- Fishing in Stardew Valley is a very controversial topic. I've wondered for a VERY long time, how to catch the legend. But one day I became a Stardew Fishing Guru, and now I am here to pass this knowledge on to you. We will finally settle the debate of Stardew's most difficult fish.

PERSONALLY, I find the Octopus to be the hardest in the game. It has an incredibly low bite rate, very difficult pattern, only available in the early hours and summer, at the beach. Also, DESPITE it's very low bite rate, it is NOT affected by the lure that makes rare fish bite more often. It does work with the lava eel though. Frustrating af
Tbh it kinda ruins the game a bit. i mean willy hypes up the legend so much, you have to grind all the way to lvl 10 just to be able to catch it and the fish is much easier to catch than a bloody octupus

I don’t know if it was a glitch (and I play on console), but I caught the lava eel on a training rod once. I got the “gather trash for Linus” task, so I figured the best thing to do would be to get the training rod and go to the lava pool in the mines, because I would be guaranteed to get trash on every cast, right? Training rod can only catch low-level fish, lava only has high-level fish, and I can hit the drop-off location on the way home.
And then I hooked a fish. And caught my first lava eel on that play through. Maybe the game has a special “this dumbass doesn’t know that lava eels can’t be caught with a training rod but she’s cast over 50 times so I’ll take pity on her” mechanic. Or I’ve also heard that the training rod’s code says “no legendaries or fish between level X and Y”, and there are a handful of fish that were over the Y-value. Dunno. I have more than 1000 hours in the game, and it was by far my weirdest experience.
bro next time just take a rod to the pond in ur farm, trash every time. Or the water fountain in the area above the town. Easy completion.
@@oranplan1630 IIRC it was part of a loop. Mine cart to mines, get something in the mines (kill a ghost for the wizard, something like that), fish until the Adventurer’s Guild was about to close, sell a bunch of weapons, drop trash at the railroad, witches hut to wizards tower, then home. It was on a monster slayer playthrough, only allowed to make money by selling monster drops or armaments (weapons and rings). I think.
i swear i caught the scorpion carp in town somehow, but then again i might have just got it out of a trash can (because scorpion carps just obviously belong there... lewis)
@@arjc5714 you don’t just kill one Ghost for the Wizard if you need the ectoplasm. It isn’t a guaranteed drop from ghosts.
@@dartimes6048 No, like “Please kill one Squidkid, I will pay you.” The tasks on the Help Wanted board next to Pierre’s. Sometimes it’s two ghosts, or rock crabs, or other things like that. Pierre, Lewis, and Rasmodius can all request you kill a number of monsters, IIRC.

A tip I haven't seen anyone mention, which is so strange! The lava eel, at least for me, spawns more the LESS you cast your rod out. DO NOT aim for a maxed out distance when casting your line. Get maybe to level four. I found this caused them to bite SO MUCH more frequently.
That doesn't really make sense, have you conducted an offical scientific experiment to prove it better
The lava eel is much easier in the volcano pool on Ginger Island. I tried it for 6 hours using Escargot and the cork bobber as buffs and caught 13 in that time and only about 8 trash. I have found the Octopus much harder. And the Lingcod is nastier than you say. Good video though I enjoyed your comments
But if you want a lava eel pond before you go to ginger island you have to go to the mines and suffer

I agree and disagree here. I think thank God and concerned ape for 1.5 but for the lifespan of stardew valley the lava eel has a reputation of filling people's inventories with trash until they rage quit.
Agree! I saved the lava eel for last and spent hours just trying to get it to bite in the mines. Went to Ginger Island and immediately caught it.
The Lava Eel is actually probably my favorite fish, because it produces the highest-selling aged roe.
Would be better if you can mass produce it, but fish ponds take up too much space

I've caught all the legendary fish, and done extended family more than 10 times, and the octopus still makes me fear for my life every time I see those movement patterns on my screen.
I actually find Super Cucumber to be rather easy compared to other fish. I can get it so reliably that I tend to catch a gold one for the year 1 luau instead of using a gold cauliflower.

yeah super cucumbers are my go to for the luau, the stardew valley fair and the wizard’s birthday since its a favourite gift and i really need to get him something good after i’ve been to lazy to go to his tower all year lmao

Octupus is the hardest in my opinion because of the time it spawns lava eels i can always go to the mines any day any season
Honestly. Ginger Island saved my life with the Octopus, even if the catch time is still ridiculously early, it's available all year round over there so the window of opportunity to catch it is much wider. I was getting really tired of not being able to catch the Octopus all summer/winter and having to wait a whole month just to be able to catch it again :/
All the fish vary quite a lot in difficulty, so on one save file I might find the Legend the hardest, on another the Glacierfish, and sometimes the Scorpion Carp is absolutely awful. But the Octopus is consistently as bad or worse as any of those. EDIT: Okay, recently I caught an iridium Octopus since it put up almost no fight at all. Just goes to prove again that ALL the tough fish vary a lot in difficulty.

I never found eels to be hard to catch cause they just. Never moved LMAO so i was surprised when it was put so high on the list

Had a legend once go up to top of bar and back to bottom 4 times in first 4 seconds of a cast.

As someone who got fishing level 10 before Spring (year 1) even ended, i caught all of the hard fish on the first try but it was the octopus that gave me the hardest time, so i'd vouch for it being the most difficult
I struggled with the legend
(I was dumb and useing the fibreglass rod got it 1st try with the trap bobber)
Sturgeon is hard because it takes forever to get on the line what with all the other fish in the lake in summer, it’s always the last thing I need for that bundle, and in Summer year 1 I’m not high enough to use tackle yet

Dang, lucky! I needed that special lure that makes rare fish bite more often in order to get a *chance* to catch one lol. Took me multiple tries to catch

Me too, but on year 1 like, fall, not even max fishing level, i never knew it was rare until i tried fishing another one and i genuinely thought i hallucinated catching it the first time

I recently caught my first lava eel. It wasn't the first one I hooked, the first one I hooked was an accident. I didn't know anything could be caught in the lava pond in the mines cause I'd always get trash. So I was fishing for trash (for free refined quartz bc I'm fairly early game) and suddenly I get that exclamation mark and then absolutely destroyed because the lava eel chose violence.
I've always had more trouble with the glacierfish than any of the others, funnily enough. Something about its pattern makes it harder than even the legend.
I found that too. I found the glacierfish to be extremely tough, whereas I caught the legend first try
Yeah same. I was able to catch the legend fish and lava eel easily once I was able to hook it but, but I was never able to catch the glacier.

Same, my last game I hooked it a good 5 or 6 times before I caught it. And then I forgot to put it in my chest before processing the rest of my catches into sashimi. I assume we all know what happened next
The Legend was the hardest fish for me. If you do everything right, you still only have an 11% chance of hooking it. I had to restart days because I didn’t even hook the damn thing. It is just so annoying, and in itself it’s a hard fish to catch. I couldn’t do it even with trap bobbers. Meanwhile, I caught the Octopus and the Scorpion carp on my second tries for both of them, and the Lava Eel became significantly easier with trap bobbers.
This seems intended but it's an interesting thing that I encountered. Because you're basically given your first fish that you hook because it disables the decay of the fishing meter. I didn't touch a fishing pole until I hit the lava lake in the mines and got an early Lava Eel for my fish pond!
Sturgeon on my first playthrough was the most frustrating thing in the world to catch ... it scarred me for a very long time

I always find lincods difficult than sturgeons. I dunno maybe I just familiarized the pattern of sturgeons.

Okay I can't be the only one whos had a chill experience with the cucumbers. Like normal ones are super easy for me, i've never had trouble with them and I remember being at lower levels and accidentaly catching super cucumbers
In my original playthrough I had the hardest time catching the octopus and then in my second playthrough I caught one in the night market submarine thinking it was just a hard blobfish
This. I got 3 octopuses first time I did the deep sea (and also didn't realize I could pass out in the sub which I totally did because I was catching so many fish)
The DAMN LEGEND is the only thing that troubles me. But when I caught it, you bet my DAMN GAME CRASHES AND I LOSE THE FISH

i caught the lava eel while trying to get master angler achievement and i hooked and caught it on my first try, then i caught the octopus in the night market thinking it was a hard blobfish 💔 only fish ive really had difficulty with was the glacierfish i hate it with my entire soul
the one thing i will say about catching the lava eel is this: getting them in your fish pond is lucrative as HECK. aged lava eel roe (after putting them in preserve jars), magma geodes, gold!
The eel isn't that hard to catch, I usually catch some on day 3 of year 1. It's a bit tricky with low-level fishing (usually I'm level 3 by then) but much easier than a catfish. As for the slimejack, if you start fishing right close to the entrance and don't rouse up any of the bugs, they rarely will attack you while you're fishing. Also, I LOVE the lava eel and catch one as soon as I can to put in a fish pond to get aged roe and spicy eel. It's fun to put in the aquarium too.

I know everyone goes for the catfish day 3 of spring, but I go for the eel... everytime I go for it on that day, I always get the eel! Fuck the catfish, sort that out later 😤

Nuh for me I would say Ice pip, The Bite Rate is so Extremely Low I have spent 2 whole days waiting for it sometimes and then every single time I hook one I can never get my finger on it, the trips to level 60 is usually ends up with 20 White and Green Algae, I've caught a couple of red eels and I tell you they got nothing on the Pip

Yeah, bc at least with the lava eel it's either trash or the lava eel, with the ice pip, it'll hook, I get excited, and then I realize the pattern is for the ghostfish and the disappointment is the worst part for some reason.

I think my "impossible" tier is Scorpion Carp, Glacierfish, Lava Eel in that order. [Whenever I do Qi's order board for re-catching legendary fish, glacierfish is the one I have difficulty with.]

This is why Krobus’ shop is great. Most Wednesdays I will go down there and see what he has. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure that they always cost 200g. I have found many useful fish there like the Tiger trout that I didn’t have to wait until fall for and the Sturgeon which, unfortunately, I had already caught, put in a fish pond, and donated.
Apart from the mines you can also catch a lava eel at the top of the volcano

No because when I first caught a dorado, it was kinda late into the game and also it was a bit difficult, so I thought it was a nice rare fish and put it into a fish tank
I caught an iridium lava eel perfect first time trying to catch it, tbh it's so easy I caught a few gold after that. I find the octopus much harder lol idk just my opinion tho
THANK YOU for the scorpion carp placement it was the only "hard" fish that i caught without a trap bobber and the battle with it was so hard it made my eyes hurt like hell this clump of pixels has caused my physical pain help
The slime jack can actually be made easier to catch if you stay at the entrance of the bug zone which then means in a 5 hour slimejack sesh you’ll only get 2 flying bugs coming towards you.Also don’t argue but lava eel is annoying tier.
i accidentally caught the crimson fish in my first real play through, and then accidentally sold it when i wanted to put it into a tank
I beg to differ with the anchovy being the easiest, I think that it should go to the carp because it barely moves and if it does, it never goes up too high and immediately sinks.
I feel that the eel (see what I did there) is easier than the catfish to actually reel in (okay I’ll stop now), and as long as you make time to go fishing in the evening of spring when it rains you’re pretty much guaranteed to get at least a few.
The Volcano Pool is hands down the BEST spot for Lava Eel Farming. With my experience, you get more bites and less trash. Also, in combination with max fishing skill, master enchantment on an iridium rod, magic bait, and seafoam pudding, you can end a whole day with more than 10 Lava Eels.
The scorpion carp is my least favorite fish to catch
one save i spent an entire day trying to catch a lava eel (level 10 fishing) and didn't even hook one until 11:30 pm, but i caught it on the first try. another save it took me like 40 in game minutes to hook a lava eel and caught it on the first try (also level 10 fishing, same rod and everything)
Just yesterday, my friend decided to try and get a lava eel, and got 3 on his first time. He then proceeded to catch 5 in a day, WITHOUT buffs, just fishing 10.

Ok, I’ll preface this by saying I don’t even know half the things in this game. I don’t keep up with really anything related to it.
So, after watching the video and not knowing the lava eel even existed, I went to the one place i remember lava being: level 100 in the mines. So I went fishing. And on the second bite, I got a lava eel. It really wasn’t that bad cause it was just the usual jitter style fish and so the usual strategy I employed was well, employed. I am at level 10 for fishing so that contributed a bit so I read, but not by too much. Also no tackle or buffs were used.
The two fish that made me cry was the lava eel and the octopus
I like fishing because it can be as peaceful or intense as you want, and its always a mystery what you will get (what fish will hook and on what quality, will there be a chest, and what would be in it).
I feel like on the farm you need to have a purpose. Either making your farm nice, profitable or just feel real.
With fishing you just chill, set your own target for the day and you can freely let harder fish escape if you want to.
And besides, who doesnt love to hear the sound of the beach and ocean

The Lava Eel is one of the Easier hard fish because it is available YEAR round. The Octopus is much harder because the pattern is very fast and it is only available in the summer and it has a limited time frame of 6AM to 1PM which since it is in summer the most profitable season you shouldn’t be fishing you should be doing more profitable things than trying to catch an Octopus.
They both have their pros and cons. Lava eel seems to have a lower vote rate and higher possibility of trash. I'll try for an entire day and only get trash lol but I get 3+ octopus bites a day when I fish in the ocean but it could just be luck. They are pretty evenly matched imo
I finally gave in to get Stardew on my switch and the bream was the very first one I caught lol this list is accurate so far

The first time I ever even saw a Dorado was when the travelling merchant was selling one this year
Dorado is, by far, the fish that consumed the most of my time. I spent multiple days (well the part they are there) fishing before finally hooking one.
Pretty easy to catch once it was hooked, but getting a shot at it was so tedious.

i think i caught 2 Eels on Spring 3 or something and was surprised when my friend told me later that the Eels are one of the hardest Spring catches (in her opinion at least). the Catfish gave me hell though. took several in-game days to finally catch it
It might depend on the file code for the Crimsonfish? I find I land it repeatedly if I’m fishing where I’m supposed to.
As for the Lava Eel, if I’m having trouble with it, I’ll wait until I can get Linus’s trash quest from the community board. Then I can complete that quest for trash while fishing for the eel. Lol

i got lucky and got the lava eel on my second try. i was REALLY close the first time but i accidentally hit the b button while mashing and it cancelled :/ i was SO MAD but fortunately it didn't take too long to fish up another. so i was surprised to find out people consider the lava eel difficult.
Funny story about the slimejack - I was playing with my friend the other day on our co-op game file and we had just unlocked the mutant bug lair, so I wanted to catch a slimejack just for completion purposes. I was in there like a whole in-game hour before him (probably more than that, even), and sat there trying to catch the slimejack for all that time... and this guy just WALTZES IN, and after getting the dark talisman for the quest, casts his line in the water and gets a slimejack IMMEDIATELY.
it was funny but also a slap to the face at the same time lmaooo
the dorado is one i always forget about usually one of the last fish i catch but the shrimp is annoyingly elusive it’s been the last to “catch” on two files. :/

Octopus by far. I actually kind of broke the game when the submersible or whatever it is came out where you could get deep living fish and It gave me the stardrop and the achievement for fishing all fish despite not catching any Octopi yet. I think I probably caught it around the 125 hour mark in playing my character or something.
I got an eel first try in a new play through once-
I also got the woodskip by entering the secret woods with a chair, almost got stuck there until 2 am but I managed lol
I had caught both octopus and lava eel extremely easily but what got me was the scorpion carp, after i caught that bad boy he instantly went on display.
Literally stumbled onto this after constantly failing to catch a bloody catfish, pleased to see its not just me. As a spring bundle fish it shouldn't be so obnoxiously hard to catch at low fishing.

I remember watching this video early in my stardew runs. Probably I caught angler and glacier, but not the others. Anyway, now that I’m back and more experienced, I’ll say that the lava eel, wasn’t that bad once I got it on the line. Idk either that or I somehow got better at stardew fishing by not touching the game for a year.
To be fair to Seanie, I do remember getting a lot of trash my first time trying to get the lava eel
One farm I went all in on fishing and caught the Legend on a clutch 28th of Spring rain day with only a tier two rod and a trout soup (what got me to level ten) 😎

I 100% agree with lava eel, but with the introduction of Ginger Island you can catch it in the 10th floor of Volcano, it's a joke there. Still hard yes, but it's like a 50% difficulty and the mines are like a 5% lol.
I usually catch at least 2 eels on Spring 3 of year 1 right after I get the fishing rod but then I can't get a catfish like ever. weird

Here's a sentence that will most likely trigger you: I caught a Lava Eel on my fifth cast, first time on the hook, during a neutral luck day with no fishing buffs. I also had no idea what the thing was. It was only until I found out how annoying it was to catch that I started having issues. .,."
Hardest fish? Maybe the Woodskip, or the Lobster, that one is heavily armored after all...
I caught my lava eels on the 10th level of the volcano next to the forge. It’s a lot easier to catch there because there was no trash.
lol i didnt know the lava eel was hard, i got 2 bits of trash then the lava eel and ppulled it in right away, then i put it in a fish pond so didnt need to catch it again, had no idea oops
I always over prepare for fishing. once I made qi seasoning seafoam pudding and brought 3 different bobbers and all the bait I had and then proceeded to get it 3rd hook :/ same for void salmon. lava eels are so easy as a medium experience player.
I have caught so many lava eels when I was grinding trash for cloth (soggy newspaper) yet I have never been able to reel in an octopus, so I'll just kindly disagree with your opinion
the sea cucumber, night festival fish and community centre fish have all been exceptionally easy to get they kinda just laid at the bottom of the bar except the sturgeon. i hate that damn fish so much. that was one of the hardest fish I've ever caught. i got more mad at that fish than i have been in my entire life.

The Legendary was almost impossible for me, but Mr.Qi's legendary quest versions of the legendaries were really easy.

As someone who's caught every fish in the game on multiple save files, it really is a fight between Octopus and Legend. I give the edge to the Octopus simply because you have a lot less opportunity to catch it, only about 7 minutes to catch it, not including the time it takes to reach the beach. Legend is only in the rain, but it's all day, so you've got PLENTY of attempts to get it
Legend Fish are:
Angler/Ms Angler: Easy
Mutant Carp/Radioactive Carp: Annoying
Crimsonfish/Son of Crimsonfish: Annoying
Glacier Fish/Glacier Fish Jr.: Hard
Legend/Legend 2: Impossible
I think the Glacier Fish is the hardest to reel in in the game, but the Squid is the hardest to catch for me in the game. Every time I go out for Squid, I come back with like 20 Octopi and tears. I caught the Glacier Fish after a full day of fishing and two seafoam puddings, with the cork screw bobber, and it was still near impossible for me. (The Legend, in comparison, I caught in my first or second time hooking it).
It actually didn't take me that long to catch the lava eel I caught in one day and it was my time hooking it
For me the Scorpion Carp was the most difficult, struggled wayy to much with it
I dont know why, but no fish seems difficult for me. I have no luck getting good fish but i get them all first or second try.
I personally don't struggle with the octopus. Heck, I caught it on accident once looking for the crimson fish. But this moment hurt me(5:14-5:51). The glacier fish is litterally the hardest fish in the game. I caught the legen seconed try but it took me so long to catch Glacierfish. You also have to stand on ONE specific tile. you said the anglerfish having low tiles was annoying but you didn't even bring it up with glacierfish
Lava eel is the hardest just to catch, but octopus is harder considering all the other issues that come with catching it. Morning, beach, summer, low bite rate, and so many much more common fish. But it's really close
In my personal experience, the four hardest fish are the Crimsonfish, Glacierfish, Legend, and Scorpion Carp. Those are the only four fish where I need to have a fishing buff through fish tacos or seafoam pudding to catch them. Otherwise, I'm probably SOL. 😂
Lava eel and most hard lvl fish are better to wait on until you can get the recpe, ingredents, and qi seasoning for gold star seafoam pudding to attempt, it is leagues easier at that point. lvl 10 fishing also helps

Eel being in the same tier as Legend is already insane but Midnight Carp above Glacierfish is ridiculous
In my second save file I midmaxed a little bit so I didn't know some things, for example that fish can multiply in the fish pond. I heard from my friend that some fish makes the ponds water green or RED and I realy wanted to have a lava eal pond. And so I cought my 1st lava eal, and the 2nd, and the 3rd and I cought almost 6 lava eals when I realised that they reproduce
