    Today I learned:
We should all leave a single one line comment in the Linux Kernel so that there is always living people who can refuse a hostile take-over of Linux in the distant future.

No, please don't do this. No need to spam commits that won't get merged. If you want to contribute, that's great. Putting your name in a comment is dumb. If you want to make a mark, actually commit something useful and you can be a proud contributor, forever credited for your code.
I'm only saying this as I can seriously imagine people who've never touched code in their lives trying to do this.

    Linus Torvalds:
"The whole "Open Source" renaming was done largely _exactly_ because people
wanted to distance themselves from the FSF. The fact that the FSF and it's
followers refused to accept the name "Open Source", and continued to call
Linux "Free Software" is not _our_ fault.
Similarly, the fact that rms and the FSF has tried to paint Linux as a GNU
project (going as far as trying to rename it "GNU/Linux" at every
opportunity they get) is their confusion, not ours.
I personally have always been very clear about this: Linux is "Open
Source". It was never a FSF project, and it was always about giving source
code back and keeping it open, not about anything else."
    Tell the whole story 👍

Linus: make your kernel so bloated it's considered an entire operating system

    • @JaapVersteegh
      @JaapVersteegh 2 роки тому +33

Yes, but irrelevant. Linus uses "Linux" for the kernel, since that's all he cares about. Makes sense, but most people say "Linux" to a complete system with Linux as a kernel. It makes sense that such a system be called GNU/Linux considering the amount of GNU software in such a system. Abbreviation to just "Linux" shouldn't be such an issue though. It's just a name..

What you’re referring to as a Shitpost, is in fact, GNU/Shitpost, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Shitpost. A Shitpost is not a good joke unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU copypasta made funny by the GNU corelib-tards, FSF marketing fails and viral rofl-inducing collection of in-jokes comprising a full train wreck philosophy as defined by Richard Stallman.

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux."
The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even you were correct, you wont be for long."
With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as sneed, is in fact, sneed’s feed and seed, or as I've recently taken to calling it, sneed’s feed plus seed. Sneed is not a shop unto itself, but rather the name of the shop’s current owner, which used to belong to chuck, thus being called “chuck’s feeduck and seeduck” at some point in it’s history.
Many sneed users run a modified version of the feed system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of feed which is widely used today is often called "sneed", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the seed system, developed by chuck.
There really is a sneed, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Sneed is the owner: the guy behind the counter that allocates the shop’s resources to the other sneeders.

I disagree with calling it Gnu/Linux. First off, there are a few Linux distros that contain 0 GNU software like Alpine for example. Not to mention GNU is definitely not the only contributor so why call it GNU/Linux instead of GNU/Microsoft/Google/Huawei/Meta/MORECOMPAINES/MOREINDIVIDUALS/Linux? GNU is only one contributor and are definitely NOT the only contributor. Nor is GNU software required with Linux systems. Not to mention it was proved Microsoft uses GNU software as well in the Windows XP source leak. So I guess Windows is GNU/WindowsNT. (Not disagreeing with you btw, just giving my thoughts as well. "I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to beardsplain with extreme precision.
Even if you were correct, you won't be for long."
With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've muslpilled him to death.
