Hey Paddy, as a Swiss, you made the right decision. You tried and understood the trail was close for a reason. Every year there are some tourists dying because they didn't respect the Alps/elements. It was a tad too early for this hike, you would have needed the right equipment and a guide most likely. You were smart to turn around and even smarter to take it as a learning curve and still enjoying the place. Highly impressed.

I've been to Switzerland several times, the last time was in 2019, in Bönigen. I would dearly love to go back. I was born in Glasgow and lived in a tenement in the east end. Switzerland was a heavenly revelation. My heart will always be in Switzerland where I would love to spend the rest of my life

That was a very wise decision. In 2022, more than 3,600 people got into an emergency situation in the Swiss Alps and had to be rescued.109 people suffered fatal accidents.

I wish I could still make hikes like you do. I'm only 40 and my mind still thinks I can. But a few years ago during a little hike in South Limburg (NL) I tripped over a hole covered by leaves and got torn ligaments both inside and outside of my left foot. I managed to really firmly tie my shoelaces and walk back to my car for 6 km. When I got home (sick with pain by that time) I took of my shoe and saw my foot swelling up to twice its normal size and turn purple. That day marked the end of my hiking days. It never fully healed and 3 to 5 km is about max I can do before the pain becomes to much to carry on. I do miss it. But now I try to find smaller walks to enjoy.

Thank you Paddy Doyle, love your wonderful adventure & your honest thoughts about any uncomfortable events - but you know for sure very well, such is travelling with all what can go fine or wrong but mostly it is in the middle of both - the Alps are by far not an easy going as many peoples are thinking it is😎💕Happy you visited Switzerland✌See you on your next journey .....👍🙏

Ah yes. Snow in the mountains is definitely nothing to mess around with. I tried hiking Rainier trails on the snow and to my disappointment I had to turn around. It was smart to turn around... especially being by yourself.

Very wise decision mate. I've done a ton of hikes in the Swiss Alps and you need your head on a swivel at all times unless it's a perfect summers day all day with no snow. I've never seen weather change so quick in my life as it does up there. One minute it seems fine and the next you can't see your hand in front of your face. Always need to play it very cautious. Still, as you say it was a mini adventure in itself.

Paddy, glad you flew the drone to scout the trail. As someone who was born in Switzerland, if the Swiss mountain patrol they say the pass is closed , and someone needs to be rescued from said closed pass, they will also be fined and billed for ignoring the posted warning which is your responsibility to check before you go. That's how they roll in Switzerland. You can be fined for getting a flat on the highway! Glad you are having fun. Beautiful!

Bloody hell Paddy, that was a crazy watch. Had me on the edge of my seat. Youre the same age as my son and I was thinking about what I'd say to him if he had gone out into the mountains so unprepared!! Im from NZ and ill equipped people often die up in the montains. Besides all the things like physical injury and avalanches, the weather can change and quickly chill down to freezing and you can lose all visibilty. So glad you decided to turn back.
I know what you mean about the fun we can have in misadventures but mounatins are like the oceans, they both need to be seriously respected. But I do so love your attitude Paddy!!

I still know many people that hike (and climb) still in their seventies and far harder than you are doing, so don't worry keep hiking and they will be talking about a great vlogger still hiking well into his seventies... you got plenty of time to hike everywhere in the world if you want to.

Stay safe. I'm a hiker as well.Alps, Himalayas, Pyrenees Good hiking shoes or boots are essential in the mountains. Not runners. Saves a lot of hardships and Makes all the difference. Especially when alone. You made the right decision to turn back. This reminded me of the jungle in Koh Phangan when I went into the jungle alone ( I notified the ranger before) and I lost the trail going forward. I decided to turn back and luckily I found the trail back to the hut and my bike. I could have been lost in the jungle ( 😬🙄)

It’s just a giant tourist attraction and it’s also extremely dangerous! 2) people who tell you to plan and research are missing the point! 3) I love the overall chill vibe of how you travel. 4) I love the content but I also love your incredible personality and your animated facial expressions. Too adorbs! 5) I know you were sooo bummed to have to turn around but it was the right decision especially being ALONE. I’ve been caught in the mountains with hail in summer and could have froze. Man, Paddy, at first, I expected to see Julie Andrews burst into the frame singing The Sound of Music. I think the hiking endorsements are going to come screaming in. If I subscribed to any hiking magazines I'd see you holding a backpack and "Endorsed by Paddy Doyle!"
But then you flipped the script and it was the prelude to a horror movie. I admit to some anxiety for you, no one around, no clear trail, storm coming. It reminded me of hiking alone in a national park in Ecuador and getting lost as it was getting dark. I found my way back but it was real terror for a while. Glad you have a drone!

As an avid viewer of your Swiss Alps hiking videos, I feel compelled to share some concerns. Your safety is paramount, and I've noticed some physical and mental unpreparedness.
Your content is filled with adventure and passion, yet it's important to address unhealthy habits. I strongly advise that you consider completely eliminating alcohol and junk food from your life. Maintaining a balanced diet is vital for energy and performance. Additionally, I encourage regular exercise and training. Good physical condition improves your experience and prepares you for the demanding trails of the Swiss Alps.
Your videos inspire many to appreciate nature. It's crucial to set a positive example. With these changes, you can promote a safer hiking culture for both yourself and your audience.
I genuinely respect the effort you put into your videos and want to see you thrive. But some recent choices may not serve as the best example for others. My intention here is to offer constructive advice. With these modifications, your captivating content can continue while promoting safety, responsibility and a healthy lifestyle.

Good decision to turn around. As a Swiss with a lot of hiking experience I can tell you that there is normally a good reason that a trail is closed. Snow on mountain trails in spring or early summer can get you into really dangerous situations. Like slipping in steep terrain or avalances because of the melting snow. I would recommend using a Swiss hiking app where you can see which trails are closed.

I've experienced this once - not far from the Jungfrau region actually. You're in an epic landscape that should be almost silent, except birds and maybe a trickling stream. And it is silent. Until... you hear a rumble you can't quite pinpoint. Your first thought is "Helicopter?". But that doesn't make sense, you would have heard that approaching gradually. But thist started out of nowhere. And it keeps rumbling. You feel it in your gut more than you hear it. And it is a very eerie feeling. Very visceral. And you suddenly feel very, very small. Your fight or flight response *doesn't* kick in, because, where to? And then the grumbling subsides, and you're left with the feeling that you're just a guest here. Not unwelcome. But nature has noticed you, and just said hello.
At least that's what it felt like for me ;-)

    Let me tell you something...
You do such an amazing job, I enjoy your journeys so much. Is there anything I can do to help you grow your channel even more?
What if I make comments in every one of your videos? Or better interact with your viewers? I'll think of something.
Thanks for making me laugh and explore the world along with you!
My husband and I are heading to Southeast Asia in December for almost 3 months. We watched many , many of your videos.
    Muito obrigada!!!

Wow that avalanche was crazy!!! You did the right thing to go back. It was just too dangerous! Another thing: Can we just appreciate for a second the extra meters that you are doing for us?!?! Every time when you are putting the camera somewhere, walking in front to get a good shot and then walking back to pick up the camera. I think that must be already kilometers on that channel 🙂

About the weather in Switzerland: nobody know but when I use to live back home we always said the weather “is the opposite of what the weather frog tell. “. That worked.. if you like chocolate please try “Ragusa”

do you carry out any planning at all? How did you not know the pass was shut? You should stick to your motorbike rides Paddy. Your not cut out for solo travel in the mountains. And you wanted to go to the Himalayas solo? oh dear.........

I can see a reference to peanut butter and chocolate, & can see where this is going.....but I think this is my concern with going somewhere like this.... as a bit of a gymrat. Like yeah I could take the time away from the gym, but hitting any kind of even vaguely acceptable macros seems like a real challenge. Hopefully some of these hotels/hostels offer some boiled eggs for breakfast, because even hitting 100g of protons a day seems difficult without spending silly money.

No, Paddy…you will be devastated when you compromise your health and life by taking unnecessary risks. You are a newbie to this adventure of the unknown. Can never be too cautious, only one life you have spend it wisely.
Good idea flying your drone to see what’s ahead. Your drone is your safety advisor.
Your wise soliloquy in the end speaks well of you.
Sprained ankle is one thing…a fracture means your trip end.
Snow avalanches are most likely to occur after a fresh snowfall adds a new layer to a snowpack. If new snow piles up during a storm, the snowpack may become overloaded, setting off a slide. Earthquakes can set off avalanches, but much smaller vibrations can trigger them as well.
Switzerland is regularly affected by floods and debris flows, landslides, fall processes (rockfall and rock avalanches), avalanches and storms. Forest fire, drought, heat waves and cold waves can also occur.
    How does Switzerland prevent avalanches?
Defensive structures, snow sheds, dams and forestry, closures and explosions as well as spatial planning measures protect settlements and transportation routes from avalanches. We provide expert opinions and advice on a whole variety of such protective measures.
