To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

Amazing, informative coverage of the 1914 tournament of St. Petersburg.
Capablanca fun to see his games thanks.
"Interesting move by Lasker" love it. TY Mr.Agadmator
Thanks a lot for the info. You don’t know how many bar fights I’ve gotten into over the 1914 tournament in St. Petersburg.
Loving going back though this back catalogue of gems!
I had no idea that Capa was so toxic. Not being able to acknowledge and congratulate your opponent is a characteristic of lesser people. Lasker was 46 years old when this tournament took place and Capa should have the courage to accept his defeat and give him the credits.
Thank you for the Capablanca series!!!
Thank you for uploading again!!
Thank you Antonio for reading and explaining the paragraphs
21:50 Interesting move by Lasker
*lol*
Proof that Lasker cheated. He snuck a move into Capablanca vs Alekhine.
So what is the idea here?
I'm enjoying this series while on quarantine, I can't express how grateful I am agad
I wish every day that I could be at a bar when my friends ask me "How come Akiba Rubinstein had 5 points and Lasker had 13 and a half? -I mean, Lasker wasn't SO much better than Rubinstein..."
Not your typical bar conversation :)
aww man when you showed the results I was so happy as I looked at the first part panel 14:40
I fuckin love this guys best chess personality for sure
A remarkable game by Capablanca!
Jose the 'goat' capablanca😊
So sad the tournament won't be something like 10+0 or at least 5+0. I can see myself facing the same problem as Ivanchuk, I will always be in time trouble.
Yeah that's my issue too. 5 is pushing it, but I understand why he wants shorter time controls.
Finally. The correct pronounciation of Alekhine. "Al-e-Yekkin"
The hero’s journey requires a blunder by the hero to teach them a lesson that is required to become stronger & eventually prevail in the end.
A gold ruble had about half the content of gold of a gold dollar in 1912. We can estimate that the champion made about $600 gold dollars. Quite a significant amount; about the price of a luxury car.
In 1914 1 USD = 1.94 RUB. So the first prize was around 600 USD. Which adjusted to inflation would be 15 600 USD today. Pretty neat prize.
Hello Agadmator!
Show us some more Alekhine games!
#suggestion dear agad, kindly let us know total head to head score tally capablanca vs laskar (lifetime). Not available in Google I guess.
Love from India.
After this saga can we have nice Tal game
But I'm actually waiting for a game with fried lever attack. Although it's rarely played in top tier level but the attack is so exciting
does anyone remember the game, played between 2 relatively unknown chess players. The game was kinda like an Immortal, and the white player won. In the game, he "accidentally" touched a pawn that couldn't advance, so his opponent made him play with a piece that had a legal move, turns out this is the move he wanted to play and the white player just touched the pawn to trick the opponent. Agadmator made a video on the game but I can't find the video. Can someone please tell me the title of that video so I can watch it again, thanks in advance.
I believe you are talking about the game The Deepest Move Ever played, where white moved the King to F1.
I really enjoy your videos man, keep up the great work. Also, set up a venmo it's a lot easier to donate that way for me and I'm sure others as well!
Okay here is the answer you are looking for i hope... it was not easy to figure out.
But first you need to find what the value of the Rubles is to the value of gold in 1914.
1913 Russian Ruble was "One new ruble was equal to 0.7774234 grams of pure gold
"A gram of gold in 1914 was worth 20.67 USD.
More math $20.67 divide by 0.7774235 = 16.06 of gold. // 16.06 times 800 =
Capablanca 800 rubles would be worth to him $12,848 USD dollars in 1914.
In today's money
0.7774235 ounces of gold today is $32.21 USD
800 times 32.21 = $25,576.00 USD in today's money.
I've heard this term several times from Agadmator. What exactly is a "fast pawn"?
1200 Rubles in 1914 was approximately 2400 USD in 1914. Meaning if we convert USD from 1914 to USD in 2019 it would be around $60,000
Best saga wish it will last forever
Capablanca speaks so humbly about himself...
The name "St. Peterburg" is quite puzzling.
$.50 was worth 1 rouble in 1914, adjusted for inflation would be around $125.00 today. So that would be $75,000 for the winner.
5:49 what if knight captures e6 pawn? if fxe6 than qxe6+ and the queen will pick up the bishop on a6. Did I miss something?
How old is “Aljekin” AA in the above picture?
Thanks.
I think the Website you mentioned calculates with 1.7% inflation a year
My thought process was "I dont think g6 works, i think you have to go back to Kg8" LMAO
It’s 6:10 AM here, and I would say this is a great morning
Price Conversion Answer: Dollar inflation $100 in 1914 → $2,511.07 in 2019, in the early 1900's, 30 roubles = $318.73..... so 1st price 1200 roubles in 1914 was around USD 12,749.2 and calculating the inflation, in 2019 it ill be USD 320,336.33, if I messed up the maths, please let me know.
I only found conversion rates from 1rouble to ~ $.50USD. Very hard to tell because the rouble changed in value quickly around that time frame.
I could not find one book by or about Zigbert Tarrash on Amazon! Perhaps you could translate and publish the excellent book on the 1914 tournament in your merchandise! How hard is it to publish a public domain book? I for one would eagerly buy and read that book, and it is a crime that it is unavailable!
why not knight to e6 instead of pawn to h3 at 5:53
"in his(Morphy) time , theoretical knowledge of the opening did not exist" ; Wow, Morphy and Capablanca really are alike.
Right and alpha zero shows that style of play is winning
🔥🔥
yes, show lasker vs marshall!
Could you please do their 1927 World Championship matches? Magnus Carlsen has himself stated that was the point Chess was played at a high level.
I did it online and it says that 1200 rubles of 1914 is something like 35000 USD today.
I don't know if accurate tho.
Yes indeed
Which book from capablanca do you mean at the end?
As a casual chess player I would chose 10 + 0 because I feel a lot of pressure on low time formats and can't even finish a game. :(
Am I reading the table wrong, or did Lasker actually lose against Bernstein and not against Janowski?
I vote 2'+1
Thanks for everything!

at 5:47, why not knight takes e6?
i think you should say " it will be improbable" it is definitely "possible" to blunder :P
1200 ruble should be slightly over 15,000 dollars nowadays but thats a rough calculation
Shaking with anxiety 😫
If Capablanca is rated in today's ELO rating what will be his rating?
Greetings Comrades

Alekhine looks like a guy who would have made a great Bond villain. His picture on Wikipedia? Forget about it!
True that, but I can also see him fighting Harrison Ford in the vicinity of an idling airplane.
His character would even match, he was an utter douchebag, lying douchebag to that.
Only Bobby Fischer could best him on chess asshole scale.
16:10 -- In 1914, the value of the ruble was approximately 50c US, which was then on the gold standard at $20/1ozAu. A ruble was therefore 1/40th oz Au. The first place of 1200Ru(1914) is thus equal to $39,000 March 4, 2019 dollars. As second-place finisher, Capablanca took home $26,000.
$0.514 actually. See my comment above. :) Also this nice table at www.cyberussr.com/hcunn/gold-std.html#russia
I had result spoiled by this comment
I get a very different result. The link below claims one ruble was worth 0.7774 grams of gold, which means it was worth 0.0486 ounces. RUB1,200 x 0.0486 = 58.3 Oz of gold, which is worth USD75,800 today.

@@michaelvanzyl9418 Serves you right for reading comments before watching the video.
Value in gold vs value in dollar. Value of 1200ru to year 1914USD times inflation to 1019 is ~$15,500.

I enjoyed the reading of the letter. You are welcome to please share extra readings from your extensive knowledge. I watched all the way to the end.
Paul DeCamp You are an excellent subscriber.
@agadmator 1 ruble in 1914 was around 777 rubles in todays equivalent, so 1200* 777 = 932,400 rubles today and that is around 15000 USD. Again, this is an estimate, but we can already see that chess was important with such high value prizes.
Thank you
Lasker said of Paul Morphy:
"Paul Morphy was the greatest chess player that ever lived. Every student of the game, who has delved into the stories of the past, realizes that no one ever was so far superior to the players of his time, or ever defeated his opponents with such ease, and no one ever offered knight odds to the men who considered themselves his equal."
Comparing players of different eras is pointless, because chess theory evolves. The only meaningful comparison is how dominant a player was during their own era. On that basis, it's not even close, Morphy wins, hands down.
Casablanca sounds like a bad gentleman,he couldn't accept that he lose and congratulate opponent, but rather he choose to excuse himself by bad health and discredit Lasker's skill. He is a great chess player, but not a great sportsman(it reminds me a bit of Fisher)..
Capablanca was mistreated by Marshall slightly (with the little fiasco with the USA ch'ship), a lot by Lasker (who avoided a WC match against Capa like it was the cholera) and Alekhine (who ran away with the title to deepest and most obscure cave he could find never to respond to a tweet or a cable again). At the moment of the letter in the video Lasker had already been avoiding Capa for a good couple of years... All in all, he was very well behaved and quite balanced, I'd say...
Also.. in the return math between tal and botvenik tal was quite badly sick but still played the hole mach.... And lost it
He sounded like a heavyweight boxer explaining he lost the fight because of illness.
@@angelborregocubero2241 all i heard was excuses
@@angelborregocubero2241 Yes,some of this is true(even though I think it's a bit exaggerating), but nevertheless in their match on this tournament, Lasker clearly outplayed Capa,he played very good chess, and Capa should congratulate him as a gentleman and sportsman..
I was cheering for Capablanca so much :( Antonio, you are better then any TV show on any TV station at the moment :) Thank you so much for this hard and great work!
My friends and family constantly ask me about the 1914 chess tournament. I can finally answer
That comment from Capablanca in the book ... Talking of a sore loser. "Its was luck, it was luck, i was better ..." Ya, because chess is a game of chances, right?

I found g6, not because im amazing or anything (which I am, but in this case it's not how I found it) but simply because of the thumbnail... I excel in excellence
I really don't like Capablanca's attitude about placing 2nd. He makes too much of himself in there first two games, a better position means nothing if you don't win. The champion won and also beat Capablanca . He should of just congratulated the champions win. Instead of making excuses and making too little of the champions win and acknowledged his loss.
