions. I feel awful for the women who had no control whatsoever over their lives.
Look at chronic illness forums and see how many women are told that their health problems are just their period, depression, or failure of character. They may not call it "hysteria" anymore, but women are medically gaslighted all the time. Men are too, but not near as often.
Apart from the spiritual aspect, all of this stuff actually happened to women. If you spoke out or didn't act as you were told you would be declared crazy or that you suffer from hysteria. Not only women were victims of this abuse but many people with mental disorders were given a place in these asylums.
