The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

I have the tournament book. Tarrasch remarks upon 57...h5 only with:
"A mistake, upon which White wins a pawn and obtains a few winning chances."
In this edition (from Caissa Editions), the editor adds a few sample lines that lead to draws.
According to Tarrasch, it was Capablanca that offered the draw, even though Tarrasch made the final recorded move. He says:
"Broken off as a draw upon Black's suggestion. White now even stands somewhat better, for example, 59...Ke6 60.Re5+ Kd6 61.Rxg5 c3 62.Be5+ followed by Bxf4. But the player of the White side was already rather exhausted by the seven-hour struggle."

The Capablanca saga is so entertaining, you have gotten so good at telling the stories and Capablanca seems to be filled with great ones. great work!!
12:20-12:32 It was about time somebody took it upon themselves to talk about the rooks' preferences in life!
Every rook dreams of gobbling up doubled pawns, getting behind passed pawns, and mostly getting back rank checkmates!
i was w8ing 4 "or, perhaps TRIPPLE pawns" xD
@@azorthegreat2112 Oh, exactly, I was imagining being that rook and the idea of having that miraculous gift in front of me almost made me cry from the joy.

Your videos are like a drug. Good job once again.
I don't even play chess! I play such 1 game every three months.. but for some reason I watched every single game in this channel from the past year until now!
Thank you Antonio you are an excellent youtuber ! Keep it up
agadmator you have to know that this vids are keeping me alive.

5 years later how are you doing
"don't wanna go Spassky Fischer" 😂😂
I laughed so much at that

5:43 for someone who does not understand somehow
@@harshitrawat811 Thanks, but the reason I don't understand is not that, rather that I'm simply not yet familiar with the details of the S-F game. (No problem tho, of course, I may just go and watch it later.)
I really enjoy Capablanca saga and appreciate all the stories you put on the table. But what I especially appreciate is fact you never do forget to bring the respect to players, who loose to Capablanca´s brilliance and may seem quite weak due to his strong play. The joy of the game, respect to all players and subscribers is really one of most beautiful things, which makes your channel simply great. Keep it up!
I understood the spaskey fisher reference...wohoooo my brain is finally learning something
12:20 made me cry 😂😂😂😂😂
His subtle jokes are some I always look forward to. LOL
I'm watching capablanca saga & Botvinnik-Tal series every day, nothing could have entertained me more recently than your astonishing Channel, thank you so much;)
Capablanca shouldn’t have been Tarrasch talking him.
The Marvel references you're adding in your titles are simply hillarious. Keep up the good work 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
Watching Capablanca's games has greatly impacted how I play chess. Like Capablanca I play moves to get to an endgame and after watching his games and reading some endgame books I find I can offten win a lot of these end games I come across when I play chess online. Your Capablanca vedios have been helpful thankyou so much and keep up the good work.
"It's most likely a line Capablanca is not familiar with."
Crushes Marshall's secret weapon in one seating.
Love the game 1 of the 1972 world chess championship Fischer vs Spassky reference. Every time that happens or that is a possibility I think of that move.😂♟
I am excited for that certain someone's game!!!
Tarrasch can hang with Capablanca in these sticky tactical middle games--a worthy opponent!
Finally found the move for the first time :D (Rook to E4). Maybe not the hardest move to find, but progress is progress

Coin falls standing STRAIGHT on its border !
- " It's a DRAW, Mr Tarrash ! " (Capablanca)
Yes!
I was refreshing youtube constantly cos it was time for your upload :)
I love this channel and the Bobby Fischer and Capablanca series, I followed/follow them more than when I watch a TV series hehe.
Tarrasch has the German word for "Victory" in his first name. Intimidating!
Tarrasch: He who fears an isolated Queen's Pawn should give up Chess.

'Take that Dr. Tarrasch' - Agadmator
12:21 Lol. There is nothing a rook likes more than a doubled pawn. I started laughing.
''the move played blunders the game''
...
''the players agreed to a draw''
well if those are blunders my moves are atrocities.
"There is nothing a rook likes more than a doubled pawn. Perhaps, maybe a back rank mate, but other than that a doubled pawn is very nice."
Real players know that pieces have personalities!
Maybe a tripled pawn 😂
Many players starts with Italian game. This is chess classic.
Well done!
ABC Chess Analysis true
Casablanca games are always great especially against fellow greats like Tarrasch Great game great play from both players much thanks Agadmator
Really like capablanca style I hear of him but never really seen his games u til u started showing the saga it’s amazing
"Rook likes back rank mate more than doubled pawns than anything!!"
Now I can surely say that I'm very much proud subscriber of agadmator 🍻
Hello, Agadmator, and thank for bringing me back to the Capablanca saga.
You nine "thumbs-downers" (as of 10:18 p.m. PST), speak up and please explain why you dislike this video?
they were watching the video upside down
Agadmator's Quote of the Day: "A couple of seconds like I usually do."
A very pregnant quote which you can apply to almost anywhere.
Fabulous game! Tarrasch played brilliantly, specially considering the age difference.
Your technology showing variations then coming back to main game lines in a click is cool/ ok now that I saw older Capa on photos I can imagine that he well wrote his own book, surely with the help of someone for assembling memories.
I think people in the early 20th century were much better educated in writing. I see a lot of young people's spelling and grammar is atrocious these days. It is likely that he wrote the book himself although there were publishers in those days that would help with proof reading and structural advice. Perhaps you could research his book to see who the publisher was and who did the various language translations. Perhaps it has acknowledgements for those that assisted Capablanca with the book, if anyone.
I'm looking forward to the Agadmator saga. It would improve my knowledge of Chess. Vastly.
10:30 -- Interesting move, as a5 isn't even among the lines considered by the engine (Stockfish10), which prefers various different pawn or rook moves with around a -1 score (with f5 favoring Black most) prior to a5 (after which the game becomes a more drawish -.03.)
10:47 -- That being the case, if White replies Bxa5?, then yes, he has blundered (and with Rxf2 as the best response), but he was not ahead in the position before this point. After the alternative bxa5, Rc2 (the played move by Capablanca, Black is only -0.32.
11:31 -- Rb4 is a blunder (what was Tarrasch hoping for?), with Black being a full point ahead again after c5. Better would have been h5, Kg2, or Rd1, all of which keep the game drawish.
12:45 -- Rg3 is suboptimal, as it merely provokes g5 (which the engine has been recommending for some time anyway); better are h4, Re3, or Kf1.
13:16 -- This was the last moment Tarrasch had to get his king into the game with Kf1, or to get the f-pawn out of harm's way via f3. Instead, he unnecessarily moves his bishop and invites the rook check that drives him back into the corner and removing defense of the f-pawn. Kg6 follows, Kg3 (preventing g4), Rd1, Bc3...and the bishop is right back where it started.
13:50 -- The real purpose of Bd5 is to prevent the White king from escaping the corner via Kg3.
13:58 -- Capablanca should have pushed f5 right here. With Rc1, Be4, Rc2, he permits Tarrasch to respond with Ra3! (where White's rook is now safely on a dark square defending the a-pawn, salvaging a theoretical draw out of a deteriorating position).
16:33 -- As analyzed above, the game is already drawish at this point. Rd2 would have been better, but Black is only -0.7 (by depth 35) after doing so. It's possible that Capablanca knew a draw was the most likely outcome anyway (the engine foresees a pawnless rook+bishop vs rook endgame after Rd2), and therefore hastened to secure it rather than afford Tarrasch any opportunity for brilliancy. As frequently noted elsewhere, Capablanca was a "lazy" player.
Oh man the spassky fischer reference was too good ! ! Too bad that many viewers won't get it :(
nice game with strong player like Dr. Tarrasch thank you
capablanca was really good at chess... i must say this after watching every game you've showcased.
Love the videos, pretty good feeling predicting alot of capablancas moves... somehow still get stomped by 1500 players hahah
This guys played at such a high level at that time. The only difference between them and contemporary players is the knowledged accumulated the last 100 years.
#suggestion Can we get a current standings perhaps? Or at least the top 3, or 5? I think that would have added even more intrigue to the San Sebastian, and will with this. So it's a suggestion, as in for anything like this going forward in the future.
As a Cuban I do thank you for this Aga
15:04 After Re5 Black might play B:f3 and g2 also falls. I see no dangerous checks after Re6+ Kf7.
I think "h5" was not a blunder, it was just a "gentleman draw offer". He knew the position was draw and decided to just make things easier.
@Joe Blow No less plausible than any other speculation.
The idea that you have to put your rooks behind passed pawn is actually called Tarrasch’s Rule. Just saying =) #suggestion
Hello Agad..why don’t you do videos about keres, bronstein, botvinik, to keep your channel alive. These great games are what sent you far so keep doing them.
I keep immediately picking the good moves in all the videos when Agadmator pauses...this is very troubling as I thought I am getting too old to be a chess genius.
Good moves are much easier to find when you know there's one but congrats regardless
Tarrasch's beard though
Daaamn boi, it's thicc
At 6.52, I guessed the move to be g5? Seems pretty interesting it attacks the bishop in the same way the rook lift does only difference is you aren't pressuring whites pawn on the c file
Because you go arg.. Spasky Fischer you know ?.. İt was fun to hear that. İ mean i tought about any commentatior says that. İ would shit out of my pants. Love you man :)))
Love the Capablanca saga!
Yes, I know how it goes.
Enjoying the saga very much.
Excellent series! QUESTION: at 15:04 of the video, with black to move, WHY CAN'T BLACK TAKE THE F3 PAWN WITH HIS BISHOP? THE G2 PAWN IS PINNED TO THE KING! Did I miss something?
Great content...! Just my ocd talking.... but two opposite colored bishops is not an automatic draw by insufficient material...as there is a possible mate. Only same colored bishops result in impossibility of checkmate. Again... an insignificant detail.
This would not be a draw by insufficient material because with opposite colour bishops it is possible to setup a checkmate (for example black Kh8, Bg8, white Kh6 Bf6). Insufficient material means there is no way to give checkmate with any sequence of valid moves
isn't bishop check stronger than the rook check at the end, pick up the pawn, then the other and cover the queening square?
Didn’t really look like a draw but I’ll take Casablanca’s word for it
Casa Blanca means white house.

15:04 Re5 doesn't trade bishops, black can simply play Bxf3
Stockfish and LCz is playing amazing game right now
19:23 #capturescapturescapturescaptures I want that more you are losing the spirit of the channel by not saying this amazing combination please use this combination more :)
Hey agad, I've been a fan for about 1 and a half years and I love your channel. Keep it up. I'm only 12 years old and I have been trying to participate in as many tournaments as possible and trying to emulate Capablanca's game. I was wondering if you had any pointers to help me improve. Thankyou so much!!!

15:06 bxf3!
You'd go Spasky-Fischer... You know :) I do, because I watched your video of it.
You're an excellent chess commentatore!
@15:04 after white just played Re5, why not Bxf3 for black?
why does the black bishop not take pawn on f3? move at time 15.00?
Just after the 9:35 mark Why doesn't Capablanca just move the rook out of danger? R a2 or b2 or Rf6 or f4, basically anywhere but Rxg2 giving up the rook that you said he didn't want to trade? Given that I SUUUUCK at chess I could easily be missing something obvious... but if anyone could enlighten me I would be thankful. P
At 15:04 what about Bxf3 instead of Rxc3?
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Papablanca saga... I always hear that haha :D
Thanks for showing how the game will end after they agree for draw
Why we never see the Sizilian?
I involuntarily made a gulping sound at 12:38.
Mmmm. Tasty pawn.
That whole idea where he tried to play fancy X'D X'D
I spit coffee at "excellent refuter of plans...that don't work"
#suggestion Hi - is it possible to provide a link to a good video analysis of decisive World Championship games between Capa and Alek? Thx
With all these engine games, I was wondering, is the win rate of white still slightly above black in engine games? or is it just a human chess thing?
Did any one else read the title as Doctor Strange like the marvel movie? lol
Brayden Abbott I’m pretty sure he was referencing exactly that
master muchas gracias
Love it 😀
lol i was just about to comment on that going spassky Fischer my God.
15:04 after Re5 not Rxc3 but Bxf3 which wins a pawn at least.
At 9:40 of the video why wud u want to take with ur rook next to his king bfor u take his rook with ur pawn I'm trying to figure it out bt I can't lol what's the downside to that
HeLLo EvErYoNe !!!
Agad neglects that in some cases a rook might prefer a.... tripled pawn.
Why are we not seeing the videos for the world title? Was that video you did against Lasker, the draw, the only game they had for the title? I'm confused as to why you posted that video then picked back up the st Petersburg tournament.
The game against lasker he posted was not part of a world championship match, rather it was played as part of the St. Petersburg tournament
Seth Nelson that game was from the tournament itself, so not for the title
@@mogger69 thanks for the clarification
@@dwperry8890 thanks for the clarification
I think after Re5 bishops wouldnt be trade but rather Bxf3 seems deadly to me

Oh yeah
Fun Fact- As a child Capablanca was so chatty that his friends and family used to call him Capablablanca
Damn y'all fast

11:30 why did white move his rook on b4? If black pushed c5 he wouldve just taken the bishop
