    - 30k score (no grid damage)
    - All objectives complete
    - No pilot or mech deaths
    - No grid resists
    - Steel Judoka squad
    - 2hr 23min run time
Steel Judoka are by far my least favorite squad. And yet, their mechanics are actually quite fun when they work in your favor. I will admit I found myself enjoying this run, and aside from a hair-pulling 20-minute turn in Island 4, I felt pretty powerful throughout. Steel Judoka are all about movement - both yours and the Vek. Their entire getup is to move Vek into position to damage each other and block emerging Vek. That makes them surprisingly strong on Hard, because blocking Vek is always a priority. That said, you'll see I quickly sell the unique boost they get - Vek hormones - because relying on Vek to outright kill each other is frequently not as important as blocking. They are a difficult squad to master, because failing to master their techniques will see you quickly overrun.
Steel Judoka have some serious drawbacks. They have a hard time dealing with Vek that can't be moved - whether it's a burrower or a tile that's blocked or something else. Their damage output is sub-par, and even their damage upgrades, which are expensive, don't do much to fix this. The entire squad really relies on synergizing well on every turn, and things can quickly turn against you if you don't play with technical proficiency. My favorite of the squad is Gravity Mech, because a ranged pull that can bypass obstacles is really useful, and dumping Vek Hormones lets you put a better science weapon in its place. Siege Mech is probably the worst of all artillery units, combining elements of the Artillery Mech and the Meteor Mech, but being more unwieldy and doing less damage overall. Judo Mech can go either way, and as you see, in this run, once equipped with Boosters and Harold, was a champ.

I just got a perfect run with Steel Judoka by putting Kazaaak on the science mech and unpowering Vek Pheromones. Immedietly after the first island I bought new weapons for my prime and arty (acid spear + aegon), and at that point I wasn’t really playing Steel Judoka anymore.

    • @soulmata

Yeah. That can happen with any squad, but squads with odd or difficult stock configurations can kind of push you down that route. There's a second slot on every Mech for a reason, but some squads seem to sort of beg "fix me", unless you want a self imposed challenge.

@@soulmata Thats by far the biggeset difficulty I had when playing: thinking moves ahead.
I was doing fine on the individual turns after the first 2 hours or so. But only after I actually started blocking enemies and such did I get my first win.
I must say this game is one of snowballing. If you play poorly on 1 turn you will probably have to many Vek to deal with on the next turn. Which results in you taking more damage which means you need to spend some reputation to fix it which means less reputation for reactor cores and other upgrades which means weaker mechs which means a more difficult second island which ultimately results in a loss.
But if you do well: you get more reputation resulting in more flexible and powerfull mechs. Your grid will also get more resist chance, allowing more mistakes.
Its honestly really clever design for a rogue like. Because it puts some real tension on the later islands. But if you f#ck up early on you don't have to waste a ton of time before you figure that out.

Steel Judoka and Hazardous Mechs are, IMO, the squads with the highest technical proficiency to make work. Their mechanics aren't as straightforward as any other squads, and they rely more heavily on Vek damaging each other. Choice of pilot has a big choice with Hazardous Mechs too - taking Abe is by far the strongest choice for the Leap Mech.

    • @soulmata
      @soulmata  4 роки тому +5

It's a useful enough unit, I suppose, but like I said in r/itb, the real issue is that it combines elements from multiple other arty units without actually making them better. I feel it's the weakest of all the arty units because of its low damage, expensive damage upgrade, and larger AoE makes it more unwieldy. The grid immunity is fine, but compare that to the Rift Walkers which is also getting grid immunity and +1 damage to a specific tile, also with an ortho push.

@@soulmata The expensiveness cannot be denied, and it's terrible out-of-the-box. But regarding the last sentence, a particularly zealous supporter of Judoka ( www.reddit.com/r/IntoTheBreach/comments/84f4ga/oc_judoka_mastery/dvqtue5/ ) argues that not having to choose between dealing damage and pushing is a good thing. Maybe he is thinking the scenario when an alpha hornet / scorpion is attacking your building, and if you're using Rift Walker's, you have to push it for 0 damage or involve another mech since its 3 damage isn't enough to kill it. With Siege mech you can push and deal 2 damage at the same time. But looking at your aggressive spawnblocking tactics, I can see why you sometimes prefer to leave certain Vek alive.

Archimedes goes to G-3 and switches places with the flying vek, then takes up the E-3 spawn spot.
Harold goes to B-5 to kill the crab
Artillery shoots C-4 or D-5 to get rid of the scorpion.

Rusting Hulks/Blitzkrieg/Flame Behemoths are evenly matched for toughness/easiest to win with, Frozen Titans/Rift Walkers/Zenith Guard in the middle, and Steel Judoka/Hazardous Mechs/Secret Squad being the hardest. That can vary wildly by which pilots you bring and of course the RNG on shops, though. As far as favorite... Flame Behemoths and Hazardous Mechs. Hi, are these perfect runs possible consistently? I have tried to do a perfect first island (Archive) on hard with rift-walkers, and lets just say, my success rate is probably below 10%. Not to speak of the follow up islands, Time and time I come up with turns that might have been solvable if I had done something different the turn before. Sometimes even my deploy that worked perfectly on first turn, means I fail the second.
Or I can't complete the bonus objectives, have to destroy a time capsule, let a mech die.
What is the going success rate I should expect, I'm trying to git gud but I think I have plateaued,

    • @soulmata
      @soulmata  3 роки тому +6

Definitely not. The game has very little RNG, but the RNG does affect what Vek spawn - it's possible to have Vek spawn, especially early on, that are impossible to deal with. An early Hornet that buzzes off to to a far corner or tucks itself between a mountain and a building that you can't move, for instance, are common ways you can lose a 30k. That said, I do believe every game is winnable, and that achieving a near-100% win rate is possible, if you are patient enough.

I think a large part of the game is not being happy with mediocre turns. You need to push yourself to fully optimise every turn, to kill and block as many vek as possible and position your mechs optimally. There is usually a better solution than your first instinct, which kills or traps more vek and uses the environment to its full potential.

@@soulmata The thing is, the game is so insistent on this squad being able to "make the vek attack each other" when in reality, literally 99% of the time they are incapable of doing so!!! The forzen prime, the teleport mech, even the god damn rift walkers have better utility for this purpose than SJ; So even the play style that it tries to cram us into, is not really possible with the current toolkit....🤦‍♂
And it's a real shame too... If something like the control mech or the swap mech was a part of this squad instead of the dogshit pull mech, AND the prime could have 1 more throw range, there is a lot of fun to be had when you try to get vek to kill each other the whole time.

  • @lordtomlluckrahthegreat9014

Steel Judoka would be a million times better if the Gravity Mech had the the "Force Amp" passive pre-installed with a Reactor Core instead of the "Vek Hormones" one. That or making Vek Hormones deal a plus +2 by default.
Also, this squad has a lot of trouble with Burrowers; it'd be cool if the Judo Mech had a secondary attack that made enemies turn around, like the Spartan Shield for the Aegis Mech does, for times when you absolutely can't do anything to an enemy. And speaking of the Judo Mech... is it just me or does 1 point of damage seem weak when you consider you are supposedly lifting a leviathan bug over your apartment-height shoulders before suplexing onto it's back? That manouver sounds like it should, AT THE VERY LEAST, deal 2 damage.

I just got my ass on fire playing this squad for the first time. The main reason is that on the snow island there's a vek that is immune to moving but hitting hard for three squares and in this squad there's only 1 mech that can do anything to him. And secind reason is I don't understand why the big throwing guy can't throw one vek into another, that would be so awesome but instead he's often remain useless.

@@bluedistortions It's further complicated that, subjectively, the best use for your 2nd slot is for an item that lets you disable Vek in a way your 1st slot doesn't. @@soulmata Yes! Excellent point. So it makes a "damage" utility even worse in that regard.
And yet again, having a "utility" slot would solve that issue! I really feel like the designer didn't put quite as much thought or play testing into this game as he did FTL. The weapons were just so badly balanced , there's only a handful that are really viable purchase/use options, and all he had to do to sort most of it is to have a utility/accessory slot. Its such an obvious solution I dont see how an experienced game designer would miss it.
That, and power requirements are all over the map. One use weapons should have 0-1 power requirements (fully upgraded) and either their own "one shot sidearm slot" or be classified as utilities and fit in that slot.
This would make almost everything viable as thered be at least no harm in bringing it to the battle with you. As it is, 85% of weapons are just resale fodder, which is annoying, viable playstyles are very limited, and runs are highly reliant on finding the few good weapons.
